You will find many negitive and positive feed back on this game, the reason is due to a recent upgrade known as the NGE or New Game Enchancements. Our community currently is split into two factions, those who blindly support it and those who blindly condem it. The community is in a state of chaos, and the devs are only fueling the situation by telling customers "If you don't like it, tough".
Let me try and break it down for you.
Graphics are alright, nothing special really. Infact the graphics are nothing compared to the free MMO's like guild wars. They're old graphics that were devoloped about two and a half years ago. So if you are not concerned with the look of the game, this game should suffice.
The community is great, filled with very mature and intelligent players (for the most part), I am willing to bet that the majority of our playerbase is over the age of 18 so don't expect the word "noob" or anything like that to be thrown around to much. If you want to involve yourself with a game filled with good and mature people, this is the best game you could ask for.
Although I must give you all an advanced warning on bugs, at times the game can become completely unplayable due to an uncanny amount of bugs that take the devs weeks, months, and even years to fix. Big or small don't expect much from this end of things. Customer support is more of a joke then help. The ONLY way to get help from submiting "tickets" is to threaten the CSR's that your going to report them to the BBB and every gaming magazine and website if they don't help you, abd I speak out of personal experieneces. Do not expect customer support, its almost non-exsistant in this game.
The NGE has changed SWG's combat system to reflect a mix between "Diablo 2" and "Resident Evil 4", it shows many chararistics of a FPS yet it also workes like a "Click and kill" combat system seen in diablo 2. There are also problems with the "classes" or "professions", they are all filled with bugs that SOE has not fixed in two weeks time, infact this NGE was launched to live to early and has caused many bugs and breaks in the game.
The interface and combat has been "Dumbed down", once it was a very interesting and complex system involving skill in knowing what abilities to use and when to clicking on the target and killing them. The system is quite basic and may become "too simple" for you as complexity was what kept the player base occupied. Now you are without choice, choose a profession and you have that for life.
This is the games second over haul and they seem to make these upgrades every few months, if you buy this game you are buying 4-5 different ever changing games. While combat is more engaging and fun, it gets boring and tedious after the first two weeks. Also, if you expect to come and play as a jedi, don't be to surprised when you find yourself being destroyed by every ranged PVPer, every NPC (thats 30 levels below you), and every boss. The jedi profession was dropped from the greatest class in the game to the utter worst.
I'm trying to remain as positive as possible, but the company, and this game is not worth money. Infact some suggest that we should be paid to play this game as BETA testers. This game is not ready, and the playerbase is leaving. Come to SWG and expect the following:
- Low end graphics
- Empty servers void of any players
- Buggy professions, quests, objects, terrain, etc.. etc..
- No customer support
- Periodic game overhauls
- Changes to the game core
- "Dumbed Down" Interface
- Forced grouping
- Long wait time for fixes (could be years)
- Boring combat system
- No diversity
- Horrible amount of lag
- Little if any content
- Space is very fun
- Dead GCW
- Pay to be a BETA tester for an unfinsihed game
- Ignored game suggestions
All in all, look at the reviews for WoW or DnL. Thats where most of our playerbase is heading.

This game will amaze you at first because of it's beautiful planets and surroundings but your amazement will quickly move to boredom as far as gameplay. Yes, I was a pre-NGE (New Game Enhancement) player but I'm not a bitter vet trying to take a swipe at SOE (Sony Online Entertainment)for the recent game changes. In fact, I gave SOE the benefit of the doubt, logging onto the game religiously to play daily. I am a huge Star Wars fan as is my entire family(who also played). Each day I logged onto the game trying to find one thing to love about it to keep me wanting to play. I tried different professions which seemed to be so close in design that only the weapon used by each profession seemed to make them different. There is little diversity in players meaning little ability to individualize your character. I tried 52 different quests, many of which either had bugs in them or quickly became redundant and I even tried the new expansion which is lacking something I can't quite put my finger on, although the environments are nice to look at. I've noticed there are hardly any people logged on to the game now which is what a MMOG is all about, the interacting with other online people (I've only looked at 9 different servers though). Consequently, it is hard to find groups which are necessary to maximize experience points which is basically how you advance in level. My suggestion is to wait on the purchase of this game until SOE works the bugs out and makes it an online experience and virtual world you can lose yourself in and individualize again. I've given the NGE a fair try for the past 25 days and have to say I'm throwing in the towel as I've truly lost interest. Save your $15 a month subscription fee for 6 months, then check into the game again. Maybe then it will be what you're looking for. That is what I'll be doing. If you are super curious, at least do the trial version before spending your money.

