No internet connection needed

5 Rating: 5, Useful: 2 / 2

This game has been one of my favorite games since its release.

Please do not be detered by the "internet required" review as I have played this game with and without an internet connection with no problems at all.... unless you want to play the player made mods, and play online with other people... it is NOT necessary to be connected to the net if you only want to play through the single player campaigns... which, by the way combined with all the expansions is easily over 100 hours of game play.

To this day this game is one of my favorites, that I still play regularly, and I eagerly await Neverwinter Nights 2.

All about on-line

I didn't bother to finish the NWN or SoU campaigns that come with game. Perhaps I am missing out, but once I stated playing on-line, going back to playing solo was, by comparison, boring. The on-line community for NWN is outstanding and provides opportunity for all types of D&D play styles, from hack and slash to non combat roll playing, with much in-between. There are a number of creative and dedicated people who have created worlds to explore and welcome all. So whether you like or dislike the campaigns that came with the game, you are totally missing out if you haven't spent some time looking for on-line adventures. It can be totally different experience. Hey, and best of all... once you have the game, playing on-line is free.

A weak effort

If you like eye candy without substance and being told a lame story rather than writing your own, which is the true mark of an RPG, then you might like this game. I COULD suffer along with the ridiculous 3rd person view, and I could perhaps ignore the lack of ability to interact with the environment making the game a simple hack'n'slash circa 1993. However, I have an intense dislike for linear 'RPGs' that force you down a storyline with little or no flexibility or freedom to explore and have fun. In short (mainly because talking any longer about this dog is a waste of time) I thought it was a terrible gaming experience and was severely disappointed. Game ran fine, looked nice, and I disliked almost every other aspect of the effort.

too complicated?! have you ppl gone insane

True i've never played D&D before but you don't even need to pay attention to the rules....all the stupid little damage stuff at the bottom is obselete so i didn't even look at it and it was still the best rpg i've ever played. with the WIDE range of characters and the many sidequests you can do it was all fine. and i never had a single bug in this game....it never crashes and my computer is two years old. and the main quest is plenty flexible....all you have to do is put the main quest on hold and do all the sidequests...thats all i did and i beat the game with a level 15 longsword fighter. and i'm still playing the game over and over with new types of characters.

Dont be Disappointed,,Read before Buying!!!

Attention Read Before Buying!!

If you are searching for a replacement to your old button smashing RPG(Diablo 2),then this isn't the game for you.

The game's controls and graphics are weak..I was running a P4@ 2.8Ghz with ATI Radeon 9700 and the graphics were still choppy.

To even attack an enemy,it wasn't the same traditional point in the general direction of the enemy to send your charater swinging. You had to have your mouse precisely on the target to attack. And,since the game runs on D&D(Dungeons and Dragons) rules, your character doesn't just walk over and start blasting fireballs or chopping the badguy to pieces, the game has to calculate your character's stats, meaning that your character slowly swings, then win he misses(he usually does)he casually steps back. That gets very boring after a while. It take minutes just to kill one enemy.

The graphics are pathetic. I realize that NWN runs on a more 3D basis than older RPG,but the characters look choppy and blocky.

The game does have it pro's though. The toolset it just awsome, allowing you to create and control your own world. And the multiplayer expierence is awsome, but the games weak controls only become more evident.

The toolset and multiplayer is the only thing going for this game.Don't buy, hoping it's an incredible button smashing RPG to get addicted to,,,because it just isn't.

Outstanding

This is an outstanding game, with "endless" possibilities. The default music is good but most fan created music is top notch. The graphics are good, a nice 3D setting. Noting that the graphics are toned down so "everyone" can play it not just people with awesome cards. The toolset is outstanding achievement and as a person am willing to learn C++ just to use it. As for the OC it's ok, but fan created modules really stand out, such as Adam Miller's Shadowlords and Dreamcatchers. The only story that could top any of this is PlaneScape:Torment. Even now something along the lines are being implemented into NWN. As for the expansions, NWN has currently 1 expansion, a 2nd one is coming out later this year. Someone mentioned that Morrowwind has 2 expansions, Morrowwind has been out longer. And it has no Multiplayer. Neverwinter Nights does, My opinion, Buy Neverwinter Nights, you'll get more out of it. MUCH more...

Neverwinter Nights - Shadows and Hordes

I don't have Hordes yet, but let me tell you the first adventure will keep you busy for a while. This game is so much fun. I played the first adventure non-stop for hours on end. I just had to see what was going to happen next. Shadows I played differently with an hour or so of gameplay a night it was always interesting and the game evolved a lot from the original. Shadows introduces Prestige classes which are a lot of fun. I am about to finish shadows and have already pre-ordered Hordes! In addition to the NWN created expansions there are thousands of user created modules online. You can download any number install some basic stuff which is all provided on the NWN Vault website and have endless adventures. It is true that you need expansion packs to play online, but whats the big deal with that? Every person who runs an online server wants to give you the benefit of the new features in each expansion pack. Online play is limtless with servers ranging from just combat slash and grab style to full fledged role-playing worlds where people chat in character while on the server. I highly recomend this game.

Addictive gameplay

Excellent game all around. I was hesitant to buy this game due to some of the mixed reviews by gamers; I think now that perhaps one major difference from previous games--namely, party size--was simply too much for them to overcome. For me, this actually made for better gameplay, as I could then concentrate more fully on developing my own little alter ego as opposed to managing an entire squad of folks. Also, because you were only allowed one other party member, it seems the designers were forced to avoid the infamous BGII technique of offering up utterly useless NPCs, presumably in the hopes that the other party members would make up for their faults (Jaheira? Aerie? Jan?). Finally, the graphics and sounds are absolutely amazing. There were scenes in this game where I could see the water ripple after my character ran through it, where the wind blew the grass in random patterns, and where my bootsteps echoed off cave walls. Enthralling.
Cons? Too short. Seems like they've set themselves up for an expansion, maybe for more money. Who can blame them. Also, it is pretty linear, in that each section has particular things to acccomplish. Unlike truly non-linear games (Morrowind, Planescape: Torment), that usually have an end-goal in mind but an unprescribed path, it is pretty clear what you need to do to succeed at every step of the way.
Those aside, this is a phenomenal game with incredible potential. Do yourself a favor and buy it.

NWN is an impressive RPG

Everything I have read about NWN impresses me that they have taken the first crucial steps to developing a 4GL world design application, as well as just a great game to play. Just as Civ2 developed much of its staying power from the huge number of scenario designers that kept the game perpetually fresh, NWN will be played for years to come because there will never be an end to the new situations and storylines. One could play this game forever because new content will be constantly added.

With its incredible graphics and 98% faithfulness to the 3ed rules (some things just are not in the initial release), this promises to be a hit for years.

Ok First of all this is the first real review. I am i the first person to review this product after it's release.

Ok As to product Was so excited to the release couldn't wait. even preorder this item a year before it was due to release. When it was released amazon took so long we went and got a copy at a real store. When we got home we loaded it up. After installing the normal pre menu movies came up they played perfectly. Then menu came up well here where everything feel apart. Game crashes locks up, delays on talking. I am ten minutes into the game to to it problem. I also want to meantion I have xp and all the game requierement even the sound and grafic card they recommend. The have already had a patch but it really did nothing to inprove the parts of the game that we are having problems with. I'm sure some day this game will play right. But right now I wouldn't recommend anyone buying this game. We even discussed selling this copy so we don't have to deal with this lovely product.
