As a 20 year veteran and designer of games, I would not be the first to jump up and purchase Soul Caliber because its "just another fight game". However, Soul Caliber is far more than that, I was totally surprised with this game and in a nutshell:

Soul Caliber demonstrates all the power that is Dreamcast. The graphics are visually stunning, the game play compelling (even for a fight game hater as myself) and the options are beyond any I have seen in the market place.

Soul Caliber is one of those things that has to be experienced to appreciate it. Not only does the game show you the "secret" moves and how to press the buttons to get things right, but has missions that you can perform and fighting subtleties that you don't notice until after you have played the game a few times.

Each character has a wide range of moves at their disposal and each character demonstrates their own personality in different ways. Everything from Voldo's snake like moves to Rock's headbutting attacks - this game is definately a must buy. Even if its just to watch Ivy tossing her hair out of her face after a angled grin. This is the first fighting game I have ever seen where the characters blink and move their mouths when they talk.

Since I hate fight games in general, I am assuming that fight game lovers will rush to pick up a copy of Soul Caliber.

soul caliber is a beautiful game with incredible control, graphics and game play, when you first play the game its easy to mistake if for button masher but if you take the time to master the moves and understand the controls (witch isn't that hard to do) this game will do things you never thought possible in a fighter. if you buy one game for the dreamcast soul caliber is the only choice!

The Best Fighting Game Ever... Deserves a 6th Star

Soul Calibur is the Best Fighting Game ever Created. It is even BETTER than then the arcade version. Every character is PERFECTLY finished right down to the last detail. They move and look increadibly realistic. Their weapons and moves put a whole new edge on fighting games, but an edge than any other game on any other system will have a hard time matching. Even those that don't like fighting games will be hooked by Soul Calibur

If you own a Dreacmast go and rent this game so you can be reassured that this truly is the best fighting game ever created, and then go and buy it and own the greatness that is Soul Calibur.

The only one with a negative?

I guess i'm the only one with some cons to this game. Well here goes. It is a good game, the graphics are superb, there are tons of modes, there are millions of extra features, blah blah blah... But wait a sec, there IS something wrong with the game. Once you take away all the graphics, features, sounds, once you strip this game to the bone, what do you have? a mediocre fighting game. You must think i'm crazy, i'm not. The game just isn't that fun whe it comes down to just fighting. They have masked that with all the modes however. I mean, i'm not saying its a bad game, but I would say it does not compare to teken 3 for the PSX. That game is extremely well designed, with the counters, the moves, sure it doesn't have all that jazz, but its good what really counts in a fighting game, good fights. An example for Soul Calibur: I put the dificulty on the hardest level, and selected Mitsurugi (the sowrd guy). i used ONE move, thats right, just ONE MOVE throught the whole game, and I beat it, without losing once. Just one move and I can beat the game on the hardest dificulty? I'm not saying its a bad game, again. Everyone who plays it will think its the best game ever due to its graphics, sound, and all that. Hell most people even think the fights are spectacular. There are millions of moves to learn to boot, however, you only need one or two that you just keep using, and you'll win. I also tryed 1on1ing a friend in this game. He being a button masher, and I being one to try to learn new moves and all.. he beat me every time we played. he also beat every mission he played just button mashing. Oh well, It's just a game. If I were to recomend a game to buy, I would have to say this one, just due to the fact that EVERYONE has to have it. however if you're looking for a better game, that is better all around, get one of the xxx2K's, or crazy taxi.

A few notes on this game...

This isn't a review (there's plenty of those available) for Soul Calibur, but moreso a few notes of correction and additions that i'd like to add to previous reviews.

First of all, pretty much everything that's been said graphically about the game is true, except the backgrounds are mostly 2D with a few 3D elements. Yoshimitsu's stage is about the only one which i know is fully 3D. Others used 2D elements which moved so that they looked like they had depth.

Sound-wise, it's all instrumental, but i feel that most tracks are very fitting and all are well-composed. While i'm a little disappointed to see that Khan didn't provide any of his remixes like in Soul Edge on Playstation, their presence isn't too sorely missed.

Concerning more experienced players playing against button-mashers, it really comes down to the skill of the more experienced player. Fighting against a button masher can be tricky in any fighter, though Namco's games do seem to be a bit more prone to it than Sega's VF series, for instance. Anyways, one thimg that a button-masher will do is likely attack high 75%-90% of the time, unless you break that pattern or they see that you're blocking their attacks. Anticipate this and be ready to react with a high guard or guard impact.

Versus characters with a large weapon like Astaroth, you can either use the 8-way run, guard impact, or just plain guard against some attacks. Those with shorter weapons like Maxi, need to be dealt with in close, which means fights tend to a be a lot less safe (than the distance fighting some will play with Astaroth or Sigfriend), but it also gives you more chances to time those guards and guard impacts. Note that 8-way runs are less effective for attack evasion due to the fact that the quicker characters will realign themselves faster (unless stick in a combo; newbie Maxi characters are good for that).

The basic canned combos (the combos that each character does when you press an attack button thrice for instance) become obvious to spot after a while. If you don't know how to guard against each attack in the combo, go into Practice Mode and play the character that you often fight against (or play them all) and do what your human opponents will do. The attack data conveniently displays where the hits land.

Overall, SC is an excellent game, if not a tad bit disappointing in a few less-than-important ways (sound selection, Tekken 2-style character clones). Definitely a worty purchase for anyone who likes fighters. i'd even recommend this for those who aren't totally into fighters since it's detailed graphics and incredible style creates an interest that transcends gaming genres. Now if only Namco would announce a Tekken or Ridge Racer game for DC.

This game has it all. Hundreds of moves, tons of different weapons, INSANE graphics, many different modes, and hours of fine holiday fun. I can't believe how great this game is. I got it a couple of days ago and it is my favorite game ever. It's going to be hard to top this one. Buy this game and you won't be sorry, I promise.

They should just raise the Dreamcast price and include thisgame. This game will have near 100% adoption rate by Dreamcastowners.

Everything you've heard is true. It must be seen to be believed. I was mesmorized as I started the game.

On one particular arena, it is snowing lightly and you can see the "steam" coming out of the fighters' mouths from the cold. Amazing. The entire game looks like a cut-scene.

Parents: there is combat, and it is fierce at that. But this is not "bloody" combat as in Mortal Kombat, etc. The game takes place on the fantasy level. The fighters though exceptionally well done are still very cartoonish, and only the youngest of players would be disturbed. Don't make your teen miss the best game on the Dreamcast. There's really nothing to worry about. END

Simply put..... AMAZING! Deserves about 20 stars!

Soul Calibur is THE BEST game for dreamcast. It has the best graphics and best gameplay. The game can be easy on the lowest setting of difficulty. I won most of my matches with one or two moves. But on the highest setting of difficulty, it becomes very challenging. If you are going to buy one game for the dreamcast, make it SOUL CLAIBUR.

THE BEST OF THE BEST!

Soul Caliber is the best game for the dreamcast. If you are looking for a dreamcast game then this is it. Soul Caliber gives the best graphics (in one of the cold stages you can actually see the people breathing!), execelent secrets (you even get a mode where you can customize the opening FMV! ), and a wide viarity of characters (each of them look amazing). The backgrounds are so detailed that it seems real (and I mean the REAL THING)! If you aren't a fighting gamer then you'll still love it! The mission battle mode will change your perspective on fighting games. It really raised my standard of a fighting game. The only thing I though that was stupid was the endings. They were only a bunch of pictures. Overall this game is a must have for the Dreamcast! So don't just sit there.... BUY IT!
