Great graphics cheap and dull gamepplay

Its like a game developed by 2 separate groups. The storyline and towns (non combat exploration) is interesting, with some superb graphics both in technical ability (long draw distance, smooth framerate) and in design with loads of color and interesting buildings, monsters and bosses.

The actual gameplay in the dungeons is just plain dull. There's no advanced player skill involved like strong/weak attacks or special skills just block and hit. And the dungeons are just plain boring corridors and rooms. Disappointing.

When I first bought this I was skeptical because the first was nothing special but to my suprise its everything the first wasn't. Original characteristics have been added to this game. You can invent your own items by finding ideas and parts for them and you do favors to gain allies who don't fight but aid you with more items. One of you character's can ride a huge robot called a ridepod wich you can customize with gatling guns, missile launchers, spider legs, and so on. The other character can transform into monster you face. The main premise of the game is to recreate the past to save the future. Overall its a well rounded Rpg not to be overlooked

So much better than the first one, it's not even funny.

Gee, this game could use a decent review, I guess.

I never could finish the first Dark Cloud. It just sort of dragged, with dungeons always feeling the same, lack of any real semblance of a story line, too much useless character switching... The flaws are too numerous to name. Yet there was something about it, wasn't there? The way it stitched different genres together into a fairly cohesive package, the way it gripped you and made you keep going... It was with a somewhat heavy heart that I set it aside.

I'm very pleased to report that its sequel removes much that hindered the first game and adds in enough fresh, thoughtful and fun material to make it one of the ten best games on PS2. The graphics are outstanding, the storyline fairly fun and enjoyable, the combat heavily improved, the gameplay systems streamlined yet complex. Even the music is very good, something I can't remember from the first game.

There are so many things to do, you'll always be busy, and nothing goes without a reward. All the mechanics are introduced slowly, which I think is nice. You'll never feel overwhelmed. There is on-line help and visual tutorials up the yin-yang (which you can access anytime but never HAVE to view), and there are also handy in-game checklists that automatically keep track of everything you're doing, from building up towns to taking pictures (for the purposes of inventions and also "scoops") to developing your weapons, recruiting characters, fishing, golfing (??), and of course dungeon frollicking. And the story moves along at a pretty good clip with dialogue and events interspersed between dungeons.

If there is a fundamental flaw in the game, and I think maybe there is, it's that, despite all the variety and fun, it gets a little repetitive. All games are, by nature, a bit repetetive, but it seems more transparent here. I can't help but ponder the fact that I'm going through floor after floor of random dungeons, the only goal being to find geostones, plant little houses, and advance the story (which isn't exactly Great Works material anyway). It bothered me in the first game, and it still bothers me here, although to a lesser extent. It's for this reason that I prefer Xenosaga, and even .hack, which seemed to satisfy me a little more. Oh, and sphere golf is HORRIBLE (great idea, awful execution--why can't I move the camera to see where I'm shooting?).

Overall, one of the best PS2 games to come out this year (so far), and certainly a stand-out, even in the RPG-heavy month of February (four good RPGs were released--.hack, Breath of Fire V, Dark Cloud 2, and Xenosaga: Der Wille zur Macht). I recommend this one with slight reservation. It's definitely not PS2's Zelda, as some have said. Not that it even SHOULD be; it is what it is.

A bonus paragraph: it's not as if the localization is really bad... it's just not really good. As someone learning the Japanese language, I would give about anything to have a Japanese vocal track on this game (like .hack, which gives one the option of choosing English or Japanese vocalization). I can't help but feel that its transition to English is something of a bastardization, as names have changed, liberties have been taken... which is probably what most Americans wanted anyway, but for someone who enjoys Japanese flavor in a game created by Japanese, I can't help feeling a little sad at how Americanized it ended up. The voice-acting is not bad, but neither is it good, and I didn't care for the vocal song accompanying the transition from prelude to the main story. With all the gigabytes available on a DVD (and the option for dual-layered, double-sided, etc), would it have been so difficult to include the original Japanese dialog to be heard while viewing the English subtitles? All games should do this. It wouldn't be expensive at all, and it would really please hardcore Japanophiles like me.

Dark Cloud 2 - Better than the first one!

WOW! This is by far the most addictive game I have ever played! I love RPGs the most and this one is definately worth the money. We had trouble with our old system because it was one of the ones with the bad disk reader. We went and bought a new PS2 just so that we could play this game! I can't get enough of it!

LOVE IT!!!!!!!!

As an active video game player and a lover of RPG's, I have one thing to say that summarizes the game: IT IS THE BEST GAME EVER! If a Darkcloud 3 ever comes out, and stars these same characters, it will be the very first thing I will buy that day. It's ability to let you make villages and create weapons and fight those bad guys gives it a double thumbs-up.

Entertaining;

Better than the first; I can say that.

It could use a bit more options on weapon building. :]

The Legend of Zelda's kid brother

When they say that Dark Cloud 2 is "the Playstation's Zelda", it's no exaggeration - this game plays like the Zelda series' kid brother, which is both good and bad. Being an adventure/RPG type game, this will demand many hours of gameplay. Since I'm a more casual gamer, if you want me to invest tons of time in a game like this, there needs to be at least one of two things: fun/addicting gameplay, or an interesting, well-told story. When it boils down to it, Dark Cloud 2 has neither, least of which the latter.

No, this game isn't BAD at all. The creative ideas presented in this game (the unique weapons upgrading system, the RTS elements) are fantastic, but the context they're placed in is very paint-by-numbers. It would really help a lot if the story was as inventive and creative as the gameplay. Since the easiest comparison of this game is to the Zelda series, this isn't to imply that the Zelda games are exactly Shakespeare. But Zelda at least has the benefit of having history and nostalgia on its side.

Granted, this is a solid game all around with some great gameplay ideas. But IMO if there were a more compelling story here, the perception would be more of Zelda's equal than its "kid brother".

2 stars only cause a small amount a effort was put into it

Let me start by saying do not listen to the reviews that the game is too easy. It just seems easy at the start that way. I do like the weapon upgrade but not when that is the only thing can you upgrade. Your defense is upgraded in the lamest way possible by finding littlt chests with pie in it. The game is 50 hours long but not worth it. The dungens as I am sure you heard are repetive bu the only thing worse than that is the battle music. It may be good with at the most 20 hours but not a second more. The only reason why I continued playing was to see happened next and it was something easily predictable. So do not I repeated do not make the biggest misake of your life.

Of Games and Cancer

I did not enjoy playing this game. The main reason is that when i was playing this game i was told that a growth on my left atrium was cancerous. After that i couldn't pay any attention to the plot or story, and whenever i turn this game on it makes me remember the radiation therapy. If you have cancer... don't buy this game.

Truely, this is an innovative game that improved from the first. I couldn't even stand the first because the dungeons got repetitive real fast. It was okay, but Dark Cloud 2 is a great RPG game that is very recommended. It looks similar to the classic Zelda ocarina of time, and to those who liked Zelda this is something you want to try. Playing this for 2 hours was fun. This game is not much of an exposition like Xenosaga which did had more movie scenes than gameplay time that were pretty long in that game which I heard from someone. DC 2 offers a lot of gameplay which will keep you playing for a while.
