DONT BUY THE HYPE LIKE I DID!

This game is not all that great. Neither is the ps2. sure one day it will be as good as sony promised. (at least 5 years) but the differneces between dreamcasts nfl2k1 and madden 2001 are huge. Madden 2001 just has shiner looking players. thats IT! slightly better graphics. madden actually has fat looking players that dont look real, tackle real, or do anything real. they have the same animations and the ai is terrible. i own both games so i know what im talking about. NFL2k1 also has online play. Madden doesnt. Be happy with your dreamcast and dont even worry abouot the ps2 shortage. there isnt a reason to get one anyway.

Franchise realism requires trial and error...

I had a lot of fun with this game on franchise mode, but I needed to adjust the AI quite a bit to get acceptably realistic stats. Eight-minute quarters helped keep it real, but I never did get the pass defense quite where I wanted it. Anyway, it's a good game for franchise depth and playing against friends. If you just want to play individual games against the computer, it might be better as a rental.

Even though the franchise mode can be fun, it still needs lots of work. The other teams need a much better AI for trading, drafting, etc., and the financial aspects of the season need more depth.

The Madden cards are a nice touch that help keep the game interesting, but the same cannot be said about Madden's (or anyone else's) commentary. Luckily, I was able to zone out the commentary after a while (just like TV!).

Really good game, (I'm using my aunt's screen name). Graphics are simply incredible, and I enjoy taking on good teams and beating them. I like the commentary, but it's really personal preference. (BTW, lots of people don't like Madden, and want him to shut up. Cripes, if you would just take time to look around under Settings, guess what? There's a little on/off button for Commentary. You can also adjust the sometimes frusteratingly stupid defensive/offensive A.I. from here.) Finally, just pick your favorite team, (or one from the past, if your favorite present day team stinks), and get going! MY personal choice: Titans. The only thing frusterating is the the All teams (I guess the best of each position that a team ever had,) and the teams from the past, all use numbers on their names and commentary instead of their names! Maybe if they put it on a DVD..

The best football game yet!

EA sports really hit the nail on the head with their newest edition to the Madden series. They packed in astounding graphics with great gameplay. Not to mention all of the little extras that were put in. What else could gamers ask for?

Madden NFL 2001 has graphics that far surpass any other football game on the market, with players actually looking like their real-life counterparts. The game engine in Madden 2001 allows for the physics of the running and passing game to seem real. The jukes and spins are no longer moves that can be used to break an unrealistic number of tackles, as seen in other games, but are used for finding holes in the defense to try and break away for a long run.

Besides the great gameplay, this game is also loaded with tons of other great features. There is the create-a-player that is becoming a must for all good sport games. This feature allows gamers the opportunity to create their fantasy player with a wide variety of options. Gamers can tweak players' attributes and create a star player that is worth millions.

The franchise mode is where the replay is at for the single player. Gamers can pick their favorite team and be the coach and general manager. They decide who to sign and release in the hopes of creating a winning team. In this mode, you do not only play through one entire season, but can play through multiple seasons. At the end of each season, the gamer must take control of the off season duties and try to keep their job.

The only real problem with this game is the speed at which the players run and move. At times, it can seem that they have a floating effect. This really affects the way the hits and tackles look. They don't seem to have that hard-hitting approach that is in real football. However, these problems are not enough to drop the overall score. In the battle between Madden 2001 and that other "2k1" game, Madden squeeks by for the victory. This game is a must buy for any football fan.

QUICK TIP: Try using the "Cover 2" defense in the Dime formation. Then bring the Left End over between the Defensive Tackle and the Right End. You should be able to squeeze between the Offensive Tackle and the Right Guard, which are occupied with the DT and RE, for a quick sack. I had 25 sacks in one game,(5 min. quarters), and over 175 for the season.

Best Console Sports Game Ever

I am a convert to the Madden football series dating back to 1998. Prior to that I was a Sega Genesis owner, who eschewed the hype surrounding the Madden opting instead for the lesser-hyped, yet fundamentally-sound, 'College Football's National Championship' (which, incidentally, I still consider to be one of the best football games ever created for a console). When I switched over to the Playstation in 1996, I was an NFL Gameday fan. But in 1998, I converted over to the Madden series and have been hooked since

So how does this latest edition of Madden translate to the new generation of consoles?

GRAPHICS - 9 I couldn't tell you the difference between a framerate and an interest rate, but I can tell you this: the graphics for this game are absolutely incredible. I just cannot do them justice in written format. Although a cliché, you really do have to see them to believe them. The auto replays are astonishing. Details such as a player's breath in cold weather and the glare of the stadium lights on a player's helmet augment the experience. Why not a 10? Occasionally, the picture becomes slightly choppy. And those demon-like eyes! Don't stare directly into them! :)

GAMEPLAY - 9 The realistic gameplay is unmatched. One thing I noticed immediately was that the juke and spin moves are not as responsive as those found in the PSX version. (The juke move is supposedly touch-sensitive; I've not noticed this.) In the PSX version, the juke move was a wild swiping move, almost like a player skating across a frozen pond. It was highly effective, but not entirely realistic. Same with the spin move. These moves in the PS2 version are not nearly as arcade-ish as their PSX counterparts. This took me a while to get used to. However, the fact is that these moves in the PS2 version are much more realistic than those in the PSX.

