I did have a problem with killing the Hydra but finally managed to push the button in the right way. This is a common glitch for many owners of this game. I'm not sure what the problem was but I am just glad that I didn't have to search for an original version of this game, buy a new controller or a new console. If you have a problem with the Hydra killing, I can only inform you that I rested the controller on a hard cover book instead of my lap and pushed away. This game is pure macho fighting fun. It doesn't have any creepy elements like Devil May Cry or weird noises.
My 2 cents

Every once in a while there are games that make you step back and make you say "WOW!!". God Of War IS such a game. Even though it's relatively early, I think we are looking at a serious candidate for game of the year for 2005.
In God of War you play as Kratos. A Spartan Warrior who is in service to the Gods of Olympus. He is betrayed by Ares, the god of war who is leading an onslaught against the city of Athens.
The first thing that strikes you about God of War is it's visual imagery. This is an absolutley stunning game in every sense. The game makes you feel like you're traversing through these different lands in varrying types of environments. There are deserts, mountains, and underwater environments just to name a few. There are many little details that make that game a feast for the eyes. One of my favorite features are reflections on pollished floors. All of which are redered very well. Even though the PS2 is over five years old, it shows no signs of it's age in God of War. God of War's graphics feature a "soften" feature which slightly blurs the picture. If you turn if off you get a crisper picture. The only bad thing about the graphics are that the camera is not free to adjust. And occasionally if you have an older PS2, you'll get a brief pause in the game while it loads the next area. It's a minor nuisance that I think could have been avoided by placing a door or obstacle in the way to impede your progress slightly.
But make no mistake, as lavish as the graphics are the real star here is the gameplay. The main character, Kratos, has a ton of moves you can execute. Some are more devastating than others. His main weapons are his chain blades called The Blades of Chaos that extend from his arms. As the game progresses Kratos will earn different abilities from the different gods. Each power is unique and all of Kratos' abilites are upgradable. Making attacks more effective. The moves are easy to execute using the PS2's dual shock controller. The only thing that is a little tricky is the evade move which is enabled by the right analog stick. The game is relatively short, about 20 hours and there's no online play (how would you play a game like this online?) but the extras really enhance the replay value. Be warned: this game is EXTREMELY violent. The level of gore is rather severe. This game is NOT for young children.
One thing that designer David Jaffe included was a ton of extras. There are challenge modes, documenatarys, trailers, deleted levels, a character graveyard where unused character models can be viewed, extra costumes and an ultra challenging God mode. There's no shortage of extras here.
There are some that have said this game was "overhyped", however I don't understand why. I saw the usual commercials, magazine adds and demos were sent out. There wasn't nearly the hype level as there was for higher profile games. The staff at my local GameStop told me that there wasn't a pre-order blitz until literally days before the game's release.
This is quite literally one of the best games on the PS2. If there's any doubt I at the very least recomend you rent it first. But once you start playing you may not stop. God Of War goes in the "must play" category. And once you do you'll be glad you did.
Brilliant but a bit rushed

