An incredible action game that takes aspects from inovative platformers such as Mario 64 and blends them with intense action from the likes of Devil May Cry and Dynasty Warriors. Let us not forget the immense amount of Greek mythology that is being employed though, as God of the War is without a doubt one of the best 'Greek' games to have appeared on any console in ages. In fact, it might just be the best one yet. Featuring all of the classic Greek characters and monsters that we have all come to know, God of War will be enjoyable to many due to just it's sheer accessability. It also has a great storyline to boot, featuring the slow yet intense character development of a man who has been driven into madness by his thirst for power and his fall from grace by murdering the only people he loved. He is now left to explore only one goal: revenge upon the one being who gave him the power that he has today. And so comes the title of the game and it's eventual last boss: "GOD OF WAR".

Moving on, the soundtrack to God of War is very good as well, but it could use some work in places. The music is a little dreary from time to time, and it seems to just repeat on the same few notes when you're in certain places. The music does though capture the feel of ancient Greece rather well, but one could become rather bored with it rather fast if they were listening to it out of context. Beyond that though, the music performs wonderfully, especaly with the way it is used to cue in and cue out battles. The music will end on epic notes and choruses as you expel all of your foes from a room, for example. The sound effects in the game are also very well picked, as they all give you the feel that you are watching a movie. And the voice acting fits perfectly with the theme and setting of the game.

The graphics in God of War are also very good. The way the light reflects off of everything and the detail put into the cinimatics makes you sometimes forget that you are playing a PS2 video game. They also make you wonder if the limits of the PS2 have been indeed reached. There is a slight flaw with the graphics though, as the cinimatics do sometimes not seem to capture the emotion that the main character feels when he is yelling. The artists also seemed to have had a bit of a problem putting expressions on people's faces at times...

Despite the graphic errors though, God of War has a lot of power packed into it. This leads to some very addictive game play (which is a sign of a very good game.) It also has a lot of replay value built into it, with the unlockable content that you receive from completing the highest difficulty, the different costumes in the game, and the frustrating challange of the gods mode. All in all, God of War is very well worth the hype, and leaves us hoping for a great number of sequils in the future.

I actually would give this game a 4.5, but due to Amazon not allowing for such a rating, I had to round up.

The pinnacle of action/adventure bliss

Nearly five years into the development cycle of the aging Sony
Playstation 2, gamers are treated to one of the most awe-inspiring and creative masterpieces to be accomplished in this day and age of video games. By lepas and bounds, God of War is easily one of the most addictive, frustrating, and excrutiatingly difficult videogames around, but the rewards are immense, and the satisfaction, of just completing certain areas on God mode, adds to the overall excitemnet that this game emits from beginning to end. As we follow the story of Kratos, as we witness his apparent suicide at the outset of the game, we are left wondering the whole time through, can we change the destiny of this mans apparent suicide, and if so, how? As we the player weave our way through the lores of Greek mythology, fighting Medusa's, Centaur's, Minotaurs, and even the multi-headed Hydra, we are greeted to a visual feast unheard of on the Sony Playstation 2. However, it is not just the graphics where this game truly shines, it is really in the gameplay which this game has in spades, as you continually defeat enemies you absorb orbs which in turn can be used to power up weapons and magic powers that you acquire through the different Gods in your adventure. From Poseidens Rage, to Medusa's Gaze, each spell gets considerable use throughout the game, with Hades demons probably getting my tip of the hat for the best and most useful spell, as you can still attack the enemies while the spell is going on and the demons fight with you in the background while obliterating enemies at the same time. Clocking in at just over 8 hours for me the first time through, the game rewards those for repeated with the unlocking of extras and God mode after defeating the game on normal or hard the first time through. To say that this game has some of the best extras is a vast understatment, as unlockable costumes, movies from the developers and artists, and others really show how much effort went into the game, and truly gives you an eye for what goes on in the development process of a game. I've rambled enough though, if my review doesn't convince than here's this: This game is honestly one of the best games ever made, right up ther with Castlevania: Symphony of the Night, and Metal Gear Solid 1, and it will be remembered for years to come. I just wouldn't expect a sequel too soon as I would think this team is going to finish the new Twisted Metal for PS3 first and then make the sequel, but I'm sure we'll all be patiently waiting. Thank you Sony for having the balls to release this game, and reneeing my faith that there is always room for improvement in the action adventure category in this day and age.

