The most amazing game I have ever played, HANDS DOWN!

"God Of War" has brought the Action-Adventure genre to a whole new level and it looks almost unbeatable. With perfect graphics, an amazing storyline, tons of playability, intriguing and memorable puzzles, and its fascinating and accurate ties to Greek mythology help make this game the best game ever created. Anybody can pick this game up and learn how to play it in seconds; it is EXTREMELY player-friendly. Hell, even the music is great!

As an awesome bonus, the game comes with a "Treasures" menu, which includes a documentary of the game's creation, trailers, deleted levels, and lots of other cool goodies and unlockables.

Similar games like the "Devil May Cry" series, "Prince Of Persia", and others don't even come close to this game. This is worth getting the PS2 for!! BUY THIS GAME ALREADY! What are you waiting for?! I can tell you what I'm waiting for...A SEQUEL!!!

God of action games!!

First off, I am 23 years old and I'm using the kid's review simply because it's easier.

I got this game a year ago and i finally beat it today. I started playing this game as soon as i got it and i was simply blown away with the graphics! Now, i dont think graphics are the main reason to get a game, but since this game is just flawless in general, it is a huge part of this game. The environments are breathtaking! I must have said "wow" a billion times while playing this game. Also, the shear size of this game is incredible! You fight all through a huge Athens to Pandora's Temple, then make your way back to Athens to battle Ares. Sounds pretty simple, huh. Nope! You will be amazed at the size of Pandora's temple! You have to buy or play this game to find out.

My only complaint about this game would be how long it takes to defeat some of the enemies, and the amount they throw at you, but its not really a big deal. This game was Game of the Year for a reason, they are hardly any flaws. Oh, and sometimes the camera angles can really screw you up. The camera is sort of cinematic and you have no control over it. Sometimes walking on logs and trying to balance can be a huge pain in the rear.

If i could compare this game to something else, it would have to be The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time. It's got that epic feeling. You really feel like you are accomplishing something in this game. But this is no kid's game like Zelda, and i dont want to really compare this game to anything because it is a game of its own. This will be a long lasting franchise, especially with God of War 2 coming out in a month[...] I cannot wait for that game to come out!

Do yourself a favor, buy this game! It is only 19.99 in stores and that is one heck of a deal! This is one of those games you will play and remember forever!

GOD OF WAR IS SIMPLY BRILLIANT

As a gamer in Lagos Nigeria, it's only few games that make me leave the hectic life here and take time to pay my respects to this brilliant game. God Of War takes u on one man's journey through ancient Greece in order to exact revenge on the Greek God of War, Aries. Rite from the opening minutes of the game, gamers will realise that they're in for something entirely different and unique. The main character, Kratos is a warrior who on the verge of losing his life in a battle cries out to Aries (the greek god of war) to safe his life. in exchange he plegdes his soul to the sinister God who proceeds to carve Kratos into the most brutal warrior alive. On one of his brutal campaigns, Kratos commits an abominable deed and then realises that he has turned into something less than human. In this moment of clarity, he decides that he has to kill the God of war to atone for his sins. this ladies and gentlemen is where this epic tale kicks off...

For starters the gameplay is original and easy to get used to. u'll get a sadistic blast ripping, slashing and hackin away at the hordes of enemies u come up against. For those into Greek Mythology, Kratos clearly make Hercules look like a priest when it comes to battle. the brilliant score adds to the overall feel of being in ancient Greece, the camera switces between action sequences and exploration seamlessly, adding a dramatic feeling to the whole experience. u'll love when the camera pans overhead, letting u view the whole breathtaking scenery. did i mention how incredible the graphics are both in real time and movie sequences.

Finally the game has a lotta replay value as there are items available only after u beat the game once and in God Mode (Very hard). as if replaying the game just for the fun of it wasnt enough.

My mom keeps begging me to leave the T.v and join the family of man cuz simply put this game is addictive. any self-respecting ps2 owner has got to get this game!!!!!!

This isn't the 2nd coming people, but it's still worth a try

It always happens with games. A game comes out that is on everyone's top 10 list, it's practically raved about and you try it and you sit there going "so when's the awesomeness going to kick in?". God of War to me is pretty much the only game I'm interested in right now(besides Jade Empire and Conker but I don't have an Xbox) so I tried it out and it's not the greatest game ever, but it's still fun for what it is.

Story: Kratos, this pale, scar-riddled man takes a plunge off Mount Olympus as he can't deal with his inner demons any more. The narrator decides to show you what led him to do this. 3 weeks earlier, Kratos was giving a mission: defeat the god Ares and the troubles and nightmares of Kratos past will be relieved.

Graphics: It's funny when people say it looks like an Xbox title cause while I don't find a lot of Xbox games to get excited over, their graphical capabilities are quite a force. God of War has nice pretty polished graphics. It also nicely details the gruesome deaths you're likely to unleash on your enemies.

Sound/Music: The soundtrack is sweet. Big epic scores worthy of a Hollywood score. The voice acting is alright, whoever did Kratos does his part well but it's not a huge standout that made me laugh and emphasize with him like Prince of Persia.