The Madden series has built its reputation through a detailed franchise mode, where you control an extensive off-season of trades, signings and a 7-round draft. Veterans of the Madden series will be glad to know that the franchise mode is in place and deeper than ever. I have found it more challenging to negotiate with players than in the PSX version. Agents for more highly-valued players are not likely to deviate from their original salary requests. Again, a little more frustrating, but much more realistic. (One quick sidenote: I truly wish EA Sports could take this franchise mode and translate it into a similar mode for its NBA Live, NHL and Triple Play series.)

The Create-A-Player mode is incredible. The amount of detail you can adjust is simply overwhelming, but in a great way.

A couple of negatives in the gameplay: 1) Kicking in M2K1 has been a challenge so far, as the kicking meter is a faint red and is difficult to see. Hopefully this will be fixed in the 2K2 version.

2) Sacking the QB thus far has been an impossible task for me. On M2K1-PSX I could work through blocks and get to the QB a couple times a game. So far this has not been the case with the PS2 version. Even controlling a defensive tackle with an overall rating of 90 I struggle breaking free from a guard or center rated in the low 70s.

3) WR Patterns - This is really the one aspect of the Madden series which has always frustrated me. For as long as I can remember, receivers in the Madden series have not always run full patterns. This is no exception in the PS2 version. Simply put, you can't throw timing patterns in this game. In order for a QB to throw an adequate 10 yard out, he must throw the ball *before* the receiver makes his cut. If you do this in Madden, the receiver, who's supposed to run an out-pattern, changes his route most often to a fly pattern. You're supposed to be able to press the L2 in order to lead the receiver. A couple of problems: (a) most of the time this does not work, and (b) the concept is that QBs are *supposed* to lead the receivers, so why should I have to press a special button? The aforementioned 'College Football's National Championship' for the Genesis was hands-down the most accurate football game in this regard. If I threw an out, the receiver ran an out. This is a detail that, although very frustrating to me, does not detract from my overall enjoyment of the game.

AUDIO - 6 Summerall and Madden are exhaustingly repetitive. It's time for EA take advantage of the full power of the PS2 and jazz up the play-by-play. And one more question: Is Leslie Visser really necessary? The environmental sounds, the hits on the field and all of the other noises that come along with the football game are in here and are well-done.

REPLAY VALUE - 9 The in-depth franchise mode means that it's not likely you'll get bored with this game too quickly. I didn't think I would, but I miss the 2 Minute Warning play mode and the fantasy draft mode that was available in Madden 2001 for the PSX. Hopefully they will add these features in the 2002 version.

Furthermore, for those who prefer more arcade-like play, there are Madden Cards which unlike special codes. You collect these by accomplishing certain tasks. I've not used these, but people I know say that they truly enhance their overall enjoyment of the game.

OVERALL - 9 This is the best football game ever created for a console. The audio can be maddening at times (no pun intended), but it's not enough to take away from the overall enjoyment of the game. As the PS2 enters its second year and programmers become more familiar with it, I hope that some of these little quirks can be fixed. But this is definitely a must-own for football fans.

I rate this at 4 1/2 stars! Close to perfection.

I have been playing video games for well over 20 years, and this is by far the best thing in video game football yet. I can only expect that as developers learn more about the PS2 they will surpass this excellent first attempt.

The gameplay is not flawless, but it is extremely good, and an awful lot of fun. There is a serious amount of depth in this game, mainly in the Franchise mode. My only complaint is that this game really needs a play editor. Maybe next year, EA?

Graphics are superb, animations are highly realistic, physics are terrific. The worst aspect of this game is the repetitive commentary. That, and the absence of a play editor prevent me from giving the game 5 stars.

I've been playing this game a lot in the few weeks that I've owned it, and I would heartily recommend it to any serious football fan!

Must have for football fans and PS2 Owners

From the current list of PS2 games available today, Madden 2001 is one of the top 3. I am a huge football fan. My girlfriend is not. She likes this game as much as I do. The graphics are of course incredible. The players' movements are much more realistic. There are too many features in this game to touch on all of them. The only snags to Madden 2001 are the commentary (Madden repeats the same thing over and over and Pat Sommerall gives away the playaction pass before it even happens). I've only played in the default setting so far, but it seems ridiculously easy to complete passes (good receivers catch 50 yard passes one handed while triple covered) and the CPU hardly runs the ball. This is bad because it is ridiculously hard to play pass defense. Other than these, everything else about this game is excellent.

A football masterpice!

It is great! When you creat a player you get to make his face and the graphics are the best I've seen yet! If you could get any game for PS2 this is the one! It is great. You can go in Francise mode and creat your own coach! You can even challenge the play if you think it is a bad call. I think it is the #1 game of the year.

Best sports game out there

I am not typically a fan of sports games, but football games have tended to be the exception. This game is definitely the best sports game I have ever seen. The graphics are amazing, and the attention to detail quite impressive. Game play is usually quite good, and it's especially fun to play against friends. When you play against the computer it's impossible to get thru the defensive line to sack the quarterback, and it seems that most catches on either side are one-handed (which is cool but not all that realistic), but other than that the game just rocks.

I have 13 games for PS2 and by far I think this is the best game for PS2. The graphics are great and the comments from Madden go along with the plays you make. This game alows you to have 8 players play at one time with 2 multitaps, but I think it is to confusing. This game is a must have.
