Matt's God of War Review

5 Rating: 5, Useful: 2 / 5
Date: May 05, 2005

In this game you play a character named Kratos, whose mission is to murder a God, Ares the God of War. As you progress in this graphically beautiful non-linear game, secrets of Kratos' past are revealed to you.
In the beginning of the game you learn that Kratos has been working for the Gods for about ten years. Hoping that the Gods of Olympius would rid him of his horrible nightmares of his very gruesome past.
But before the Gods can rid him of his nightmares Kratos must complete one more task. Athens (the city of Athena) is under attack by Ares. Athena sends you on a mission to get Pandora's Box to destroy Ares.
On this dangerous journey you will need to survive the Desert of Lost Souls, The Temple of Pandora and even the Underworld to achieve your goal.
Overall I think this is a very good action game anyone will like (well maybe not anyone). Oh, and the extras are cool too. But this isn't one for the kiddies.

One of the best action games PERIOD.

You've read a lot of reviews to get to this one, most likely, and they've gone on about how great it looks (it does look tremendous), how fantastic the gameplay is (it is awe-inspiring), and how just absolutely great of a gaming experience it is. There are a few things that I would like to add. First off, there is one slight problem with the game. Personally, with action games of the 3rd-person variety, I like to be able to control the camera. This game does not have that. Instead, you are taken where the gamemakers want you to go and only what they want you to see. This is a very slight complaint, and one I'm hoping will be improved with GOD OF WAR II. The second thing that I would like to add is that the Mythological aspect of this game is GREAT! It really gives the game a very epic scale that is not found in a great many games. It's the thing that drives this game farther than it usually would. It's a tremendously entertaining, and oft-times thought-provoking, game that has a sense of gravitas that most action slice'em-dice'em games of this type get to. Get it!

Believe the hype!!!

For all you non-believers out there, BUY THIS GAME! I was like you...reading the reviews, looking at the box in various stores, pondering, considering, thinking to myself, "should I buy this game?" Now that I finally spent the mere $20 and played the game, I am wondering why I didn't do so sooner. As an avid Playstation supporter, (Stood in line for hours and paid over $600 for my PS2 back in the day), this game contains nearly flawless gaming entertainment. Cinematically driven storyline, supurbly coordinated character control, creative levels and character design, great soundtrack, decent bosses, pretty cool power moves, and, (importantly), puzzles are not overly frustrating to the point of throwing your controller through the TV screen...except for maybe climbing the rotating spike columns. In closing, all I gotta say is the same thing I said my first sentence of this review...BUY THIS GAME!

The best original PS2 title in years

There's a reason that you chose to purchase a PS2 over the competition all those years ago, and it's because of unique and exclusive titles like Shadow of the Colossus, Guitar Hero, and this instant classic. God of War may appear to be a button mashing beat 'em up at first glance, but look deeper and you'll find one of the most richly produced and rewarding games made in the past decade. You play as spartan warrior Kratos, and you're on a mission of revenge against Ares, the God of war. Armed only with your dual wielding blades and a few magic tricks, you take on a horde of deadly enemies and participate in some of the most epic boss battles ever crafted; ranging from mythical creatures such as the Hydra, the Minotaur, and Cerberus. The game is easy enough to pick up and play and the combo systems and moves are incredibly done. The game's storyline and voice acting are incredible for a video game, as what seems like a routine revenge tale evolves into something much, much more. Graphically, you are not going to find another PS2 title that looks this good. These are some of the absolute best graphics to ever grace the system, and there's virtually no slowdown! The sound effects and music score are also some of the best you'll hear in a video game as well. As you no doubt know already, God of War is also one of the bloodiest and most violent games you'll play as well, and it earns it's Mature rating for it's content, so be warned. All in all, as a more than sucessful start of a new franchise for Sony's money making machine, God of War is a masterpiece that belongs in every PS2's owner's collection, and by the time you beat it, you'll be begging for God of War 2.

