The Best of all the Pokemon Games!

5 Rating: 5, Useful: 5 / 5
Date: December 20, 2003

Pokemon Gold and Silver is quite possibly the greatest of all the Pokemon Games released. New gameplay elements that truly took the Gameboy Color to its limits stand out as well! So much is introduced in Pokemon Gold and Silver that it stands out as not only one of the Best Pokemon games of all time, but also as one of the best GBC games of all time!

As far as graphics and eye-candy goes, this is a much bigger step above Red/Yellow/Blue. Smoother animations and much clearer visuals. Not to mention that its VERY colorful and completely takes advantage of all the colors the GBC can use! Also, in battle looks a lot better than in the previous versions. Animations look better and battles progress a whole lot faster!

As far as gameplay is concerned, its hard to put Pokemon Gold/Silver down. There is a new feature introduced in this game that once again shows that the GBC is more than we think it is. The internal clock has made the gameplay so much more interesting. The game actually changes between day and night and it changes based on how YOU set it up! Not only that but pokemon only come out at a certain time of the day. Some come out in the early morning and others come out at night!

Catching Pokemon hasn't changed much from Red/Yellow/Blue. The difference is that you now have several different kinds of pokeballs. You've got Heavy Balls to capture Heavy Pokemon, Level Balls that catch pokemon at rather low levels, Marine Balls for catching water pokemon and the list goes on.

The other interesting tidbit is perhaps the Pokegear that is introduced and the Cell Phone feature. The Pokegear makes it so you can carry more than just 20 items like before. You've got a seperate pouch for Balls, Key Items, TMs and HMs and just your normal healing items and such. The Cell Phone feature is nice and probably one of the best additions to the game! After you challenge some trainers you can ask them for their number. When you have their number they'll call you and do a few things. Some wlll ask for a rematch, some will tell you of Pokemon Swarms, some will give you an items. Most of the time, however, trainers will call to tell you stupid things, such as the status of their pokemon or how they beat other trainers.

Of course the whole story is to become a Pokemon Master. You get to explore a new world of Johto but in the end you'll end up having a nostalgic time in Kanto (the setting of Red/Yellow/Blue games) but in a different sense that once you defeat the elite four, you'll have to start a new journey and ultimately you'll end up fighting the toughest trainer in the game (the hero from the Red/Yellow/Blue Games).

The small gripes with the game. Well, for starters the Random Encounter rate is high at times which is rather annoying. Second, some trainers are just imopossible to dodge. In fact on most routes you'll have to fight all the trainers and it isn't by choice. You fight them because you HAVE to.

The music is great! In Johto at least. In Kanto the remix music of the Red/Yellow/Blue versions is terrible. Not to mention that when you get to Kanto, all the Pokemon are of low levels and are actually the exact same level they are in Red/Yellow/Blue.

The game is worth the buy though. This is one of thsoe addicting games that you'll find yourself coming back to over and over again and the best Pokemon game of them all! If you like Pokemon get Gold or Silver.

this game is awesome! I have the blue version, but gold is so much better! Its much more involved the blue/red/yellow. I like the breeding feature, which lets you get pokemon eggs to hatch.2 thumbs up!

They should have kept the original 151 Pokémon!

Overall this game is fun and a nice sequel to the original Pokémon adventures, the graphics have improved a lot and the sound has better quality. This game, just like Pokémon Silver has a lot more than Red, Blue and Yellow and is also more challenging, one of the greatest things this game can do is actually get you emotional, how? Well, if you were a fan of the original adventures, then returning to Kanto as a whole new person where everything has changed might get you pretty emotional.

The bad thing, is however the addition of new Pokémon species, I trully believe the original 151 were enough, now there's simply too many. The designs of many of these new creatures look "robotish" and "allienish", they don't have the charm of the original. Also, I began to lose track when these came out, I can't remember the names of all and it is next to impossible to complete your collection here, even with both packs, I believe you are required to get Mew to have full collection and Mew is nowhere to be seen, I hope the developers weren't specting each one of us to get Mew from a special event or by using a Game Shark. Anyways, overall this game was fun, lasted a pretty long time, enough to give you something to do for a while, but my point is there are way too many Pokémon.

