Metroid Prime is excellent in every significant way. Graphics, sound, level design, game play, everything about this game is about as good as it can be. This game offers everything the previous installments in the Metroid series offered plus much more. Anyone skeptical about Metroid's move into 3D need fear not, this game is true to the series and offers an even greater depth to the game not seen in earlier installments. I could gush with praise about every aspect Metroid Prime, but instead of reading my review you should be getting your own copy of it instead and experience it for yourself. The reader can go to IGN or Gamespot for in depth reviews of this game if they want a better idea of its excellence. This is an A+ game and any reviewer who doesn't say as much probably has a hang-up of some sort.
There are a few things about the game I could nitpick. I would have liked to see a free-look mode in the player controls, I found that the controls could be frustrating at times when battling monsters or when jumping through an environment. It could also become tiring battling the same monsters over and over after they respawn in the same areas, and the game calls for a lot of backtracking over the same areas as one gains new powers. But as I said, these are just nitpicks - Metroid Prime is a non-stop orgy of gaming goodness. If you like video games do yourself a favor and buy a copy, it is one Nintendo's greatest contributions to the genre.
One of the worst action games ever...

Everyone was talking about this game by the time I bought it... 10 scores, 5 stars... So, of course, I bought. I'm asking: why?
The story is about a mercenary - Samus Aran. I'm not very expert in Metroid stuff, but I knew the Chozo - a race - created her to be a warrior. The Chozo were "the big guys", with superior technology and stuff... Until one day, some bad guys called the Space Pirates killed most of the Chozo. Samus survived. She grew up and now she's a great warrior. The game is in future, of course... The planet you'll be in is called Tallon IV... Well, let's go to the real review:
- Graphics: OK, here I must say the game rules. The graphics are really perfect. The raindrops fall over your visor, when it's really hot your visor changes, or when it's cold... I mean... This is one of - if not THE - the best GameCube graphics ever. One of the best game graphics EVER!
- Fun: This is where the problem begins... The game is too hard. You must spend something like 40 hours to beat it without a walkthrough... And you have to walk A LOT to go from a place to another one...This makes you REALLY tired... The boss battles make your fingers hurt really bad! You'll surely be confused about controlling Samus. It's really hard too. Every time I play this game, it gives me a big headache. If you think it's fun to be with a big headache and fingers hurting, then this is your game...
- Educative: I can't see anything educative here... There isn't any blood, so don't worry with that... Violence? Well, you're just shooting aliens and "bad guys". You aren't killing humans or anything.
After all, you just might rent it, or don't even play it... It'll let you really down..

Metroid Prime is beautiful, intricate, massive, well thought out, and imaginative. Too bad it's not more fun to play.
Visually, some apects of the game are impressive. When it rains, you see drops of water on your visor. Some flashes of light let you catch a glimpse of Samus' reflection on the inside of the visor. I appreciate that attention to detail.
Unfortunately, the visual aspects of the game don't keep the play from being incredibly tedious and often repetitive. The fact that the world is massive is a plus, but the fact that after each completed task, you wind up trudging back across all the areas you've been through to get to the next task is a big minus. The fact that you have x-ray and thermal vision is a plus, but the fact that you wind up having to switch between those different views to scan many rooms three times is a minus. Jumping puzzles are just a minus.
Probably my biggest complaint is that the combat is clunky. When you are ambushed by enemies, it's just a real slow turn to face them, and by the time you get turned around, they're behind you again. Couple that with the fact that the view through the visor allows for no peripheral vision, and the game feels more like a '77 caddy rather than a Ferrari.
A lot of creativity went into this game. It deserves to be more fun to play...but it just isn't.
To Dark!

Hey, I like all the shooting and finding new items and such, but what fun is that when you can't see anything? You have to sqint to see what your doing, and in some parts, you can't see at all! I did rate it 3 stars because I will admit that shooting at a hoard of bad guys is really fun. So if you want to buy this, DON'T! Rent it. It's up to you weather you like it or not, but make sure you just don't go out and purchese it.
Very fun. Very original. Very long.... :)

