all they need to do is get rid of madden. his ... commentary drives me crazy! not only does he say blatently obvious things, he only has about 10 different comments. needless to say, after a couple of hours, you're ready to kill the guy. other than that, this game is outstanding. i especially recommend the franchise mode, where you take your favorite team through 30 seasons, complete with offseason drafts and free agents!
Big dissapointment!!!

I think this game is less than par. This game by no means is better than NFL2k1. The game play totally left me in a daze when playing defense. It seems that everything in this game is built around the offensive pass yet didn't take into consideration for defending the pass. I sometimes have double & triple coverage on a mediocre receiver and yet he still catches the ball. This really hurts my game because I love to play stiff hard nosed defense as NFL2K1 allows you to do. Dissapointing and wouldn't have purchased if I had know this.
Football Greatness with very little shortcomings

I received my PS2 for Christmas and 1 of the 3 games I bought was Madden 2001. I am an extremely big football fan and I played NFL 2k1 to death. Of course my first mission was to compare this game to 2K1 and when I first played the game I thought "Well, the graphics are awesome but whats up with the controls?". The controls seem a bit strange. For example, you can being a Wide Receiver and be holding "O" to sprint out, but once you catch the ball the sprint button is now "X". This will almost always lead you to spinning once you catch the ball (as "O" is spin once you have the ball). Maybe its me but when the players are at the coin toss, but they seriously look like midgets with big eyes. This is probably the only graphical dissapointment. The graphics are gorgeous. Everyting is round and smooth and even the side lines are detailed and 3D. Now one major concern is the ability to cut up. If you are sprinting up field and you see a gap to cut into, nope, it isnt happening. The game makes it almost impossible to cut because if so called "momentum". This is seriously annoying and frustrating. Another frustrating aspect is John Madden and Pat Summerall announcing. .... These are all minor and once you start playing you will find it is a seriously challenging and addicting game for every football fan. You cant compare this game to 2K1 because 2K1 has a more arcade feel to it. As a football sim and also as a fun party game Madden scores big and I highly reccomend it as a PS2 launch pick up.
The best football game on the market

This game will blow you away. As a fan of the countless Madden football games over the years, this one is, by far, the best. I gave it 5 stars because it offers the most realistic football experience you can have on a video game console. The graphics are sharp, the attention to detail will blow you away, and, most importantly, the game play is fantastic.
#1 football game out there

I think it is the best football game, the madden cards are so much fun working for and very challenging. The graphics are number 1 and NFL2K1 looks embarrassing to this games graphics. Creating a player is fun how you get to choose everything
Beats the competition but needs a little work.

I am the biggest fan of 989 Sports games. Especially Gameday for PS1. It's time for 989 Sports to move over on PS2. EA makes the best football game on PS2.
In My Perfect World: I would like a cross between Gameday on the PS1 and Madden on the PS2. The control of Gameday(PS1) is unmatched while Madden(PS2) surpasses Gameday in nearly every other category on the PS2.
Pros: Awesome graphics, realistic play execution. Enough difficulty of make it fun for experienced gamers.
Cons: Player control needs help. Tackling, if you can get to the offensive player without running by him, is difficult. Speed burst on offense and defense are different buttons on the control pad.
Played it loved it

I never quite got the hang of EA Sports' football game for the PC, but this one is pretty straight forward and gameplay difficulty can be increased as you learn and improve. I have actually found myself learning more about the game and understanding playcalling better.
Useful bits:
* being able to turn off the play clock while learning.
* practice mode (VERY useful)
* varying levels of automation to ease the learning curve
Downside :
* I can't seem to turn off on field display of running plays when playing two player with easy mode.
* Defense is pretty difficult to learn to actually play. I usually end up just calling plays and allowing the players to do their thing without trying to control my player. The learning curve here is steep.
Overall, a very fun game and it's gotten a non-football fan interested enough to play with me. Easy to pick up, deep enough to keep you mastering details for a long time, and despite not being the perfect game other people have complained about, it's pretty darn good.
Kickus Maximus... well, yes it does

If you love all things Madden, this game's for you. What more could I possibly say? This is THE best football game for any platform to date. The hip-hop soundtrack is also hella cool. BUY IT!
