I think that everyone is in agreement that this is probably the best looking football game ever. My only complaints about the game are that the announcing gets a little monotonous and repetitive after awhile. Also, once you're up by a couple of touchdowns, you can pretty much count on the other team to pass about 100% of the time.
If you've been playing the Madden's for the PSX, just think of how much better the game looks now than when it originally came out, then imagine how much better this could potentially look in a few years after EA learns how to push the limits of the hardware.
Game Freezes when trying to play a game!!!!

I purchased this game on May 15, 2001 and I could not play a game. After contacting Sony Support they said a lot of people are having this problem if they have a PS2 from the after Christmas production but a Madden 2001 from before Christmas. You can send your PS2 back to Sony for service, no idea if it is free or not. My choice is to not buy this game and wait for Madden 2002 due out in the fall. Shame on Sony and EASports for having no warning about this on either of their websites. This glitch only affects the Madden 2001 game since it was designed based on a prototype to be one of the first 5 games released. Other than that the PS2 is great.
One word...WHATEVER!

What can you say about this game? The defense is useless. The mighty Damon Huard threw for about 800 yards against me. Like that could happen! The same with future Hall Of Fame QB's John Kitna & Chris Chandler (sarcasm). These QB's are rattling off 10 consecutive completions. Yeah, sure! I have never seen an NFL game where some nasty QB has thrown for almost 1000 yards...and get shut out. I can start out dominating on defense. Then all of a sudden the CPU decides it's time to make me sorry for buying the game. Completing passes at will left and right. And my defense can do nothing. They can't run though. I've playing three seasons and in each one I've held the other teams to negative rushing yards. I've found a secret. Put one of your linebackers between the center and the RG. Hold down the down button and keep your finger hovering above the tackle button. As soon as the ball is snapped keep your thumb on the down button and hit the left button and the tackle button to sack the QB. It works for me almost every time. I usually end up with about 30-40 sacks a game if not more. I don't have a problem putting points on the board. I usually max out the score at 255 when I play 15 minute quarters. But my QB (who I created) can't seem to complete more than 66% of his passes to his receivers (which I also created). If you're going to pass make sure the ball doesn't hit your WR's in the hands...it's a bad spot. If I made these guys so good why are they so bad. Maybe the PS2 doesn't want them to be good. I love when a ball is going to a receiver and he stands there and looks at it as it hits him in the leg of hits the ground. I also love when you watch a replay and see that the ball actually went through your CB's hand and into the hands of the WR he was defending. And it's great when you hit the QB and he is on his way down for the sack, but he releases the ball. The nose of the ball is headed straight for the ground when it takes an upward turn and flies 30 yards down the field and into the hands of his receiver. Very realistic! NOT! Basically don't buy this game unless you want to have the snot beat out of you in the passing yards categoty. Their QB's cannot be stopped unless you sack them every time!
Stood in line for hours... no dissappointment!

First of all, this is a must buy for your new Playstation2. It is one of the few games that really exploits the units power. Compared to Madden 2001 on the PC, this game is pretty close. Gameplay is awesome. Highly recommended.
This truly is an amazing game!

If you own a Playstation 2 you must buy this game. I just purchased one yesterday and this was the first game I bought. The graphics are just simply amazing and so is the gameplay. This is a great first game to start off your Playstation 2 collection with. If you liked the other Madden's then you will love this one. The best part is that my man, Eddie George, number 27 of the Titans is on the cover. Pick up this game, you won't be dissapointed!

Okay, so I only own three, but Madden rocks. It's easy to learn (and I don't play video games) and challenging. The commentary is kinda annoying and repetitive, and the music is disapointing(a bad Xzibit song and the Beatnuts), but the game is fun. Go Vikings!
fun game even for non football fans

Then why dont you have this already? This is a must for the Playstation 2!! Madden 2001 is truly taking you farther into the game than any other game has to this point. The players textures, accesories and animations are the closest to real players as you get. The 3 dimentional stadiums are eyecandy. No more paper thin fans cheering you on. They have even put in instant replay for those questionable calls. Sick of those perfect game conditions? Push your senses to the limit and run your offense through a bilzzard and fog in...ARIZONA?! This game makes you work for your yards. Run a creative offense or miss the playoffs. Its as close to the real thing as you want to be...
