The Best ever... I NEVER LIKE VIDEO GAMEs AT ALL.. But I bought PS2, and all the tools and this game to play it in my 42 inch plasma TV/mega buck stereo music system set up!!! It is a smashing fun with my stereo system using dedicate DAC...to answer concerns..
1. It is a button smashing game TO ME, a newbie.. guess I am old(32).. My tumbs hurt a bit after three days.
2. Too short and too easy?? Not that easy to me... It's a bit short.. I just don't want this game to end...
3.epic story + a stunningly admirable warrior is fantastic!!!!!
4. creative scenes and setups to play IN...!!

This game follows the adventures of a man called Kratos. The time period is ancient Greece. And Ares, the God of War, has decided that it is time to destroy the great city of Athens. The city has fallen into decadence and it is now time to level it to the ground. Thankfully, not all of the Gods share his views. Expectedly, the patron Goddess of the city, Athena, wants to save Athens. As usual, the Gods do not confront one another directly. Instead, they use human surrogates as play pieces (much like in the game of chess) in order to change the course of events. Athena decides to use the services of Kratos, a warrior, to help save the city. Other Gods who side with Athena also decide to help Kratos on his mission. The heart of that mission is to stop Ares, even if it meant killing him, from destroying the city.
The game itself is very well done. The graphics, soundtrack, dialogue, voice acting, and gameplay are all top notch. In other words, the production values are very high.
I prefer a long prologue to draw the player into the story. I want to be gently introduced to the game and story, basically. This game however, starts you off into battle immediately. After a very, very short scene, you are then given control of Kratos onboard a ship in the Aegean sea. Immediately, you are surrounded by demonic creatures. And the action very rarely slows down after that point. Keep in mind that this is not an RPG.
This is a very challenging game. I played at the "easy" setting, Mortal. There's never any shortage of things to do, hurdles to overcome, and enemies to fight. And there's no shortage of blood, gore, and violence. As one previous reviewer mentioned, Athens is not a happy place. There's plenty of suffering and misery all around.
I recommend this game for people who like adventure games. I do not, however, recommend it for anyone who might be "squeamish". As has been mentioned already, there is an abundance of violence. And the atmosphere of the story is rather gloomy.
I do not seek to play games that contain a lot of violence, gore, and misery. My preference is for games that have an uplifting story. However, I will occasionally make an exception if the game is otherwise excellent. While God of War might be depressing and gloomy, it is also an excellent action-adventure game. One of the best that I have ever come across.
Update
I forgot to mention that a lot of players have complained that there might be a glitch in the game. This glitch comes out when you play the first boss of the game, a three-headed Hydra. During the battle, you will have the "option" to press the circle button repeatedly to slam the Hydra's head into a post. However, many gamers have complained that they were not able to do this even when they pressed the button properly. During my first playthrough, I ran across this problem. I restarted the battle three times. The third time, I was finally able to accomplish the task. Now, was that due to a glitch or improper timing on my part? I don't know. But I am an experienced gamer and my timing is usually good. So maybe there is a glitch. In any case, if you find yourself having a difficult time with this, then simply restart the battle from the Save point. Ok, Citan knows that can be aggravating. But at this point, Citan is not prepared to say that there is a glitch in the game. One thing, notice that I put 'option' in between quotations above. I don't believe you can beat the Hydra unless you play this option/mini-game. I could be mistaken, but the Hydra's health recovers during the battle. So it is something you have to do in order to proceed.
It's not my intention to spoil the game for you by telling this. No, my dear ladies and gentlemen. The last thing Citan wants to do is spoil the plot for his fellow gamers. But it might be an important bit of information for anyone who is considering the game. And don't we write reviews as a service to our fellow buyers and consumers? Is that not the purpose of these reviews?

an all around good video game. lots of action, great graphics, great sound, cool bosses (though they are few and far between), a decent number of puzzles... i could go on, but everyone else has done that. read other reviews for the good.
the game does have a few cons:
1.) it's extremely short. while at one time, i played video games a minimum of 10 hours a day, i'm too busy for that now and my skillz are mighty rusty. with that being said, i completed this game on the "normal" setting is 8.5 hours. at the "greatest hits" price, it's not a bad buy. had i paid full price for this when it initially came out, i'd probably be pretty bummed.
2.) there's no user controlled camera which can lead to some fairly frustrating moments. unfortunately, the biggest problem this caused wasn't with blocked views while fighting, it was when things like judging distance and balancing were required. from my experience, this literally took a section of the game that should have taken minutes and turned it in to a dying 30 times/dumb luck thing.
3.) a large portion of the time while fighting, this game feels like nothing more than a button masher. yes, there are different "moves" you can use, but even if you didn't bother learning them and opted instead for railing on the square and triangle buttons, you'd do fine.
4.) the unlockables are useless. some interesting behind the scenes stuff but nothing you can actually use. you are rewarded a sword at the end of the game but you can't use it if you decide to play the game again.
overall, this game is a blast if not a little repetative. worth the $20 for sure.
Great game for $20