Gameplay: To me, it's pretty much a Devil May Cry style engine but with different attacks and spells and graphics set to a greek mythology view rather than a dark gothic look. You got 2 main attacks: medium and strong which you'll be pretty much going back and forth throughout the game. When you grab you have 3 options: square stabs the enemy and throws him around the room and possibly hitting the others; triangle is the more gruesome as Kratos grabs his enemy's waist and rips the guy in 2 while circle just throws him to the ground and repeatedly stabs him. You get new attacks as you upgrade DMC style like uppercuts and rush attacks.

You also get magic spells like Zeus's lightning or the ability to hold Medusa's head and shine it on enemies turning them to stone than shattering them. Boss fights are quite a thing to see...the little you see of them anyway. Also extremely cool is that certain enemies have different death options. Some enemies only have the aforementioned button ones but some are unique and equally gruesome. The minotaur death is where you have to press O repeatedly, if you get it, you stab him right through the mouth. You can rip the wings off these bat guys or rip the arm off this other one and beat him to death. This is definately not one for the kiddies.

It's not revolutionary as a game title and it's certainly not the best thing in gaming but still if you're looking for something, can't go wrong with this.

It's a great game, BUT...

I remembered seeing ads for this game on TV, but I'm not the kind of person to buy games at full price when they just come out (unless it's Halo/Grand Theft Auto). However, my cousin was raving about the game to me and how he had just beat it, and so I decided to borrow it from him and see what it was all about.

Firstly the good...This IS a very good game. It is addictive, the game play is very well done; the puzzles and fight modes are interesting and challenging, the opponents are varied and don't mess around on higher difficulties. There are a lot of boob shots in certain points in the game, so this should probably cause more of a ruckus than the GTA issues but who knows what goes on in the minds of our nation's moral guardians . The lack of camera control takes a while to get used to, and while some of the puzzles may seem frustrating, it is not TOO hard to solve them. I only asked for help once, and was able to figure the rest of them out on my own. Kratos is an interesting character...I can't say I was rooting for him ("the gods demand a sacrifice" and you just fry the guy like that???but I was interested in following the story to see what led up to his beginning statements and what would happen afterwards. I had a great time playing this game, i had to draw myself away from the TV when playing it and I felt great when I finally beat it, even if it was on easy.

Now the bad.

The replay value is not good at all. Once I beat the game, I was at least hoping that if I could start the game over on a higher level, i'd have the Blades of Athena and all the experience I had when I finished the game. Nuh-uh! You start over from scratch, and do the second verse, same as the first. Same puzzles, same story, just harder enemies. That doesn't qualify as good replay to me...

If you are a hard core gamer, then play it on Spartan or God mode, even if you are just playing it for the first time. I am not a hard-core person, I was playing it for the story and for fun, so I played it on Easy and beat it within a week. I bet that you would do it even quicker and that wouln't be much fun. Easy mode was much too easy.

To me, this game was like a movie. Good story and action, and I would check out the sequel when it comes out. However, I wouldn't pay new price for this game or the sequel, since it's just like a movie. One watch/play, and you don't need to play it again unless you forgot how it went.

sex and blood and stuff WEEEEEWEE!!!!!

One of the best ps2 games ever

First this is one of the best games ever for the ps2 if not the best game ever for the ps2. This game has the best graphics ever on the ps2 and I didnt even know that the ps2 could have this good of graphics but this game proved me wrong and beats almost any game that has come out this year. Resident Evil 4 and this game will probably be close to game of the year but so far I would say that god of war beats anything. Devil may cry 3 was also a good game that came out this year but its really really hard. Back to god of war amazing visuals great audio as well that fits the game perfect any other music could have caused this game to sound horrible. When you pick up monsters and just rip them apart it is one of the funnest things ever and will be amusing for hours and hours. You should have a great time with this game if you buy it and trust me it is well worth the $50 dollars and you will never ever regret buying this game. I recomend this game to any gamer that has a ps2 and that is old enough to play it. So go out and buy the game and have a blast!!

Hmmm

To the guy below that had a problem loading it on 4 PS2s, maybe it's your copy of the game that's damaged... searching for common problems for God of War (on Google) does not bring up inability to load on older PS2s.

UnGODly!!!

God of War is probably one of the most entertaining games I've played this year, it features amazing visuals never seen before on PS2, good controls and ALOT of different ways to kill your foes as the ungodly Kratos, who happends to be the main character in this game. God of War has gotten quite alot of hype which got me thinking "is the game really THAT good"? So I decided to rent the game and I must say, It IS a bit overrated but the game is overall a winner. God of War features awesome platforming and alot of array of different combos to kill your enemies. One awesome thing about this game is the contex sensitive parts were you have to hit a bunch of buttons that appear on screen and lead the main character to do some pretty nasty stuff. The Platforming never gets old and the puzzle are acctually...GREAT!!! Simple and at the same time abit frustraiting. There are alot of awesome memerable moments in the game like the very beginning where you have to fight the hydra, that part was freaking awesome! The controls are just great, and they fit well for every combo button, did I mention there is ALOT of em'?? But of course, you have to unlock most of them. Other then great visuals, great controls, the SOUND is like listening to a soundtrack from a motion picture, it's THAT GOOD... Lets get to it...

