SOE "Astroturfing"

SOE's track record in regards to development, publishes, and support has never been good but has been dealt an even larger blow recently. In a recent Star Wars: Galaxies debacle it was revealed that upcoming fixes to the game that had been promised in 2003 would be delayed by Jump To Lightspeed's development.
Considering this game is not even in beta yet no positive five-star reviews should be made. Anyone who has played a SOE product knows the likelihood that this one will be full of serious problems at release due to server issues and the mounmental task of integrating a peculiar flight simulator into an already collapsing MMORPG engine.
Positive reviews at this point are very likely to be SOE employees performing what is known in reviewer circles as "astroturfing". This is where employees pose as legitimate reviewers and flood a forum with positive reviews or remarks for a product to dissuade any negative perceptions.
Contrary to the glossy statements of some reviewers, over 30,000 negative posts were made within days on the SWG forums in regards to latest developments. This is hardly a minority. For further evidence of the failure of this SOE liscense, one need only read the words of it's creator, Raph Koster, in his posts at f13.net.

I have to say that when SWG first came out, it was a total blast. I had a tremendous ammount of fun for about a month or two, which is about the same time as all those little quirks that are still bugged a year later, started getting on my nerves.
The biggest problem with SWG is that there's hardly anything starwarsy about it. Yeah sure you can go out and see Luke and Vader and all that stuff, but that's about it. There is no real galactic civil war going on in this game.
I want to state that I have never written a review on anything before in my life, but SWG just sucks so royally that it's impossible not to.
If you're gonna try this game then go get the 14 day free trial before buying. Oh and play out the entire 14 days before purchasing. Alot of people think it's fantastic for about a week, buy a subscription and two days later they've quit the game. So save your money until you're absolutely sure you want to play this game.
For those out there who are saying that this is the biggest massive multiplayer game out there I have but one thing to say, quit smoking crack and try another game. There's tons of other games out there some of which are five times bigger than SWG and alot less buggy, laggy, un-immersive and boring.
SWG still doesn't work JTL won't work either

SWG Combat is 100% broken and unbalanced. People go on more solo missions than anything by abusing the broken food and doctors buffs. So what happens is people Get together in a group so that they get tougher missions, then just split off and do the missions alone!
Combat is broken broken broken!
And don't even get me started on PVP! If you don't have 90% Comp Armour, 2x Valarian Brandy, and 3000+ HAM doctor buffs you WILL DIE. Also you can't just Master a Profession you choose. You have to stack your templates by picking the most powerful skills from all the professions.
Otherwise you will be 100% useless in PVP. And it's been this way the whole time!!
SOE Has been promising us to fix Combat/PVP since december and they haven't! Now they are releasing JTL before they fix the current game!
"This isn't related to JTL!" I'm sureyou are saying, but it's the TRACK RECORD of the company you are purchasing this game from. If this track record doesn't spell it out for you let me do it.
You will buy JTL, it will be horribly buggy and unbalanced. Once SOE manages to get JTL to not constantly crash and/or gets it to function properly they will move on to their next money making adventure leaving you with a horribly unbalanced game where probably ONE ship owns all the others or some dreadful part combination. And you have to ask yourself, will that one ship be neutral, rebel, or imperial. Then just pray it's one of the ships on YOUR side.
Not worth the time

I am a subscriber to SWG: An Empire Divided and I am extremely P?d off. This game, in its current, broken incarnation amounts to a chat room with pretty graphics. Most things in-game do not work and those that do don?t work very well. The player base has been lied to, led on, and totally ignored for over a year now with the final blow for many (the AGAIN delayed, over a year this time, combat balance) coming a few days ago. SOE and LucasArts should be ashamed, but as it is apparent they have sold their souls for the almighty dollar, I?m sure they are laughing all the way to the bank.
Now comes the ultimate slap to the face. We are being told that the combat balance is being postponed indefinitely while all efforts are being put to getting the JTL (the space-based, $35 add-on to SWG) expansion live. Why would you not fix the current problems first? Money, plain and simple. They are using our $15 dollar subscription fee(that I and many others believed was for being payed so that the product, SWG, was as good as it could be) to fund the production of JTL in a hope to lure even more subscribers. Well, I really think they have underestimated their customers with this move. Within an hour of posting the combat balance delay a 65 page, oppressively negative thread was created on the SWG forum which was subsequently locked. MANY players threatened to/have cancelled their accounts and if only half of them are true to their word upwards of a hundred are casualties of the shortsighted, greed fueled vision of this game.
The powers that be at SOE and LucasArts have continually trashed the Star Wars name and all that hold it dear. They have lost many customers for life and tarnished what could have been a happy marriage. Instead of taking the ball and running with a great concept they fumbled it and, like a short-bus riding, hockey helmet-wearing sped, kicked it further down the street with every lame attempt at picking it up only to have it inevitably fall into the gutter. Thank you SOE. Thank you LucasArts. I can only hope, that in some karma-induced tragedy, the massive piles of money made off the foolishly faithful tumble and crush you under their weight. Then, and only then will I be able to say in my best Gungan imitation 'Meesa sooo happy!'
Yours truly,
A worn out, fed up SWG fan

Do not buy this expansion pack, do not support this company who has continually lied to their users for MONTHS upon MONTHS.
Do read this:

See the reaction of how a community reacts to hear that the ONE thing they have been hoping for is now DELAYED to make SOE richer and to keep stringing along the faithful.
My account has been cancelled and will remain cancelled forever.