The best game in the series

Pokemon 2 (Gold and Silver versions.) The second installment in the Game Boy Pokemon RPG series.

Nintendo's Pokemon franchise became a massive success in its native Japan relatively quickly. Although it took the franchise a little longer to catch on in America, it finally did catch on, and when it did, it took the nation by storm. Pokemon games and products sold like crazy, despite the fact that the franchise was virtually unrecognized in America at its time of release. Finally in the late summer/early fall of 2000, the second games in the series got an American release. How does Pokemon 2 measure up? Read on for my review.

PROS:
-THIS GAME GIVES YOU MORE OF THE SAME MONSTER CATCHING AND BATTLING ACTION THAT YOU HAVE GROWN TO LOVE IN THE FIRST GAME. To put it simply, if you liked the first game, it's quite unlikely that you won't like this one.
-THE GAME GRAPHICS ARE DRASTICALLY IMPROVED OVER THOSE OF THE PREDECESSOR TITLES. In this game, the graphics are not only improved, but the game is also optimized to make usage of Game Boy Color and Super Game Boy enhancements.
-IT'S NOT JUST A REHASH OF THE FIRST GAMES. Although the game uses the same general formulas, the game is entirely new, and the world is much larger this time around. Beat the game, and you can even go to the continent where the original game took place!
-NINTENDO DESIGNED THIS GAME WITH PLAYER CONVENIENCE IN MIND. Remember how in the first game you had to go through all those menus just to use an item (like your bike or fishing pole?) Well, in this game, you can set the select button to use an item! This really comes in handy and speeds up the general flow of the game.
-TONS OF NEW CREATURES AND ABILITIES. The original games had roughly a hundred and fifty-one creatures, and these games give you roughly a hundred new ones! This is too cool.
-THE GAME HAS AN INTERNAL CLOCK THAT KEEPS TRACK OF THE TIME OF DAY AND THE DAY OF THE WEEK. Different events happen at different times of the day and on different days. This makes the game all the more appealing.
-YOU CAN TRADE WITH ALL OTHER POKEMON RPG GAMES THAT PREDATED THE GAME BOY ADVANCE ONES. This will make it easy to get your hands on certain creatures from the old games. In fact, some the old creatures DO NOT appear in these games, so you're gonna have to do some trading to complete your Pokedex.
-THE GAME INTRODUCES THE CONCEPT OF BREEDING POKEMON. If you get a male and a female Pokemon together at the Daycare center, they just might lay an egg! This concept is necessary to get many of the new "baby" Pokemon in the game.
-THE GAME INTRODUCES TWO NEW POKEMON TYPES - DARK AND STEEL. Adding in the new types means you're going to have to rethink your gaming strategies - or create new ones entirely! The new types only add to the overall fun of the game.

CONS:
-MINOR COMPATIBILITY ISSUES WHEN TRADING WITH OLDER GAMES. For example, you can't send the new Pokemon species into your older game, nor can you send old species that have new moves. This is bound to get on your nerves, believe me.
-THE MYSTERY GIFT CONCEPT IS FLAWED. If you and a friend own a Game Boy Color, you can use Mystery Gift with your infrared ports to each get a random item, once a day. The only problem is that this requires a Game Boy COLOR - The Game Boy Advance doesn't have an infrared port!

OVERALL:
Pokemon 2 is, to date (as of July 4, 2004), the best game in the Pokemon series. In my mind, these games are even better than the new Game Boy Advance games, Ruby and Sapphire. If you can find one of these Pokemon 2 games in your local used games store, they are well worth picking up. Pokemon games aren't likely to get a whole lot better than these ones.

A very good try in the fading pokemon universe.

Set in WAkaba town, you can choose Cyndaquil, Totodile or Chikorita from Prof. Utusugi. I've played for 3 months and have all 8 Jolt-league badges! The elite team is out-standing and difficult to beat! My advice: Buy a guide book too.

