This is one of the best games I have ever played on Playstation 2 or any other system. It has action, adventure , mystery. You just can't stop playing once you start. I must warned you that this game is very addictive, so take it easy. I usually rent a game before deciding to buy it or not. Not with GOW. I trusted in peoples comments in the street (which is not wise) and bought it with my eyes close. And it turned out to be one of the few games that I don't feel dissapointed in purchasing.I finished it in about a month and a half (I got things to do, like a job you know)unlike most people that would probably finish it in less time. I finished it twice already, and planning to give it another shot in a few weeks. The sequel is great too. Can't wait for part III. Have fun and enjoy.
Incredible...Just Incredible!!!!

As a longtime fan and reader of Greek mythology, I found this game impossible to resist when a friend loaned me his copy. Since he did, I have been addicted to it!! It is by far the best fighting game for PS2!! Not to mention the score and graphics are phenomenal!!! I LOVE this game, if I haven't said so already and I highly recommend that PS2 collectors purchase it as part of their (soon to be defunct) PS2 collection. It's well worth the money!! I think what's really cool about this game is that I am female and I'm fascinated with it. It's really a GREAT game!!
God of War, SWEET!

My PS2 was collecting dust for the better part of a year, only roused on occasion to watch a movie in bed. But this game changed that!
Not sure what made me buy this game, I just saw it and thought it looked like something I would enjoy. And I was right! It became a near obsession! I'm glad I had a long weekend to play it, I was hooked from beginning to end. This is in all honestly, as another reviewer said, a near perfect game. The visuals in the game are EXCELLENT. The game play looks as good as the animated cut scenes. The story is unique, intriguing and even though Kratos (your character) has a rough past and uses extreme violence and shows little mercy to anyone, you WANT him to succeed if just to see how much punishment he can meet out to his foes and how much he can take in return. To be apart of his journey, for and against the Gods of Olympus, makes you feel like you want to grab up a weapon and fight alongside him. (But he'd probably just use you as a human shield to accomplish his own goals!)
Anyway, the controls are great. Not much of a learning curve. Kratos is a skilled Warrior and dispatches his enemies with a slew of sweet moves and several different weapon types. Each weapon can be powered up. Kratos can also learn some powerful Spell Effects that come in handy. You can "chain" his moves together to create critical combos. And many of his enemies die spectacularly with lots of pain! The level of detail in the graphics is SUPERB, the music and sound effects fit perfectly. Puzzles are mind bending (i.e. inside Pandora's Box) yet completely within your grasp to solve. The campaign / story is compelling and will make you root for Kratos to shed the blood of his foes!
I recommend this game to adult gamers who enjoy lots of action and puzzles, the Greek mythology is just cool.
Be aware, there is nudity in the game, this is not a gift for kids. There is also extreme violence and blood, including violence against women and children in some of the cut scenes.
Best Game on PS2!

I've played all the best reviewed games on PS2 and this was the winner by far. The action is spectacular, while the story line is good enough that you feel a reason to keep playing other than the thirst for some more action. Probably not appropiate for young Jimmy or Trisha, but fine for middle aged teens. Buy now, while its this cheap.
best game I've played for awhile

It has probably been about ten years since I've enjoyed a video game as much as I have enjoyed Gods of War. The graphics, sound, gameplay are excellent- however the fun factor makes this game great! This is one of the rare games you won't be able to stop playing until you have mastered it.

The greek culture and the stories acient greeks came up with to understand their existence fascinates me. God of War completely builds itself around that train of thought ancient greeks left behind. The Minotaurs,Cyclops, Cerberus, Zues, Hades, Poseiden, Athena, Satyrs, etc... All these things in this game make it seem like this was a story told long ago and made into a videogame. This game and the upcoming God of War 2 which is released today will be the last great PS2 games to end the 6 year reign of the PS2.
What is it that gives this game good Marks.....Lets talk about creativity, character and story wise. Kratos is a fictional character created to further the history of ancient greeks. He is a fierce spartan warrior that has sold his soul to ARES, the god war, to maintain his prideful right as the most ruthless warrior. As told by ancient greeks, the Gods were tricky and ruthless themselves, also playing and manipulating the lives of humans. Naturally the same happens with Kratos where he is tricked throughout one of his battles for ARES and kills his Family Accidentally. ARES felt it was the best thing for him to do to throw out any feelings Kratos had so that he can be the ultimate warrior. From here we have an epic adventure involving you fighting legendary creatures told in Greek culture to exact revenge against ARES and if need it be as far as all the gods. The Creatures are so uniquely designed in this game and scaled massively at times that you'd swear thats how they looked if the Fictional ancient greece were real. The story mends all of these creatures together to form an all new story that can be thrown in with the rest of ancient greek documents and stories. The famous tale of the PANDORA's BOX is thrown in to further story and help you exact your revenge when the time comes. Two of the best created creatures was HYDRA and ARES themselves. Both look menacing and evil as the titles and stories put behind them. The enemies you fight were created well but you end up fighting them repeatedly throughout the game. One Character i found that wasnt repeated quite often were the "Half Man/half Horse" creatures(Sorry forgot the Name), if anything you saw them at least 3 times in the game. Unfortunately their arent alot of spectacular bosses in the game considering the many gods and creatures that ancient grecians mentioned in stories.
Gameplay was so simple and to the point. Controlling Kratos himself was with the Left analog stick, and the right analog stick were dodge moves. Combat was a matter of holding down some buttons and pressing others to form more combinations. As you leveled up, your blades of chaos and magic powers, you would get a list of even more button combinations to vary the combo ballet you would form. Many combos existed but the one thing that looked a tiny bit awkward, to me, is that the combos looked as if they could not link fluidly. Their would be this split second where you could tell the computer had to pause kratos to start another combo but nonetheless everything responded very quickly. I just thought a game like this would have everything link 2gether to look more graceful. It was no bid deal anyway. Boss Fights were very limited to the same combos that were given, but when given the chance to grab on to a boss or an enemy the game would engage to a mini game, similar to the dance dance games, were you would have to press the correct button that lighted on top of the enemy. What would happen after every press of the button is a spectacular midair move to cause more damage to the enemy. But I often felt i wasnt doin much to the enemy but hurting him till he gets dizzy so i could grab him and do the same minigame. It wasnt annoyin but i thought it could have been more frantic and more involved. Unfortunatly the same minigame system has been kept in GOD OF WAR 2. Overall everything is top notch. The things i mention are just small quirky things that i noticed along with other people.
Puzzle wise, I found the game to be decently challenging and it did not need to be harder. Some people found the puzzle with the rotating spikes, in Hades, to be hard as hell. For me the thing was to keep moving and take advantage of every open spot that the spike Column would give me. Yea i fell plenty of times but I got it very quickly.
Difficulty on the game at the Hard level was ok. The only problem I had with the hard difficulty is the last fight with the copies of the multiple Kratos's to defend the wife and kid. Damn was that crap hard with the difficulty that high. After finally being able to beat it and putting it on God Mode, God mode was a cake walk till i got to that last level to defeat the multiple Kratos's. NOW I CANT BEAT THE DAMN LEVEL....LOL. SOME ONE HELP!
Other than that the game is solid. I think i touched on the fine points of the game on this review. I totally recommend this game along with GOD OF WAR 2. Get them both and play the last great games of the PS2. 5, 10, 20, 100 thumbs up.
HAPPY GAMING AMIGOS

