All the reviews are correct. This game is so great! It is one of the best (if not the best) hack and slash/adventure game I have played.
I think what sets this game apart is the awesome detail and scenery. There are times in the game when you come up over a hill or stairs and then you just have to suck in your breath at how stunning the view is.
I mean there were times when I was literally just staring.
The controls are in my opinion seamless. It is easy to fight..controlling your moves and combos are simple and easy to remember. You can switch from magic to blades in a split second and keep fighting.
I can't explain how fun it is to play. It is just hard enough, but no so much that you get frustrated and never want to play again.
The fights are kick-a@#. The weapon of choice are two blades that seem to catch fire and swirl and whip around. Its so much fun to fling those blades around and kill those creatures.
And the soundtrack!!!! The best I have ever heard! It MAKES the game. So professional and it fits the game perfectly.
Honestly, anyone who has ever played Tomb Raider and loved them will fall in love with this game. I kept telling my husband that they should make a Tomb Raider like this...instead of that Angel of Darkness crap.
It is well worth the money and
lets hope they make a God of War II.

Make no mistake.... GOW is not for the weak of heart. Or stomach. Or any one with Tipper Gore r Overly Christian Parents. The game is the story of Kratos , Spartan Warrior who sold his soul to Aries , The God of War. In exchange for his soul Aries gave Kratos the power neccisary to destroy his enemys. This game is FUN. The battle scenes are often and well planned expected to get swarmed if you dont stratigize your attacks. ( R1 Attacks are good[R1+O]) There are only two problems with the game really. It last mabye six hours, Think the first Devil May Cry, fun but short. Also it only has 3 bosses and the last one is easier than the first. But overall crap out 50$ for this game. It was the first game i bought new for that price and it was worth it. You will play over and over and good luck with The Chalenge of the Gods.....

This game is one of the best games to come out on the PS2 platform. The storyline is great and the action keeps you wanting to play more. There is a caution for parents not to let younger kids play this game. It is filled with violence and nudity thus the reason for the Mature rating. This is a game for individuals 16 and above at a minimum.

For me is very simple, the best Game for PS2 I ever played before. I love the history and if you likes the old legends and myths, you will love it too, not by the accuracy and precission but for the feeling of figth the legendary battles. The images are really awesome, maybe in the middle of the battles you could find some "slow motion" seconds, but it is not a issue. Just have in mind it is not for children; the gore, the nude scenes, some facts as the human sacrifice you have to do is for adults only. You won't think in the fifty bucks after the experience.
Fantastic fun and nearly flawless

First thing's first - this game has very graphic, bloody violence, and Kratos, your character, is on a nice-guy mission but is not a nice guy. He's not above wasting a good guy to get at a bad guy. So keep your youngun's away. :o)
I had high hopes for this after reading the description, and boy, were they fullfilled. I hate to say *too* many good things about a game and come off sounding easily impressed, but God of War is very, very easy to say good things about.
First and formost - the fighting. You do a lot of it and the battle engine was all but flawless. No slowdowns or snags no matter how many enemies flooded the screen, except for one or two specific situations. Even then it wasn't jarring. Your weapons (you start with two swords-on-chains, then soon get a more powerful single sword, and can switch between them at will) and the attack combinations are great fun and the really useful ones are easy to remember. Enemies (playing in "normal" Hero mode) are tough enough to keep you working but not so hard as to wear you down. I'm also in love with the Greek beasties used, like minotaurs and Satyrs. One mistake God of War *didn't* make that so, so, so many games do - kill and enemy and they're gone. Move on a ways and come back, and they're still gone. I hate perpetually re-spawning enemies, especially when I want to backtrack. Thank you, thank you, makers of GOW for making the dead stay dead.
You also acquire various magic attacks which come in very handy at times, and they're upgradable along with your swords. Make sure you find the more obscure caches of red orbs to charge things up.
Puzzles you must solve along the way (there are plenty of breaks from the carnage where you have to think things through) are usually solvable without resorting to a walk-through. Just do the usual and look around carefully.
As others have mentioned, graphics are great and PS2 games have really improved here. There are lots of mechenizations that are nicely conceived and detailed, and the game keeps up with it all.
Cut scenes are good and not too long, so you don't waste a lot of time watching movies when you could be playing.
So what's bad? Well, I prefer camera control and the game uses it's own, so you often find yourself running at the camera without being able to see where you're going. But as fixed cameras go, this one is very good and almost never aggravates.
The ending is a little anticlimactic, once you've defeated the final foe, but very fitting for the storyline.
My biggest complaint is, once you finish the game, you unlock "God mode," the hardest setting. I don't know how anyone could possibly play this. I couldn't get past the very first fight (on a boat against a small hoard of swordsman), for crying out loud. Maybe I'm just lame, or there's something I don't know, but it was a disappointment. Oh well, the replay value on normal (I also did the easiest just for fun) is right up there.
If you have any doubts, don't listen to them and get this game. It really is excellent.
believe in all the hype because this is a classic!

