I'm a major D&D fan and as a DM I would say this is the best D&D style game I have ever played. I've played Baldur's Gate and Dungeon Siege and Neverwinter blows them all away. I also think the graphics on Neverwinter are outstanding. It's a must for D&D players and others who love RPG's.
D&D lives on in NWN!!

I have been a D&D gamer since 1978 and I have never had as much fun on a computer-based D&D style game as I had with this. The graphics are awesome and the gameplay preserves much for the roleplay/D&D flavor that I loved even back then.

Neverwinter Nights is a good game, fun out of the box. It requires a modicum of logic, quick decisions, and some arcade skills. This isn't what makes the game great though.
The Aurora toolset allows content to be created by anyone who wants to. Modules created by the people for the people for no additional cost, ranging in quality from very poor to transcedant. Remember a D&D module that you played when you were 15? Chances are that there is a NWN adaptation. If not, you can build it yourself!
Included in this EULA for this package is an internet ready multi-player server (free Linux version downloadable). With this, one can host a group of players, allowing a DM to watch over them much as in the tabletop game. It also allows for a persistent world. These PW's range from player v. player combat (ex. Contest of Champions) to persistent worlds where role-playing is the priority (ex. The Borderlands).
This game has a myriad of content that keep it fresh long after the included module has been completed. I read a review that said this game is easy to finish, but the real game starts when you complete the included module and move into the online world.

This game stays very true to the Dungeons and Dragons spirit. From an interesting single player to a limitless multiplayer, this game will keep you interested for a long time. Although the ending was not what I hoped it would be, I would still buy this game.
The Aurora Tool Set allows you to create your own worlds with custom quests. The scripting languages allows for almost limitless ideas to be implimented.
A DM mode is also included so you can DM a game for you and some friends over the internet or on a network.
A multiplayer revolution... but takes some work

First off, I must admit that I share the views of those who are critical of the included campaign, and I also find most of the "public servers" that one connnects to via the included GameSpy browser to be widely variable in terms of quality. There are legions of poor roleplayers, "munchkin" players (i.e. folks who are interested only in increasing the power of their characters, whether or not they have to play by the rules to get it), and "griefers" (i.e. folks who deliberately try to ruin the gaming experience for others).
So how can I justify giving this game 5 stars?
Simply put, if you can manage to play the game as it was intended, in multiplayer with a small group of friends, the experience is simply fantastic. Via a site called Neverwinter Connections, which is a matching service for setting up games, I have been happily playing custom NWN campaigns (created entirely through the included Aurora Toolset) for almost a year now, since the game came out. NWC allows you to find like-minded people to play regular games with (some of my players have been with me since last July). The hak system, which allows you to add custom content, is cumbersome and not without its faults, but allows an incredible amount of new content to be added to the game (just check out what's available now at Neverwinter Vault: literally thousands of user-created modules and custom content downloads).
Most of the criticisms of the game (and I've read many) expect things from NWN that it is not. This isn't a Baldur's Gate style of game, nor is it Everquest. The single-player component is limited and dependent largely on the quality of the module you've downloaded (as the included "official" campaign is seriously flawed). But for people who want the style of the old tabletop D&D game, this is the closest we've gotten in the computer format.
Great play but not hassle free...

Neverwinter Nights is a great Dungeons & Dragons RPG that blends the 3rd Edition D&D rules and great storyline with some plot twists and certianly a great set-up for future sequels. The downside is periodic crashing (especially with wireless ethernet cards), slow transitions between map sections, saving/loading, etc., and having only one henchmen at a time. However overall it is very playable with many hours of enjoyment to be had.
Single-player is only part of the fun...

Basically, if you're reading this, you're either already set on buying NWN, or you're actually looking for helpful suggestions. Now, I don't have any of the competitor's games in this field, so I can't make comparisons. However, I can tell you a bit about my problems and triumphs.
I never encounter very many freezes. A few happen when switching between different types of armor (i.e, from chain to leather, etc.) after long periods of play, or when I've Alt-Tabbed or been forced out of fullscreen by another program. Occasionally these freezes are bad enough to warrant a full restart, but not often.
The storyline is deep and involving, if predictable at times. I won't spoil anything for you, but there is at least one story point that will have you going, "I KNEW he wasn't to be trusted!"
Gameplay is simple point-and-click, with a few more clicks involved if you're a spellcaster or have certain feats.
As the title says, single-player is nice, but the real meat of the game lies in fan-created modules and online play. If you look around, you can find campaigns and worlds to fit nearly every need. There are a number of builders out there working on translating your favorite PnP adventures into NWN. There's already several versions of Keep on the Borderlands out there, and at least one module of Pools of Radiance. However, Caveat Emptor is the order of the day, since there are quite a lot of incredibly ... modules out there as well.
In a nutshell, my advice is this: Buy it for the single-player, keep it for the multi-player.

I couldn't even begin to tell you what the rules of D&D are, let alone what hit points or how important consitution is to a character. My boyfriend actually has me hooked on this game, and I have to confess I really like it. My only points of concern are the henchman/sidekicks you get. You have very little control over them, as compared to "Dungeone Siege". "Neverwinter Nights" is a very wordy game. You need to talk to a variety of people in the game to ascertain what your next quest is etc. Its a very exciting game that you can truly play for hours on end, or until your neck is so stuff you need to get up and move around.
Stop whining, this is a great game!

It may not have everything that D&D had, but it's pretty [darn] close, and you don't have to leave home to do it: NWN is a ton of fun. I've spent the past six months working my way through the original campaign. It has been a blast. New modules continue to come on line, including a new series developed by Bioware themselves that promises to be darker and more role-playing oriented than the original campaign. The camera angle thing is annoying more than anything else. One never sees the world as your character sees it, but one works around that limitation fairly easily. It's easy to get swallowed up by the game--time flies by very quickly.