The core game is buggy and imbalanced. The combat balance was to fix all these imbalances, because for MONTHS now the answer to most of our combat related issues (the core system to the majority of the players because the majority of the players are combat oriented) has been met with "wait for the combat balance".
That's why we the players are so upset. The combat balance is being pushed until after JTLS (Jump To Lightspeed).
The biggest problem with the game is things break in the game all the time and they stay broken for months on end because the developers take a LONG time to fix things. The game starts out fun but the fun is sapped out by the bugs and imbalances that exist everywhere. It's easy to get frustruated because when you fill out a bug report in the back of your mind you are thinking "this will do no good because the devs never fix things". You get frustrated because you have to deal with these imbalances everytime you log in and you have empty promises that have been fed to you for months by the developers saying "we will fix these and fix them soon". The pikeman profession in the game is in such dire need of help it's not even funny. It's barely playable and has been so since launch and even the developers admit that the profession deserves attention. Now all pikemen will have to wait until after Jump to Lightspeed to get the much needed fixes they deserve.
Many professions were not fleshed out in beta (since it was so rushed) so they have been promised fixes and enhancements post launch. However since so much of developer time is spent in developing JTLS or fixing stability issues etc these fixes and enhancements get pushed back. The Ranger profession has been waiting since August 2003 for promised enhancements to their profession for example. Other professions had their abilites "temporarily" downgraded to avoid certain exploits however these "temporary" downgrades still exist today. Bounty Hunters for example had their Jedi mission payouts "temporarily" reduced from 150K to 15K because of exploits in the system. It's been nearly a month now since this "temporary" fix went in and it will probably be in for another few months or so. Specialized battlefields (which were special staging grounds for empire/rebel conflicts and a big part of the GCW) were "temporarily" shut down over 6 months ago.
I cannot recommend Star Wars Galaxies and based on past precedent with SOE's policies in terms of MMO development (never fixing anything) I cannot recommend JTLS.
It will be a buggy expansion on top of an already buggy game. Since the expansion will be extremelly buggy on release (they have yet to release something that WASN'T buggy) their latest announcement of delaying fixes in the CORE game until after the expansions release gives us even less hope. They will probably spend months fixing the stability and bugs in the expansion so this means the promised fixes that players have been waiting on since late last year will get pushed back even further.

Well it's been out now for nearly 13 months, and although there have been some nice additions, here is my shortlist of 'features' of SWG:
- Serious bugs that were identified in beta (over 13 months ago) and still have not been fixed
- A quest system where 80% of the in-game quests give you little to no reward
- PVP is a complete joke
- The almighty Galactic Civil War is non existant
- The dev team promised a complete overhall to the combat system in September 03, last week their representative said it will be delayed untill after October
- In an effort to keep the high-end players who were threatening to leave due to boredom, they implemented a new dungeon, which due to being stupidly difficult, and nigh uncompletable, is a complete waste of time
In short, the SWG dev team is unprofessional and exibit an astounding ability to have no idea what the player community wants, nor the problems they face, despite the numerous threads on the forums highlighting the glaringly obvious problems with SWG.
The only real content this game has to offer is created by the players themselves, in the from of Roleplaying, but they are in the minority.
AVOID AT ALL COSTS
If SWG is so broken, how can this be any better

You've read it in the other reviews, so I'll not waste much space recovering what others have stated. The game this expansion requires is currently broken in several key areas. This expansion is being pushed out WAY too quickly BEFORE things are scheduled to be fixed with the original game. As a result, you'll have some cool ships and be able to fly...but broken quests, loot, combat, PvP and PvE, levelling, and most importantly, the lack of content will force you to regret your purchase. I'd wait if I were you, and check back later. For now, all you'll be getting is a glorified IRC client.
Well...

If they couldn't get the core functions of the game to work then what makes you believe that this is going to work any better?
Word of advice: Stick to "X-Wing vs. TIE Fighter"

"Jump To Lightspeed" is a decent product. However, it is a decent product welded to a horrible product that you have to buy to play it. It's the space-flight/space-combat expansion to "Star Wars: Galaxies." And for that, my review of JtL drops from five stars to one.
The problem with SWG is that it recently went through a massive in-game redesign (the so-called "Combat Upgrade"), converting it from an unbalanced, buggy, yet challenging game to (ta-daa!) an unbalanced, buggy, BORING game that should have remained in beta for massive bug squelching and game-balance work. Unfortunately, this new combat system was rushed to release so another expansion ("Rage of the Wookiees") can be released May 5th as part of the merchandising push for the new Star Wars movie.
For those of you who have played LucasArts' award-winning single-player game, "X-Wing vs. TIE Fighter," you would be on very familiar ground with "Jump To Lightspeed." I suspect that this expansion is a direct port of "X-Wing's" code. If you are a casual player looking for good Star-Warsy space combat, I'd strongly urge you to stick with "X-Wing," and avoid SWG altogether, including this expansion.
