I have played it and I must say, I think its quiet a game, I think that veterans have an axe to grind and so be it, but people who just want some star wars need to give this game a go. there is even a free trial I beleive that people can play!

All the negative reviews are from years ago

Ignore the negative reviews. If you look at all of them, you will see that they say "I played this game x number of years ago and then they changed crap and it made me all sad and bitter so now it sucks worse than anything has ever sucked." The positive reviews say "I started playing a few weeks/months ago and am having a blast.

Translation: Those that didn't like change, flame this game to get back at the company for making them sad they didn't get their way. Current, non-bitter, non-whiney, honest reviewers will tell you how the CURRENT state of the game is.

Join us. Download the free trial. It's fully unlocked now so you can play as much as you want on any planet (outside of the ToOW expansion) for 14 days. If you like it, sweet. Look me up. I"m Vyfop on the Lowca server. If you don't, PLEASE post a legitimate review detailing what you did and what you didn't like so new people can actually read a balanced group of reviews of the current game rather than this constant complaining from people who are just sad their jedi had to share the universe with other jedi.

Give it a true test!

StarWars Galaxies has been a long standing favorite of mine. Yes it has gone through alot of rough changes but it is far from ruined. The game now is evolving. The system is now a bit easier but far more fun. The combat is fast-paced and a bit less confusing. Players are urged to go tackle the many dungeons with their groups/guilds and take part in the Galactic Civil War. SWG does not suck now, nor is it ruined. SWG is just different and if given the test, I am sure you all will enjoy it.

As usual, the truth is somewhere in the middle...

I purchased the Starter Kit about four months ago, with much trepidation. Like many of the reviewers here, I had several friends who were with the game from the beginning and LOVED it. With the various changes, they, like most of these reviewers, felt the game had been oversimplified, their hard work had been ignored, their needs and requests from the game designers were ignored, and that the game was simply BAD. Having never played the previous versions, I simply cannot agree or disagree with them.

I have also read the reviews that RAVE about the game, and the counter-reviews that claim that those reviews were written by Sony Online Entertainment cronies designed to convince new players that the game has been improved to such an extent that it's simply the BEST MMORPG on the market. Without proof that these reviews were ACTUALLY written by SOE supporters, I cannot say conclusively that the people who wrote these reviews really feel the way they say they do, but I am willing to accept that there are people who truly feel that this is the greatest MMORPG ever.

Having now played the game for about three months, I can honestly say the truth is somewhere in the middle. First, the good. The game IS very Star Wars immersive. If you ever dreamed of piloting a TIE fighter, or an X-Wing, wielding a lightsaber, visiting the famous locales of the films, or interacting with the saga's iconic characters, you can do all those things here. The graphics are simply gorgeous. The various locales all look and sound very much like they should. The character creation system allows for much detail and variety in look.

The gameplay is very easy to pick up and understand. The nine character classes represent the main types of characters anyone would want to play, as far as I'm concerned. Yes, maybe a more unique/individual character type is no longer available, but I can't imagine THAT many folks really wanting to play them anyway. Also, from what I've seen, the seven "combat" classes are fairly evenly balanced so that one class doesn't have an unfair advantage over the other. The other two classes (Trader and Entertainer) are more social/economic classes not truly designed for combat anyway.

The game is very free-flowing, allowing for all types of play, from strong roleplaying to grinding to simple just "go with the flow" and let your own curiousity dictate where you go and what you do. If adventuring or combat is not your thing, you can socialize, build a house, start a guild, run for mayor of your town, build a financial empire or any number of other fun things.

Contrary to many of these reviews, I found the in-game support to be VERY helpful. All my queries were responded to quickly, the in-game folks were polite, and when I had to call SOE, I got through to a person (although the wait was a bit lengthy), who helped me immediately and answered my questions accurately and in-depth.

Finally, a lot of people are complaining that the game does not really accurately represent the "story" as put forth in the films (eg. lots of Jedi running around when the Empire was supposed to have destroyed them all). While there is some truth to this, because it's a game that has some life to it, it doesn't trouble me that much. To have a Star Wars game that does not allow players to play Jedi just doesn't make sense to me, since being able to wield a lightsaber and manipulate the Force is what draws many of us to Star Wars in the first place. So, while the game does not strictly follow the Star Wars storyline as established in the films, I can forgive that because in order to allow the game to be interactive, functional, and fun, the game has to allow players the chance to ALTER or AFFECT that history.

