Best game known to man kind!

Personal Ratings:

Sound: 8.9- Good on the field sound effects and well played music. Except the tunes get dull after a while. The only problem i had with the sound was the announcers they would say the same things over and over. Overall pretty good sound.

Graphic: 9.5- Nearly flawless graphics best for a psx2 game only problem is awkward touchdown celebrations. Great face and uniform detail you can even see adidas written on shirts. Like I said the graphics are the best for psx2 game.

Lasting appeal: 9.0-Great lasting appeal so much to do. examples: franchice mode, season mode, exhibiton mode etc. Edit and create a player my personal favorites. Can make a perfect team with edit player. You can put your teams stats up to 99 and make your team huge(does take a long period of time.) Also you can use madden cards for cheats etc.

Overall: 9.5 Great game if you are thinking of buying it i reccomend it highly. If not 2001, I reccomend 2002.

Madden 2001 is absolutely amazing. Graphics are stunning. It's almost as if you are watching football on tv with the cut scenes in between plays. I'm not even a die hard football fanatic and I found myself playing for hours without even knowing it. My wife bought it for me so it's her own fault why I'm surgically attatched to this game. The sounds are great, you can tell when you really nail a guy by the sounds. The only flaw I see with this game is the realism of the hits are a bit off. The bodies bend a little unrealistically with some hits. Now I'm looking for stuff to pick at as the game is overall unreal. The lights even reflect in the helmet for goodness sakes. It's so real.....If you own a PS2, you have no choice but to own Madden 2001.

Awsome Football game ever

I am 16 and a die hard sports fan and this game is the best. I went over my friends house and My friend and I played it for 7 hours start (eating of course in between) The instant replay is awsome the tackles are like real life and just a awsome game.. The only bad thing about the game is the commantary but who needs that you got the radio to listen to while you are playing it. This is the best. When and if i get PS2 this is the first game that i want...

I have been blessed by a higher being. I received a PS2 for Christmas this year (I never believed anyone would be able to locate one). The first game I played with my new system was Madden 2001. I had never played the game before, I never stopped to try it in Best Buy or other retailers, and was instantly in awe of the game's incredible graphics. Each player is unique. EA left no detail out. Each player has a unique face and position specific face mask. The player can even see the players' different numbers during the actual game play. The players even have position specific facemasks (many people wouldn't notice this but it is something one should not take for granted). The players' uniforms even soil during the course of a game. I found it hard to believe when Eddie George hopped up after a five yard run and I first noticed that his pants were begining to have a brown tint to them. Madden also includes sound clips and animations of both proud and disapointed coaches.

The gameplay is top notch as well. The game uses the new analog Dualshock 2 controller to it's full potential. The game gives the most options to the ball-carrier than any I have played before. It also gives you many options defensively (swim move, etc.) which few games offer.

The playbooks are full complete. They offer more plays and options than many players will ever take the time to use and explore. The game also includes a setting which helps the novice player learn to call plays.

Overall, Madden 2001 for the PS2 is the best football ever. It has a cinematic quality which is unique. The player is experience things that only the NFL player was able to until now. I recommend this game to anyone who has a PS2 and even is even remotely interested in the game. You will not be disapointed.

You won't be disappointed

Reading through the other reviews, the fact that the game has great graphics has been beaten to death. I've only seen 2 aspects of the graphics that I found were mediocre. First, in the player close up shots, most of the faces and facial expressions look the same. Second, when one of the Packer players does the "Lambo Leap" into the crowd, the people in the stands are nothing more than blobs, much like I would expect to see in an old Atari system.

The game itself is incredible. The thing I liked most is that there is a "cheat" setting that will show you where the players are supposed to run on the field (before the ball is snapped).

The game also has a franchise mode where you run the team on the field and off. Besides play selection and actual controlling the players during the season, you are also required to resign players, sign free agents, and sign college players in the NFL draft. You even have a salary cap to deal with. Though all the post season events are menu driven and there isn't much room for negotiation in the contracts, the idea is still cool.

This is the first game I bought for PS2 and I am not disappointed.

Spooky

The graphics are simply outstanding. Navigating through the menus, setting up profiles, editing rosters, creating players are much simpler than last years model.

The playability is ridiculously easy on the lower levels. If you're an experienced Madden player, just skip to either the All-pro level or All Madden level.

I played one game on the easiest level, and Terrell Davis had 300 yards rushing before halftime. Even behind backup players, running is just way to easy. Unlike NHL, the faces are way too generic looking, and nobody really resembles the actual player.

I did find passing more difficult. The receivers all seem to drop the ball a little bit too easy, but all in all, it's a great game.

Mostly Eye Candy - Play leaves a lot to be desired

No one will argue the point that this is probably the nicest looking game of all time. And by all means buy it just so your friends are jealous. If I had rated this game on the first few days I had it I would have given it a five. The game however has some serious shortcomings that will become all to apparent after several exhibition matches. There are three main areas that bother me about this game. I'll give an example for each:

1. The limited playbook. Ball on The 50 - 3 seconds left down by six. How do I call a "Hail Mary" - short answer you can't. You can call a play that will get two guys in the end zone but not everyone.

