Dark Cloud 2 is loads better than the original. The cell shaded graphics are a definite nice touch. Also the addition of a better georama(town building) system, a camera, inventions, and better overall gameplay make this a "everyone" hit. Those PS2 owners out there who were down and out that they don't have a Gamecube for the upcoming Zelda game, should pick up a copy of Dark Cloud 2 and go to town. You basically go around rebuilding towns in deserted areas of various places in the outside world. To build up you have to fight in dungeons around the town and get different stones. Here is a breakdown of the game.
Graphics- 5 stars- beautiful backdrops with cool cel shaded characters on top you can't beat them. They are not that kiddy.
Gameplay- 5 stars. I love the live action simplistic blocking and fighting. What is so neat is all the gadgets and stuff you can use, and the way you build up weapons kicks arse as well.
Ingenuity-5 stars. Great new ideas. I love the new camera/invention system(you have to see it to understand). Also the addition of animal morphing and a ridepod adds some variety.
Combat- 4 stars. It is fun but the endless dungeons can still be a bit repetitive.
Fun factor- 5 stars. Fighting mixed with town building and an rpg element mixed in. It can't be beat.
Overall , if u love action style rpg's this game is for you. It has a fun little fighting system and also a sense of adventure. It also has a lot of mini-games like fishing, and a techno type golf game. The fishing will keep you busy for hours. With great graphics, fun gamepley, a promise of over 100 hours of gameplay, and a pricetag of $ , Dark Cloud 2 just can't be beat.

OK, you got me. The only two RPGs I've ever played in my life are the Zelda Ocarina title for N64 and this one. This review will probably be most helpful for those who are familiar with the Zelda game.
1) Graphics for Dark Cloud 2 - beautiful
2) Gameplay - very, very similar to Zelda - including the targeting function (which comes in handy most of the time). The dungeons are the best part of the game (even if they become repetitive after awhile) and I liked the idea of building up your weapons as you went along. I also liked the idea that you had to keep repairing the weapons as you use them. It kept the game from being too easy. You also have to build up villages so people/places/things in the future will be restored to the way they should be.
3) Difficulty Level - well, this is where Dark Cloud 2 falters and keeps me from giving it 5 stars. There are no puzzles that present a challenge in Dark Cloud 2 like there were in Zelda. My wife and I had to consult a "help manual" several times in the Zelda game. There is no help needed in the Dark Cloud 2 game. Also, the bosses are disappointing. Unlike Zelda, where you had to learn a variety of methods to defeat the bosses, in Dark Cloud 2 it is just use your weapons and dodge their attacks if you can. It's not good when the dungeon monsters are tougher than the boss. It is also possible to beat most of the bosses in one or two tries (interestingly, the first boss called Halloween was the toughest one for me).
There's a few interesting side games/challenges to keep you entertained (collecting medals, fishing tourneys, fish races, and Spheda - a golf-like game).
My wife and I enjoyed the game, but we hope that they up the ante in the next version with some puzzles which require a little brain power to resolve and bosses that require a little more than what they have in this game.
This isn't Zelda, but it's the clostest thing to it

I never played Dark Cloud, and my friend said that game was dumb, so I decided not to. He said I should play Dark Cloud 2, I was like ooo k. When I rented it, I was almost instantly addicted to it like a drug. Then I brought it, and alotho I haven't finished it yet, it offers a ton of fun
Pros:
Beautiful Graphics
Very nice battle system
Nice mini games as well
Very good voice acting
Nice weapon system
Dungens are pretty fun
So far a pretty decent story
Weapons take a little while to build up, but the outcome is good
Unlike regular PS2 games that cost 50 bux, this is only 40, nice deal
I know that this game is going to be over 100 hours in gameplay
Like I said it ain't Zelda but it's the clostest thing to it
Cons:
I don't really like seeing Simcity in a Adventure-RPG
How come Monica has some pretty wicked blades, and Max has a wrench
Enimies Undoubtengly get repetitive
Man, I really stink at Spheeda
Bosses are pretty easy so far, I'm kinda dissapointed by that
Man this has to be the long lost cusin of Zelda. And This game is definitly one of the best games of the year, but I just got the wind waker and have to say, Dark Cloud 2 is close but not there yet. Well if u love RPGs, you'll love this, but if u have a gamecube and had trouble choosing, I'd have to with the wind waker, but hey, this is a real good game no doubt, and I recomend it to any fan of RPGs and adventure games