Lots of fun, beautiful graphics

I'm having a great time with it - I'm a pretty casual gamer and buy only 2-3 games a year. I got this after all the hype around God of War 2, but didn't want to spend the $50 or whatnot. I was looking for a cheap alternative so found this.

The game is tons of fun - lots of hacking and slashing, not too hard, and really gorgeous. The story line is not tremendously clever, but it's interesting enough to watch the brief cut-scenes. I've been able to play this for a few days, and easily pick it up again two weeks later.

God of War...Can't wait for God of War II

My son loves this game. He was so surprised to get this guide for his birthday, and can't wait for part two to be released. I was very pleased with the quality of this manual, very through in the layout of the game. My son was pleased, and so was I.

A masterpiece!

God of War is one of the most imaginative and exciting action-adventure games available for the PS2. In it, you have a character who is not only blessed with a pair of powerful swords, but also is given various powers of the gods. The game is entirely based on Greek Mythological characters. As Kratos, the legendary chosen one, you must make your way through countless obstacles, hordes of amazingly detailed enemies, and stunning landscapes. The controls are easy to adjust to, which makes for great playability, and all the secrets in the game make it worth playing over again. Here's a little breakdown of the key components:

GRAPHICS: 10 (out of 10)
What can I say? The graphics, simply put, are flawless. The amount of detail, the character design, the art direction, all of this is done to perfection!

SOUND: 9
The sounds of swords clashing, people screaming, blood gushing, and monsters roaring are all very refreshing music to my ears. The music is very nicely done as well. However, the voice acting is not great. Other than that, it sounds great.

ORIGINALITY: 10
This is a whole new concept to the action/adventure genre of gaming. Not only are you fighting hordes of monsters in a Castlevania style battle system, but you use various buttons to interact with the backgrounds. Also, the idea of getting magical "powers of the gods" is truly a fabulous and unique touch.

REPLAY: 8
It's a good game to replay, because only at the Spartan (hard) difficulty level can you unlock some secrets.

FINAL THOUGHTS:
God of War is one of the finest games SCEA has released in a while (even if it's about a year and a half old, that statement still stands strong today). The graphics are so intense that it sometimes looks like you're playing a movie. But the only downside that I can think of is the occasional choppiness in the frame rate...that, and the fact that if you're under the age of 17 this game is ABSOLUTELY NOT for you. It's rated M for just about every reason a game should be rated M: very graphic violence, sexual content and nudity, and graphic language. So parents, keep this in mind. Other than that, this game is MAGNIFICENT!

Hardcore as Hell!

It's like a Spartan version of Devil may cry. Smash and kill your way through everything. What could be better? Nothing, that's what! Buy it.

God of Games?

Quite possibly the best video game ever made. Super addictive. Makes you think a lot about some of the "puzzles" you are presented with, so it keeps you engaged, even though the game does take some time to complete. Even the extras are awesome (storyboards, what Kratos could've looked like, etc.) Would even make a pretty good movie too. Can't wait for a follow up.

Simply Awesome... with one drawback.

Simply awesome because in several ways it inspires awe in the player. The awe of non-stop high-speed action that also engages your brain. The awe of environments that make you stop, mouth open, just appreciating the epic proportions. The awe in some of the imaginative concepts, like battling through an immense fortress on the back of an enormous giant, or through the underworld of Hades with the damned falling into the River Styxx all around. The awe in levels of fun that blow your expectations. Even the music contributes to the sense of awe. It's beautiful, action-packed, bloody (yes, very bloody), gripping, and easy to play. After GTA: San Andreas (simply because I played it first), this is the best so far.

Addendum: The only major drawback is its brevity. I was frankly amazed at how short the game was; Just when I thought I was getting IN to it, it was over. I think there were only 3 major boses to the whole game. I don't know why they contsrained themselves to a time limit when it so severely limited the length of the game; it could have been so much more. The game is epic in every way but length! What it is IS fantastic, but be prepared to say, "Wait... that's it? That's...IT?"