I'll not spend a tremendous amount of time rehashing what has already been said about this tremendous, innovative game. Suffice it to say that despite its shortcomings the game is engaging on multiple levels. I just can't give the game five stars because of those previously-mentioned shortcomings.
The backtracking necessary in the game seems superfluous and created only to extend the length of the game. Running back and forth between levels is just not my idea of a good time. An earlier reviewer also commented on a player's inability to save at any time. Again, this seems like an artificial impediment to extend the length of the game. I don't really see why the designers went to such great lengths to extend the gameplay time when clearly the game has plenty to offer without these "enhancements." Additionally, while the game has a minimal storyline, it really doesn't contribute anythign to the overall experience of the game.
Before I'm bashed over the head by Metroid fans, let me acknowledge that I'm a fan of the series and of this game as well. To me it seems worthwhile to acknowledge the flaws of the game in the hopes that the designers make real improvements when it comes time for Metroid Prime II.
A major step up in graphics, a major step down in gameplay.

I LOVE Metroid. I hated Metroid 1 because it was too difficult, but I thoroughly enjoyed Metroid ][ because of the new abilities and the decreased difficulty (the game is now medium difficulty). The Spider Ball was unique and an excellent addition to the Metroid series that never made it back until Prime, where it was severely limited in its use. The Space Jump has continued on through the entire series, and I was sorely disappointed to see it so limited in Prime. I loved Super Metroid's ability to combine beams and turn off certain power-ups, but that never became a tradition. Even though beams are combined in Fusion and Zero Mission, they fail to even think of programming combinable beams for Prime. The Screw Attack won't be making it into Prime and we have to wait for it's limited return in Prime 2 where they FINALLY introduce wall-jumping, which Samus didn't learn until Super Metroid from the Etecoons on Zebes. However, all of these faults do not even possibly compare to the lack of Speed Boosting in Prime MUCH LESS THE ANGER THAT ENVELOPS ME WHEN I THINK ABOUT HOW SHINESPARKING HASN'T BEEN IMPLEMENTED. IT'S BECOME A STAPLE OF METROID'S GAMEPLAY SINCE SUPER AND THEY FAIL TO IMPLEMENT IT......... ... ... ...idiots. They could easily do it, but Retro doesn't want to.
Anyways, I still think even with all its flaws that it honestly IS the best game on Gamecube and every Gamecube owner should outright buy it if they haven't already. Even with what it lacks from the series, it still is enjoyable since it retains the power-up hunting gameplay that made the rest of the Metroid series so addictive. The only other game like this on Gamecube is Wind Waker, which was thoroughly enjoyable, especially if you're into Zelda.
Wierd as hell but GRAVY!

I've only played the old NES, SNES, etc. Metroids back in the day a few times, but they're all pretty goofy alien shoot 'em up games which are surprisingly addictive.
Other than no nude codes for Spamus Arang or whatever the biotch's name is, this game rocks in a lot of ways. The graphics are outstanding, particularly the Morph ball and some of the backgrounds. The sound is cool, and the soundtrack is alien and at times kinda eerie and exotic. The weapons and upgrades are much cooler than the rest of the games in the series due to the vastly improved graphics of the good old 'Cube. The story is a bit hard to get into if you don't know a whole lot about the other games, but it's unique and even fantastic at times.
This game is a winner, BUT probably won't appeal to all gamers due to it being a bit on the wierd side. (But hey this is Metroid, and it's not supposed to be realistic really).

The Graphics are tight and the enemies are fierce and interesting. The game has many twist and turns. It's not your run of the mile kill them all to advance. Each level has interesting enemies and you get plenty of fire power. The Graphics are astonishing and will leave you wanting more.
Best game on Gamecube, hands down.

Metroid Prime is easily the best game on the GameCube. In fact, it makes Halo look like a complete joke. When everyone heard Metroid was going to be in the first person, people freaked out. Admittadly so, it just didnt seem right for a Metroid game to be a First Person Shooter. Then, Nintendo decided to let an unknown studio by the name of Retro Studios develop the game. People freaked out even more. But amazingly, the game turned out awsome. This is unlike any first person shooter you have ever played. Its actually a lot about exploration and puzzle solving than it is stright up shooting. One thing that has been a problem for most FPS games that Prime pulls off amazingly well is platforming. Before Metroid Prime, platforming in a FPS was usually akward, difficult, and frustrating. But somehow it works in Prime, you can easly jump from platform to platform, over gaps and up stairs, without ever missing your target or feeling frustrated. Metroid Prime is also just difficult enough to the point where it is never frustrating, but always a good challenge.
Godd game