The Good
-Best looking Ps2 game so far
-Great Controls
-Awesome Voice Overs
-Classic Puzzles, Platforming
-awesome combos/upgrades/weapons to gain
-A great storyline

The Bad
-A bit overhyped
-Game is TOO short!!!
-Did I mentionit's TOO SHORT!!!...Devil May Cry 3 takes like almost20 hours!!!...this is about......8 hours?....

I also forgot...this game is VERY MATURE!!..It contains full Nudity, Sexual Content, Extreame Violence and is really for people ages 17 and up....

Other then that God of War is a great yet very short action adventure game that should suit well for people new and no so new, I've mentioned already the great things about this game above so I'll just cut to the chase....God of War for the PS2 gets a..

4.5 out of 5....

A TRUE Action/Adventure Game

God of War is easily one of the greatest games of the year. Acclaimed by both critics and fans, I see countless sequels of this one to come, and here's why:

Eyes and Ears: 4.5/5: God of War has some of the best graphics on the PS2. While other games are muddled with blurry effects and shoddy sounds. GOW's visuals are absolutely crystal clear and razor-sharp. Just bring up our hero Kratos to the screen and take a look at him alone, the detail is astounding. If there was one downfall to the visuals it would have to be when fights get intense and many enemies gather onscreen. Sometimes the camera can pan too far back and actually finding where you're hitting takes second guessing. This usually goes away in a few seconds though. Also, frame rates can get a TAD slow when there is too much on screen at one time... this again is just nitpicking though given the rest of the amazing quality - like huge worlds, beautiful fire and special effects and great distance sight. Keep in mind though that the camera is self working, therefore control it you cannot. No matter though, because the game developers have made sure to give you the best possible angle on every battle and every step along the way. Therefore you won't care that you can't control it, trust me.
Sounds are great too, every whap and slice of enemies is gruesomely audible and morbidly self-fulfilling. There is nothing funner than grabbing a bad guy and pushing the O-button to tear him in half and listening to that body tear. Magic spells are nice and loud, and though the music fits the adventure and each situation perfectly, it's not the type of music quality you'd want to go out and buy a soundtrack for (like say, PS1's Castlevania: SOTN).

Hands: 5/5: You couldn't DREAM of tighter controls. Kratos's adventure takes lots of fast moves and quick decisions, and thankfully enough the developers have made it that much easier by not screwing us over with so much as a small step below stellar. During this, you'll need EVERY button and almost every powerup if you want to survive, so there's plenty of variety, and more than you know what to do with in one playthough. The combo integration is fantastic also. As you move along your adventure, you'll aquire experience points to bring about newer and more deadlier combos, stronger magical powers, and a stronger Kratos overall. As to which magic powers you'll want to update with your experience is up to you, but by the last hour of the game you'll have aquired just about everything.

Brains: 4/5: While Kratos' journey to destroy Ares, the god of war, and avenge his family's isn't the most original idea in the world, the fact that we get to know Kratos better and better with various (beautiful and bloodsplattering) cinematic cut scenes thoughout our adventure gives us a better appreciation for the story and character development overall. You don't learn everything about this one person in the opening sequence as you would most games, we don't really know anything about him at first, but learn as we go along - and all the better. Therefore while the story is typical, the presentation of it makes it a completely non-issue.
While puzzles in the game are quite easy to figure out, I became appreciative of it, only because GOW is about EMPOWERMENT, and empowered you'll become without hair-pulling brain teasers to slow you down. A TRUE action/adventure game this surely is. And a beautifully bloody one at that. On top of that, you've gotta love the minigames. When an enemy becomes weak, a button icon will appear above their heads. You can choose to either finish him off with more swipes, or you can play a game of Simon while Kratos takes him out in some uniquely cool way. Again, the variety of methods and choice of moves in this game is astounding. Keep in mind though that the game is pretty linear and there's very little to NO backtracking... like I said, this ain't no RPG or Resident Evil.

Hormones: 5/5: Fun, fun, fun. Though during the first stage or two you'll be wondering what everyone is drueling over, don't fret. You don't really KNOW Kratos or what you're realy up to then. But play it further and you'll cheer him on during the following levels. I would say this is easily one of the funnest games I've played in years, and recommend it to ANYONE. Though the game would take the average experienced adventure gamer about 10-11 hrs to beat, it's QUALITY, NOT QUANTITY that matters. I've played games that have been 20 or more hours that are not nearly as fun as this one. And considering all the unlockable "making-of" treats you'll get once the game is beaten and MORE after the game is beaten on God level (which im too afraid to try) you'll probably be playing through this more than once.

Overall: 5/5: Genious character development, empowering and cheer inducing gameplay, crisp and incredibly clean graphics? how can you go wrong? this is well worth every cent of those $50 you'll toss down for it. Game of the year in my opinion.
