Quite possibly the best game put out by Sega for its Dreamcast console. The graphics on this game are amazing. Years after its release it is still putting some games to shame. Buy a copy. Soon.

This is just as good as Soul Calibur 2 and its a wonder how Dreamcast died with so many amazing games this being the best along with Grandia 2, Crazy Taxi and Jet Grind Radio. Any way i highly recommend you play this or Soul Calibur 2 and be completely amazed.

In comparison to Soul Blade, this game is a towering improvement. To Soul Calibur II, it is a little behind, but then, it was released 5 years prior. This also represents a very smooth transition of storylines from the first to the second in the series.
Combat commands in the straight spectrum are highly developed, though 8-way-run attacks are limited to two or three basic attacks. Still, the game is very fun, and fun to play over and over for a long span of time. The voice-over/narrator guy is hillarious also.
This game's museum mode has 335 pieces of unlockable artwork and different skins and modes, as well as more than 10 unlockable characters. The first set of museum pieces completely explains the Soul storyline, and the events that lead up to where the game is; something you have to nit-pick through in SCII to figure out just what happened since this installment. For Dreamcast collectors, or fighting game enthusiests, I highly-reccomend this game.
Welcome back to the stage of history

Soul Caliber - Circa 2001
GOOD:
- Good/Tight controls
- Nicely balanced gameplay
- Lots of different and unique fighters
- Minutes to learn years to master gameplay
- Some nice unlockables like new Fighters, costumes, stages and other bonuses
- A 3D fighting game that really uses the 3D space (with eight way run)
- Considered a classic to many hardcore fighting fanatics
BAD:
- Non- traditional fighting gameplay, might alienate some more traditional fighting game fans
- Have to unlock most of the game through the story/quest mode
IF IT FITS YOUR TASTE:
- Has medieval theme, both European and Chinese/Japanese
- Not traditional fighting game in the sense that there is no real combos and supers, or even projectile moves
- Game has built in quest mode, where you pick a fighter and complete a number of challenges, the end result is you unlock more content and are a better player
- Fight with weapons, like a 3D Samurai Showdown
GAME ITS MOST ASSOCATED TOO:
- Soul Caliber 2
- Tekken 3
- Samurai Showdown
ADDITIONAL NOTES:
- You can unlock a mode that lets you Customize your intro (by picking who will be in the intro of the game at which points)
Still fun after all these years

Soul Calibur is the classic version of the arcade game, and is only available on the Dreamcast. For many, it's the main reason to buy a Dreamcast!
You get a nice selection of characters, both male and female, young and old. If there's a complaint about the characters, it's that the females tend to have VERY skimpy outfits that mostly show off jiggly breasts and lots of underwear. The guys tend to have fully covered bodies. Something's not quite even here.
There are a number of modes, between simple arcade mode, one on one combat, training demos, and more. As you play through the game you earn points, which let you unlock more secrets. It encourages you to go through the game as each character, learning their best moves and techniques. Each character has his or her own favorite weapons and combat style.
As with all fighting games, you have to get used to the violence. The characters are bashing each other with some rather nasty moves - and it doesn't necessarily stop when one person is defeated. I've seen my character kicked to the ground, the game announce my defeat, and then the enemy throw in a final, gratuitous kick. It's very discouraging.
The different levels are fun, with their atmosphere and backgrounds. The music is on the generic side and doesn't go themed with the world you're in, as more modern fighters tend to do. Also it is sometimes fairly easy to simply knock your opponent out of the ring and be done with it.
Also, on the sounds angle, there are only a limited number of things that the announcer says. So if you play a given character through an 8 round series of fights, you are going to hear the same thing over and over again.
That all being said, this is a true classic of a game and many people have become quite fond of the sequels. So if you're into inexpensive fighters, or if you're a Soul Calibur fan who wants to see where it all began, this is a must have!
OH MY GOD ! ! !

Take my word for this: You have no idea how good this game is. You might think you do, but trust me, you're wrong. It's much, much better. Graphically the most beautiful thing I've ever seen, the game plays well too. I've always had a problem with 3D fighting games, the control didn't make sense to me. But Soul Calibur's control is amazing, it just makes sense. You can almost feel your way through the fight. The computer is a bit easy to beat, but this is a minor flaw. If you buy only one Dreamcast game, make this it!
One of the greatest games Ive ever played

Ive been playing this game for almost a month now, and it just keeps getting better. Soul Caliber has made fighting games fun again for me. The graphics and animation has the best I've seen, but a lot has been said about that already. Also, there are numerous hidden items and characters in the game, which are great incentives to keep playing. It's also a great party game, since new players can usually pick up the game within seconds. This game alone justifies buying a dreamcast.

Soul Caliber is the greatest fighting game I have ever played. I love the way each character is mastered in their own weapon. The extra modes available make it more than a normal fighting game. I personnally don't really like fighting games, but when I played this in the arcade it blew me away. The only reason I didn't give this game 5 stars was because the game gets a bit repetetive after you have gotten all characters and have beaten the mission mode.

If you are trying to decide whether or not to purchase this game, I'd suggest that you do. You obviously have an interest in high-quality games because you purchased a Dreamcast system. To date (10/4/99), I believe SC is the best game for the Dreamcast. I'm not even a "fighter" fan and I enjoy the ease at which you can begin enjoying the game. As you learn more about each fighter and their moves, the game allows your skills to increase to mind-boggling complexities. I haven't been this addicted since Pac-Man. The "exhibition mode" makes for a great screen saver too! ;)
