Madden NFL 2001 may not be perfect, but no sports game is. The graphics are as superb as everyone says and the gameplay is excellent. There is something here for everyone. If you want to run your own team over time, the franchise mode includes all the elements including a salary cap. At the same time, people looking for an arcade style football game can simply pick two teams and play against each other. There are many of the great teams from history, every football stadium in the league, etc.
Are there negatives? Sure. The AI isn't always perfect. There are times when it seems that the computer controlled player is going to score and you can't stop their passing game no matter what you do. That said, I've managed to put up great defensive and offensive numbers and spent more hours having fun than I can count. I realize Madden 2002 is out now, but this is still a great game well worth playing.
Franchise realism requires trial and error...

I had a lot of fun with this game on franchise mode, but I needed to adjust the AI quite a bit to get acceptably realistic stats. Eight-minute quarters helped keep it real, but I never did get the pass defense quite where I wanted it. Anyway, it's a good game for franchise depth and playing against friends. If you just want to play individual games against the computer, it might be better as a rental.
Even though the franchise mode can be fun, it still needs lots of work. The other teams need a much better AI for trading, drafting, etc., and the financial aspects of the season need more depth.
The Madden cards are a nice touch that help keep the game interesting, but the same cannot be said about Madden's (or anyone else's) commentary. Luckily, I was able to zone out the commentary after a while (just like TV!).
Best game known to man kind!

Personal Ratings:
Sound: 8.9- Good on the field sound effects and well played music. Except the tunes get dull after a while. The only problem i had with the sound was the announcers they would say the same things over and over. Overall pretty good sound.
Graphic: 9.5- Nearly flawless graphics best for a psx2 game only problem is awkward touchdown celebrations. Great face and uniform detail you can even see adidas written on shirts. Like I said the graphics are the best for psx2 game.
Lasting appeal: 9.0-Great lasting appeal so much to do. examples: franchice mode, season mode, exhibiton mode etc. Edit and create a player my personal favorites. Can make a perfect team with edit player. You can put your teams stats up to 99 and make your team huge(does take a long period of time.) Also you can use madden cards for cheats etc.
Overall: 9.5 Great game if you are thinking of buying it i reccomend it highly. If not 2001, I reccomend 2002.

Really good game, (I'm using my aunt's screen name). Graphics are simply incredible, and I enjoy taking on good teams and beating them. I like the commentary, but it's really personal preference. (BTW, lots of people don't like Madden, and want him to shut up. Cripes, if you would just take time to look around under Settings, guess what? There's a little on/off button for Commentary. You can also adjust the sometimes frusteratingly stupid defensive/offensive A.I. from here.) Finally, just pick your favorite team, (or one from the past, if your favorite present day team stinks), and get going! MY personal choice: Titans. The only thing frusterating is the the All teams (I guess the best of each position that a team ever had,) and the teams from the past, all use numbers on their names and commentary instead of their names! Maybe if they put it on a DVD..
madden needs to shut up

i love this game but i cant rate it a six. loading is fast graphics are the best out of all the games on ps2 but the defenders get shaken and burned so easily it makes me wnat to puke. if you get at least five seconds to throw there is a man wide open every time. linebackers never cover wide open tight ends and half backs. the gameplay and controls are awesome.very easy game to learn.franchise mode is just breath taking. it is so ingenius.the game is not to easy and not to hard which is good.this isnt a big deal but the face masks are really wierd on some players.a couple of lineman on the ravens have little thin one bar masks like kikers. field goal kikin is excellent. but the commentatators need to shut up. madden offten says the same things over and over.giant flaw right here people. WAY TO MANY ONE HANDED CATCHES.need to fix it in next one. i highly recommend buying the next one and buying this one.
It really makes me mad that cullpepper is on the cover.randy moss makes him good:)
It's not prefect but is the best football game ever!

It is only missing the 2 minute drill, and the right roster. Just wait and buy Madden NFL 2002 this fall. But that doesn't mean this game isn't the best, it's just soon to be out of date.

I was very impressed with ea commitment to becoming the best sports gaming company. Madden 2001 for PS2 goes far as solidifying their gaming tile. The graphics are fantastic. The only problem I have with this title is the lack of Human defense. I am amazed at how my cornerbacks lack the tendency to stay with there man. the computers offensive line picks up a your blitz every time. QB sacks are rare the Computer always release and completes a pass when your man is about to put the qb in the hospital. but these are little things that can be tweaked for future releases. I love the franchise mode I have taken several franchise from the bottom to the top and kept within the salary cap. If you are a real football fan, you have to have this one.
Terrific Game even for jaded players

I bought my playstation 2 to play EA Sports NBA Live 2001 and was utterly disappointed. A person recommended this game to me and I was admittedly leary about getting it. One, I did not like the Madden Series of games. Two, NBA Live was so bad that I feared another EA title would be just as bad for PS 2. I was wrong. This is a great game. The designers clearly made the game for the PS 2 for the graphics are great, the gameplay smooth and the 360 degree replay camera is the best thing I have ever seen in a game.
True the offense rules, but if you draft some good corners or get a great one in trade or free agency the game is fine. The best thing about the game after the graphics is what I just described: the GM mode, when you are in franchise play, you can draft and manage salary caps and trade players, picks, etc. It is great.
