The Perfect Fighting Game

5 Rating: 5, Useful: 7 / 7

If you even remotely enjoy the fighting genre Soul Calibur is THE game to buy when Dreamcast finally launches in the West.

Soul Calibur scored 40/40 in Famitsu, Japan's leading video game magazine. Famitsu rarely hands out perfect scores, so you can bet this game caught my attention. I've been lucky enough to sample the delights of the Japanese version first hand a few days back and I can say it's simply stunning! I've been playing Soul Edge, Soul Calibur's predecessor, on PlayStation since it came out in Europe and have enjoyed it immensely. Soul Edge (Soul Blade in Europe) is one of the best fighting games on PSX, but after having played the sequel I can say Soul Edge and Soul Calibur aren't even in the same league!

Everything about Soul Calibur is top notch: The introscene (Namco's trademark), the ingame graphics, the music, the sound effects, the characters. But there's one element that really stands out, the element that's the hardest to grasp unless you've played the game itself: the gameplay. The sheer control you have over your character and his or her moves is simply incredible and the characters are incredibly diverse yet remarkably well balanced.

I really can't wait to get my hands on an American Dreamcast and a copy of this game so I can play this amazing game whenever I please. Soul Calibur is a MUST-BUY title. If you still aren't convinced you should get away from your Monitor & keyboard right now and run to a place where the game's up and running. If that doesn't convince, nothing will. I certainly know that convinced me.

An amazing fighting game for the dreamcast.

This game is absolutely unbelievable ! Soul Caliber for the dreamcast is undoubtebly the best Dreamcast fighting game. Using real weapons and different fighting styles, it is the most realistic in terms of graphics and it is the most accurate in terms of realistic sword battles. Created by Namco ( who brought you the Tekken series ) the gameplay is absolutly flawless. Soul Caliber for the Dreamcast even surpasses it's arcade predecessor.

Its a great game for those who like horses.

I've been an avid horse rider for many years and didn't expect a fighting game to appeal to my equestrian needs. The stallions and mares in this game dazzled my senses. When I buckled the saddle onto Kilik's back yelled out "giddyup" and pressed start I could almost feel the wind in my hair.this game is truly dazzling

On 9/9/99 you all should get your hands on a Dreamcast and Soul Caliber. This game is truly an amazing sight to behold and an even better gameplay experience. A comparison to the System-12 version shouldnt even be made because the Dreamcast version is so far better. It CRUSHES any other fighting game attempt to date.

BEST Fighter. Period.

Ok, ok, so maybe you aren't a fighter fan. Well, whether you are or aren't, this game is a must have for the Dreamcast. The gameplay itself is awesome with an easy learning curve. The more you play, though, the more moves you will learn to execute. This makes it a fun game for everyone. If you need another reason to buy this king of fighters (and maybe all launch titles), then read on. The graphics in this game cannot easily be described because they are so sweet. All the backgrounds are fully polygonal, including the caves stage (in the caves stage, you are fighting on a raft that is floating down an awesome cave with stalagmites, stalagtites, and even human structures like columns). Another interesting thing about the graphics in this game is the fighters themselves. The fighters are all fully polygonal and were made down to the finest detail. Their reactions and facial expressions are even more impressive, though. When you knock an opponent down and hit them in the ribs on the ground, they roll around in agony and their faces show they are in much pain. Throw in the killer music it has (for the Japanese version, anyway), and you got yourself a big hit. Buy this game because if you don't, beleive me, you WILL regret it!

This is the game to get with Dreamcast

Having just put in three days hard time with the import version, I can honestly say that no one has seen a game this impressive on any home system (or arcade for that matter.) The control is spotless and the to call the graphics jaw dropping is to insult them. Soul Calibur has very deep one player mode with hidden characters and items to unlock (read as lots and lots of stuff to do to keep the single player game from getting old.) Furthermore, the quality of the two player game is unmatched in any other dreamcast title except for NFL 2K. If you even like fighting games a little, you owe it to yourself to give this title a try.

Stunning graphics. Brainless AI.

All the good things you read about this game are true. It is a real pleasure to look at and to hear. The control is near-perfect (it takes a while to get used to manuvering around the fighting area), and responsiveness is so quick it's mind-boggling.

But as of yet, not one person has mentioned the one flaw in the game. The computer can't play. I don't mean it doesn't have that option; I mean it doesn't have any ability. I had never played the game before on any platform when I picked a random player and then - pushing random buttons - beat the game. Using the same strategy (random player, random buttons), I increased the skill level to 'Hard' and beat it again, still without losing a battle. I finally lost one fight when I increased the skill level to 'Ultra-Hard', the top level available (so far, anyway). Even then, I won three fights first.

The game is beautiful. And in two-player mode, it is a ton of fun. But you'll never get good playing against the computer. Don't take my word for it, just do yourself a favor and really play the game before you buy it. I'm sorry that I didn't.

I was told by my friend in a computer store that I had to get this game if I could only afford one at release. I took his advice and I could not be happier. The misson mode is long and very entertaining by making you meet the criteria of beating the battle. There is also the arcade mode that makes you feel like you have to beat it with each character. This is not easy, but everyone can do it. Even though two-player is like most games, I found myself have played 41 times in a row with my neighbor and neither of us were bored. All the characters and costumes makes it that fun. If you have a Dreamcast, you have to buy this game.

A must have for any Dreamcast owner.

As a 20 year veteran and designer of games, I would not be the first to jump up and purchase Soul Caliber because its "just another fight game". However, Soul Caliber is far more than that, I was totally surprised with this game and in a nutshell:

Soul Caliber demonstrates all the power that is Dreamcast. The graphics are visually stunning, the game play compelling (even for a fight game hater as myself) and the options are beyond any I have seen in the market place.

Soul Caliber is one of those things that has to be experienced to appreciate it. Not only does the game show you the "secret" moves and how to press the buttons to get things right, but has missions that you can perform and fighting subtleties that you don't notice until after you have played the game a few times.

Each character has a wide range of moves at their disposal and each character demonstrates their own personality in different ways. Everything from Voldo's snake like moves to Rock's headbutting attacks - this game is definately a must buy. Even if its just to watch Ivy tossing her hair out of her face after a angled grin. This is the first fighting game I have ever seen where the characters blink and move their mouths when they talk.

Since I hate fight games in general, I am assuming that fight game lovers will rush to pick up a copy of Soul Caliber.

OH MY GOD ! ! !

Take my word for this: You have no idea how good this game is. You might think you do, but trust me, you're wrong. It's much, much better. Graphically the most beautiful thing I've ever seen, the game plays well too. I've always had a problem with 3D fighting games, the control didn't make sense to me. But Soul Calibur's control is amazing, it just makes sense. You can almost feel your way through the fight. The computer is a bit easy to beat, but this is a minor flaw. If you buy only one Dreamcast game, make this it!
