The BEST Fighting game EVER!

5 Rating: 5, Useful: 2 / 2

The one MUST buy game for the Dreamcast! Besides the best, most detailed graphics of any game for the DC. Anybody will love this game. Novices can treat it as a button masher, and experts can pull off some AWESOME combos and special moves. Tekken and Street Fighter never stood a chance. I had played Soul Blade and Soul Edge in the arcades(I was a big fan), but this third installment beats the pants off the first two.

Every bit of this game reeked of effort. The mission battle alone makes this game great. By completing missions you can unlock special features.

By the time you've gotten every character, art poster, arena, mission battle, and costume, you'll be so good at this game you will always come back to play it. I've owned DC since 9.9.99, and although most of my time is now consumed by RE: Code Veronica, I can often be found perfecting my Soul Calibur skills

Best fighting game ever.

You just gota get this one. Just to start off you have to see the graphics. So far in all the games i've played (including Tekken Tag Tourny. for PS2) this is the best. exept for about 2 guys the characters are perfect. No jagged edges, Great color, and there clothes even move as they run. Also the framerate runs at about 60 which is about twice what i would want for a game. About the characters. You start with 10 but after you beat the game with the first 10 you will have unlocked 10 more. The characters have more moves then i could ever remember, and unlike alot of fighting games they all dont look the same. My fovorite part was the missions. Its the same as a regular battle just there are modifyers, such as your guy is poisened, or instead of dealing damage its first to give 16 hits. I really recomend you get this one.

Incredible Game

Ok, Plain and simple. If you have a Dreamcast you HAVE to buy this game. If you don't have a Dreamcast, you need to go buy one RIGHT NOW, just to try this game out. No matter how much I praise it, I still wont do it justice. I cannot believe a game of this caliber (no pun intended! ) is possible. The graphics are simply stunning, the animation is fluid, the character design is great, controls are precise, and the whole thing is just a joy to play. Add to this the fact that there are a ton of characters, costumes, stages, and game modes to unlock and you have a game that you just cannot pass on. This coupled with the fact that the game is offered at a ridiculously low price. Do yourself a favor and buy it now. You will be amazed at what you'll experience.

An addition to everyone's Dreamcast library.

This game is just unbelievable. It had an incredible impact on me. I used to make fun of Dreamcast back in the day, I was happy with my Nintendo 64. I laughed at Sega's next attempt to create a crappy system. Sega CD failed, Sega Saturn for the most part failed, and Sony and Nintendo ruled the skies (er, sales). But as 9/9/99 (my 12th b-day) drew near, I got sucked into the hype and went Dreamcast crazy after being hypnotized by that little swirl. Anyway, on the glorius day of 9/9/99, I picked up my Sega Dreamcast. The sales clerk advised me not to get Sonic Adventure, as she had heard of many copies being defective, and that a new shipment of fixed ones would be coming in a week or so anyway. So I went back to the great wall of games that Sega had displayed for my playing pleasure. I sadly put back the Sonic Adventure which I had my heart set on, and I had only enough money to buy ONE SINGLE game (hey, shelling out $200 for the system was enough money anyway), so I picked up Soul Calibur, having heard that it was a great game. I went home and hooked up that tiny little system, almost skeptical of what it could do. Then I opened up the jewel CD case that held Soul Calibur, and took it out (I was treated to a nice image of the beautiful Ivy as I did so) and popped it into the system with a sigh. I ALWAYS watch the intro to a game, it's like a tradition almost. I was amazed. Shocked. Blown away. The graphics, incredible. The music, loud and clear, the backgrounds, rich and detailed, and the characters, masterfully put together, not a polygon line in sight. No blockiness, just smooth lines. I was then treated to a menu selection of many different ways to play. I chose Arcade, just for a quick play, and was treated to a nice selection of about 10 or so characters, each different than the last, it was hard to choose, but then my teenage hormones chose for me, I picked Ivy almost instantaneously. The game started, and I saw a screen that showed a picture of Ivy and Kilik, my opponent. Then the match started. No, there's nothing wrong with that last sentence. The game actually started. No load time whatsoever. It just started. The gameplay is amazing. Control is swift and fluid, you can get your character to do just about anything imaginable. The feel is like that of the Tekken series (no surprise, Namco makes both series, the Soul Edge series and the Tekkens, of course), except that you can go anywhere on the arena. Yes, that's right, ANYWHERE. You can circle around your opponent with ease. Jumping does not play a big part in this game, in fact you barely use it, considering that the characters can barely jump a foot. It's very realistic, and I sorta like not jumping around all over the place. But, even without jumping playing a major role, the fighting is fast-paced. There are endless ways to fight, also. There is, obviously, the Arcade mode, along with a Time Attack mode, Survival mode, Mission mode (which has unique features I will explain later), and even a Practice mode where you can easily get the feel of the game and the characters. Even with all of the incredible graphics and sound, the thing that impresses me most about Dreamcast games is that they are HUGE! They are bigger than any games I have ever played, and they're also better looking than most games I've played. They manage to cram a lot on those little GD-ROMs. Onto the Mission Mode. This mode starts out as a training ground of sorts, where you fight against none other than the Edge Master himself, but quickly turns into a series of twisted challenges. This mode ties in with the Art Gallery. You earn points for completing certain tasks, such as beating an opponent while your life bar slowly drains, beating opponents whose HP can recover, etc., etc. You use these points to buy Art Cards, some of which open up hidden options. The Art itself is beatiful. The first 12 pieces are Japanese Animation (which I love) and tell the story, than the next few galleries are CG Animations of the characters and their costumes. There are over 200 pieces of Art in all, which I plan to collect one day. All in all, this is an incredible game, with nothing bad about it at all. I'm glad I started with this game and not Sonic Adventure (although I own both among other games now). A perfect 5 along with a perfect reccomendation from me, and I really think this should be an addition to everyone's Dreamcast library.

