When I first played the demo, I thought it was a fantastic action/adventure game but later I changed my mind completely.

PROS:

- Graphics, environments are gorgeous. One of the best looking games on any current-gen consoles.
- Sound and music are good.
- Story is OK.
- Controls are very responsive.

CONS:

- Although Kratos has many attacks but most of them are uninteresting and useless. As a result, the combat gets repetitive and boring quickly.

- Enemies are not diverse. Each level should have different set of enemies. I don't like to fight undead warriors and Minotaurs a dozen times throughout the game.

- Only TWO weapons: the default weapon called Blades of Chaos, and later in the game, Kratos got another one: Blade of Artemis, this is a big sword and rather powerful but it's slow. You can swith between 2 weapons by pressing L1 and R1 simultaneously but you cannot swith during a combo. (Devil May Cry 3's Dante can switch his melee weapons or guns with just the touch of a SINGLE button.)

- Kratos cannot use magic on the go.

- Only THREE BOSSES in the whole game! It should have 8-10 bosses.

- Platforming in last levels becomes extremely frustrating and it was really a nightmare to me. I played just to finish it and never want to play it again.

I don't understand why so many people praised GoW (Game Informer gave it a 10. This was ridiculous because it's far from perfect); maybe they enjoy its repetitive combat and incredibly frustrating platforming. If you like action/adventure games but hate platforming, then you should avoid GoW and I recommend Devil May Cry 3 Special Edition and Ninja Gaiden Black if you own both PS2 and Xbox.

too frustrating, not worth the trouble

hmm after constantly swearing at this game and punching the wall from dying falling off things and dying a billion times, i finally gave up. i was very near the end at zeus mountain where you fight harpies and archers on rollers and i just couldn't handle the stupid frustrating disappointment that is god of war anymore. the game started off pretty fun and innovative, but after a few levels it just disintegrated into a very uncool and boring 'hey let's make you jump from platform to platform oops you missed it your dead' type of boring wasteful blah game.
AVOID

Solid effort

Perhaps I am really picky, hard to please and even harder to impress- this game was good...not as great as the hype surrounding it says, but a good and solid effort.
The material and subject matter were awesome and the developer spent a great deal of time making everything look right and neat and polished. As with other games I review, I like to look at the technical aspects of a game and save the review of plot points for someone else.
The control scheme in this game is good, and I think that every button the dual shock2 controller has been utilized to the fullest extent. The attack buttons and combinations are easy to remember and it is easy to access magic and defense and combo attacks within short succession.
The frame rate is great, smooth game play with the most minimal of load times between some areas. The in-game movies were polished and added to the story...like others have said, this game was like playing an interactive movie...the story was not the greatest, but the material was fresh and fun and overall entertaining.
This game spent something like 3 years in development and production. 3 years. That is a long time. My only beef is that if a game has been in development for that long, how come the end result only takes me 9 hours to beat? I felt short changed, somewhat cheated out of my 49.99 or whatever it cost on release day. In fact, I traded the game in two days later for store credit at my local EB store.
The replay value is almost non-existent...even with the addition on challenges that get you new armor and the addition of an even harder "god" mode. The game is still essentially the same as when you played it the first time. Just a bit harder. To me, that is cheap. I dont want to replay the same game with harder enemies. I want something new, new areas, new enemies, new weapons, new stuff! I want something as fresh and progressive as the game itself.
My only other beef is with the nudity included in the game. I am a 25 year old male, I am an adult. But for some reason, digital breasts just dont add anything to this game. To me it shows that developers are pushing the envelope for the sake of pushing it. Nudity did not one thing to add to this game. The fact that it is in there only shows that the developer and publishing house thought it would make more testosterone ridden teens want to buy their game. For me, it is an insult. It is a game...nothing more. Your graphics engine is more impressive with lighting effects and particle effects that with the inclusion of disporportionate women who wear either nothing or next to nothing.
As a parent, I would not buy this game for my child. I would not buy this game for the price they are asking for it. As a gamer, I expect to feel as if I have gotten my money's worth in my purchase...with this game I do not feel as if I did. Rent this game...you will beat it in no time.
I liked this game, but for some reason, I just didnt feel as if it warranted a purchase on my part. Parents...this game should be kept away from younger children and those under the "M" rating age limit. It was definatley marketed at an older audience, but had nothing substantial enough to offer.

ARES!!!!!

I used to be a diehard Playstation fan, and I HATED Xbox or Gamecube. Then, after playing Halo, Halo 2, and Fable, I started to lean towards and finally decided that Xbox was a little bit better (mainly the graphics were what made me decide). But then THIS comes out, and I am COMPLETELY HOOKED!!! This game has the best graphics on the console (IMO) and the controls are perfect! The storyline isnt boring or stupid, and the cutscenes and battles are WAY above par! The only beef that I have with this game is when you're saving the Oracle. She looks COMPLETELY different in the cutscene afterwards! But that in NO WAY diminishes this game! I just found it funny. Anyway, if you're old enough to handle some extreme gore and a little breast-action, then by all means GET THIS GAME!!!!

