Too much like work

If you are looking for a fun "escape" for a while look somewhere else - Metroid Prime is too much like work. As many have written the graphics are excellent. However gameplay is monotonous and, particularly near the end, boss fights become too difficult.

The game involves exploration of the "vast world" of Talon IV. However, literally and figurately this translates into being stuck in a hole, rut, ravine, arena, canyon, cave or tunnel somewhere. In terms of gameplay: go to hole A, shoot your arm cannon 5 or 10 times, then go to rut B and do the same thing with (perhaps) different looking critters. Acquiring new gadets like the spider ball or grappling beam doesn't change this fundamental pattern. There is never a point in the game from which you gain a panaromic view of the surroundings. There is no point, for example, to which you can climb to gain a view of the Chozo Ruins from the Phendrana Drifts or vice versa. There is always some sort of wall looming above you. This is, you could say, a downer. In this respect the "vast world" of Talon IV can quickly feel like a confining prison (excellent graphics notwithstanding).

One issue that several people have remarked on is how long it takes to look around. Glancing down to see where your feet are before jumping from one ledge to another is a slow procedure. After a while you get the hang of guestimating where your feet are. However there are many holes in which you are forced to make a great many jumps to work your way up. If you miss and fall you have to repeat the process. Unless you enjoy monotony this is pretty tedious.

Some of the boss fights can also get old fast. If you lose you must work your way back from the last "save station," perhaps jumping up a series of ledges and fighting off the same old group of nuisance foes, in order to reach the boss again. The actual battle may go on for a very long time and entail a great deal of shooting, rolling, running, jumping, charging weapons, changing visors, alternating weapons, etc. All of this requires constant rapid pressing of numerous buttons in many combinations - a recipe for calloused aching fingers at best or tendonitis at worst. Most players will lose against the tougher bosses quite a few times.

Games need to be challenging to be fun. However if the challenges lack variety and are too difficult games can become tiresome and annoying. Combine the several overly difficult boss fights with the endless jumping around in tunnels and ravines and you have a recipe for tedium.

I love FPS on PC's, and I loved Goldeneye on the N64. That being said, I did not like Metroid Prime one bit. Luckily, I got a good deal and picked it up for $12 but I still regret it. The game just isn't meant to be played on a controller. The gameplay is slow and boring. It even made me dizzy after 1 level of play. Do not buy this game... if you MUST play it, rent it only!

Terrible Game Do not Buy, anyone who compares this game to halo should really have their head checked out. The Graphics on gamecube are terrible, and I sold my gamecube to buy an Xbox. Not to mention that I got a terrible deal on selling my gamecube because no one wants it. This was one of the few games I bought for the terrible cube, and it is just a terrible game. We will just have to see what system is still standing after a year or two if I could put all my money on one system it would be Xbox. This game has absolutely no story line and has some of the worst graphics I have seen since Nintendo 64. To all those gamecubers out there my suggestion to you is to bite the bullet spend a couple bucks and buy an Xbox. Just remember there is no power greater then "X"

Not really a Metroid game, technically.

I'm only giving this game 1 star because I don't like First Person Shooters. And that's all this game is. If you already know you don't like playing FPS games, don't bother trying it.

I say it's not Metroid because a game in a franchise should be at least slightly comparable to the FEEL of the previous games.

Side-Scrolling Mario (or Zelda) going to Third-Person 3D Mario (or Zelda) is still okay. It's close enough to the feel for you to get used to it. It still FEELS like Mario (or Zelda).

I'm sure this is an incredible example of an FPS game; the music is incredible, the graphics are gorgeous. But it is NOT a Metroid game. It doesn't FEEL like a Metroid game. Oh well.

Tedious and easy

This game is not challenging, especially if you've played any other first person shooter on another platform. It's a dull run-through of a pre-set path, where it's extremely difficult to find anything interesting to do.

Wouldn't recommend it at all.

HORRIBLE game. the graphics in this game are no where close to what peole say they are. the gameplay is dull. all you do is load up your guns then shoot. the storyline if you can call it that. does not compare at all to halo. and the game was completely boring. i expected it to be a first person shooter. but this game makes you go around and collect. i had to do tedious collecting for hours. before i could get back into the action. theres no storyline. and the controls are a travesty. youd think just one time. someone would bring up hey. this game has bad controls. its virtaully unplayable. but no one does. because there all tr==== gamecube su--==s the control makes fighting imposible. and you CANT customise it. the whole survival theme isnt here. because the game is easy as hell. with no challenge whatsoever. the only challenge the game gives you is controlling that atricious controller and camera. the main characther doesnt compare to the cool master cheif. there are no instresting characthers in the game. and if you find one good thing in this horrible apitimy of a game. the controls bugs and collection cruizes will ruin all of it. as far as being in halos leauge? why dont people just play halo instead of dissing it. and then theyll never leave there xbox. if you dont have an xbox. pick oneup today and buy halo.

It was so boring man I wanted to sleep. The best game I would say for action would be James Bond: Nightfire.

worst FPS EVER!!!!

First of all i love first person shooters but this is horrible. its repetitive and lame. i like the Metroid ames on GBA BUT the first person perspecive really is no good. and the graphics are great but the controls are bad. why is there a lock on button on a FPS??
Also there is way too much reading and no voice acting. and there is no story at all. There is also way to much backtracking to areas you have already been too. Just avoid this pitiful excuse for a game if you can. get Resident Evil 4 instead or Mario Kart those games are classics.