My real reason for playing this game is both simple and embarassing. I bought it used for my PS2 only to discover it had trouble plaing on my old model. It then sat gathering dust until I bought my PS3. So after an uncertain futre, it has become the first test of the PS3's interplatform compatability.
Heaven knows what I expected when I cranked up the game - certainly the lavish explosion of graphics and action that appeared. It's easy to see, once you start playing, why this game quickly became a favorite of platform and action advention players alike. And even I, someone who prefers the RPG genre, was quickly drawn into the experience. the people who put this game together knew how to get the most out of a PS2.
You find yourself in a mythical version of Greek mythology as Kratos, a Apartan warrion who, in a moment of rashness, promised his soul to Aries if the god would save his life. Aries comes through, but abuses Kratos' trust, tricking him into the destruction of his own family. Kratos desperately seeks to forget the horrors of his misdeeds, and, when offered an opportunity to seek out and destroy Aries, snaps up the opportunity.
This is going to drag you through an unending supply of Greek scenery - hacking, maiming, and generally slaughtering everything you meet. You will get new weapons and magic, power them up, and generally run a bloodbath for the 40 hours or so it takes to play through. This kind of exhuberant athleticism accompanied by flying parts is sheer fun. Lots of puzzles must also be solved and some incredible bosses. You're going to die a lot in the process, but the game generally puts you back someplace reasonably convenient.
I don't think you can go wrong with God of War, and I can testifiy that it survives the trip to the PS3 without a hiccup.
The God's have blessed us indeed!

"You are Kratos, and you will murder the God of War."
This game is amazing, just absolutely incredible. God of War is one of the greatest games I have played, but it is challenging and sometimes puts your mind to it's limits. This game can be very confusing and sometimes make you want to throw your controller though the TV screen, but this is not a game for those who expect an easy game they could beat with no effort.
The difficulty of this game lies not in combat, (that will very on your skill and the way you fight and level up Kratos.) but this game's difficultly is derived from its obstacles and near-impossible tasks. Example, in the Paths of Hades, and in the Underworld Area, there are many obstacles such as rotating pillars that are covered in spikes that you must climb, and are very hard to avoid, and infinite health and abilities with Game Shark will not help you there at all. There are also jumping areas with easy pitfalls, but my point is this: you will come to areas that you must examine greatly, find a tactic for it, and go with it, even if you die 20 times in the process.
Pros:
-Stunningly good graphics and amazing scenery will keep you captivated throughout the game.
-A good fighting system with easy to learn combos and button combinations, and a wide verity of attacks will keep the battles from never getting old.
-A very deep and rich storyline with genuine Greek Mythology, as it talks of the Gods, the Titans, and various other things deprived from Greek legends of old.
Cons:
-Game play may become dragged out and tedious at times, and some stages may leave you with a desire for new scenery.
-Obstacles in the game can become extremely difficult and you may attempt certain parts over 20 times before you finally succeed. When I said this game was challenging I meant it.
-The game is relatively short, but it is satisfying.
So all-in-all I give this game 5 stars, It is amazingly awesome and amazingly difficult, but any game is difficult the first time you play it. The more you play it, the more you will get used to the controls and you shouldn't have too hard of a time. I highly recommend this game if you want a challenge, and if you want to try something different. This game can be short, but it is satisfying in the end, and you can play it again in new modes and conditions as well. I hope this review helped, and may the God's of Olympus watch over you! Now go forth and buy this game, go forth, in the name of Olympus!
P.S. The God's used in this game are: Zeus, Poseidon, Hades, Aphrodite, Artemis, Ares, and Athena. The only Titan used is Cronos, but the Titans are mentioned much more in God of War II.
Even girls play it with their shirt off!

I LOVED this game! I was recommended to play it, and though the game play wasn't what I was used to, I learned it quickly. Having a sexy Spartan to move around and watch take control was getting me all tingly. Shame that the voice didn't fit though. I watched the making of God Of War and the Kratos characters that didn't make the cut. The creators said some were too tribal and too african to be greek. Then why did they choose a black man to do the voice? It just didn't fit.
Well it isn't a romance novel, its a SICK game that is sure to win the hearts of all the brutally twisted boys out there. It has won the heart of this chick! I don't need a date as long as I can play God Of War!
The thinking man's gore-fest

Set in ancient Greece, GOW's main character Kratos takes you through adventures that effectively highlight some of the most exciting legends of Greek mythology. One could describe Krato's story as a retelling of the legend of Hercules with bits of Perseus, Jason and the Argonauts, and other Greeks heroes thrown in. You encounter enemies such as gorgons, minotaurs, centaurs, hydra, harpies, cerberi, cyclopes, and even the gods themselves. It's a violent fairytale made of the best stuff the ancient greeks have to offer.
The game play handles wonderfully. Not a button goes unused and many moves can be combined to create devastating combos. My favorite move is to toss enemies up in the air and turn them to stone with Medusa's Gaze causing them to shatter when they land. I found it fun to invent new ways to destroy large groups of enemies. My only complaint deals with the activation method for the Rage of the Gods move (a desperation move L3 + R3) It's a move that's only available when a fury meter fills up. This meter takes a while to fill and the move is intended for use when a situation calls for added strength. Consequently, I rarely get to apply it to a situation where I do need it. There is also a problem-solving element to the game but nothing I found particularly clever or mindbending, it does provide a nice break from the blood fest.
Visuals/Sound - stunning.
Though the music seemed repetitive at times (Kratos has a leitmotif), there were moments where it was programmed to enhance the energy of the moment. The visuals incorporate beautifully rendered creatures and magnificent architectural invention. Gorgeous visuals. Imagine climbing up from the chasm of Hades domain while departed souls plummet past you, jumping from ship to ship as hydras rip men apart close by, scaling a cliff growing from the back of a titan (the size of a city) who crawls across the desert, his every step shaking the environment.
Interested yet?
The storyline is simple and particularly reminiscent of Hercules quest for retribution. If you are familiar with that story then you should appreciate the parallels.
Though I'm not an avid gamer (I could be characterized as a classic gamer/laggard), this game delivers challenge and thrill. It doesn't have a lot of replay value but for those who complete the post-game "Challenge of the Gods", new modes are unlocked as a result to provide added challenge, gameplay choices, and even a few fun easter eggs.