I want to say buy this game but that's a stretch.

I would like to state that I don't buy very many games and if I do it is for the purpose of beating the game at my own pace. The last action game I shelled out my $50 for was Ninja Gaiden. I would say this game is more fun than Ninja Gaiden because there aren't as many cheap enemies and cheap bosses. There is always a way to rethink your strategy and come out on top. It is sort of a button masher but not completely. It doesn't have a complex battle system but it works perfectly. The roll in this game actually works to perfection. One thing that I liked about this game that no one else has really touched on is the sensitivity of walking on ledges. Platformers are notorious for having bad camera angles that don't let you see where you are going and you fall of cliffs or mistime jumps. Even when (and it rarely happens) you get a bad camera angle and you are walking on a ledge Kratos reacts to how balanced he is. If he is leaning left and balancing on one foot you need to fix him. I know this isn't the most spectacular thing in the world but it helps not dying over and over again and that is the thing that makes this game so great. It is challenging but just challenging enough that you don't get frustrated. I think there were two parts in this game that frustrated me and that was it. This is a fun game but the length is not worth the $50, unless you are one of those hardcore gamers that has to beat a game on every difficulty level then I would say buy it.

Just another great review

See all the great reviews here? It's for a reason. God of War is without a doubt one of the best games for the PS2. Other videogame producers should take notes from this game! The action, storyline, graphics, sound effects, and score work perfectly together. This game is a hell of a lot better than most Hollywood movies! You will get wrapped up in God of War and when it is all over you will want more. Just when I thought maybe PS2 wasn't all that great this comes along to prove me wrong. Mythology is great direction for videogames and CGI Hollywood to head towards...epic stories with powerful, breathtaking scores...ahh, life is good! Medusa, I love you!

Relentless video game block buster!

Once in a while comes a game so epic, so well made that you have to just stop and thank the powers at be that the game didn't come out on an earlier system. Everything that GOD OF WAR does well is far and beyond the mesurment of what we consider good. This game is almost the perfect game, pulling from other games like Prince of persia, and Onimusha, with such amazing graphics and game play. You play a spartan warrior sent on a mission from the gods so you can forget your horrible past. Your goal, to kill Ares, God of war. Right from pushing the start button you are thrown in to Kratos' world. The story will not let up for even one second. Your control over the game is amazing, stringing together 15+ Hit combo's with out even thinking about it. The powers you have at your control are fun to use and devistating to say the least. While the graphics are amazing they almost push the PS2 alittle too far, you'll notice if you run it on progressive scan and wide screen the PS2 has to catch its breath sometimes. Its nothing so major that you will put the controler down. From start to finish this game will take you out back, pull your pants down, spank you, tell you to go to your room with out supper, and comeback an hour later to do it again. The whole time you'll have a smile on your face. If you love pure brutality and have no shame, GOD OF WAR is your game. Also, its not for children in anyway shape or form. IT HAS A M17 RATING FOR A REASON PARENTS!!! Enjoy!

GOD OF WAR WAR RAGES ON THE PS 2 & THE WINNER IS YOU!

It is hard to imagine that in my 25 years gaming, I could still play a game that completely captures my imagination. For us old gamers we long for the feel of the Zelda series on the original Nintendo or that special moment is game, when after the 20 th hour trying, you finally defeat that one tough boss.
I bought GOD OF WAR based upon some reviews I read on gamerankings.com. My favorite titles are usually sports, but I did love the first Devil May Cry, so I thought I would plop my $55 down on this title that took years to create. I even sold some old sorry games (Midway Treasures volume 2 & Castlevania Lament of Innocence), to help fund my new game.
I was taken in the first 5 minutes. The graphics were eye dropping, and the feel of the game after 25 minutes was "oh my goodness, this is a classic". Well I was right. The is probably the best game for this genre I have ever played. The normal mode is a little easy at times, but it was an ideal setting for guys like me who don't won't to spend 20 hours getting past one phase. That was fine in my younger years, but my wife has a way of letting me know that 20 hours doesn't cut it!
The Gameplay is unreal. I felt like I was hacking and slashing. When upon the balance beam, you feel like you are really on a beam. The soundtrack was oustanding. The storyline is the best I have ever, ever seen on this type game. It sucked me in, and I was looking foward to the next clip to tell me more about the story.
This is a classic. If you are a hardcore gamer, then start on a hard level. If you pride yourself on being a top gamer, then why complain when you breeze thru the normal level. Don't whine and complain that is not good for kids. Read the darn "M", on the back. One guy dropped his rating on here, because it was not good for children. Give me a break. Pulp Fiction is not good for children, but it was a great movie. This is a 16 or above game, but the storyline and the graphics are rich, and the blood, guts, mature scenes etc.... are a part of what makes this game great. I am alright with dropping my $55 on this one. Not many games I would say that about, but GOD OF WAR, is that kind of game. Enjoy.

