3 Words: Best Game Ever

Soul Calibur sets a new standard for fighting games. The animation is simply flawless, and the graphics are jaw-dropping. Soul Calibur has something for everyone. For button-mashers, you can select Kilik or Cervantes, and other people of that type will suit you fine. For more advanced players that like to study the moves list, select someone like Ivy or Maxi. The AI (Artifcial Intelligence) is somewhat of a dissapointment. True, if you up the difficulty level you will be given a challenge, but the enemy themselves don't really learn some techniques of some sort. The just learn to block, really, and that's basically how you might be defeated. Many fighting games demand an arcade joystick, but Soul Calibur is the direct opposite. Soul Calibur uses a unique fighting control style, with the new 8-way run system. You won't be dissapointed. All in all, I would give this game 10 star, though the maximum is 5. This game will give you thrills of fun, and won't get bored soon.

NOT a button masher's dream

This game not only looks nice, but has great, deep gameplay. To those complaining that the AI is too easy, well all fighting games are meant to be played between two humans. So the game should not be judged on the difficulty of its AI.

As for button mashers, a good player should be able to easily beat a button masher. Here's a tip for starters: parry. Since you know the constant moves are always coming, you push back and block at the same time the move comes, and you'll push your opponent to the side, where you can do whatever you want. Since they're a button masher, they won't know that you can counter parry, so it's safe to do whatever and kill them.

Learn the system. Beat the mashers. Have fun.

One of the best fighters ever made, actually quite possible the best fighter ever made thus far. Graphics far superior to Tekken or Dead or Alive 2, this game rocks. There is so much to do, you unlock all kinds of good stuff by fighting like galleries of art new costumes, and levels to fight on and more. This game has great strategy in it as well as it is not like Marvel vs Capcom where you just push buttons and pull off random power moves. This game is exceptional and I own it since the Dreamcast debut!

Don't have a Dreamcast? Go buy one and then buy this game!

Like fighting games and can't wait until August 26, 2003 (the release date of Soul Calibur II on the three major consoles)? Go out and buy a refurbished Dreamcast for $ or so and then buy Soul Calibur. If you already have a Dreamcast then there's no reason not to already own this game. Believe the hype, the game is every bit as good as they say. The only other game system I own is the PS2, but I'm tempted to go and buy the Xbox and the Gamecube just so I can own the different versions of Soul Calibur II, I love this game so much. The graphics were way ahead of their time when the game was launched on the Dreamcast on 9/9/99, and they're still state of the art. GMR magazine recently stated that Soul Calibur still looks better than 75% of Xbox games today, and I'm inclined to agree. It's a beautiful game with even more phenomenal gameplay. What else can I say? It's a must have, pure and simple.

Goodbye, PlayStation2

I had never seen or used a Dreamcast before my uncle brought his for me to try, and frankly, Sega was pretty low in my opinion after Saturn. I played the DC Sonic game, and it was OK, nothing special. Then I popped in Soul Caliber. Wow. Instantly, I had abandoned the notion of waiting for PS2 and was determined to get a Dreamcast. Soul Caliber is the most fun game I have ever played. I expected just another dumb fighting game, but I was blown away by the stunning graphics, sounds, and gameplay. I also discovered an aspect of the game that I find hilarious even after playing the game for hours and hours. After you knock the other person out, you can continue to beat their unconscious body. While this may sound morbid, and some anti-violence nuts are going to have a cow, I think this is incredibly funny. Besides, unlike some games, there is no blood and no killing. You knock the other guy unconscious, or you knock him off of the platform. If any of you are thnking of NOT buying Dreamcast, play Soul Caliber first. You will instantly abandon any notions about PS2 or Nintendo's mysterious new system.