Although I personally have not yet engaged in Player vs. Player combat, I have watched several large scale battles between Imperials and Rebels that look like great fun and seem very challenging.

The space combat aspect of the game is terrific and is much more fun and challenging than the land/planet-based combat.

Now the bad. The game, in its current iteration, is almost TOO easy. The only thing that happens to a player when he is defeated is he or she is "cloned" at a location that may be far away from the quest he is trying to complete, and so he has to spend a lot of time travelling over the gorgeous landscapes to return to the location of the quest. I do feel that there should be some kind of penalty for defeats in order to make the game a bit more challenging. Indeed, at first, the game was SO easy that I almost gave up on it as I just didn't see it as being challenging enough. HOWEVER, as I continued to play and just let myself enjoy the journey of the game rather than the goals of advancing in level, I found it to be really addicting, as you just wander the galaxy and IMMERSE yourself in it.

There are quite a few little bugs in the game. NPCs that respond with "developers code" rather than words, quests that don't work, etc., but none of these bugs are devastating or halt gameplay completely.

So far, as far as I can tell, while the classes are fairly evenly balanced in combat, there is very little real difference between classes and races. A Jedi has some different "skills" then a smuggler or commando, and a human may look different from a Mon Calamari or a Zabrak, but ultimately, except for the names of the skills and how they "look" graphically when you use them, there seems to be little real difference between classes and races. To be honest, I am still fairly new to the game so there may be more differences than are apparent to me, but right now I'm not seeing HUGE differences, like you see in other MMORPGs where each class, race or profession has very clear roles and are quite distinct in ability and function from one another.

So, as I said, the game is actually somewhere between being great and being terrible. If you want to immerse yourself in the Star Wars universe without concerning yourself too much about whether or not what you are doing "fits" in the chronology/history of George Lucas's saga, this game is for you. If you enjoy playing a computer game to look at it, roleplay in it, and are willing to enjoy a journey of discovery rather than accomplishing a series of increasingly difficult goals, you'll enjoy this game.

If, on the other hand, you want a game with clearly defined goals that quickly and efficiently lead you up a ladder of levels; present you with tougher and tougher challenges as you move up that ladder; punish you for ineffective play and reward you with skilled, intelligent play; strictly adhere to the Star Wars mythology as presented in the films; or have distinct professions/classes/races that are weak in some areas, strong in others, and are most effective when working together, you'll simply HATE this game.

As for me, I'm enjoying it enough to keep playing it and to recommend it, if you're looking for the first type of game experience I've described and not the second. Like any MMORPG, it's not perfect. It could benefit from some additional difficulty, and from a bit more distinction between races and classes, and I'm sure such changes will be coming. But, seriously, if you want to play a MMORPG set in the Star Wars universe, it's literally the only game in town, and as such, it's not such a bad place to spend some time.

You mean there are other people on this server?

I played this since it went live all those many moons ago, through the combat upgrades through to the NGE. I stayed longer than most vets, I only cancelled my account a couple of months ago, as I wanted to give them a chance. Well they blew it. You used to interact with others. You had to dive into a bar to fix your BF and while you were there you could interact and make friends. Well they got rid of that a while back. Eventually they sort of brought it back with entertainer buffs but not like it used to be. People got groups to together to run missions. Now until you get to the high level missions which require you to be strong most can easily be soloed. The AI which used to be good got dumb, though that was happening long before NGE otherwise I could not have soloed the Warren! Now you're lucky if you run into anyone else. The servers seem deserted. Strange ghost towns devoid of other players. They talk of making it more Star Warsy. Well this is set between Ep IV and V. Exactly how many Jedi were there then? Had SOE just fixed bugs and added content to the original or even the CU releases, I would have recommended you try this. Now it a waste of money. Remember there's a monthly charge!

