Finally. A game that matches the hype!

For a game that's been hyped for over 2 years, I expected to be disappointed again, as with most other overly hyped software. I am glad to report that this time, the product lived up to the hype.

This is to date, the BEST implementation of an role playing game.

The game designers pretty much thought of everything and were fairly true to the precepts of the paper and pen game(DnD) -- better than most of the haphazard and incomplete DnD games most people play. I do have some minor quibbles (mostly with the AI -- exactly why do the henchmen always have a suicidal bent? Greater control of henchmen would have been nice.) and I suspect we all will, but they pale beside the splendid accomplishment that this game represents.

I don't want to spoil the game for anyone by including details -- if you want them go to Bioware's website. What I will say is that the game is very engrossing -- I am writing this review after being up 48 hours straight over the weekend of the release. As a result, I have a rogue character whose feats of nefarious derring do has earned him abilities, skills, equipment and treasure, that can take on All Comers...hiding in shadows, behind the big half orc barbarian of course.

I highly recommend this game for anyone who is a fan of fantasy role playing games. In fact everyone should give this one a try. If you don't like this game, you don't like role playing games. Lastly, playing online is free with purchase of the game -- see you there for the dragon slaying expedition.

A bit boring after awhile

I guess I am getting a bit jaded with hack and slash games. While each one comes up with its own new twist (this game's would either be the die rolling window, or the World Builder), the basic thrust of the game is walk into a room, hack up creatures, get some healing and run away when the going gets tough. This game is no exception.

The graphics, overall, are pretty nice. I personally like some of the effects in Dungeon Siege better, but there are some neat effects here. I have found some annoying habits, however. Occasionally, the floors draw out in yellow or red rather than in the proper texture. At first, I thought I was seeing traps, or the like, but it happened in a safe area. Either way, it is annoying. I have also noticed occasional lag.

On install, the game warned me that my P4 2.26 machine (with GF4 card and 1GB RAM) was not up to specs, and my game might suffer. While the specs are high, they are not this high.

Most of the quests in this game are easily solvable. Find a locked door? Look for a key or another method to trip the lock (lever, et al). Unable to get through to an NPC? Talk to everyone you meet until you get the gem of knowledge you need. Overall, there are no real puzzles to challenge, which makes the game lose its luster rather quickly.

The game is not bad in multi-player mode, but you need someone who has either created, or downloaded, a decent module. Unlike Diablo, which randomly spawned, or Dungeon Siege, which had a separate multi-plyaer world, or even Elder Scrolls III, which truly adapts to your play, you rely on the ingenuity of others to get past the mundane.

I wish this game had a better adaptive engine, like Elder Scrolls, or a more free flowing play, like Dungeon Siege, which does not stop to load new areas (very neat effect).

On the plus side, the game is easy to adapt to. You will learn the controls rather quickly and find that you are an "expert" before you even finish the training academy (nice learning feature, but unnecessary for most who play these types of games).

The biggest gem in the package is the World Builder. Too bad I do not have the time, as I would love to take all of my old TSR and Judge's Guild modules and adopt them for play in this game.

If you like to hack and slash, you will get a lot of fun out of this game. It is fairly straight forward, like previous D&D games, with the added bonus of being able to easily change angles.

Bland singleplayer and a community that may never develop

The single player campaign was horrible.

The graphics are very dated. The engine seems fine but the poly count and texture are are abismal. All the texture art looks the same.

Everyone claims the multiplayer community will save this game. It's been months and it hasn't yet. 95 out of 100 user made modules are total garbage and 99% of one-off Gamespy multiplayer games are no fun at all.

The toolset is weak and the scripting language is arcane.

Skip this title at all costs

i have played this game and there are many things to be said for and against it. it has a great look and feel. when things are running smoothly they are beautiful. but the game stutteres alot, especially at animations. the sound quality could be a bit better, and there are a lot of other bugs that are both major and small but really annoying.
the game itself is very fun, the storyline well thought of. the character have a life all to themselves.
the graphics are very well done. in game play it is good that you get to zoom in and out to get better angles of the battle. with the character looking so much larger it is better to see them.
still over all i would have to say that baldurs gate 2 is the better game. not just with having more than 1 character in your group. it runs smoother and i love the storyline it has. i recommend either just staying with the baldurs gate series or taking this game with a grain of salt.

