i just wanted to try to put in a contrast between all the 'this game is such a disappointment' reviews and the 'oh my god -- greatest game ever' reviews. i do own and play both madden 2001 for the ps2 and nfl 2k1 for the dreamcast and overall nfl 2k1 is the better football game. online play and speed is really what put 2k1 over the top.
however, this should not take anything away from madden. graphically, it is just too much fun to watch and i think the running game in madden is much better than 2k1. madden is not as good as 2k1, but it is a great game nonethe less.
if you like football games, this is definitely one to get ... and if you can afford it, get 2k1 also.
great but....

i'm a 22 year old- but i'm not too much in to video gaming. Sports is great especially when you have a bunch of rowdy egotistical friends who think they rule in gmaes. I got the ps2 and madden.
Getting right to the point, Madden and ps2 deliver an altogether different gaming experince. The graphics totlally trancends ps1 and borders on virtual reality with all of its fluidity. Great if you're into football games, but its bad points are only common with all football games that strive for realism: 1) it's passive- it's not like basketball games where the control of players and gameplay is a completely active processs, not that you can't hurdle shake and bake while you're running, but it takes loads of skill that difficult to implement. 2) and this where I'm really upset with the game----you can't control the sound- you can't turn off the broadcasters!! I LOVE playing football games without the annoying broadcasters, just the games myself, friends and the sound of grass or turf crunching as I blaze a trail to vainglory and strike the egos fo those who challenge me. Madden doesn't allow that, an important part of the gaming experice is precluded. Y'all of course will think of this as incidental. ALL in all a great figging game!
Good but....

Nice game, but if you own NFL2K1 for the Dreamcast, this is in no way an improvement over that.
Madden 2001 seems to concentrate on the gfx and game presentation more than the actual gameplay. NFL2K1 is a better technically programmed game.
Good but not *that* good...

This is hyped as the most realistic NFL game out.... However, in my opinion, I gotta admit, the Madden Player models look a bit too 'cartoonish'... i.e. their heads kinda too big for their stuby looking bodies..... Dreamcast NFL2k1 has more proportioned player models... and physics are at par with Madden 2001... plus the controls are a easier in NFL2k1... there's just too many button combination... much more than necessary to keep it fun.... And physics, in Madden2001, as in NFL2k1, have some flaws... in Madden the physics resemble something more near a pinball game... while NFL2k1 are on the opposite spectrum... a bit too "sticky".... yet all in all.... the game is fun for a while, till you start getting headaches for playing too long.... then comes the next day, and it's fun again.... so that's it and that's that.... if you bought a PS2, then you'd probably want to buy this too... no doubt... the good ones are comming....

Why would you get PS2 in the first place. I have PS2 and my bro had DC, and I highly reccomend DC. The games are 1000 times better, along with the playability. PS2 STINKS! Don't get this game, or PS2, get NFL 2K1 and DC, BELIEVE ME!
It's so life-like, you'll think its an actual game on t.v.!

This game is the most realistic a game could get! Their eyes move, the lights from the stadium show on the players helmets, you can create your own player, you get actual Upper Deck trading cards in this game!, the coach walks the sideline and even says things, the crowd chants.......I could go on. YOU WOULD NOT BElIEVE THE GRAPHICS, i'm telling you, its spectacular! Buy it, its the ONE football game that you'll ever need. (soooo much better than NFL 2K1 for Sega)
Amazing

So what if is not out yet, Madden 2001 is and will be the best football game for the PS2. I feel that my thumbs will need medical attention after the launch. Sony The One And Only.

Ok I agree Ps2 Is powerful, and it has a lot of perks. The Dvd is a great feature, and a few of them games look good, but open your eyes. Dreamcast is half the price, and has over 200 good games, over 50 of them are AAA games. As for Madden NFL 2001, It is a good game, I have no doubt, but it is not the best football game. NFL 2k1 for dreamcast has as good as graphics, more options and INTERNET PLAY. With Dreamcast and NFL2k1 You can play anyone anywhere with dreamcast, isn't that a feature that PS2 sure doesn't have. As for the dvd, for the price of PS2 you can buy a dvd player and dreamcast. Oh and by the way, you can actually buy a dreamcast now, unlike the 6-12 month wait for ps2.
Huge leaning curve

I just got my ps2 and Madden2k1. This is my first Playstation. I'm very disappointed at the amount of time it takes to get started actually playing football. The game takes a while to load, and you must go through 3 "loading" screens before you get anywhere. It took forever to figure out how to start a season and pick a team, and longer to figure out how to get anything done. Examples of the difficulty in playing are having the sprint buttons different for offensive versus defensive players. Once you learn everything, you have to relearn it for defense. It is just difficult. It is also very unresponsive to changes in direction when running, offense OR defense. Forget the great cutbacks you affiliate with Stephen Davis and Robert Smith... start a shovel pass to the outside and see a hole open up inside? TOUGH.. trying to cut back will land you right into the oncoming defense - there is no speed there. My main disappointment is the amount of time it takes to begin enjoying the game. Perhaps nerdy little kids with nothing else in their lives will eat it up. I'm also ASSUMING that I can play this head to head over the modem (assuming it has a modem too) or the forthcoming network interface. If I end up missing out on those points too, I will be very let down. Oh yeah - one more thing... realistic expressions? YEAH RIGHT.. if realistic is crummy polygons.... And ONE more thing... Dennis Greene is FAT.. he is NOT the skinny ... guy they show in the game....
