Jak II - An excellent example of fine platforming action

5 Rating: 5, Useful: 1 / 1

Jak II, the minute I heard of a sequel to the ever so excellent Jak and Daxter I was immedietly excited. Jak II delivered what I expected and more! Jak II is an excellent example of a platformer but it expands on platforming and takes on other genres such as action, racing, and a new mission based format. All of these are pulled off without a hitch. The weapons in the game fit perfectly into the Jak II world, they never feel out of place. The voice acting and music is also very excellent, as always. Jak nows talks and Daxter is still the comic "Ottsel" sidekick he always has been since the first adventure. The music also is epic, the boss battles are extroadinary and the music fits perfectly into what is happening. The only minor problem with Jak II is the upped difficutly level. Sometimes missions can be too hard and if you had trouble with the first Jak and Daxter expect fustrastion in this adventure. But, while it is challening, it also is refreshing to see the game move into a more "mature" adventure. Although the game is not that mature, there are still dark elements to the game that are much diffrent than the first "cutesy" Jak and Daxter. ALl in all, Jak II is the perfect example of a game that mixes elements of other genres without a hitch. The racing in the game feels like racing, the action is intense mixed in with the finely crafted platforming mixed in there as well which is balanced equally. This game is well worth the $40, a platformer-action fan or not, Jak II is one of the finest games crafted this year!

An Excellent Title, Though Sometimes Hard and Frustrating

When I first went out to buy this game, I was completely excited. I had read several reviews regarding it, and all of them were positive. On top of that, I had played Jak and Daxter before, which was very good itself.

When I opened up the game to play it, however, I was met with dissapointment. No, it's not what you think, the game ended up being fine. But my PS2 was one of the older ones that doesn't play certain games. No matter what I did, nothing worked (trust me, I tried everything). So I sent my PS2 in to be repaired-- it's free, by the way--, and when I got it back, Jak II was the first thing I played. Enough of that tangent...

Playing Jak II, after that long wait, was bliss. The game is so well crafted by Naughty Dog that it's amazing.

The graphics are some of the best we've seen on the PS2 so far. Everything and everyone is modeled painstakingly, and there are no obvious repeating building textures or flat drawn-in backrounds. The game also sports an artistic flair, and each section of the city is unique and pleasing to the eye, as are the various vehicles taht Jak and steal at any time. In addition to the vast (sometimes too vast) city, there are several equally beautiful other outdoor or indoor areas. One such area, the forest, is simply breathtaking. You have to play to game to appreciate those graphics.

The next area where Jak II succeeds is in gameplay. The game noticeably incorporates several genres, and you can notice parts of specific games in each part of it. You can spot bits of GTA, Tony Hawk, and Ratchet and Clank all in Jak II, and each part of comes together to make a well rounded action-adventure.

The only part that some people may dislike about this game is the difficulty, as many have said. The learning curve is incredibly steep, and by the tenth or so mission (there are tons, so that's about 5% through the game), you may have already been ready to quit. I know I was. After a while, after you think you've got the hang of everyting, the game intoduces a particularly hard concept or mission that takes anywhere from five to twenty tries to get right. It's particularily frustrating when the 'redo' points are spaced far apart, and you are almost done, but then you fail and have to try over again. I can remember on a least one occasion, after I had suffered a particularly frustrating death, saying "f*ck this" and walking away. Of course, there is a positive side to the difficulty; when you finnally do beat that b*tch of a mission, the sense of accomplishment is extremely rewarding. It's moments like that that make you want to keep playing the game.

To tie the whole game together, there is a great plot. There are plenty of twists and unique, interesting characters to keep you interested from a dramatic viewpoint, and the plot effects the structure of the game as well (especially later, near the end of the game when the wall breaks down.

All in all, this is a near perfect game. You know you're playing a great game when one moment you can be frustrated enough to smash your controller, and the next you can be dancing with joy. Jak II is just that good.

Jak II is a great game for starters. It mixes shooting, platform-jumping, hovercraft driving into one clever little package. The ottsel, Daxter, has plenty of comic relief( and plenty more for the fat man floating around in his chair). Jak goes to the future with his friends accidentaly. He is arrested by gaurds and endures 2 years of terrifying Dark Eco experiments upon his body. At the end of those two years, Daxter arrives to free him. The rest of the game is about dethroning the baron, helping the Underground, working for Krew, and other such interesting things.

