I received this game as a Christmas present because it was on my Christmas list. I was really sold by the marketing hype and the screenshots I'd seen in all the gaming magazines so I really wanted this game! Unfortunately, it didn't live up to my expectations.
I played it for about 15 minutes the day after Christmas and I just couldn't get into it. First of all, you CANNOT play a first person shooter without a mouse. You just can't do it. No matter how well tweaked a controller may be, you just cannot ever play a FPS as comfortably and as accurately as you can with a mouse. I couldn't play the game without constantly thinking, "I could play this so much better with a keyboard and mouse". Playing with the controller got old really fast. Also, the way the controller is configured is beyond stupid. I just never got used to the button layout, it's counter intuitive.
I didn't play the game again until about a month later when I was bored. This time, I played for several hours. While I was mildly entertained at times, ultimately I kept thinking, "This is it? This is what all the hype was about?" It's not that good. It's not even really fun. You walk around and explore and you have to constantly (every time you enter a new room) stop what you're doing and hit a button to enter "Scan Mode" to scan the room for anything that might help you on your mission. This becomes old really quickly too. You just get so frustrated knowing that you're going to miss something if you don't stop and scan the entire room pixel by pixel looking for something. ARGH!!!
I don't know why they made this game a FPS. I *HATE* playing Metroid this way. Simple jumps that can be done without thinking become incredibly hard. You never really know how far you are from the edge of a platform and you end up falling all the time trying to find out. ARGH!!! I HATE THIS GAME!!!
The graphics were supposed to be out of this world but I didn't see anything all that impressive. In fact, because the graphics were so hyped up I expected to see some amazing things. I ended up seeing blocky texture mapped polygons all over the place.
I'm selling this game on ebay. Hopefully someone else will be able to enjoy it because I thought it was just horrible.
Not really a Metroid game, technically.

I'm only giving this game 1 star because I don't like First Person Shooters. And that's all this game is. If you already know you don't like playing FPS games, don't bother trying it.
I say it's not Metroid because a game in a franchise should be at least slightly comparable to the FEEL of the previous games.
Side-Scrolling Mario (or Zelda) going to Third-Person 3D Mario (or Zelda) is still okay. It's close enough to the feel for you to get used to it. It still FEELS like Mario (or Zelda).
I'm sure this is an incredible example of an FPS game; the music is incredible, the graphics are gorgeous. But it is NOT a Metroid game. It doesn't FEEL like a Metroid game. Oh well.
Like Metroid, But Only 3D!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Metroid Prime ROCKS!!!!!!!!!!!! I don't see why anyone could hate it! There's a large amount of enemies and weapons. I really like how you can choose from the ice, power, phazon, wave, and plasma beam, the flame thrower, ice and super missile combos, and the grapple beam, morph-ball, spider ball, bomb, power bomb, space jump power-ups and a choice of visors such as the scan and X-ray visors. These make up for the super long length and super hard enemies you fight.
The only flaw is that the music isn't classic. No theme songs or anything like that. But the SFX and graphics are superb. I really recomend this game, it'll keep you glued to the screen!!!!!
This is the greatest game for all three systems

Gameplay: 10/10
Difficulty: HARD!!!
This game basically is the continuation of the adventures of the most famous bounty hunter in the galaxy...Samus Aran. It begins after Samus' victory on destroying the space pirate base on planet Zebes with a distress beacon sent from a mysterious planet in the Zebes solar system. Samus lands on a space pirate space craft in low orbit over the once biological paradise of Tallon IV. Your first mission is to investigate the ship and destroy it. After you escape in just minutes you see the eery familiar shape of Ridley....make that Meta-Ridley. You follow in pursuit into the atmosphere of Tallon IV. What follows is an immense quest to find the source of a cancerous substance known as phazon....what is phazon? When the chozo race settled on Tallon IV to escape from their materialistic world and live with nature...a comet impacted the planet...bringing with it the "great poison"--phazon. Your journey will be exciting, frightening, sad, and important...for the chozo prophecized the "hatchling" Samus Aran to save their world from phazon.