Game is beautiful! Does n't work with old Video cards !!!

I bought this tempting game yeserday and installed on my desktop with 3dfxVoodo5.5 video card. Even after applying new patch, my initial screen was blank and mouse disappeared. It seems like lot of Installation/Configuration problems with lot of people who are trying desparately to run NWN successfully.

As far as I guess, NWN WORKS WITH NVIDIA and ATI Radeon Card only.. Got to take RISK or replace with one of these supported ones(Costs [some more] bucks).

Well, Other than installation problems.. NWN is FANATASTIC.....

TRY ON YOUR OWN RISK

Just another hack n' slash game basically

I'm going to keep this short. Yes, Neverwinter Nights features the 3rd Edition D&D rules, it's got a great multiplayer and it comes with an awesome construction kit, however, in the end Neverwinter Nights, despite all the features, is still just a hack n' slash "adventure" game that plays more like an all out action title similiar to Diablo. In terms of single player, it can't compare to the likes of Baldurs Gate 2: Shadows of Amn. But as for the multiplayer, it's definently fun to get with a lot of people and hack up enemies together. But while the multiplayer can be quite fun, the game just doesn't have that D&D feel and it comes off more like a souped up Dungeon Siege. If your looking for a game similiar to Diablo, Dungeon Siege (etc), than look no further, because Neverwiner Nights is probably the best in it's class. It's absolutely huge and definently has a lot of multiplayer value. Just don't expect another Baldurs Gate.

Multiplayer game

If you haven't been following the development of this game and are expecting Balders Gate 3, you will be mistaken. If you like to play single player, you will be disappointed. You can bring only one other companion on the single player quest. There is no deep plot development and no interaction with your companions. On the other hand, players will be able to make their own modules, so you may be able to download a gem in the future or write your own if you are ambitious enough.
If you like multiplayer and are willing to wade through the online mediocrity to find a decent bunch of fellow gamers, you will be pleasantly surprised. This is the strength of this game and it does it better than anything out there for the moment.
The graphics are good and it is an excellent translation of 3rd edition D&D for the CRT, if that is any concern.

So far so Good. I like it.

Well, I am not a groveling fanboy. In fact I hate the 3E rules for D&D, but putting that aside, this is a Darn good game.

I've spent most of the time playing with the Module creator tools, and although they are not complete they are chock full of good stuff. Lots of people have complained about the toolset, but really, this is the first stab at doing this, and it really is amazing what they came up with so far. I am sure they will come out with expansions with even more tilesets and monsters for the building tool. You can't customize wall color for instance, but what you can do is really cool, amazing, and quite easy! Download the free kit and check it out.

The scripting is the most confusing part of module customization. It is based on the C language and in the way they implemented it is not very intuitive. This is the only reason I did not give this game a 5 star rating. I have found lots of online resources to help me with scripting so far, so things are looking up. (BTW the World Builder's Guide is not very helpful with learning scripting.)

The general tools for throwing together a quick hack and slash are quite easy to use and awesome. There are simple wizards for every major thing you may want to do. (Even the confusing scripting which the wizard is not very helpful with if you don't understand some programming concepts.) I really think that the module creator alone is worth the price of this game.

Single player is a little Hack and Slash, but Multiplayer works pretty good, and is a lot more fun, especially in no PVP/Team mode. I run the game on a P3 600 with a Radeon 7500 and a cable modem, and I've had no problems really. I haven't tried the running with players and a DM yet. I hear it's pretty good.

All in all I like it! Give me expansion packs!!!

P.S.: I never buy a game before it drops to the [price] range. This is one exception I am very glad I made!

The graphics in NWN are an astounding achievement in depth, richness, detail and beauty.

Secondly, if the NPC voices are so annoying, don't hire an NPC. Its easier to level up without one anyways.

Thirdly, the game has a STORYLINE because that's what a good D&D adventure has. A gamemaster has to create a story using a script of sorts, or else he is ill-prepared to meet the player's needs. Too much improvisation leads to boring game play.

Been playing for 2 1/2 years

I've been building my persistent module for NWN for 2 1/2 years now and the game is as popular ever. We have 3 shards in the USA and fill up 60 players slots at one time. This game has continued beyond normal game lifetimes and shows no singes of slowing up. I have had players playing on the module this entire time.. up to 8 hours a day and 100+ characters! NWN is truly the future of gaming!