Overall, the game was great and fun, all the way through. There was plenty enough to keep a person occupied: golf-like play, fishing, braving the dungeons with prowess, weapon upgrading system, and even inventions.
The plot was okay, but could've had a major overhall, for a prolouge.
There was a couple of reasons I took off one star - yes, only one.
CONS:
1.) The monster transforming alteration, for Monica. Who would wasprecious money, and time, and even GIFTS to get badges, if you get sucky monsters in the beginning? It would take hourse just to get a good monster, after hours of leveling ONE up. And, still, you wouldn't get a cool one...
2.) The dungeons, they could've made them a little more interesting... something more on the line of a Zelda game maybe, you know, something that required some strategy? For instance: a 8 year old (My brother :P) Could play through the dungeons in the game easily, just by swinging aimlessly around at creatures. While, hardcore gamers such as myself, wastedtimethinking of strategy, when it's not required... *I got that part later -_-'*
3.) The whole, having to fullfill certain requirements to make 100% complete of one Georama place... and still, there's left "???" marks... often gets annoying. And makesyou waste time.
4.) [Bad & Good] The inventions, though, a wide-wide (I mean wide) selection of options to choose from to make inventions... it would have helped to have a recording system for remembering certain combinations you find, instead of having to go back and look for them again.
PROS:
1.) There was a long gameplay reliability, actually, making you want to go back, and play things over again, to perhaps get some photos you missed, or even, get items and new weapons you could've made.
2.) Great weapons system, way more recovery powders this time round. (Rip on Dark Cloud [1] :D ... :P) And there were some old weapons from the first game, and even some cool new ones. Though, there were some build-up, limitations, sometimes requiring you to kill certain eniemes... That was a bitch -_-
3.) The whole fish system was great, but was a little boring, and time consuming.
4.) [Good & Bad] The inventions were great, sometimes even allowing you to get items before they were mentioned, or known of if youmade the right combinations. A great thing indeed... And there was a great amount of choices to choose from, sometimes wasteful though. :P
SOME NOTES: My brothers 8, never goes outside (anymore) and just plays video games, soon on his way to reaching my level already on several games. -_- sadening, yet makes me sad looking, and proud. :P
I've got a life, play alot of games, and skate. So, I'm not just some guy locked away from the world like a loser.
I do alot of reviews, and Ihope you'll check this game out.
Pretty good overall

The GamePro School of RPG Design offers three tenets that all sequels should adhere to: One, the new game should be original; two, it should expand on the series' strong points; and three, it should fix or remove any annoying bits the original suffered from. Dark Cloud 2, the sequel to Sony's innovative yet maddeningly dull action/RPG, follows all three rules to the letter. Sniff. It's so rewarding to see such apt pupils.
Dark Cloud 2's core is much like the original's-Max and Monica prowl through random dungeons, discovering magic stones that serve as fuel for their side business of rebuilding villages. The chief new feature is Max's invention skill: You can take photos of nearly everything in the game and combine them to come up with new weapons and such. Is this game better than the last one? Well, it certainly looks better: The cel-a-delic characters are beautiful in motion, and the backdrops combine with the soundtrack to create this sort of homespun, European-countryside atmosphere for which RPG nuts will go weak in the knees. The control scheme is also completely stress-free, despite all the buttons it uses, and in-game help videos cover any sticky points. Most importantly-and this will make Dark Cloud fans very happy-Level-5 has fixed nearly everything wrong with the first game. You don't have to feed water to your party all the time; there are only two characters instead of five, so you're not wasting time raising useless party members; and each dungeon has several optional objectives, from time attacks to fishing to even an odd version of golf, so the endless fighting in the original is also gone forever. It still ain't perfect (the translation's off in spots, and finding HP/defense upgrades for Max and Monica is unfairly challenging), but it's close enough. Dark Cloud 2 is an excellent game in its own right, and it deserves far more than the dreaded "something to tide you over until Zelda" stigma.
Perfect

I am a 39 year old man, who has played games all my life. Having played 100's of games, and most role playing games for the PC, and many for the PS2, I have the knowledge to compare this to the competition. This is the first role playing game where it never seems like work. Everything is fun - very fun - extremely fun.
I have owned this for 2 weeks, and have already logged 32 hours on it, and I am not remotely tired of it yet. There are so many things to do, that each night I just play that parts that I am in the mood for. If you were to level up to the max all the weapons and monsters you can, it would take literally 100's of hours to do this. Really. And each monster plays very differently, where I want to take the time to level them up.
Some nights I just fish, others I explore the dungeons. Other nights I re-do different levels to find items, and to try and beat the goals for each level, while leveling up my weapons. I have played one level 10 times, trying to clear out the monsters fast enough to win the level - I have not completed yet, and can't wait to try this again tonight. And since there are 100+ levels to explore, I could play this game for months. I know boredom will set in, but it will be a long time from now. And if that happens, I will just go back and finish the story. I have no desire to finsih the story yet. I am taking it slow...doing everyhing I can before moving on.
Speaking of the story, it is simple enough to follow, but has enough surprises to be entertaining. This is one of the few RPG's that I actually understand what is going on!
To put it simply, this game is perfect. The best ever for RPG's, and I do not say that lightly. It is pure fun. I envy everyone that hasn't tried it yet...
Top ten reasons to buy this amazing game...