Good game, but I prefer Silver

I got both Gold and Silver for Christmas. I started Silver first because I got that earlier, but I had fun with Gold too. There aren't that many differences, but there is the obvious that some Pokemon are found only in Gold. The reason I prefer Silver is for a couple reasons. First off, you can't catch Lugia until you've done every single thing in this game, unlike Silver, where you can catch him once you have a Silver Wing. I prefer Lugia to Ho-oh for some reason. Also, I like Silver more than Gold because Silver acts a lot more like advanced Red and Gold is like advanced Blue. I liked Red better than Silver because the Pokemon in Red only are more powerful, which I liked. Some of the Pokemon either in Blue only or rare in Red were pretty weak, like Caterpie. Other than that, there isn't much difference. You may prefer Gold. This is just a guideline for which version to pick. If you want an in-depth review of the actual game, check out my review of Silver version.

PS: I forgot to mention one major thing in the Silver review. Most Pokemon have both male and female genders. There are a few exceptions, like the Legendary birds, Magnemite, and Voltorb. You can use two Pokemon from different genders to make an egg, that will hatch into the lowest evolution of a Pokemon. You can also use Love Ball, made from PNK APRICORN, to catch Pokemon from the opposite gender. Pretty nifty, eh? Now you have more to catch.

much like silver, which is just as good, this game is what most consider to be the best in the series. Not only is it longer than any others but there is night and day and the league is a little easyer to beat so this is good for beginners. Also, there are all new pokemon that you can't get in the other games and you get to fight ash at the end of the game. All and all, i'd give this game 10 thumbs up, but I only have 2.

The most amasing game EVER

If you are thinking that pokemon gold and silver is exactly the same as red and blue, then you are WRONG. There are 100 more pokemon, and 200 more tecniques. You can breed pokemon to get baby pokemon and poke eggs. There are different pokemon found at different times and there are now evolutions and the two new types, Steel and Dark. You start in New Bark Town, where you get your first pokemon (cyndaquil, totodile, or chicorita). You then travel on and catch more pokemon and badges. There will also be novelties like team rocket take over, or someone arrived, you also are given an poke egg which hatches into togepi. There are pokemon such as the legendary dogs and ho-oh and lugia, you can also collect 16 badges. You trade with red, blue, yellow, and silver to catch all the pokemon. You can collect the phone number of the people you battle. You also have a watch, radio and any other cards you recieve to put into your POKE GEAR. The colour is amazing quality and will give hours of pleasure to anyone who is over 7. IF YOU BUY IT, YOU WILL NOT REGRET IT, TRUST ME

A great new world of pokemon!

In Pokemon Gold you are allowed into the land of Johto! The new map and 100 new pokemon make the game just as thrilling as the first trio. New features such as the cellular phone, putting the bike on the select key, and that wonderful new experience to next level bar make the new set of games even better than the first.

And people are wondering how Pokémon managed to get so big...this is an outstanding improvement over Yellow, Red and Blue. The grafics are (for a GameBoy screen) great and clean. The storyline is one that not only children but adults can get hooked on. For those of you that consider this a kid's game only, I dare you to borrow it from someone you know and try it. It's not as simple and easy as some would like to believe. Set your time carefully since you'll be playing in real time. Certain Pokémon will only come out at morning, day or night, for a Grand Total (provided of course, you have the other 4 games) of 250 (the 251st is not available in the games)! There are differently colored pokemon (hard to find), you can let your Pokémon breed (yes, they lay Poké-eggs) and gain levels at the nursery, new gym leaders (also the original 8 for a total of 16), your mom will save your money and some of the people you've battled will call you to fight again or tell you abought Pokémon sightings. Besides Ho-oh & Lugia you can also try to capture the 3 legendary Pokémon Entei, Raikou and Suicune. Bill calls you when your box is full, so you don't miss out on cappturing more Pokémon! The rest...is for you to find out!