I'm not a big fan of this style of game, unless you go way back to the old Golden Axe arcade game, but I'd heard so much about this one and read so many rave reviews that I just had to try it out.
I'm glad I did. This game really sucks you into its world. I hate combos and button mashing, but God of War's controls are pretty easy to use and the combos are introduced gradually so that by the end you look like a pro without realising how much you've progressed. This is the most important aspect of the game: it is very, very playable and a lot of fun, even just to watch somebody else play. It's just... COOL. The moves your character has, his weapons, the enemies, and some of the visuals, are simply awesome. It's a hard game, but not because of the controls or anything like that. The character does what you tell him to do and the controls are easy enough that he does what you WANT him to do (with occasional exceptions). The enemies behave intelligently enough, although they seem to have trouble with different heights (this is only an issue at one or two points). They don't really need advanced AI to suck you in - they just attack you, and that's what you want and expect. I did find with one of the bosses that if I stood at a certain point I could attack him without being in much danger - not sure if this was deliberate but it felt like I was cheating somehow and was out of character with the rest of the game.
The graphics are incredible. Gorgeous artwork abounds, particularly during flashback story sequences. The visuals during play are technically superb and there is a seamless merging of the interface so that everything you do seems natural and flowing. Sound and music is also excellent - this is one of the very, very few games that I will play with the music on.
The story is simple but completely engrossing. The gameplay and puzzles are sufficiently varied that the old "I'll go to the next save point..." addiction kicks in really hard. You just want to see what comes up next, to the point where you've been sitting there for 6 hours without getting bored. During the plot sequences, and particularly early during actual play, there are some real jaw-dropping moments. When you're given a new combo or new weapon you will stop and say, "WOW!".
It is a difficult game but not ridiculously so. I've not spent more than about half an hour on a particularly difficult puzzle or battle. I seem to be able to get through a tricky section just before frustration kicks in, but I'm always challenged by the game. In other words the difficulty level is spot on. For me, anyway. However I can understand that some people find some of the puzzles and platforming elements a bit too hard and it's not possible to make those parts any easier - that's something of a minus. On the plus side there are plenty of well-placed checkpoints, so you don't waste any time getting to the same point to try again. It will keep you engrossed for hours but not because you're playing the same part again and again - it's quite a long game for something in this genre. It feels like you've come a long way, but without really working hard for it. Time flies with this game.
It's a very violent and gory game, and there are a few naked breasts in it, so be wary of buying this for your kids. I don't find it detracts from my own enjoyment though.
There are some basic flaws in the game. You will come up against many old fashioned invisible walls (something that I really hate in a game). Similarly, trying to position your character just right in order to grab an enemy or push a box around can be somewhat frustrating. As with many fixed-camera games, there are problems with the camera location. Running round a blind corner and coming face to face with an enemy is pretty unpleasant, particularly in parts where you need to retrace your tracks and run towards the camera. Also, it can be difficult to judge jumping distances at times without having the camera under your own control, and sudden switches in camera location can throw your situational awareness out of whack. It feels as though the game was pushed out a couple of months early, but the developers (rightly) focused on the more important aspects of gameplay and managed to produce a game that is extremely FUN to play, and still very immersive, despite a handful of minor flaws. They got the hard things right, and one or two of the easy things wrong - no big disappointment.
FUN BUT A LITTLE OVER HYPED

This is a fun and enjoyable game but Ive been hearing an extreme lot about how it is one of the best made games ever and I ust dont agree. Its good and plays very similiar to Devil May Cry or Onimusha games. However some downfalls are that it is too short(can easily complete in one weekend)gives you the feeling that your breezing through the game without getting your moneys worth, combat and puzzles are too simple until near the end of the game, takes a long time to upgrade weapons, only 2 or 3 bosses in the entire game. Now the good Great graphics, interesting characters and decent enough storyline, explicit and violent combat, and the game is well guided and not too maze like, and very little loading between levels. OVERALL is a good game here worth the $50 for most but some may feel like they did not get enough as like I said 90% of God of War the average gamer will breeze right through.

Upon starting this game, my hopes of an enjoyable expierence were met with a sub-par opening video reminent of the end of the first Ghostbusters (tm) game, quote bill murray (noone knocks over a church in my town!) In story mode, the main character (voice acted by Rick Moranis) and his insignia of forces travel the Southwest and eventually stumble upon Epsilon, the god of war... but i wont give away any spoilers! One frustrating aspect of this game was the camera angles, which seemed to randomly switch between over-the-head view and 1st person as it saw fit. I would say that my favorite section, however, was the soundtrack (performed by Paul Chauffer and the CBS orchestra) always seemed to set the mood just right. The controllers took a bit to get used to, this game seems more fit for the PC mouse/keyboard setup than the console contoller. Tons of unlockables such as big heads, "disco" mode, and an over-the-top musical number featuring the characters make this game replayable for quite awhile, and was a welcoming feature. Overall, I thought this game was worth renting, but not buying; as with a little strategy and a ton of caffiene, you could easily finish this game within the forthnil.
I BROKE THE CONTROLLER PLAYING THIS GAME!!