1. The battle- As you go through the "dungeon" levels, you battle monsters and collect items, money, and geostones (the geostones come a little later in the game), and can upgrade weapons. You can utilize over 100 items for battle or weapon upgrading. The levels take place in sewers, rainforests, and more. Later, you can use certain items to turn into monsters, and talk to other monsters of your type. Fun!
2. The construction- In Georama mode, you build entire towns using items you collect in dungeons, and move people in from your hometown. You unlock more items you can build with every dungeon level you complete, so you are always finding ways to improve your towns.
3. The roleplay- You choose what to do when, which character to do it as (Monica or Max), and what to buy/upgrade/work on.
5. The BEAUTY- This game has a plenty of gasp-in-awe beautiful scenes, and the cell-shading is nice to look at. I can show pictures from it to random people at school and get positive reactions. They really went the extra mile with the amilation and scenery. Lovely.
6. The fun details-Like fishing, for example-there is fish racing, a cooking stove to roast them on, an aquarium so you you can breed them, multiple kinds of bait, and little fishing contests.
7. The pacing-You don't have to be smart to play this. It doesn't have those "figure out this one problem or you're dommed" situations other games often have. If you just keep working at small goals, they'll all come together into something big. It's very hard to get stuck.
8. The plot-Very emotional, they're trying to save the world, but at the same time, Max is hoping to find his mother. The game is narrated with Max's letters to his mother, who left and never came back.
9. The equal-opportunity grounds- Great for first-time RPGers or for seasoned experts.
10. It's a steal at only $15.00!
In conclusion, this is my favorite PS2 game, and until they release a Dark CLoud 3, I suspect it will remain so.
Absolutely jaw-dropping!

Holy smokes, I can't believe how many different things you can do in one game. I'm roughly half done and there still seems like so much to do! You can dungeon crawl to build up your weapons, do simple side quests in your hometown, invent new items and weapons by taking pictures of practically everything during your travels, and build entire towns and then jump 100 years into the future to see the results! This is an RPG/Adventure game but the real time battle commands are so simple to pick up that even a turn-based junkie like myself fell in love with it. I would recommend buying a PS2 just for this game! Don't let the cartoon look of the game deter you either. If a 30-year old with a college degree can enjoy it, anyone can!
One of my favorite games.

I love this game so much. I still have not beat it and I bought it as soon as it came out lol. I like to play games slow plus I was in a coma for 2 months and recovered over the next year. Anyway this is an amazing game. What you must do is build cities up to 100%. You collect the materials from battles or from just going out and buying them. Then you use them to build your towns anyway you want. You can add anything, even if it is not needed. You will get a good feeling when you see your town at 100%. Then you can go into the future and walk through the town and see how it has grown or you can go into the past and see it. The graphics are great and have for a long time been my favorite RPG graphics. The controls are perfect. You can swing your wrench with no trouble at all. Also speaking of your weapon you can upgrade it. It will tell you when you have enough stats to upgrade the weapon. Another cool thing is you have a camera. You can take pictures of stuff and save the pics. Sometimes the puictures will give you an idea to build something. Be it a weapon or even a fish tank to keep you fish in. Yes there are fish and you have to feed them and bread the. It is very fun to get a hook and bait and go fishing in the little lakes and rivers in the game. The last thing I will tell you about is the ridepod. This is something that you ride around in. You can build it up over time and make it look totally diffrent. Also you can add new weapons and make it either fly or ride on weels. What it all comes down to is Dark Cloud 2 is an amazing amazing game. I never ehar that much about it which is crazy because it deserves all tyhe attention. Give it a try won't ya? If you played Dark Cloud and hated it do not worry this is alot diffrent but still the same. If that makes any sense.
Fun game, but can become repetitive.

Dark Cloud 2 is one of those games where you can tell the developers really put a lot of effort into making it. There're so many things in this game, the towns are extremely detailed, the graphics are rich and colorful, the inventive Georama System really let's you play with your imagination, among many other things.
The Georama System is perhaps the most fun in the game. You get build your own town while still keeping certain objectives in mind. For example, put the trees next to the river, put a wheelbarrow next to this house. You find parts for building your town by finding Geostones in certain dungeons.
The game's story is really nothing special. A couple of rag-tag adventurers are off on a journey to save the world from a dark force bent on conquering it. Yada yada yada, you know the drill.
My biggest gripe with the game however is the tedious dungeon crawling, which in actuallity, feels like a chore. You simply go around beating [up] monsters and once you find the item you're looking for and the key to get out, you're done. Then repeat about 10-20 more times to continue the story. Though there're optional objectives in each dungeon, it's hard to feel motivated into accomplishing them, unless you're one of those freaks who must complete everything in a videogame. And trust me, if you're a completist, you're going to spend a lot of time with this game.
Aside from optional dungeon objectives, the game also lets you take pictures of just about every miniscule object, character, and monster in the game. If you choose the right combination of objects you've taken a picture of, you will be able to invent an item. Some characters will give you hints on what combination will work, some you'll have to find out on your own.
Unlike a lot of RPG's these days where it's easy to become over-whelmed by strange terminology and a plethora of sub-menues, the game includes helpful tutorials whenever a new concept is introduced into the gameplay, making everything simple to understand.
Buy this game if you're into deep and expansive RPG's, but stay clear if you tend to get bored easily.