Metroid Prime is easily the strongest title for the Nintendo GameCube, a system in desparate need of more games. The latest Metroid is a mind-blowing FPS / adventure based on the planet "Tallon IV". Metroid features an expansive world made up of large sectors that all intersect in various locations via elevators, not unlike the previous Metroid games. The story is based around the disappearance of the "Chozo", a peaceful, ancient species whose civilization came under attack by the arrival of an alien energy called "Phazon" which slowly corrupted the Chozo and drove them to extinction, but not before they sealed it underground, guarded by twelve sentinels. Retro Studios did a fine job in the level designs, particularly in the "Chozo Ruins", where the striking architectural surroundings and artistic patterns give the gamer the impression that, long ago, the Chozo were an advanced and thriving species. This is also the first time that Metroid really has a somewhat developed and involving plot; though most of the extensive text isn't really worth the time, this is the first Metroid game with scale and scope beyond simply the size of the map, and Samus Aran has a special relationship with the Chozo that unfolds over the course of the game.
By far the most impressive aspect of Metroid Prime is the graphics, which, for a console game, are cutting-edge and breathtakingly beautiful. The GameCube renders the high-res textures in fine detail, the sense of depth is stunning, and the frame-rates are absolutely liquid. Each sector is richly colorful and highly unique, in the architecture, the lighting, and the overall mood. The visual effects produced by the thermal and x-ray visors are utterly convincing. Retro Studios has totally embraced the GameCube's sophisticated hardware and produced a feast for the eyes that the PS2 couldn't dream of rendering.
The sound and atmospheric effects are both superb, and it offers Dolby Surround for those with the gear. I think some of the music could have been better written, or perhaps have been more minimal, though I did enjoy the references to the music of the previous Metroid games, and there are some dark droning synths that can make the mood rather chilling, particularly in the "nether regions" of Tallon IV.
I can't quite figure out why Nintendo had an outside developer create one of their most prized titles, but they far exceeded my already high expectations. Metroid does have a few flaws worth mentioning, however. For one thing, being strictly limited to first-person perspective (unless you're using the Morph Ball) can be a little hampering, sometimes even claustrophobic. All of the peripheral indicators- missiles, beam selection, and life energy- take up valuable viewing space, and at times it can be very difficult to see the environment. However, I think that Samus's "perspective" was supposed to be a key element, because sometimes the environment interferes- steam from a pipe creates condensation that makes it more difficult to see, as well as certain enemies who produce a very believable-looking TV static effect. So, I suppose, the narrow view is part of the challenge of the game, but it can be annoying to the gamer. Metroid has always been a very jumping-intensive game, and carrying that element into FPS was a little awkward- the visor view makes it difficult to quickly see how close Samus is to the edge of a platform, and timing the "Space Jump" can be clumsy. These problems indicate that an optional third-person perspective would have benefitted the gameplay tremendously. Finally, sometimes you wish that you could side-strafe or turn a little bit faster- if there is an enemy directly behind you, you're probably gonna get nailed, regardless of how well you can play.
While I can't say that the game has a lot of replay value (though I understand that there are multiple endings based on the time it takes to beat the game), Metroid Prime is one of those rare games that raises the bar and sets new standards by which console games are judged. Hopefully, in March 2003, Nintendo will again re-define console gaming with the latest "Zelda" game. Metroid Prime has given the GameCube a much-needed boost, and hopefully more developers have the same intentions. All we can do is wait.
Why compared to Halo??

Excuse me, but why is the editor of Xbox editor writing a review for a Nintendo game? "Amazon.com E3 Preview
Xbox editor Mike Fehlauer said this game looks like Halo..." and why does he compare the two? Metroid Prime stands on its own and doesn't need comparisons to any other games. It didn't win "Game of the Year" for nothing. If you don't own this game and have a GameCube, then you owe it to yourself to pick up this game. This game is amazing.

According to the reviewers at www.game-revolution.com this was the only cube game to get an A. With frickin good purpose too! I have seen MOVIES that didn't look this good! The graphics are one of the best, if not #1 that I have ever seen. Which was a BIG surprise to me when I got it when it first came out. I was expecting some half-assed schemed system of movies that made it look better than it was. Well, there are quite a few cut scenes but just to show u the new room you have just reached. I got this game with a guide. Find it if you can, I've never used it! Not that it's a simple game, HELL NO! I just perfer to go into everything not knowing what the heck I am doing. Did you think Samus knew how to kill whatever the heck that was that just whizzed by her ear? I do what comes to my mind, KILL IT KILL IT KILL IT!!!!! My first technique is to roll up into a little ball and roll away. Trust me gamers, it is much more pleasant when you can find something out for yourself. Trust me, playing this game in a dark room (DANGER may cause tunnel vision)will make you feel more like a true bounty hunter.
Samus is back. And she's not leaving so soon!

I remember when I first heard that they were going to make a new Matroid game. I just thought: "This is the bomb!" Well, then i heard it was going to be a first person shooter. Uh-oh. What would happen to ye old platformy feel that I loved for Metroid on the SNES? Well again, after i saw more and more infos, articles, pics, video trailers, I thought that it would probably not matter anymore. I also remember the day Super Mario 64 came out in 1996, and how I just ran at dawn to the nearest electronics shop to get my copy firsthand. Well, i think I will relive the experience on November 18. The only difference is I will have to bike. 10 miles! Yeah right! Like that's ever going to stop me!