This is another game which re-invents the wheel so well that people forget that they've played better games before. It's very pretty, very loud, very violent...very all the things people like in games these days.
At the same time it's camera is practically non-existent, it's controls are just okay, and the combat consists of as much button-smashing as you can whittle together. Sure, there are combos, but there's nothing particularly different about the way I play this and the way my niece "Smash all the buttons at once" plays this. By the time I advance far enough into the game where this starts to become more strategic, I'm already bored.
If you're into the linear big boss fights-type stuff, knock yourself out. Me? I had more fun (and better control of the game) playing Psi-Ops and GTA. This is like a platformer on steroids. Very large, nigh-unswallowable steroids.
Sidenote: T.C. Carson does the lead voice, and sounds good.
No matter how often you reinvent the wheel, it's still round.

God of War is just another beat-em-up in a long line of such games. I'm always mystified as to why games that get showered with accolades manage to garner such attention. Supposedly set in ancient Greece, the game's settings mostly bear resemblance to Greek mythology in the way "First Knight" or "King Arthur" resembled Arthurian legend, the Hercules TV show with Kevin Sorbo resembled Greek/Roman legend, or American McGee's "Alice" resembled "Alice in Wonderland." That is to say, you'll recognize some influences and names, but ultimately not a lot of real ties to the works that inspired it. ("Alice," however, was actually intended to be a twisted version, and did so quite expertly.) The PS2 Rygar manages to capture a feeling of ancient Greece better than God of War.
Admittedly, GoW is visually impressive. The animations run smoothly, but while this game is hailed as pushing the capacity of the PS2, I didn't see anything I haven't seen in other games. On the downside, you're not able to really look around to take in the work that went into the level design.
While you do acquire new moves and combos, most of the fighting will be a matter of using one or two moves repeatedly. Enemies tend to swarm over you, so fancy combos won't do you a lot of good, because they get interrupted when one of the many enemies attacks you. Compared to something Devil May Cry 1 or 3, the combos have none of the finesse that Dante had, or any of the brutality the game claimed to present.
The game designers claim that the game is epic in scope, and while the environments do run together pretty well, you'll notice a lot of similar elements in each one. There'll be your usual block puzzles, jumping puzzles, and timing puzzles in each one. Each area also has an obligatory "cross the beams" area. This repetition of elements makes the diverse environments seem a little too similar, and while the lush graphics may knock your socks off, you'll soon feel like you've seen it all before.
The game has mostly a handful of baddies - zombie soldiers, gorgons, harpies, archers, minotaurs, and a few cyclops, sirens, and centaurs scattered here and there. These enemies keep popping up in each environment with a few colors changed and a few more hits required to defeat them. Most have a fatality combo that can be performed, but once you've seen an enemy's fatality a few times, it gets old and you'll only use them to release the health or magic reserves performing the fatality unlocks. Combat really interrupts the flow of the game, since often an area will be sealed with a "magic field" (a la Devil May Cry) until you defeat all of the villains in an area. Mostly you'll mash away on the light and heavy attack buttons in an attempt to get that area's fighting over and done with so you can move on. You may even find yourself wishing there was a way to skip the combat completely.
The story is fairly straighforward, and you really don't feel any empathy for Kratos as you did for, say, Raziel in the Soul Reaver series. Ultimately, the story tries to present a tale tragedy, but you wind up just not caring. As much as I enjoy a tragic protagonist, any time the story was advanced or Kratos' history revealed, I found myself thinking "blah blah blah... who cares?"
This game proves that no matter how many times the wheel is reinvented, it's still round. While it has a little more spit and polish than some platforming beat-em-ups, and a LOT more hype, it still pretty much blurs in with the other forgettable button mashers. For some good, brutal gameplay with a story that is actually compelling, try Legacy of Kain: Defiance. If you are not familiar with the story, try Soul Reaver I and II first, as these brilliantly set the stage for Defiance. Also try Devil May Cry 1 and 3.
God of War is, at best, a rental. It can be beaten in about 3 days and you're not out $20.