Its Over

OK. Lets face it, SWG has changed. BUt ALL MMO's must change if they want to be sucessful over time. All of the people that complain about the changes that SOE and Lucasarts made to the game are the same people that complained about there not being a jedi class, then they complained that smugglers weren't important enough and their list went on, and on, and on, etc. Some people just need to live in misery to be content, and those are mostly the people that write the reviews for SWG on here. I have played SWG off and on since the Beta. I have played a total of 12 MMO's and I keep comming back to SWG. Why? Because its still the most in depth, personalized, integrated easy to master and most well designed MMOs out there. YOu still can do anything, you still can be apart of the galaxy with your own house decorated how you want, on any planet you want and 90 percent of all the objects in the game you can interact with! All things that are in the in-game economy are made by players, for players. If you buy an x-wing capacitor and you live in ohio then another player from Denmark might have spent the time to make it so the statements about the in-game economy being messed up and the professions of entertainer and crafter are useless is totally false. No other MMO has what SWG does, and thats why to all those who say I waste my money on SWG, I disagree. I say I've already wasted my money on 11 other MMO's that were not SWG and I wont make that mistake again.

An Attempt at a Fair Review

As a long time player of Galaxies I feel I must try and balance out my in-game brethren who are using this space to vent. There is much to be upset about in the Galaxy these days and they have every right to voice their concerns. I am just going to give my own perspective.

The game itself is as it always has been...what you make of it. The design itself is simply stunning. The graphics and sound are done very well and the ability to immerse yourself in the setting is as real as any. Right now (yes I'm playing atm) I am on Dathomir, on the shores of a narrow river. I can hear the water rushing behind me (5.1 sound was recently fixed) and I can hear my footsteps as I stomp around (due to a macro running that I wrote to not log off while afk). As I stand here in first person and look around the planet unfolds its beauty around me. It really is cool!!

I run a small trading post on Tatooine that is quite busy. I sell mainly ship equipment, weapons and high end loot. In terms of how these changes have affected the economy, my sales have not slowed down. I am very wealthy. Now, due to the latest overhaul (NGE) MANY of my items became garbage over night. There was no warning of these big changes. I logged in and 'poof' my entire stock of high end weapons became useless. I personally used a pistol, one of the finest on my server, that was worth around 8 million credits (to give perspective, a good pistol costs perhaps 10-50k). It was rendered useless. I can now sell it for about 5k.

As for customer service, I have had my ups and downs. I will say that no matter what my issue was I DID receive pretty fast responses, just not always the response I wanted. The other day a Customer Service Rep put an item into my inventory less than 24hrs from me asking for it. On the other hand, I had a week long battle with the CSRs over one stupid question they just couldn't seem to answer. In any case, I have found the support to be there and in most cases responsive if not downright fast and helpful.

As for the interface, if you buy this now, you will never know what you missed. When they revamped the interface, I bought a speed pad which helped tremendously. I have very few issues with the interface, except of course that I miss the old one.

The professions have been 'slimmed' down to the point where you have few options. I was a VERY diverse character and now I'm not. I have heard from the Developers that they are working on bringing in more diversity to professions. This is good. As it stands its not bad, its just not as good as it was.

Combat is probably the best thing to come out of the last 'update'. It is much more fluid and fast and yes even realistic. [It just started raining and thundering on Dathomir]. I for one like it much better. There are some targeting issues that are bothersome, especially specials (like Healing) that do not always fire. They say they are working on this, which they need to.

Overall, I still enjoy the game immensely. I don't like the way the latest changes were sprung on the community with no warning and rushed into the game just so they could get this current 'Starter Kit' on the shelves for Xmas. That does suck. BUT if you like Star Wars now is a good time to get into it. SONY's butts are on the line with this game and they know it. They 'seem' to be working very hard to make this the popular game it once was. I'm hoping they do.

I say, for 15 bucks and a 10 day free trial, what have you got to lose. The fun in this game is where you make it. I still have a nice group of friends who play and there IS really a ton to do. Give it a go...I'll see you around the Galaxy.

A MUST HAVE FOR ANY STAR WARS FAN!

The changes sony has implimented may have annoyed some of the veterans but i'm pleased to say its a very accessible star wars MMO I had always hoped SWG would be. When the game was first released I gave it a shot but there was literally no content. Your simply dropped into a city and given a crappy pistol and no guide. your on your own. the game was overly ambitious and had no real direction. I didnt stay long with other games out there that had a much clearer vision

the New Game Enhanments, as they are called are quite excellent. Its all content. the classes seems kind of similar at first but as you level up and start picking up the special moves you really begin to feel like your in your class. I play medic myself and as I picked up the special heals and buff abilities other new players were inviting me to be in thier groups. Its an excellent game and I appluad SOE and LucasArts for having the guts to admit thier original game was flawed and making this considerbly better game.
