This thing has a LOT of things wrong with it. If you are expecting another Final Fantasy 7, Baldur's Gate, or EverQuest then this is going to let you down. I have a couple of reasons.
1. Crashes, it crashes more often then a car during a crash test.
2. The game is EXTREAMLY complicated.
3. The camera hovers above your character at all times, you can zoom in and zoom out (to an extent) but you can't see everything that's going on. It would have been much better if they had made it in first-person mode like in EverQuest.
4. This is just my opinion but they characters all dress in ugly middle-ages Spanish clothing.
5. In multiplayer you have two options, you can either play in a confusing multiplayer version of the 1 player game or you can play in a [cruddy] player-made dungeon which was probably cleared out by the time you enter or the creator hasn't finished adding NPC's.
6. The battle system is confusing. Someone starts attacking something and you try to help and you end up rushing against a wall or post which you can't seem to get around until the battle is over.
7. They actualy made it possible to allow the dungeon master to keep people from entering a game with a character they used in other games, or a 'local character' and insted you hae to make a brand new character or select a character the game made for you.
8. The lag in multiplayer. This isn't EQ or DAoC lag this is online first-person shooter lag. The monsters can still attack you and you can't do anything about it.
9. If someone in your party does something evil then, guess what? YOU get your alliance tilted towards evil too!
I suggest getting WarCraft 3 if you wanted to buy one of the the games nominated for game of the year, or even buying an old one like EverQuest. My opinion would be to pick two of the following: EverQuest, Aliens versus Predator 2, Diablo 2, StarCraft, WarCraft 3, or Dark Age of Camelot and play them until Star Wars Galaxies comes out.
Combat is the biggest downfall...

While the game should be extremely righteous in all aspects, it will have one major downfall... real time combat.
Unlike the other D&D titles this company produced (Baldur's gate, Icewind Dale...) the player is not able to pause the game during combat and issue commands during multiplayer games (dunno about single player games...). The only person who can do this is the DM. I expect latency and lag to be an issue with combat as a result of this in online games. If they would follow in the footsteps of other RTS's such as fallout tactics or pool of radiance and have a turn-based combat option, the game be perfect.
I have played the beta edition....

This is a very good game to play, take it from me I have played the beta edition, I was one of the lucky ones to be able to get the beta to test it. It is a must have and I will be getting it the day it comes out maybe even before it comes out. Trust me this is something for all the great role players ;)
One of the best deliverables in a long time.

Neverwinter Nights is one of the best packaged and delivered games in a long time in a genre that has needed it. I am glad Bioware stepped up to the plate and created a great multiplayer game unlike the earlier Baldur's Gate attempts.
If this becomes popular in the community it will be around for many years! Great game!
major bugs, lousy support

Throughout the game, it will randomly crash. No error messages, nothing. Just all of the sudden, you're staring at your desktop. The game did this on my computer, my father's computer (which had all different components, even the ridiculously expensive video card they recommend for it-which, by the way, the game is totally geared for...can't even see the faces of the characters unless you have that video card), and on other people's systems (I chatted with a few other disgruntled players online). When I complained to the company about the crashing, they told me it was my system. That I needed newer drivers, needed to reinstall, etc. Basically, any excuse they could think of to say it wasn't a bug in the software. I've done everything they suggested and they're still emailing me back with excuses. I've been going back and forth with their support for over a month now. Even after I installed the latest drivers, they keep telling me I need newer drivers. How could my drivers be the problem when two different computers have the same problem?
The game play doesn't even follow D&D 3rd edition rules. If you try to play neutral, they force you to be either evil or good. They count lawful things (i.e taking money to enforce the law) as good only. A good character would not take money for enforcing the law or saving the damsel in distress. They also have a strange definition of cross-skills. ONLY a rogue can disable traps. ONLY a mage can cast spells. You have to multi-class to do anything. The official D&D rules say you only get the skills at half strength if it's not your class, but hey, at least you have the option.
Overall, by the time you get halfway through the game, you're bored anyway. Almost every scene has a trap or a locked door in it...it gets very old, since most characters (other than a rogue) cannot disable traps or unlock doors, even with a lock pick.
I regret buying the game-it was a waste of money. I have gone back to playing D&D on paper.
A great game but most, miss the point of it...

I bought this game and i will say it isone of the best games i have ever played. I think most people who play this game miss the point. the one player adventure was not written to be the greatest one player adventure, no it was written to show you what you could do if you wanted to.
That's the simple truth, You can recreate every place in the adventure. Plus there is something that you get even though they don't say it anywhere else, they do give you new stuff to use by going on line to website... secret doors, portraits. these are all things that you can get. now it is true that one player story is not the best i have ever played, but it was not suppose to be. This game is really about the toolset that they give you. It is incredible, after you beat the game you can go in and look at everything they have done. some people say it difficult to use, but if you know how to cut and paste you can make some good adventures. I know i love making them. Granted i am still learning but you down load tutorials from the net. They are very easy and well done.
You can also create your own monsters and variations of creatures. you want a chicken that can shoot fireballs you can have it! (THAT'S MY TRADEMARK)
Most people who are having problems with this game are using stolen software, or so i have heard on the net.
overall if you like playing d&d get this game.
if you like being creative, get this game.
It is more usable for the internet friendly
SIMPLY THE BEST GAME I HAVE PLAYED .
Fantastic RPG!

I like this game so much, I'm getting a second copy so I can play it with my wife! The game is excellent, and the toolset is very nice. I predict an ever increasing number of fan made modules downloadable from the net, ensuring fun for years to come. I highly recomend it to anyone who enjoys role playing games. Unlike most modern multiplayer crpgs, there is NO MONTHLY FEE to pay to a service provider.
Greatest rpg yet

Neverwinter Nights is basically the wet dream of every pnp rpg geek out there. Good graphics, great implementation of the 3rd ad&d edition rules, long, complex storyline.
The multiplayer side of this game is simply amazing. Included is the Aurora Toolset which allows you to build your own world. Too bad for the relatively small areas, otherwise, hand in hand with a persistent world, this game would have turned out to be just like a free mmorpg.
Simply, this game is excellent, buy it!

I am a long-time computer game player, and Neverwinter Nights ranks as the No. 1 game I have ever played. It isn't the best graphically (Dungeon Siege wins there), or for the story line (I give the nod to Planescape Torment), but for the overall experience of gameplay over 100 hours of playing the single-player campaign ... Neverwinter Nights is the best.
Why?
Well ... it's like this. I played this game daily over 2 months, and EACH DAY, when I was finished, I found myself thinking ... "Wow, this is a really interesting point in the game. I can't wait to get started tomorrow."
This game is interesting, involving. The story line moves relentlessly through level after level, dungeons and forests, and it remains INTERESTING. That is all I can ask of a game. And Neverwinter Nights delivered. A+++++.
I played a monk, the first time I had played that class. Monks are very powerful melee fighters, and pretty much immune later in the game to poison, magic, traps, etc. Maybe that was part of the reason I like the game so much. I could solo through dungeons, not breezing through, but using strategy to achieve the goal.
The story line kept me involved. The ending was satisfying.
I have played downloaded Mods since then, and I still love the game. I have tried a druid, and a sorceress, and both are fun.
Graphically, Dungeon Siege is better. There is no doubt about that. But where Dungeon Siege became very boring late in the game, Neverwinter kept me looking forward to the next door, swinging open and ... time to rock!
