I have been playing Madden NFL for 10 years or so. Started on the genesis and most recently I bought 2001 for the Playstation 1. Ya ya ya, same ol' same ol'. Some new features and improvements here and there... But, the PC version and the Playstation 1 versions cannot hold a candle to the PSX2 version. Madden has always set the standard for other football games to try and copy. This new PSX2 version will be the most spectacular football video game ANYONE HAS EVER SEEN. Early indications are that the release of Madden 2001 PSX2 will set all the competitors back about 5 years. It will also mark a new standard by which all football games will try and follow. I have seen them all, this is as realistic as it gets !!! If your wondering if it is worth paying 500 dollars to play it on Oct 26th (500 after you buy hardware and all) ?? My opinion is that I would buy it if it cost 1000 dollars. There has never been a game more technologically advanced, ever. The release will be historical.
Obviously the greatest football game ever, but...

If I were to come on and tell you this game wasn't the best football game i have ever played, I would have to be out of my mind. There are a few small things I could see EASports doing in the next edition to spice things up. First of all the graphics are spectacular. Although from the surface they look somewhat like Dreamcast as you progress into gameplay, you get upclose looks at coaches and the sidelines and they added some cool details like a bench on the sideline, and the players on the bench arent just number 88. (Meaning they aren't just fake players. If your the bucs on Offense Warren Sapp is on the sideline and you can see him not just a fake player) and they arent just statue like. Maybe they couldve made the coaches look realistic. Wade Phillips looks 50. Now come on we all know the guy has to be 60. On to the gameplay. Again the best I have ever set my eyes on, but its a little too easy to run the ball up the gut. Unless playing against a peer, running is pretty rediculous. Braking tackles is cake. The only thing I think is challenging running the ball is getting bursts of speed and breaking away. Things I would love to see in the next version, although i only played for an hour at a friends, something i would love to see EAS add would be a gamebreak or footage of other games. I remember way back in the day of Madden '96 for the SNES. After your game was over you had the option of watching the ending of another exciting game. An addition i do fully approve of is the EA Sportsticker. On the bottom of the screen, scores of games come and go which helps make this game realistic. I hope this review was helpful, and believe me 4 stars is no bad review. I just expected the tiniest bit more, from the graphics especially. -Peace
Steep but quick learning curve....

After reading all the prior reviews, I can't add much about the game's graphics or playability...both are superb. However, one thing a buyer might be interested in is; Madden's learning curve. Learning the basic buttons and plays, so you can actually play well, in rookie mode will take about 30 minutes. I came from Madden 2000 on the mac platform and had to "unteach" myself several of my my favorite buttons and plays. (This made for some hilarious missed tackles and crazy passes while under NO pressure.) However, the game is quick to learn. The in-game help is surprising well done...no need for the manual until you get into the fine nuances of the game. Once mastering the buttons, you will then find yourself tinkering with rosters, plays and players. Great fun and not difficult once you have spent a little time playing the game.
Perhaps the real beauty of Madden 2001 is this: It is a complex or as simple as you want it. The game provides many "auto" and "easy" settings until you get the hang of the game. Once comfortable, you can turn all help off and control all aspects of the action. (I still use Kicking Help!)
Again, a slightly steep learning curve for the first 30 minutes and the rest will come as natural as riding a bicycle. If you get this game, and I suggest you do, give it the initial 60 minutes it well deserves. You will find yourself hooked for sure.
Worth a Buy!...

This game is definitely worth the money! From the sound, to the graphics to the ease and customization of gameplay this entry into the football game market is outstanding! The customization is really an incredible feature. Not only do you create the player in the usual way BUT you also get the opportunity to decide on the actual appearance of the created player! You can add elbow pads, eye paint and even change the cage on the helmet! There is definite replay value here as well. By playing the Franchise mode you can manage your team through multiple seasons! The Madden Challenge is another interesting feature. You win tokens through accomplishing various preset challenges such as sacking the QB or breaking a run for over 20yrds. With these tokens you can buy packs of cards. These cards can give you cheats during game play or increase a players ability for a given amount of time. These cards can also be risked in a match between another opponent or traded with him/her! With all of the features this game offers you won't be disappointed. So, I have to give it a "Worth a Buy".
This is the PS2 Game to Buy FIRST!