Yes...it really is that good

First off, Greece. I was amazed by the graphics that simply was perfect to watch, playing or just standing idol to admire the creation. Second, the gameplay. I haven't seen a more faster, in depth gameplay since Devil May Cry. Every aspect of the gameplay is what got me addicited. Third, the story. It may be basic, just another vengence title, no...it's more than that. I like the fact that you get to play a somewhat villianous character who at times seem like the hero. Well, he is the hero of the game and kicks a whole lot of a$$, but there is more to it. The story and character essence here is ideal and hey, if you are playing the renegade spratan warrior Kratos, might as well kill a few innocent civilians. This isn't the first game where you get to kill innocent people, but it seems more consciously better as you will always be the relentless slayer of beasts and gods.

The levels featured here are robust and richly detailed, from the ground to the mountains. The puzzles and mental tests found in each level is what makes this game more staid and professional. I mean if this game took three years in the making, it sure did come out great. There's even bonus features that are unlocked every time you beat a challenge. Costume designs and hidden items are few of the rewards to gain if you successfully slay some of the most hardest opponents including gods, beasts aand other mytical creatures.

God of War play well. From the first time i bought it and took it for a rip on the Play Station 2, to the ending movies, special features and detailed lineament i've experieced. Playing this game really got me looking forward to more adventure titles that'll be released on PS2 and PS3. Everything you know about adventure games, PS2 and Greek Myth will be put to the test in this excellently fabricated game. The PS2 never released anything this good since Metal Gear Solid, Devil May Cry and Final Fantasy, so i suggest anyone over the R rating to play this game. It doesn't matter if you're a sports entusiast, stratagist or FPS die hard fan, God of War can connect to any PS2 player because it porvides excellent gaming and fun that makes the word 'game' relevant. It's a great title and i reccomend it to anyone over the age of 18.

A fantastic ask questions later kick *ss now game

God of War is one of those games that comes along and just about blows everything out of the water. I have never played a first person shooter (though this doesn't really have any gones, but its got that feel of just killing anything that moves) that is so engrossing, and at the same time doesn't numb your mind with boredom. I've had times when doing the same thing over and over, much like in Halo and Halo 2, though those are also fantastic games, where I just get sick of hitting the "A" button. This game does not do that.

You are challenged throughout the game to find intelligent ways of getting through certain parts, much like puzzles, and the game is fantastic in that it gives you just enough of a subtle hint to figure it out without yelling in your face how to do it. This can be seen in just the first 30 minutes of the game, during the Hydra boss scene, but I won't give any hints away.

Both the graphics and the music are quite amazing. This game rivals that of the current XBOX360 games, sometimes even with the HD. The soundtrack is also fantastic, giving the game a heartpounding feel that keeps you on the edge of your seat, or couch or whatever.

You could not possibly ask more of a game than what is presented here, and God of War does fantastically in delivering everything you would want from a video game.

Excellent gameplay, hooks you from start

I managed to attain a PS3 at launch, after playing and beating resistance, i was interested in purchasing some of the best ps2 games available since i have never owned a sony console before. After reading over its high scores and postive reviews, i bought my self a copy and dove it.

I would just like to note that I favor the "action adventure" genre of games, ie GTA, Bully, Tomb Raider, etc. Being a fantasy action adventure, God of War allows you to explore various areas with goals clearly indicated. Sure there is a lot of fighting along the way, but its much more that simple button mashing. You learn combos along the way, earn powers, earn ways to upgrade said powers, etc. It does require thinking to play this game and times it does require patience. I notice some reviewers did not appreciate some of the game because it is "frustrating." I agree, however, a game is supposed to be challenging...also the creators did a great job of placing many check points so that you dont have to repeat certain sequences again.

