This game is ... awesome!!!!The graphics are amazing. You will truly be amazed by the variety of weapons, visors, and enemies.Like all good games,it has a few cons, like that you cant save when you want and you cant be in 3rd person mode when you want unless you are in morph ball mode which is where you can turn into a ball and roll around which allows you to get into small places where you usually would not be able to get. After the first level you lose practically all of your gadgets. You will be surprised at the different things you see on your visor like when you submerge and then come up the water runs down your screen, some times bug guts splatter and steam gets on your visor.I bought the strategy guide which helped ALOT!This game kinda long and sometimes difficult but it is WELL worth the time and money.

wow .. amazing transition to 3D

This has to be one of the most amazing and most successful tranformations of a 2D game into 3D. I never would have believed that a 3D Metroid game would be possible, but Retro Studios has proven me wrong!

Any fan of the older Metroid games will be concerned about the possible problems of bringing this series to the third dimension, and rightfully so. But Nintendo and Retro Sudios have done the impossible ... this game manages to feel like good old Super Metroid while at the same time managing to have an incredible 3D experience. The look of the game, from Samus' space ship to the good old missle icon are exactly right. (The only thing I'd change would be the appearance of doors.. they aren't "bubbly" enough :)

Not only does the game look right, but it also plays right. It has the classic powerups (complete with 3rd person morph ball goodness!) and enemies (I didn't expect them to get things like Zoomers so right!) with the same great action (right mix of platform jumping, enemies, and bosses). Features such as bomb-jumping are carried over from the previous games with amazing accuracy. New environments, enemies, and powerups add a lot to the game as well. Plus, this game has by far the best story of the Metroid games.

Control is the main issue .. the earlier games had very simple controls. Making the jump to 3D and adding new features such as the visors requires many more controls. It will take some time to learn them, as they're probably a bit different from any other game you've played, but they've done a good job. In fact, it's improved somewhat over earlier games in that all of your weapons are at your fingertips. Changing beams was a pain in Super Metroid, requiring a long trip to the pause menu, and the original Metroid made it annoying to use missles, but with the GameCube controller there are enough buttons for everything.

The graphics and sound in this game are great. They certainly have the right character for a Metroid game (including the well-known music [such as the 'you got a powerup' music] and certain graphic designs [spaceship, icons, morphball, some enemies]) but they've been inserted into a beautiful 3D world. The landscape is a mix of familiar (the corridors, elevators, etc. of previous games) and new (great outdoor areas). The music is good, and the sound-effects are perfect.

I'm less than halfway through the game, but it has already provided several hours of great fun and I'm looking forward to the rest of it.

More Save Stations?

I give this game five stars hands down for seamless gameplay, nice visuals, and simple control. When you get stuck between a wave pirate and an elite, you will thank Retro Studios for the simpler controls. Samus is a little slow in the game, but not THAT slow. With the weapons she's packing, she can afford to be patient. She is a hunter, not a track sprinter.

To clear up one thing: You don't need to scan everything to 100% the game, you need to collect all the weapon and suit upgrades. If you want access to all the picture galleries, then you need to scan everything. which can be somewhat frustrating because many enemies only show up once when you first encounter them.

I wanted to mention that the placement of the save stations is key in the difficulty of the game, being able to save at anytime, or being able to have a save station in every other room would cause the game to be too easy. I thouroughly enjoyed this game and half of the reasoning is founded on the fact that I had to work harder and sustain myself until I made it to the next save station. I see the argument that it might need more save stations, but the game isn't so difficult that you can't finish it, you just need to change your strategy, perhaps realizing that this is not your average FPS and is more or less an exploratory adventure game would help. Going full boar into heated situations with space pirates is not a good strategy, they need to be dealt with no more than 2 or 3 at a time. So, pace your steps and pick them off when they can't surround you. Most of the enemies in this game have significant weaknesses that are easy to exploit. I prefer to use the Ice Beam followed closely by a missle or two. Another key is to use the power shots, they will always deal better damage than a bunch of smaller shots. Especially the Super Missles. The game gives you enough energy to make it to each save station. The hardest part of the game is the Boss of the Phazon Mines, and with the right strategy, it'll go down too. This is a flawless transition from a 2D environment to a more lush amazing 3D environment, I can only sit and smile in anticipation of Prime 2.

Those of you who are comparing this game to any others are in serious need of some classes on comparisons, no games can be compared to this one, it stands alone in it's own type. Not because it is better, but because it simply stands alone. I will not live in a world where only one or two games reign supreme, I like a variety and Metroid Prime definitly ups the ante in the variety department. The concept of liking more than one game should not be foreign to anyone. Halo is a good game. There are plenty of other games that are good. This one is too. I wasn't going to write a review, but I also wasn't going to let ignorant people take apart this game for reasons that I found it to be extrordinary.

