Great Game that still holds up

I never owned a gamecube, I bought this to play on the Wii after loving Metroid Prime 3. This game is a ton of fun that will easily give you about 30 hours of game play, with some stunning visuals (looks great on the wii). I agree with one of the reviewers about the save system. Scattered recharge stations are fine, but if I'm laying my money down for this game, I'd like the ability to save at will, especially if I may not have an hour to sit down and play. But that's a small negative for overall very excellent game play. For metroid series fans, there a lot of familiarity here, almost as if all the best features of Super Metroid were translated to 3D.

And for the people playing this on the Wii, first off, get a good Game Cube controller to play it b/c you can't use the Wii mote or the classic controller. I bought a wireless Nintendo Wavebird controller off Ebay and its perfect for it. Also, make sure you buy a Gamecube memory card first before playing otherwise you can't save your game.

A beautiful, beautiful work of boredom

I live in Europe and here the game isn't out til next year. But, since I have a USA GameCube, I pre-ordered and imported this. All my friends loved this, but I was so disappointed. The game is pretty good until you escape from the ship at the start - then, you're thrown into an area with little clues of where to go or what to do. Looking at the map reveals blue areas that you haven't visited yet, trekking back to reach these reveals that in fact you need a new power up to get to them, so you then need to go half way back across the level to try and find it.

Controls are also not terrible but the analog stick is used to both move and you must hold L trigger to direct camera movement, meaning you will stop moving - very annoying, I was hoping for the excellent controls of TimeSplitters 2.

All in all, don't buy this if you're expecting action. I've tried many times to start again from the beginning and get back into the game, but failed. From what I've heard from my hyped up friends who also have it, you should expect a game based more on reading and exploring. Not my type, sorry... the rating of 9.8/10 for this game is NOT deserved - a score like that should appeal to everyone.

Not so great after all

When I bought this game I thought it would be great. All I heard were could things about it, but once I started playing it I saw that it was not so great after all. The graphics are ok but the gameplay and sound effects are weak. Some of the different world are neat and all but they're just to darn big. I spent four hours just trying to find my way around in the second level. It's just a waste of time to have to find your way around, especially when you get lost. Its a good game if you like puzzles or really long adventure games but if you dont I would'nt suggest for you to buy this game.

NOT SO GOOD 5/10

This game is not challenging, especially if you've played any other first person shooter on another platform. It's a dull run-through of a pre-set path, where it's extremely difficult to find anything interesting to do.

Wouldn't recommend it at all.

Good game, but no Halo.

That's right. Let me tell you something about Metroid Prime: It's a good game, but it does not come near the level of gameplay, nor does its graphics come close to Halo's. But it is a good game, don't get me wrong. The graphics are very nice (very colorful), but the shading is not as tight. The controllers are a bit awkward, but you'll get used to them as you play more and more. I don't like the fact that you cannot look up unless you hold onto the R button and scroll up and down. The GameCube Controller has two joysticks, why not utilize this and make the set-up like Halo's (game aside, this is the best configuration for an FPS on a console). Or, at least give the option to change the set-up if desired. The Gameplay is really nice though. One option I like about Metroid Prime is the fact that you get to scan things and learn what they are or what they do, etc. But there I run into another problem. A LOT, and I mean a lot of scanning. You need to scan certain objects in order to gain information to continue the game, and that's fine. But having to do it every few feet is very repetitive and slows down the game a bit. But there is another cool feature past the colorful graphics and good smooth gameplay (due to good framerate) and that's the ability to turn into a morph ball. In order to maneuver through and around tight spots, you can change into a ball, in 3rd-person perspective. Another con I have is the targeting system (this goes along with the controllers), because of the set-up, you can't simply aim yourself at an enemy or a target, you have to press a button and lock on, then you have to press another button to fire. So, until you get used to it, the ability to quickly fire a multiple of times at one target might be difficult.

Metroid Prime is probably the best game for Gamecube, right up with Resident Evil Zero. Some people might feel it is enough alone to purchase a GameCube, not for I...but play it first and see what you think. And if you already have a GameCube then you need to buy this game, like I said, it's one of the best, if not the best for the system. But remember, there are no aspects of this game that are better than the almighty Halo.