All in all, the game shows you a great time...you probably could beat in a day or two if you played nonstop..it took me about a week and half..playing a couple of hours here and there (according to the game it took me just over 10 hours of gameplay to "conquer" god of war).

If you like tomb raider, gta, or other action adventure games, dont miss out on this, im glad i bought it and to top it off, its under $20 nowadays.

Cheers.

Simply Amazing.

I remember the first time I played the original Devil May Cry. It was the game that almost made me forgive Sony for killing my beloved Dreamcast, and consequently, almost made me buy a PS2. Fast forward to the future a few years to March 2005 in which the only gaming in my mind was on Xbox. And it was at this time that I heard of God of War, a game that eventually won "Game of the Year." I saw countless positive reviews hailing it as the best action/adventure game on PS2. Sadly, I was not convinced at the time of such claims. Then about a month ago, disillusioned with all the next-gen consoles and their high prices and lack of games, I finally decided to take the plunge and get a PS2 along with God of War. The result is that I could not be happier that this was my first, full blown, gaming experience on the PS2.

From the opening cinematic to its grand conclusion God of War is the stuff of legend. There have been many, many action games before it and plenty after its release, but I cannot recall a single game in my long gaming history that combines so many great elements to make an unforgettable experience like the one on this game. This is a game that doesn't focus on innovating the action genre, but rather attempts to perfect everything in it, and tries to make all its features better than anyone else. The story of God of War, the graphics, the music, the combat, the art design, etc. are of the highest quality, even two years after its release.

Someone asked me a few days ago if this game was worth $20. My answer was that the first level and the first boss fight are alone worth that much. And that's only about 2 hrs of the game. The fluidity of the combat and spectacular blood-soaked animations will keep you away from other responsibilities for the 10-12 that it will take you to complete the game. Now, considering I have not played a game from beginning to end for at least two years until this one, I did not find the normal difficulty setting hard at all. On the contrary I was hoping for a little more challenge. Of the entire game there were only two spots where I felt a little frustrated with not being able to get from point A to point B, but overall the puzzles are fun and make you think without punishing you. And the graphics... they single handedly beat anything out there for PS2.

So if you have not played this game all I can say is that "God of War" is an experience that should not be missed.

The most near-PERFECT video game!

This game is for the avid gamer who can think. I mean really THINK! And who doesn't mind a bit of mind twisting while at battle! And when I say battle I mean BATTLE!

If you haven't played it yet, then YOU HAVE GOT TO GET THIS GAME! Oh, and I recommend playing this with a Logitech PS2 Wireless Action Controller. You don't want any cords in the way when you play this game.

AMAZING!!!!!!!!!

I have played some of the top rated games like Okami on the ps2, Resident evil 4, on the ps2, and Alien vs predator 2 on the pc. This one has got to be the best out of all the ones I have listed. This game was awarded 2005 game of the year and I can see why. The graphics are the best I have seen on the ps2. It is kind of like watching a movie. You play Kratos, who has to defeat the God of war, Ares. It is an epic quest that will reveal kratos dark past and the future. You fight different kinds of mythological creatures. The undead legionaire is a reanimated souls trained by Ares. The hydra is a snake-like beast that likes to terrorize the ships on the Aegean Sea. The Minotaur is a bloodthirsty creature that is half-man half bull. You even fight a cyclops that is a one-eyed behemoth. The gorgon was once a woman with long hair and was punished by Athena and was transformed into a snake-like creature and the hair was transformed into snakes. These are some of the creatures you will fight in the game. It has a lot of unlockable stuff when you beat the game like different costumes. It has an easter egg and it is a number you call 1-888-447-5594 when you break open the statues of a minotaur and Ares at the end of the game. It is only a free call in the U.S. and Canada. Another one is 1-800-613-8840. If you have not bought this game, go buy it now. You won't regret buying it.