A little different, but awesome addition

Metroid Prime is very different from the normal Metroid series in that it's first player. Now, don't get me wrong, it is NOT a shooter. It's a first person action game. What's the difference? Well..a shooter you go around killing everything you see. Metroid Prime has the aspects of..totally non-linear, you can go anywhere..you have all of her powers.the roller ball, different suits, different weapons, different visors...and you have to adjust to the different envorionments to use them. It makes you think sometimes instead of just "Kill kill kill" which is one of the greatest aspsects. On a lesser note, the graphics are so awesome. They've put so much detail in this that rain gets on your visor when it rains if you're out in the open and it bounces off your gun, underwater, if something explodes you can see your face in the reflection of your visor and Samus looks toward the explosion. It's so detailed, I can't begin to explain. The game is challenging, but what's the point of a game if you can beat it in a day, right? So my recommendation is to buy it. If you're so skeptical as to buy it, then rent it and see how you like it. In my opinion, it's one of the best Gamecube games there are.

The Hunter Reborn

For those who loved the classic NES Metroid and it's superior SNES version, you are in for an unconventional, but pleasant, surprise.
Metroid Prime takes place after the events of the NES Metroid game with famed bounty hunter Samus Aran tracking pirate activities on the planet Talon IV, which neighbors Zebes. After discovering that the planet has become a base of operations for the pirates, Samus descends planetside to have a look around. She discovers the pirates and their plans, as well as ancient secrets of the Chozo, and a horde of severely mutated creatures, including the dreaded Metroids.
The sheer variety of things to do would be enough to keep you coming back, but Retro Studios has made the action so enjoyable and the graphics so lush, that the game draws you in quickly and completely.

Unbelievable game play--Stunning in every respect.

I'm 43 years old and bought a GameCube for our children. Always having to have 'something' to play with I also purchased Metroid Prime. So my review takes into account middle age eyes and reflexes; not childrens, which are superior in every respect!
The game play is very nice, linear to the max. Weapons choices are good, if not great. Nice thing about MP, you don't need a degree in rocket science to figure out the controls; it's very fluid, very easy to grasp (which helps us middle agers out a LOT!).
MP's graphics truly show what the Game Cube can do; it doesn't have to take a backseat to any platform when a developer really spends time on a game for it. It is simply stunning. I find I like to just look around more than play the game, but that's a senior moment happening.
Metroid Prime is consistently rated in the absolute top 10 of all Game Cube games and it's easy to see why. Not for the under 10 set, as it can be violent. But it is so good and, frankly, addictive.

Highly recommended, though I know not many children will trust a middle ager for a review!

Stop reading and buy this game!

This is the best game for Gamecube, perhaps for any system on the market. If you have a GC, get this game. No excuses, trust everyone, you'll love it. The only thing wrong with the game is that it ends, I wish it could go on and on forever...

Best game on the Cube so far

I have had this game since it came out and I am on my third time playing it, each time I stop right before the main boss :(

I have to say this is my favorite game on the Cube, even beats out SSB:M for me. This game was well thought out in every way possible. The graphics are amazing and almost realistic. The worlds are drawn as if they are taken out of a book, along with the enimies. The lighting is fantastic as well as water effects and what not. Samus looks just like she should, sexy yet tough as a bounty hunter. The story, my god its just awesome. I know people are into Halo and all that but I can tell you this is a story line that goes deep into Samus's life and its just as interesting. I didnt know much about Samus before this game, and what I know now makes me want to play all the other Metroid games to find out more about her. The music in this game is absolutely perfect, just perfect for this game. The main theme at the beginning is what got me, just that! I was amazed they could come up with something so good and fit it so perfectly into the Metroid universe. The game is long, which is perfect for most people. The controls take some getting used to but I had no problems with them when I did get used to them. Overall this game is well worth any price in my opinion, and I would recommend it to everyone who wants a good shooter. And although I will probably get some bad feedback for this, I think its 10x more better than any Halo game. With that said I would say if you did like Halo, definitely try this game out.

Metroid Prime came out in late 2002 and shocked all compitition with its amazing graphics, emensis monsters, in a FPS with mostly a hunt and retreve mode.

The game of the year for 2002 was taken place in an uncharted world named Tallon 4. Samus came to destroy half of the remaning Space Pirates from the original 2D game Metroid, she loses most of her abilities in an crash in a pirate frigate early in the game, she must collect all of her missing arsanal of weapon, suit, and visior ,over the course of the game, from the far corners of Tallon 4's climate(Tallon overworld, Phazon mines, Magoorn caverns, Chozo ruins, and Phindendra drifts), hunt the space pirates ,as well as their leader Ridly, and recover the sacred Chozo artifactes to get in the Phazon crater to see what made the Chozo bird-like people to go away and turned the animals into monsters.

When I first heard that the Metroid series was coming back I was so excited. Super Metroid was one of the best games the SNES had to offer, but I was skeptical of the new first person view. My fears were totally unfounded; the game is probably one of, if not the best game the gamecube has to offer at the moment. The first person view fits the game very well, and they managed to keep that platformer feel rather than turn it into the typical first person fraggathon. Graphically, it's the most beautiful game I've ever seen. From the rag-doll physics of the flying space pirates crashing to the ground, to the reflection of Samus's face in her visor when there's a nearby flash. It's amazing. The controls are also ingenious and fit the gamecube controller perfectly. One thing I always hated about first person console games was aiming, but with the locking system in Metroid Prime, this is not a problem at all. It's simply amazing, so stop reading this and go buy the game.