YUP THATS RIGHT!! I DID BREAK MY CONTROLLER PLAYING THIS GAME!!! I WAS SOOOO INTO IT AND GOT SO HYPED UP THAT I BROKE IT!! AND BOY DID I GET A GOOD TONGUE LASHING!
Anyway, this is one of the BESTEST games i ever played! ever! i dont like just anything! i dont usually notice but the graphics are amazing! AMAZING! only another game can match this in graphics! Genji! thats what came my mind right now! but the graphics are so detailed and perfected! i keep on thinking on how much effort they put in working on the graphics! dont they get bored?! that could be a dumb question but seriously i cant imagine working on every single detail! they look real! at one time i actually thought they were real!
another thing its really gory! i kinda got freaked out when i saw a neck thats like slashed and blood pouring out! but its awesome! i dont mean the gore is awesome! the art is! i can see how much time and effort they have put in making this game! the only thing i would have been glad they would not have spent details on is the nudity! gak! it was gross! absolutly disgusting! they had to ban the game in my country so when i traveled to london i got it! and when i saw the naked women i knew why! disgusting!
the enemies you fight are fairly easy! not very hard although there are 4 types of difficulties i only played the Spartan(hard) level. there are 4: mortal(easy), hero(normal), spartan(hard), god (very hard). the only time where it gets frustrating is a bunch of annoying weak monsters gang up on you! its annoying! there are many awesome monsters and they are pretty strong! so you gotta stay alert and dodge when you need to or block so you would have the best advantage when you get ready to strike! dont always dodge, block also! my brother is driving me crazy! he always dodges and wastes great attaking chances! this is from a tae kwon do fighter point of view! so thats why i am strict about taking advantage of a situation when you have a chance! so yea...
this game isnt always action! you gotta have the brains to figure out things and have a good memory! because something from a previous stage will have to do with something in another stage! i dunno how to explain it! but you got to stay alert for hints and moving stuff!
the story is brilliant! i liked how smoothly the story flows. everything is tied to the other and it makes wonderful and captivating and always wants you to know whats going to happen next! from the beginning to the end! its captivating and the events are unpredicatble! first he is cruel then he is a hero then he rescues a woman then he is cruel again!
honestly this is a game that captivates you to the extent where you get so involoved and engrossed that the time flows so fast and i get pretty hyped up at anything so i literally got mad when i was about to die and lose to a stinking bunch of monsters and i was like DIE!!! BASTARDS!!!! and i broke the controller. and then died. a happy ending isnt it!? :D
advice: BUY IT! ITS WORTH IT! TRUST ME!
Beware if you don't have the newer consoles

I purchased God of war for 53 dollars and change. I have 4 PS2's and it didn't load on any of them. it doesn't even try to load! I'm so angry right now. I wanted to play it especially since I enjoy Greek mythology. My consoles are the original PS2's, ( not the newer Thin ones ) and I think I really Bites that Sony would have us buy all new consoles to play these newer games. The store has a no refund on electronics policy. Iexchanged it twice, thinking a bad game CD. But no refund. Yea! I'm Livid !
I gave it 1 stare cuz it demands a star. Otherwise, This game is a FLOP!

A couple people have written very good comprehensive reviews that I totally agree with first of all. I would just like to add my 2 pennies to the technical side of the game. If you have a HDTV capable widescreen TV and use Component Video out cable, you are in for a real treat. The graphics and detail is no doubt above almost all of the games that I have played outside of GT racing series. The sheer scale of the environments you are immersed in are extremely detailed. You really get the sense of how expansive the surrounding area is compared to Kratos' size/scale. I have a 60" Hitachi Widescreen TV and the first boss, the reptile/snake in the boat area was awesome. I also would commend the developers on the how fast loading times are and the Pro Logic sound of the game. If you have surround sound, please please use it on this game if not any other. What a great experience. I've been playing games since about 84 and it is getting really hard to surprise me, but this is truly a great game and will now be the standard for Action games of its kind in the future in my opinion.
