After playing CS/CSS (counter-strike and counter strike source) for many many hours a day for years I wanted to try something new. So a couple of weeks ago I picked up Star Wars Galaxies. I have a 6 mbit connection to the internet and a comp that is less than a year old. I'm ok with the $15 a month "access" fee. (BTW: CSS is free to play online once you buy the game, this will come into play later).
So I start out and put the discs into the drive. OK, ready to play. BZZZZZT, denied. There was a long laborious download of some kind before I could start to play. OVER AN HOUR! I think it took close to TWO HOURS. Come on! What is this crap, granted I had to wait for a short time to initialize Half-Life 2 but that was 10 minutes, but that was just to verify the game is not an illegal copy.
So I am thinking I'm ready to play now. BZZZZT, denied. I have to set up a "station access" account. Sigh, another 20 minutes to complete this tedium.
Ok, I'm ready to play now, I start my character. Cool, a wookie jedi, this should be fun. BZZZZZT, denied. Your "jedi" gets what amounts to a long stick and you are level one. Alright so what do I have to do to get a lightsabre already?!?
So I start my quest for jedi. You begin the game in a space station of some sort. The odd this is that this space station apparently has a zoo where creatures run rampant, pirates control the hallways, and every single droid is malfunctioning at the same time. HMMMMM, don't remember pirates in the movies....
So, I play for a few hours making 4 levels, go do this, kill a bunch of these, deliver this, talk to this person. Now I'm level 5. I want to leave this space station! BZZZZT, denied! AGAIN! Now I have to get a bunch of crap to "fix" the millenium falcon. Travel to another space station that oddly has and cave in it. (YES a cave, with rocks and everything!) I get additional attacks in my "toolbar" but my weapon does the same amount of damage. WHAT!
Now for the technicals: The graphics, can anyone say build engine? (duke nukem 3d), the bugs (not the ones you kill but the coding that makes the game run) are prevalant and numerous, too many to list. The gameplay, it's the same as CSS, basically you aim at a target and click furiously until you or the opponent are incapacitated. I think my "trigger" finger is getting carpal tunnel from clicking so much.
So, there is the "space combat" system. This should be different. Can you guess? BZZZZT, denied. Remember in kotor where you had to shoot the tie fighters from your freighter? That was more fun than this garbage.
So after about two weeks of intensive play, no lightsabre. (in episode III 6 year olds get them)boring space combat (where is my x-wing and what is a z-95 anyway?) A numb finger from clicking so darn much. Do i get my money back from the makers of the game? BZZZT, denied!
Account cancelled. I even uninstalled this piece of junk from my computer, and went back to CSS. If you want a good Star Wars game get KOTOR, KOTOR 2, Jedi Academy 1/2, Star wars battlefronts 1/2 . My order for World of Warcraft has been placed already
Avoid this game...even if you love Star Wars

This game started out long ago as very fun and promising, but has slowly dwindled down into a vast galaxy of nothingness. The Developers of the game have flat-out lied to the playerbase and implemented fraudulent practices. The last such issue was the latest expansion, which was sold to players under the premise that the game would be the same, and the day after purchasing it, the entire game rapidly changed with the new game enhancements. Several players are pursuing legal recourse against SOE and Lucas Arts, and the company has already offered a refund for the expansion to quash some of the complaints.
The interface is very, very awful. If you are a more mature player or have any difficulty with using your arms/hands to produce very fast motions, you will hate this game after a few hours. I know of some who simply are unable to play the game now because of how difficult it is to control your character in the game and enter combat.
The game is very dumbed down. It has been reduced from 34 professions down to NINE. They tell you how to play the game now. No longer can you mix and match skills to perform your own unique character, as soon as you log in, you choose whether you want to be Han Solo, Luke Skywalker, Princess, Leia or one of the few other characters who make you feel like you are simply just going through the motions and not living out your own special adventure. Before these changes, the game was very unique and diverse, which is what attracted so many from the start.
A few of the people here who are saying we're just whiners who don't like change are very wrong. We are consumers who don't enjoy being lied to and who don't wish to involve ourselves with companies who do not engage in ethical business practices. As a big Star Wars fan, I am imploring that those of you who are considering this game for yourself or for a friend or family member truly consider all of the comments here and just what state this game is in. If it's your first MMO experience, you are going to be very upset and probably not want to touch one again. I suggest looking to other games such as WoW, Dark and Light, EverQuest II or other games which are very fun and have their own uniqueness. If you are a long-time MMO gamer, stay away from this. It is the bottom of the barrel for MMO games. There is no content, numerous bugs which are ignored by developers, and a lack of vision for what the goals are in this game for a player.
Used to be fun

The developers of the game scrapped the game system, for the second time, and put in this new unfun game system. The combat is way too fast. The combat is also very stupid looking. Looks like your charcter is a hyperactive monkey.
Hugely Disapointed

I have played this game since day 2, "The first day was bugged"
and I have played it till recently, the original game was awesome I couldnt get enough of it and then they come out with the NGE-New Game Experiance and it has become a fiasco. All my friends that I have meet online have disapeared, My character is not playable,(by the way I was a jedi, so if you want to be Jedi be aware)and the keymap makes absolultly no sence.
In my oppinion do not buy this game unless they make a lot of fixes to it.
Complete ripoff

After several months of playing Guild Wars and reading these reviews today I can finally say that I am over all the dissappointment that SWG made me feel when the game changed...the 1st time (C.U.) and the 2nd time (N.G.E.)...was i a "bitter old schooler?"...yeah...i suppose i was! Shouldn't that make my point even more valid. The C.D.Rom i bought 2 years ago is not the same game that is currently implemented. I would be just as "bitter" and dissappinted if my "Red Hot Chili Peppers" cd ended up playing "Boy George" after 2 years...wouldnt you?!?!?...But I accept the fact that the SWG that I miss will never be back....And thats O.K. cause GUILD WARS ROCK...ROFLMFAO!!!!!!!Too bad for you SOE. GO ANET!!!!!!!!

Its not just about the game changes.
This should be a warning for all who choose to invest their time and money into this game.
Sony Online Entertainments treatment of their customers is the real issue here.
Most other publishers release a FINISHIED game, then need a few patches here and there to fix gameplay issues.
This is two years later and the issues that were problems still exsist, with a new skin and targeting system.
This is something that required many months of Beta testing, not two weeks worth and pushing it out to paying customers and let them test it.
So be warned, you may like it, you may not. I personally don't.
But save yourself the trouble of spending good money and try the free trial FIRST. It will be worth it for the long run if you don't like it.

Sony has decided to completely change the whole game after almost 3 years of game play. They have dumbed down the whole game to try to encourage children to BUY (not play) the game.
**This USED to be a great game. Sony has implemented 1/2 tested, 1/2 thought out changes that no longer make this a fun or immersive game.
Combat:
They HAD a fast paced unique combat system that was fun to use and NOW they have some 1/2 thought out fps style system that is clumsy, slow, and unrealistic.
Professions: They HAD 34 professions to chose from...
NOW they have 9.
Jedi: Jedi WAS a prestige class you earned after so many force quests. It WAS powerful and fun. NOW...it is a joke. You can choose jedi when you first start playing but you are very weak, sabers do less damage then any blaster AND you have no defense so you are constantly getting killed. BORING!!
Server Population:
Servers used to be listed as heavy because so many people used to play and enjoy this game. NOW they are all listed as VERY LIGHT.
Missions: So many of the missions are bugged you can't complete them now. Creatures are SO strong you can't kill them even with a group of 8.
Save your $15 a month for something else.