Tremendous game with a few minor problems

God of War has rightly been lauded as one of the best games to come out on the PS2 in recent memory. This is a hardcore action romp with a fluid 3d-person action mechanic that rivals the Xbox's Ninja Gaiden for depth. The graphics are amazing for a PS2 game (it really looks more like an Xbox or PC game), and the fact that it streams constantly rather than dividing up the world makes for a seemless experience, free from loading screens or long waits.
It is not flawless, and if Amazon let me I would give it 4.5 rather than 5 stars. Some of the platforming elements are very, very annoying, especially one toward the end of the game involving a rotating column with spikes that you must climb--I muttered more than one swear word at that bloody column, and just when it was over I realized there was a second, even harder column waiting for me. The medussa enemies are highly irritating thanks to their ability to turn you to stone and then shatter you, no matter how high your life (in fact, these where the only times enemies killed me while I played the game at the medium difficulty setting, although the environment took me out a few times via jumping puzzles). Also, there are far too few boss battles in the game; really, the ones that are there are so fantastically done that you simply want more.
Perhaps the biggest problem with this game is the length. I was able to beat the game entirely in less than 8 hours, and I typically do plenty of exploring while I play (for reference I took 20 hours to beat Ninja Gaiden the first time through). For a game like this, with such stellar production values, phenomenal CG sequences, blistering action scenes and great story elements, the brevity is definitely a problem. You are left wanting more, even though the ending is satisfying.
One word of caution: this game is not, in any way shape or form, appropriate for young children. There is nudity (more than once), sex, and gore gallor, not only in-game but also in the CG sequences as well. And the main character is not a nice man, although you do come to empathize with him by the end of the journey.
For adult game players who like 3d person action games like Devil May Cry or Ninja Gaiden, God of War is simply a must-play. Even people like me, who love the action of those games but hate the platforming parts, will thoroughly appreciate God of War, although at moments you may contemplate throwing your controller across the room.

Bordering on best game for PS2

Gow is a hell of a game. The most important aspect, it's flawless fighting scheme which allows multiple moves and combos for weapons (which expand as you upgrade,) the ability to grab and rip open enemies and the use of magic which you acquire along the way. Doors are opened, levers are pulled and even mighty crossbows are fired by continously tapping the R2 button...making every action interactive rather than programmed.
It's a button masher for sure...you'll hack and slash through rooms of countless UnDeads over and over, but at the same time, you're using combings and directions cleverly and with a method.

The levels are beautiful designed, showing us an fantastic ancient Greece that's full of brilliant statues, temples, towns and even Hades itself. Some, full of spiked walls or booby-trapped floors will seem very familiar to gamers, but still, nothing to yawn at.

On top of this, the game is chocked full of beautifully animated cut scenes, awesome bonus features after the game has been beat (including a "making of" featured, God Mode, extra challanges and incredible artwork), a great story and an anti-hero to end all anti-heroes. This game reminds me of a mix of Zelda and what a great 3D Castelvania could be, but it's not exactly perfect (although damn close.)

First, while I have no problem with the game's featured, fitting nudity among it's female villains and cut scenes (between the sex and ultra violence, this game is NOT for kids), there's a sex mini-game early on. Clearly, it was intended to get some press and display an edge, but it wasn't fitting and came off as little more than a cheap thrill. It's not explicit,( just a pattern of buttons to press while the off camera anti-hero beds two naked Greek women), it comes off as merely a non-related cheap thrill allowing the gamer to upgrade his weapon to the max...providing he spends six hours guiding the character's sex prowess. Secondly, about halfway through, it became a little repetative. It's slashing through hordes of gorgons, harpes and zombies only to end up pulling levers and scrambling before a timer runs out.

There's only three true bosses (including the final), making room for the cheap slashing of set numbered enemies as mini-bosses...which, again, seemed cheap and repative. And the final boss can be beat by simply tapping away on a button or two.

Characters such as Medusa and the Cyclops are throw away enemies which provide little challange and could have been utalized much better according to their mythology. To make matters worse, there's an unlockable featuring the creators showing off bosses and levels that didn't make the game due to time restraints. Instead of PLAYING agains Cronos or flying with Icurus' wings, we get to SEE them and hear how the might be in the next game. Why the creators showed off what could have been I don't know.

Still, this a beautiful, bug-less slasher with an interesting protagonist and a fascinating story. Definately worth buying if you dig killing stuff with blades and solving the occaisional puzzle.