Pros:
Engaging Gameplay
Colorful Graphics
Morph Ball
Multiple Suits
Different Visor Views

Cons:
Repetitive Scanning
Awkward Controls
Not Halo

Good game but flawed

Well it's been awhile, but MP is finally here. Did it live up tot he name? Almost. First the good. Graphics are sweet. Unreal atmoshere and smooth framerate. The textures are blurry for a GC game, but they're decent. The lighting and particles are a sight to see. Sound is really well done as well. No voice acting at all but the sfx and music is top notch with pII support. But essentially, some fundamental gameplay flaws make the game needlessly frustrating. One of the flaws is the controls. I disagree about the current perspective being "ideal" - even when jumping, it'd be nice to look down at my feet before I leap and gauge how close to the platform's edge I am, but that is not possible. Jumping from and to platforms is almost always harder than it should be, not to mention the pot you're in when an enemy manages to get behind you when you're fighting a pack in front of you. Dual-analog would've made this perfection. Even after finishing the game just under 14 hours, I still find the controls unecessarily prohibitive. I know that a few weaksauce types fear and abhor the free look style controls of Halo/TS2, but there really should have been an option. Funny how the two aspects I *don't* like - the dull-as-dirt scanning and the limited prespective controls - came from Miyamoto. Again, that's what's symptomatic about the "new" Nintendo - dumbing their games down just a little too much with overthink and overdesign. The morphing ball is also a nice touch though, although nothing that evolves the game.

I can say, that I would enjoy Metroid quite a bit more if it had the option for a non-fixed free look, and there is NO situation I've encountered in over 14 hours of play that would've been compromised by it. It's missing for one reason, and that reason is that console-style FPS controls are very daunting to novice gamers as well as many "hardcore" gamers, since they've only been around for a short time. I know a couple people who breathed a sigh of relief when they heard the controls "were like Goldeneye and not Halo," just because they couldn't really adjust to the free-look style. This doesn't excuse the lack of an OPTION to change the controls, though. I would also enjoy better visor controls, since the D-pad requires me to take my hand off the analog stick in order to scan in the heat of battle (to find boss weak points), although some of the blame could be leveled at the Gamecube controller and it's relative paucity of buttons. There's also a real lack of Zelda-style context sensitivity which makes these various buttons/pad presses necessary.

Also, the game is a single player game, with no multiplayer whatsoever, whch really brings dow the replay value and the game is pretty short as is. But all in all, it is a decent game. Just don't expect it's gameplay to match it's visual and sound presentation.

Ignore the LOLs

This is a half-decent FPS. However, it's nothing short of a mockery of Metroid. The gameplay is clunky, the graphics are poor (highlights are not white light, consult any second year illustrator and he'll tell you), and the controls are terrible.

A Honest Expectation From a Fan, a Gamer, and a Player

The game is not out yet, nor has it really shown too much gameplay yet. I am a huge fan of the original games and I find my opinion on this game mixed. For instance, I agree turning the game into a First Person Shooter might be good or bad. Personally I believe it will be a negative of the game. The third person mode seems to only appear when you turn into a ball, and that might make the game less memorable. I remember the original games, specifically the one on Super Nintendo. I believe the third person perspective is a positive idea because the games style and finesse is generated from it. In Super Metroid, Samus never said anything in the game. She only spoke briefly at the beginning of the game to sum up the story. But from then on she never said a word. She's alone on a planet of aliens, who could she talk to?

It sounds like I'm getting off the point but I'm not. I'm trying to say that the 3rd person side scrolling in the Super Metroid told the story without any dialogue. If you can see out of her helmet it promotes a more panicy and closed minded viewpoint. Super Metroids visual style in the game was that no matter what was happening Samus was the character you were watching, and the things that are happening you see at all times. It takes away from the game if Samus tries to run, and your just suddenly cut down which often happens in FPS's.

I also believe that older games on Super Nintendo had a certain style to them, because they didn't have the graphics to support simple stories or backgrounds like they do now. To get ahead of the rest in games back then you had to use innovation and style instead of graphics. This game looks graphically impressive, but as far as gameplay, it appears to be just another idea. The Idea of making it a FPS is a novel idea, but the transition HAS to be a choice. If you cannot change between first and third person at all times, this games going to take a dive.

I gave it 4 stars because I assume Nintendo won't botch this game, and it will be rather enjoyable dispite its possible flaws. I also think the First-Person-Third-Person dispute, while not totally able ruin the game, will promptly stop its rise to greatness. I think it will be a solid buy, but its hard to say if it'll be as good as only I can hope.

For the final word, I'd say it'll be a solid title, but maybe with some flaws that'll keep it out of the eye of fame.