Dreamcast is the Heart, this is the Soul

Ever since Street Fighter ignited the golden age of fighting games, the genre has been seen in many shapes and forms. After 2D fighting games began to become less interesting, Sega showcases Virtua Fighter, a polygonal beat-em-up. Namco then took Virtua Fighter to it's advantage and created the Tekken series. While the 32-bit war of the fighters went on, Rare's Killer Instinct made use of the SNES with ACM graphics. Weapon-based fighting games soon evolved in 3D standard, made possible by Soul Blade and Bushido Blade. Now comes Soul Calibur, a more "disciplined" fighter than anything so far. Gone are the days of memorizing and linking chains of combos (namely Killer Instinct and Soul Blade). Each character has a load of 20-plus moves at your disposal. You can execute any move in any order. This allows the player to create any combo without heavy memorization, which makes it a hell of a lot of fun. When it comes to graphics, nothing on any console, PC, or arcade can compare. Gone are the polygons and jaggies from the arcade version, and even though it moves at 60fps, it seems faster. As of now, this is the best fighting game on the market and is the best since Street Fighter 2 for the SNES. If there were any reason to get a Dreamcast, this would be it. Soul Calibur's the kind of game you'll still be playing afer its released and it ranks among the greatest games (alongside Zelda: Ocarina of Time and Mario 64). You can now forget about Tekken 3, and don't even think about Virtua Fighter 3tb- Soul Calibur finally arrives on Dreamcast.

Promlems in Soul Calibur are Few and Far Between, Buy It.

First, lets get one thing straight, Soul Calibur is easily the best 3D fighting game to date. The graphics are proably the best ever, the sound is great, lots of different play modes, but the gameplay is where this game has problems. The problem with the gameplay is this, the Soul Calibur fighting system rewards people for not knowing what on earth they're doing. In the vs. mode is 2 people are playing, one a pretty good or even expert gamer, and the other a novice gamer, odds are the novice is gonna win. While the good gamer tries to pull off combos and super-moves the novice will sit there and whack all the buttons as hard as they can not knowing what on earth they're trying to do. Although this is really annoying there's a way to stop it. Block. Since the novice wont do anything but weak attacks this will hold them off pretty much as long as you want.

With this being only a minor flaw I'll give SC a 4. If the rating system were out of 10 I would give it a 9 so keep that in mind when reading this review. So, the final queston, should you buy it. Yes. Although SC has its problems they only come few and far between still making the a classic game. SC will be known and praised as a revolutionary 3D fighting game long after the new millenium.

Most important aspect of any game is gameplay

2 Rating: 2, Useful: 12 / 35

This game has stunning graphics, good load time, and tons of extras. So why do I give it only 2 stars? Because the gameplay is seriously flawed. Like Namco's Tekken, SC can be played by newbies who get lucky with button bashing. This means that serious gamers who invest the time to master moves are simply not rewarded for perfection in timing and skillful execution. Secondly, the balance of defense and offense is off. A person could go wild on offense and the veteran who tries to defend will have a tough time countering and reversing. A truly balanced fighting system would reward skilled players who can predict the opponent's attacks and react accordingly. There is another fighting game with much deeper gameplay (but less flash to it) and that is Sega's Virtua Fighter 3tb.

On the plus side: 1) OUTSTANDING graphics and animation. 2) Excellent sound effects. 3) Beautifully fluid and very addictive gameplay. 4) Easy to pick up and play the first time, but difficult to master, especially at the harder levels.

On the minus side: 1) Repetitave, commentary by the narrator and characters, to the point of being annoying. 2) Inability to silence same while retaining music and sound effects.

Other than the commentary, the game is as close to perfect as something manmade can be. Fix that, and I'd have given it 5 stars (should be about 4.75 stars, but Amazon.com won't let us rate it that way). I've noticed people who don't even like video games, getting a real kick out of playing this one.

It is a great way to get out your frustrations.

If you are not willing to pay the [cash] for this game, you probably shouldn't own the Sega Dreamcast. It's a bargain, and is the best fighting game I have ever seen/played in my 20 years of playing video games.