Madden 2001 is everything the PS1 version is and more, more, MORE. It has the smoothest player movements of any game I've seen, even better than NFL2K1. The physics of the players moves are more realistic than ever. When a HB makes a cut to the outside, the player doesn't perform a right angle turn, which defies all natural laws. He also can't stop on a dime. He'll stumble a bit if you want the player to reverse course.
One cool addition in the PS2 version is the player creation. You can choose a player's helmet style, shoulder pad style, size, give him long sleeves, elbow pads, and even the turf tape on the elbows if you want.
Passing is as sweet as ever, and you still have the ability to make things harder on yourself by having manual receiving options turned on.
With a higher memory capacity on the PS2, there is also more room for commentary. You will still find repetition, but it isn't as prominent as in the PS1 game.
Overall, this is the best football game that has been released so far for a home video game platform. (Sorry, Sega.) It has the looks of being a PS2 classic, or at least until Madden 2K2 comes out. If you have a PS2, and you do not have Madden 2001, WHAT ARE YOU DOING READING WHAT I HAVE TO SAY? GO CLICK THE SHOPPING CART BUTTON AND BUY THE DARN THING. You will NOT be disappointed!
Excellent, with only minor flaws. . .

The graphics and gameplay are smooth and realistic, like everyone has said. Only problems:
1) Kicks are too easy to aim, but too difficult to control distance-wise. I've found that 25 yard punts are not at all uncommon.
2) Almost never get pressure on QB without blitzing, as shedding blocks is very difficult . . . and without pressure, QB will pick you apart.
3) QB's never over/under-throw balls, but this is made up for by a high drop-rate among receivers (especially in the flats, which is very annoying).
4) Buttons are complciated and take time to feel natural.
Still, extremly enjoyable and very impressive. Compared to past Madden games, this one is bug free.
Very good...but.....

Madden 2001 for PS2 is the best football game for any console, period. But why not 5 stars ??? This game would be a 5 star game IF one could play respectable pass defense , as in the old Genesis Madden 93-type game. In THAT game, you could usually be pretty sure where you needed to be to knock down (or , wow...actually INTERCEPT) a pass from the opposition. In PS2 Madden , it's an almost lottery-style thing. EA definitely overdid the receiving ability (WR's seem to have 10 foot arm extensions and make one-hand impossible catches) in this game. Now I'm sure they did it for younger folks' "excitement" of offensive prowess, but to REAL football die-hards who played older versions (again MADDEN 93 for Genesis) it was nice to actually know you could play some consistant defense and not be "torqued" by some lame, impossible catch. In this game, it's VERY difficult to be in the proper place/alignment to even knock down a pass, let alone intercept it. It's sad that you can play great defense for 2 downs and then be unrealistically "torqued" by one IMPOSSIBLE catch (can someone say Moss-automatic-touchdown if he catches?) where sometimes 3 DB's are there but somehow can't even knock a pass down, but the WR can catch it almost behind his back ! Still, aside from this (and EA..if you're reading this, this IS A PRETTY BIG hindrance) this game is top-notch in regards to graphics, style, stategy, etc. I truly look forward to revisions of this game being as good of upgrades as the old Genesis version improvements. In one or two years, Madden 2002/2003 "should" be an ultimate game. Wow, maybe EA will even present it on DVD with real players, etc.
Time for everyone to give their yearly fifty to EA Sports

Is this a fun game? Sure it is. It looks great. Play is fun too, the create-a-player feature is cool...
...and yet, this game leaves me feeling rather ho hum. The Madden series has evolved over the years, and across platforms, but at the end of the day it's the same old Madden with more makeup on. Maybe the beta version I got to fool with was stripped down, but almost everything looks very, very familiar as far as how the game is built.
If PS2 is going to have lots of sports games, I strongly suggest Sony go the Dreamcast route and produce their own sports disks specifically for PS2. With Madden being a PS2/PSX/PC product, created generally for a variety of platforms, EA will never totally optimize a sports game to take advantage of the higher power the PS2 provides.
AMAZING GAME

This is deffinitly one of the best games I have ever played. The graphics are amazing everything from the quarterbacks eyes as he is getting sacked to interceptions that bounce off players backs before they get scoped up just before they hit the ground. Plus, the added fact that the sidelines look much better becasue players, coachs, refs, etc. move around and look just like the players on the field. This is just one of many little things that make the game more enjoyable. The sound is good but not great. You can can hear players call out screen when a screen pass is being thrown and players say they made a mistake but the anouncers are ordinary(almost the same as PS1). The replay value is probally the best part. It has all the normal good stuff like madden cards and franchiese mode which are great but becasue of the great gameplay, graphics, and other things it makes it even better. Overall an astonding game!!

This game rocks both graphically and in gameplay. Its close attention to detail and realism makes NFL 2K1 look obsolete! Your options for gameplay are almost limitless! You can choose your favorite team from almost any year. If your a Raiders fan, you can go back to the glory days of 1984, or if you're a Dolphins fan, go to early 80's. You can even pick a team from the 1950's! Realism is realized in this game since you can see the little dots on the football the blades of grass. Also, you can't just win with one type of offense, like other football games. You have to run and pass, and the running is so real! Breaking tackles is possible, and you can see holes open up provided by the blocking! If you don't have this game, you've never played a football video game before!