I also was unable to get God of War to load on a first-generation PS2. I have one of the original PS2s bought on the first day of release. I've gone back and exchanged the disc twice but the game refuses to load on this PS2. My machine is still loading all my other recent titles (e.g., Champions: Return to Arms; X-Men Legends), so I do believe it's a coding/manufacturing bug. Don't know yet if I'll upgrade my PS2 just to play this title.
BEWARE god of war.......!

I received an early demo copy of this game, and loved it. Couldn`t wait to get my hands on it.Three exchanged copies later, i`m left with a fifty dollar coaster. It seems the game won`t load in first gen ps2`s, so unless your willng to buy a new system just to play this game, STAY AWAY until sony either de-bugs the disk or is willing to refund your money(like that is going to happen).

I agree with some reviewers that if you've played Prince of Persia, you've also played God of War. The story line is incomplete, the graphics are only sub-par (despite the glorious praises they have been recieving via rookie gamers) and the gameplay is utterly simplistic. This is a weak game, which is frustrating due to its limitless potential. I was glad I rented first and did not waste the money buying it.
A whole lot of fun, for adults only

This is one of the most fun video games I've played in a long time. But this game is definitely not one for kids. The violence is extreme, and the nudity and sexual content borders on NC-17 levels.
But like I said above, this is a really fun game. The combination of exciting action, and thinking puzzles makes this game really diverse. One of the most complete games for Playstation to come out in a really long time.

This game is great. I own all three systems, but my system of choice is the Xbox. I usually find that the quality of games on Xbox is better than the other two, but this game breaks that mold, hands down! If you are a fan of action/adventure games, then you will love this. The story is well told and interesting, and The graphics are impressive. The strongest point in the game, though, is the combat. It is extremely fluid and fun. If you only like to use one or two buttons on the controller, then do NOT get this. You will make extensive use of EVERY single button that's available. Excuse me; I've got to go play some more!
I AM IN LO-O-O-O-O-OVE!!!!

OK...SO MY 12 YEAR OLD SON IS EMBARRASSED CAUSE HIS MOM HAUNTED THE BLOCKBUSTER AISLES AND HARASSED THE HELP WITH CONSTANTLY WHINING "IS IT IN YET?".
AS AN AVID TOMB RAIDER, COME DEVIL MAY CRY, COME HALO PLAYER, I WAS HOPING THIS GAME WAS ALL IT WAS ADVERTISED AS BEING...A HERO'S QUEST INVOLVING PUZZLES, MAGIC, MONSTERS AND PLENTY OF TESTOSTERONE. NEEDLESS TO SAY I WAS NOT DISAPPOINTED.
OK...SO THERE WERE A FEW MOMENTS WHEN I FLUNG THE CONTROLLER DOWN IN DISGUST...OR WHEN I WAS TOO UNNERVED TO PLAY(I THINK THE HYDRA WAS A GOOD DESENSITIZER). THAT'S WHEN MY SON TOOK OVER AND HELD MY HAND.
BUT I FELL IN LOVE WITH THE GAME. THE ACCURACY OF THE MYTHOLOGY(AFTER DISNEY'S HERCULES MOVIE?...TRUST ME...I WAS GRATEFUL)AS WELL AS IN THE ARCHITECTURE AND CHARACTERS MADE THE STORY SURREAL AND ENGROSSINGLY BELIEVABLE. THE BREATHTAKING SCENERY, BLOOD AND GORE CONTRIBUTED TO IT'S REFLECTION OF SUCH A BRUTAL AGE
IT WAS GORGEOUSLY LONG AND ADDICTIVE.
I'LL BE WAITING WITH OPEN ARMS FOR GOD OF WAR 2. IN THE MEANTIME...I'LL HAVE TO BE CONTENT WITH DEVIL MAY CRY DANTE'S BROODING LOOKS AND HOPE THAT TOMB RAIDER LEGEND DOESN'T CHOKE IN IT'S RELEASE DATE LIKE TOMB RAIDER 6