Soul Calibur

I'm a guy who doesn't like fighting games a whole lot and wouldn't consider one of them to be amongst his favorites. But Soul Calibur changed all that which will have you playing like a ...addict trying to unlock everything in the game.

It has a great long intro but my main man Voldo barely gets any acknowledgement but thats all right because if you play your cards right you can eventually edit the intro to what you see fit.

These are some of the best graphics I've seen on the dreamcast... hell any system. The backgrounds help the characters stand out nicely and each character has three different costumes. Great graphics, period.

It has orchestra music which is not my taste but it sounds all right. The voices of the characters are good but some of the chicks voices can get to be very annoying, like Ivy's laugh especially. But I think they captured the clang of weapons from every direction because those sound effects are great.

The control is very easy to pick up, the combo's can be learned in a few seconds and even have demos in practice mode. But the only problem is you can easily find one move in every fighters arsenal that will put an end to your opponent quickly by cheaping them out.

This game lasts a long time and will keep you looking for more things to accomplish: artwork, characters, stages. Many battle modes: Team, Survival, Arcade. This is one of the best games in terms of replay value and is probably the best game on the dreamcast. (*****)

Soul Calibur's inspired, intricate story is more vivid than ever in this arcade-to-Dreamcast title that redefines the "art" in martial arts. Watch the sun glint off your deadly blade as you slice and dice your way through lush 3D environments with amazing motion-captured precision moves. As you master the vast repertoire of Soul Calibur's attacks, throws, and weapons, you'll parry and punch your way closer to becoming the hero of Soul Calibur. There are lots of characters with special and unique personalities, fighting styles, new moves and weapons! Soul Calibur also includes 9 hidden characters and 2 new characters. Each character has new and improved moves! Real-time lightning and effects! Incredible motion-captured movement and amazingly cool realistic 3D graphics with great detail! And you can go to six new game modes:Time Attack, Mission Battle, Museum, Survival, Vs. Mode, and Practice! So if you have a Sega Dreamcast and you don't have this game I recomend getting it!!!

This launch title for the DC proves to be one of the best fighting games EVER!

This arcade to DC port has many extra modes, including a Mission Mode, where you have to defeat characters with a certain strategy.

The graphics are the best to date on the DC, as far as I have seen anyhow, and you will be amazed no matter how many times you play it.

Good old Namco added in a bunch of secrets as well, including bonus levels, extra outfits, different weapons, metallic mode, and more! And of course, you have your selection of unlockable characters as well.

Have I mentioned the true to the move authentic martial arts? That's right, each character uses a different martial arts weapon style, and all of them are authentic (with the exception of 2 characters, which have created styles). Trust me, I have been in to martial arts all my life, and no one
does it better than Namco.

This game is also good family fun! Not many good games can be played by both a 5 year old and a 50 year old. This is one of those rare games. The cool thing is, if you played your grandma at this game, she just might win!

Everything in this game is just so fluid! I can't believe my eyes sometimes!

GO OUT AND BUY THIS GAME! Bottom line. You've heard enough. Just do it. Go ahead. You know you want to. Do it! Come on! See? I think your wallet is shifting a bit.

Graphics: 10 - Lighting effects, very high polygon count
Gameplay: 10 - Easy to learn, challenging to complete
Realism: 10 - WOW...Master Bruce would be impressed
Sound: 10 - This game gives you the whole package
Pick Up & Play: 10 - Arcade to the max
Replay: 10 - Tons of hidden godies will keep you playing for a long time!
Fun: 10 - Layeth the Smacketh down on your friends
Controls: 10 - They did a very good job, could have rumbled more
OVERALL: 10

This is the definitive evolution in fighting games. I grew up on Street Fighter, then switched to Virtua Fighter, Tekken, Guilty Gear, Powerstone, etc... but nothing has ever captured the essence of fun as much as the Soul Calibur series has done. This is the one fighting game that strangely does not turn off those who are not into fighting games. It is accessible enough to newcomers for them to just pick up and have fun with, yet at the same time, it holds the depth that will keep veteran gamers playing this for years as long as they have access to good human competition. The characters are not completely balanced, but that won't become noticeable until you actually play against really good people for a long while. Still, none of the characters are a waste and the variety of fighting styles are extremely well thought out and fun to watch. I especially like how they have an exhibition mode where you can just watch characters performed their motion captured katas by themselves in an empty ring. This game is simply beautiful in many ways.

Don't listen to any of the naysayers; this is by far not only the coolest fighting game I have ever played, but the greatest game period. It truely has everything that one could possibly want: beautiful graphics, gameplay that is both simple and intricate, and infinite replayability.

More than a couple times, I have gotten so immersed in this game that I would look at the VCR clock and think "It can't really be 4:30 AM." The game is that good. I have had it since January and now 6 months later, I can get into it like I just took it out of the package.

If I can leave the world with one piece of wisdom that I have acquired over my life, it would be: "For the love of all things holy, BUY THIS GAME!"
