I must say that this was a pleasant surprise. I have been playing "Blitz 2001" since it came out and didn't realize that I wanted a more challenging game. This was the one I was waiting for and didn't even know it! First things first....the graphics are amazing! The game takes some getting used to, but it does come to you quickly enough. A nice bonus was to be able to select from teams of old. Have you ever wanted to be the '75 Steelers? How about the '85 Bears? You can and much more. Have you ever wanted to be a GM? Build the ultimate fantasy football team that YOU control! If you love football and you don't get this one, get your head checked out!

Loved it but...

This is the first game I bought for my new PS2, and I have to say it's superior to any console football game I've played so far - including NFL2K1. I own both the Dreamcast and PS2, and this game is hands down superior to its chief competitor. The players are modelled in extremely lifelike fashion - the detail of the uniforms and equipmnent particularly stand out. Player movement and control are fantastic, as you would expect out of the Madden series. All in all, I would've given this game 5 stars without hesitation except for the following annoyances:

1. The Sound: OK, the crowd sounds great. They even have cheers for their specific home team, which is a nice touch. The crunching hits are lifelike also. But the announcers sound tinny and horrible - not to mention John and Pat sound as if they just rolled out of bed and into the booth. A little excitement wouldn't have killed them.

When the sideline announcer came on, she too sounded as if she was talking while standing in the middle of an empty grain silo. I thought it was my speakers at first but then I realized that the crunching hits and roaring crowd sounded great, it was just the "live" people that bit. I don't know how this happened, but it's damn annoying.

2. What the heck?... I am a huge Raiders fan, so imagine my surprise when their kicker, Sebastian Janikowski, suddenly started kicking with his right leg (he's left-legged in real life by the way). I haven't played all the teams yet, but I hope that Payton Manning isn't a southpaw all of a sudden...

Don't get me wrong, I've had a great time so far with this game. The graphics are top-notch and the gameplay is fluid and just downright fun. I'm just hoping that more glitches don't pop up along the course of my "season."

The Best Football Game Ever

Tecmo football for NES was a fun game to play and done as well as a game could be done at that time. Madden 2001 has that level of fun, if not better, plus the added bonus of stunning graphics and gameplay to blow your mind.

If you love or even mildly like football, this game will rock your world. It is fun to play against the computer in a season or in franchise mode (where you control a team through multiple seasons controlling every aspect of what your team does). You can create your own players and best of all is the Madden card feature. You play against the computer, earn madden points to allow you to buy packs of Madden Cards. The madden cards unlock historical players, historical teams, or give you powerups, plus a bunch of other neat stuff.

If you are in need of the madden card set, send me an email. This is the ultimate football game, versus the computer or your friends. BUY it and you won't regret it.

By far the best football sim ever! I have the PC version also, and with the exception of online play, the PS2 version blows it away! If you like football at all and own a PS2, this is a MUST BUY!

Unbelievable!

When I put in the disc and started the game I could do nothing but stare at the screen. I was in total awe of the game's realism. Once out of my initial shock I began to play the game, and never have I been more impressed. The graphics are great and the game play is better. The AI is unbelievable. The detail is so great, the players' pants even get dirty as the game progresses. Start a game at dusk and watch how night falls during the game. There has never been a better football game. If you own a PS2 you must have this game!

If you like sports you'll love this!

After not following American Football as i live in England, i was surprised to have found myself so engrosed in this game. After playing the game for a short while i was starting to learn all the plays and reading oppositions formations. I even found myself following the American games in reality. The graphics are close to photographic quality, and movements are mapped to almost perfection, right down to blinking and talking. This game is breath-taking, a must have for any sports lover!

I owned Madden 1997 on the Sega Genesis and Madden 1998 and 1999 on PS One and I have to say that Madden 2001 for PS2 BLOWS them away. This is by far the best sports game EVER. First of all, each of the players is recognizeable from his facial features. The different angles mirror TV footage almost exactly, sometimes you forget you are playing a game (in fact people walking into the room assumed it was a televised game). The gameplay is far smoother and easier to master than previous versions. GET THIS GAME.

Nearly Flawless

WOW! Truly amazing graphics. It's not just the fluid movement of the players, it's the minor details. The players adjust their pads after a hit, in a dome they all throw four shadows because of the indoor lighting, the linemen drop the first down marker and run out of the way when the play comes at them, and on and on. Not to mention the depth of play, playing a season, owning a franchise, worrying about the salary cap...it's all there! Or you can just simply play FOOTBALL! The only downside I can really point out is the announcing. It's repetitive and quickly becomes annoying. Not to mention, Lesley Visser is TERRIBLE as the sideline reporter, she sounds like the VISSERTRON 2001, her line-reading is more wooden than Pinnochio. The game however, is simply to beautiful to look at and play to allow the audio to detract from it. Buy this if you want the best football game ever made.

Madden beats out NFL 2K1

Madden has much more to offer than Dreamcast's NFL 2K1. First, the graphics overall are much more smoother. 2K has more edgey graphics as the players are viewed in geometric shapes. Their arms and legs are visibly noticable in the form of rectangles and triangles. The programmers should have taken more time to smooth out the angles on the players. The only advantage Sega has is the facial features of its players. Madden did not develop its player's facial features as well. Second, the reality of Madden far surpasses that of 2K1. The "physics-based" platform for Madden allows for more realistic plays, tackles, and outright game performance. Attention to detail is KEY for Madden. In 2K1, the football's rotation of the laces are INCORRECT when thrown by a lefty quarterback. The laces should rotate counterclock-wise, but instead they rotate clockwise, as if thrown by a right-handed QB. At this level of gaming, the little details make a difference. Finally, for all the people who say that Madden's players seem short and stocky, simply change the camera angle to Classic or Madden camera, and the players become just as big, without graphic distortion, as those in Sega's 2K1.

This is the best

This is the best football game out right now. Yes even better than sega's NFL 2K1. EA sports has payed attention to every detail this time around. The graphics and controls are top notch. The players have facial expressions and grass even gets caught in thier facemasks. There are even the actuall coaches who react to the plays on the field. The instant replays are just jaw dropping. A great addition I thought was the Madden Cards which you can use to unlock some retired football greats like John Elway and Barry Sanders. My only question is how EA will top this next year?
