O.K., but NFL2K1 is much better

Although this game has been hyped as the best football game out, in my opinion, NFL 2K1 is a much better game. To begin, NFL2K1 just seems much more realistic. The player models are more realistic, making the game play better. The flow of the game just doesn't seem to work, and it can get frustrating trying to control a player, especially on defense. If you own both systems, there is no question that you should buy NFL2K1, which is the ideal football game. If you don't own a Playstation 2, don't worry, its not worth all the hype. Wait until some good games come out.

For any of you out there that are thinking whether you should or shouldn't buy this game, read this review and I'll try to give you a pretty good idea. This is the most amazing console football game I have ever played, which is saying a lot cause there are many great pigskin classics, past and present. First, the graphics are unlike anything I've ever seen, even on dreamcast. Celebrations after great plays, players eyes following the ball when they catch it, grass getting stuck in helmets after hard tackles, its all in there and its all beautiful. The chain gang even moves out of the way when players are headed in their direction. Dont forget the awesome player models and the fluid 60 frames per second graphics as well. Visuals are definately the best part of this game. Another great thing is all the modes. There is something for every type of gamer, and each different mode will keep everyone happy for endless hours. The madden cards are in here too, which adds tremendous replay value to the game, and will have you trying to beat all the madden challenges the game has to offer. The only gripe I have with this game is the sound. The on-field noises are tremendous, but the announcing isn't half as good. You get the same old maddenisms, ex. "if you hit the ball down, the other guy isn't going to catch it". It would've been nice if they made the announcing deeper and funnier like the nfl2k series. Another plus of the game is the easy and cool menu screens along with theme music by rapper Xibit. Finally, the gameplay doesn't get any more realistic than this. Players juke and spin as they would in real life, and the ps2's emotion engine keeps all the tackles real and different, as they should be. Running is as realistic as the NFL, and passing is a game in itself. Gameplay is what the madden series is known for, and they even stepped it up a notch in this hit. Overall, if you are looking for a great sports game with tons of replay value, jaw-dropping graphics, and true-to-life gameplay, look no further than EA sports Madden 2001.

I was lucky enough to snag a PS2 package from Amazon, and it included Madden. For the past month or so, I have been playing NFL2K1 online and off, and basically just playing it because there were no better football titles out (not saying much). NFL2K1 isnt real football. It doesnt even try to be, which is a shame. The online play is its one advantage over Madden, but with no broadband support its a joke. LAG LAG LAG ruins nearly every game unless the guy you're playing is on the same street as you.
God bless you, EA, this is the most realistic game of football ever made. Now I can take NFL2K1 back to EB and trade it for a good game.
Not even close to NFL2k1

This game is wack. I'm sorry, but the players look like Blitz players, the control is off, the field looks choppy, the crowd looks like a painting and as always Madden comes up short of making a good game. NFK2K1 has more realistic movements, fields, player sizes, and just gameplay. I can pick up NFL2K1 and know exactly where the ball is going to go. If you know how to play real football, you will know how to play NFL2K1. If you like simulating NFL game expierence, you will like NFL2k1. Madden is disappointing. I have both and you will like NFL2K1 a lot more.
I hate to ruin the 5 star trend

I am a huge NFL fan and gaming fan. This game appealed to me at first but then slowly lost its appeal after several games- here is a short list of reasons-- The punting system just stinks, it is way to easy to kick a long punt and one bounce it out of bounds without a chance of a return-- the learning curve of the game is also quite high because the controls arn't the easiest thing to get used to for younger gamers-- The controls are a little sluggish and are a little slower to respond (sometimes in sports games this is intentional to be realistic, but this just got annoying). Well that was my two cents and i would just like to say that i am also a proud owner of NFL2K1 which also has its problems, but til next year when EA fixes all these problems I'll put it up against Madden any day.
Cool Game, but still unrealistic

The graphics are the best thing on this game. Old Maddens may have been plagued by too much defense -- 2001 is plagued by too much offense. Playing the computer gets very old very quick. There are times when the computer can NOT be stopped, no matter what you do (and this is only the PRO level). You blitz to try to force pressue, and they burn you. You anticipate a pass - they WILL complete it no matter what. I have not seen a game where the computer did not have at least one 80+ yard RAC (run after catch).
I don't know why there can't be a 'complete' madden - one that is visually stunning as well as REALISTIC.
If you want a game where you trade touchdowns, this is it. If you want a game that isn't 100% offense, look elsewhere or wait.
THE best game for PS2

Madden 20001 for PS2 is going to be the best game EVER. I haven't played it as of yet, however, I have seen movies and screen-shots of the game. It is so smooth and it looks just like the real thing. While watching one of the movies online, someone walked up behind me and thought I was watching a live feed of an actual game (it was Sunday so it could have been) It is just SO amazing. I have one on pre-order and so should you!!!
By FAR the latest and greatest!

I am SO taken with Madden 2001 and the Playstation 2 it's unbelieveable. This game is the Alpha and Omega of sports games and once again, EA hits a TOWERING homerun. I've played the Dreamcast version of football, and while enjoyable, it takes a backseat to the gameplay of Madden 2001. If you could only afford 1 Playstation 2 game (and if you actually have one, congratulations!) this would be the one to get! My next move is to add the multiplayer controller and enjoy the fun just that much more. When Sony and EA got together, it was a match made in video game heaven, Madden 2001 just proves that dreams DO come true!
The single greatest football title ever.

The Cleveland Browns, led by the magnificent Doug Pederson, have three games remaining in their first season. The Dawgs have gone 6 and 7, bypassing everyone's expectations. Their playoff hopes still alive, the Browns sign two free agents to supplement their battered offensive line. Three more wins, and they may eek out a wildcard spot in the playoffs. If not, they'll have all off-season to think about what they could have done differently.
If they don't get in, they can look forward to a solid spot in the draft; maybe they can pick up a couple rookie superstars. Will they re-sign Wali Rainer? Kevin Johnson? And what of Doug Pederson? He leads the Pro Bowl voting, shockingly enough, but is he the future of this franchise? These are the tough choices every General Manager has to make.
These are the tough choices of Madden NFL 2001. Brilliant gameplay and brilliant management features make for a brilliant game. It's a must-own title.

I want to start by saying that my four stars are not five because being a serious football fan(go raiders!) I have knowledge of the game and its small points as well as its large points so my expectations are high.I have only one thing to say negative about MADDEN NFL 2001 and all other suggestions are just that, suggestions, not vital points. My only negativity for this game came in the form of madden and summerall's voices. Please, ea sports, I know his name is on the package, I know this particular series of football video games cannot be matched, not even closely, but either give madden more, a lot more, to say, or keep the name and get a new announcer. I have a suggestion, I believe it to be an original suggestion, have madden do the previews of the game at the beggining. You know have him talk about relevent issues for each team, what they need, and not need to do, and then get paul mcguire and joe theisman(man, those guys are awesome) to say they are filling in for madden and summerall, and then madden's happy and so are your gamers. Keep the name, give madden some playing time, and then throw in mcguire and theismann and prevent all of us from turning off the commentary.Quickly a few more improvements:breakaway speed increased, line penetration with the defense increased(without having to use a blitzer or a madden card), more involvement by the coaches, faster running(with options to turn down game speed), and last but not least, real faces just like in live 2001 and nhl 2001. pleeeeeassse. p.s. don't forget on line capabilites we're trying to move forward not backwards now m'kay(see ya sega when that happens) peace.