I quite enjoyed the game as it turned out to be so much better than I expected to be. I very much enjoy the fact that there still much to do even after beating the game, well that is to say beating the last boss, I have not yet found all 200 P.O.'s
There are a number of extra "secrets that are unlocked after collecting certain numbers of Precursor Orbs. Prec. Orbs are also much more rare in JakII. Exactly one tenth the number of orbs that are in Jak and Daxter. I liked that fact. I also enjoyed a great number of cutscenes, and I was really pleased that the game crew put a "scene viewer" in the secrets to be unlocked.

The only thing I did NOT like about Jak II, was that it takes too long to collect enough Dark Eco to transform into Dark Jak. But there is an "unlimited Dark Jak" that you can unlock later.
That was very enjoyable when I found that out. Well I cannot think of anything else to tell you about it so good bye. BR> Stephen Jennings

jak 2 a must have for your playstation 2

jak 2 is awesome. ive never been so intrested in a game before. you first land in a fantastic gta inspired hubworld called havencity. although its one city and not a collection of diffrent areas. diffrent parts of the city can be accesed after you obtain certain items. while youre at the city you can choose to go about with your regular missions steal veichles or beat up people. but be careful assault a pedestrian in front of a gaurd and its alarmtime!. THE STORYLINE IS VERY INTRESTING AND COMPELLING. FULL OF MOTION PCTURE LIKE STINTS AND EXCITING TWISTS AND TURNS. when you get to krew about 10 percent into the game hell give you a gun. jak gets tons of upgrades for the gun. he also gets 3 more guns including the astounding peacemaker. the graphics in the game are simply beautifal. youll have a HARD time looking away. jak 2 is among the best games on playstation 2 and should be purchased played and loved.

5 star game!!!!

Jak goe through a rift and ends up way in the future. You are in haven city. In the beginning Jak and daxter get seperated. 2 years later dax breaks jak out of prison. This game is very different than the first. for example jak talks alot in this game so in other words he isnt a mute anymore. You get alot of "friends"and enemys in this game. They have very strange names like
Torn
Sig
Krew
Brutter
Keira
Baron Praxis
Erol
Samos
Young Jak
Young Samos
Anyways this is a fun and occasionally challenging game. LIke in hero mide I found one part where you have to shoot krimson gaurds in a turrett. Oh and in heero mode if you get 200 percursor orbs you unlock mega scrap book. its like the normal scrap book except much bigger. Oh and parents if your kids say they want this game you might want to think about it. I would say its for 12+. a good substitute would be Ratchet and clank 8+ Ratchet and clank goin commando 7+ Ratchet and clank up your arsenal 11+ or Ratchet Deadlocked 10+. wich are all 5 star games

jak and dax are back at it and better than ever!

WOW! This is like the greatest game ever! It is really addicting and long. I have been playing this game for a total of 46 hours and i still have 2% of the game left. The story line is far better than the one for the precursor legacy (jak 1 for those who havent played it)you play right into the story and it keeps you wondering what will happen next. This game is really fun, extremely addicting, and at times even frustrating and challenging. So if you are looking for a game to keep you busy and wanting more this is the game for you!

Really Fun!

I love this game! You can do anything you want from the first game in Jak II, and so much more! Daxter is now funny and not just annoying, and Jak actually talks!! OMG!!!
sure, it's hard at times, and a bit more violent, but it's rated for teens isn't it?

One of my favorite parts is the secrets. in the first game, collecting was what it was all about, but in this game, it just unlocks some really neat stuff! there are 286 precurser orbs in this game, but you only need 200 to unlock all the secrets. the secrets range from unlimited ammo/dark jak to unlimited health!

If you have lots of trouble with this game, try to get 200 orbs to unlock "Hero Mode". this is the same as the regular game except you start out with ALL your guns and the difficulty is jacked up a bit, but you get an ALL NEW secrets list, so you can ulock unlimited health after getting only about 35 orbs!! also in "Hero Mode" the metal-heads ALWAYS drop skull gems, so you can enter a place, kill the enemies, collect the skull gems, and repeat as many times as you want at the same place!! KAWAII!

Great Game!!!

This game is the best. I was reluctant to buy it because I thought it would be a little kids game, but I was wrong. The like how they took some things from GTA. Also the graphics are great, the sound is great, and the controls are easy to learn. The only thing I didn't like was how hard the levels were. For me I had to replay a level 4 or 5 times before I finally found a way to beat it. Overall it's a great game and with the reduced price, you should buy it right away.

better than the last one.