2. Inappropriate Player Reactions. 8 seconds left Cris Carter catches ball on opponent's 20. All he has to do is get out of bounds to stop the clock. He doesn't make it and there are no timeouts left. Game Ends and Carter is out there talking trash (like he just scored the game winning touchdown) -instead of beating his head in the turf.

3. Limited Dialog for Play by Play. "That Ball had too much "POP!" on it! EA must have only had enough money to put Madden and Summerall in the sound booth for 15 minutes each. Sounds like a broken record.

4. Dumb Players. Generally on a "Screen" your blockers should lead you up field to get some extra yardage. Instead, especialy on the screen to your halfback. They always go to the same point on the field and just stand there whether they are blocking someone or not. - frustrating.

That said, had this game not had such great graphics I would have given it a 2 for gameplay. I'll go with the flow and get it a 4 for looks.

Good game, but can John and Pat shut up.

Of course it dosen't take a genius to realise the graphics replay and fun are A+ material in Madden, the only problem the sound. Madden and Summerall, can you please talk about things dealling with the game thats going on.Another sound problem is the Madden Rap. I would rather listen to Shaq rap than listen to these rap wannabe songs. (however one song is O.K.) The rest of the games sounds like the tackles and taunts are very nice. I gave this game 5 stars because the fun is over the top. Overall very fun and very addictive,

Simply Stunning.

When I purchased Madden 2001 for my PS-1, I thought it was the best thing I had ever seen. Great game, fun to play, appealing on so many levels to so many different types of sports gamers. When I saw Madden 2001 on the PS2, I thought I had died and gone to heaven. That didn't compare to the thrill of actually owning a PS2 and playing this game. Im tempted to say that its worth buying a PS2 just so you can have the experience of playing this game, but I understand the whole world isn't created for football fans. But play Madden 2001 and you might just become one. Imagine watching a football game...now imagine controlling the game on TV. You may scoff, but that's what this game is really like.

The initial impressions are dazzling. .... Dynamic camera angles give you a "receiver's eye view" and to watch a replay on a simple pass completion will give you goosebumps - the ball arc and leap of the receiver are magnificent. .... You see the coaches strut the sideline, scream and shout at players, and throw their hands up in disgust after bad plays...you even get to see them as they jog back to the huddle.

The basic core playability remains the same, with a few new tweaks. You can now select plays based on "The go-to guy". .... Also, there is the "ask the coach" feature, which allows you to query the coach for the option as to what you should do on the next play. ....

There are flaws, of course, as there are in all masterpieces. Although the presentation of the game has improved almost a hundredfold, the play-by-play still blows .... In this rather frosting-like respect, Gameday has always been superior. .... Also, being able to turn around and look at the receivers on both sides with L1 and L2 was a ritual of mine before the snap, but now I have less options to survey the field than before as the camera only backs straight up, which makes it useless in 4- or 5-wide sets.

Some other impressions : The new graphics are definitely killer but the play selection screen is a bit busy, so my guess is it will take seasoned PS1 users a bit of time to get acclimated to the new appearance of the screen and that means a delay of game (or five). Also, there used to be an option to do the bump-and-run on defense right before the snap, which I can't seem to find in this version. Finally, although I only had a chance to play the Ravens, it seems a lot harder to get around the corner than before. In the original PS1 2001 it used to be almost a given that you could do a sweep around the end and get at least 7 or 8 yards, it looks like on the PS2 its a bit tougher to get the run. Oh yeah, I was never able to get formation substitutions to work properly in the PS1 version, but they work great for the PS2, which is key when I want Huntley in the backfield for the shotgun. ....

A Slight Upgrade Over The PS1 Version?

Someone at EB (Electronics Botique) happened to mention that he felt this PS2 version of Madden 2001 is just a slight upgrade over the PS1's offer. I can't really say if that's true, but it would be safe to doubt it. I love my old playstation, but it couldn't render graphics and animation like the PS2's if its life depended on it. And the old memory cards were great, but there's no way they could hold information from the more intensive and demanding PS2 version.

So all I have is what I've seen. This is a very good game--not perfect, but very good. I can't imagine a better game out there that can go toe for toe with this one. Some say Dreamcast's NFL 2k1 is better, and I don't see in what way. That game has some serious holes. Madden 2001 has flaws, too, but they're easier to overlook because everything else about the game is so well executed.

The CPU is hard to stop, especially with the passing game. It's probably too difficult to run, but stopping the computer's ground game is easy. I don't really notice the helmets coming together, or any other graphics anomaly. However, in the book, it's hard to find (I couldn't find it at all) where the button is to go into the no-huddle offense. I've found that holding the triangle down works.

Overall, buy the game. It's not a "must-have" unless you're a sports freak like me. But it's a great entertainer. And if you're into football, it's worth it.