I started playing SWG just weeks after it was released to the public. I had heard about it from good friends who played the BETA and showed me around a bit in a remarkably immersive online universe with boundless possibilities, and nearly complete player control. SOE had even been so kind as to allow players to create their own cities and manage them first hand! Not only that, but there were many parts of the Star Wars Universe you could explore and be a part of without too much trouble.
Sad to say but this game no longer exists. Hacked and slashed from time to time, the free and clear and extreemly engaging universe that was brilliant so long ago has almost none of its origional features. The depth of abilities in classes, counted not only by sheer number but also by usefulness and relevance, has been all but eliminated. Previously characters could look forward to purchasing new armors or weapons created by their favorite crafters as soon as they earned a new rank or ability within their profession. Newly implimented is a level system similar to that of all the other, more generic, MMORPGs where a certain, seemingly arbitrary, combat level must be reached before equipment is used. Similarly, the often underlooked and novel crafting classes have become utterly useless, in part do to the inability to use what few items they may craft, and their inability to procure the resources needed. Previously, someone playing SWG may have decided that their character would be only a crafter and trader, and be able to make it in the SWG universe by guile and charisma to aid their crafting and business skills. This is simply not the case anymore.
Further, combat has lost all flavor due to the patch which took it back several years. It is not like WoW, but simply a ruin of what it used to be. Classes have been utterly profaned as well since the populous of most servers is now comprised of about 60-80% jedi. The game has strayed far from where it began, and can no longer be representative of a deep and enriching MMO experience, or a deep and enriching Star Wars experience. That vision faded from SOEs sight long ago it seems, and a tainted shell of a once magnificent revolution in online gaming is what is left.
NGE is terrible

This game is dying, do not help it live any longer than it has to. Try the game called "Dark and Light" instead. LucasArts screwed the players, and Sony screwed the players. They changed a game completely AFTER it had been going for 2 years. No legacy servers either.
The game is very buggy, it is terribly unbalanced. After level 30, you will have nothing to do unless you give SOE *more* money for expansions.

I am not veteran of the game and have only played it for two months so I cannot criticise the CU as I have no experience of it before that. However, I found the game rather enjoyable with it's vast scope and addictive complexity.
Online gamers vary from really helpful (giving advice, etc) to complete sink plungers who aren't helpful, but this is the case for most games on the net.
The game can be quite frustrating at times (being killed by a butterfly, long dull tasks, etc), however, the game was enjoyable enough to warrant a monthly fee.
However, the revamp on November 15 (or around that time) has made the game unplayable (literally).
Before, the game lagged slightly in places (crowded environments) but was bearable. Now, the player angle has changed so it is half-third person and half-first person (not that I minded too much) but now the game is unplayable in that it not only jerks but resembles a slow slideshow. I have a Geforce 5200 fx (patched up-to-date), AMD 64 3200+, a gig of ram. Not the best PC on offer but it can play all my other online games really well. I am still in the same galaxy, but now, since the 'revamp' it has made the game sour (I can't even play it long enough to know what else has changed).
Maybe I am a one-off and other people have no problems. But, if you are not too sure, download the 10 day free trial (a sure sign by developers and producers that things are not going well) and see for yourself. If you like it, buy it and enjoy it. If you don't, then you have saved yourself a tiny fortune.
Try the free trial first and see for yourself.
Far too many bugs and poor customer support

If you want to get into the Star Wars world I recomend Star Wars Republic Commando instead (GREAT gameplay, no monthly fees).
In SWG, I got tired of running into bugs for most of the adventures/quests I decided to take. I would not recomend to pay for it. It seems to be a lot of new online games being released to play an old and buggy one.
Player chat rooms and forums need to be moderated/filtered a lot to control upset clients from expresing their justified frustration.
It could have been a VERY nice and fun online game (some people say it was, before changes SOE introduced some time ago)... but instead I find it now very buggy, poorly patched, poorly supported and full of inconsistecies.
I used to love this game. :(

I had played this game for the past 2.5 years, and to put it honestly and easily, I loved it. I worked my butt off, played with my kids, my wife played, my son helped me grind out the crafting professions in the hopes of getting a jedi (When it was good, and it was tough to get).
I got my jedi, after completing all 32 original professions in the game, which were some of the coolest and diverse ideas I had ever seen in a game. My jedi (and the other professions) were all awesome, with cool animations for your specials, strategy, good content, and a GREAT community. I always had 20+ friends online, or more. My guild was active, and the game was fun. I made Jedi Knight, and advanced up the light side "pwning" the Dark Jedi at every turn. I made it to Sentinel 4, and the game was changed to the SWG: CU in April of 2006.
The CU was the beginning of a cancer for SWG. Never mind the fact that the original had bugs. They were working on them, slowly but surely. The CU (Combat Upgrade) really dumbed down the game, added monsterous bugs, decreased loot, and made grouping mandatory for Jedi and PvP. Jedi used to be what a Jedi was in the movies - REALLY TOUGH TO BEAT. After CU, they were severly hampered. People kept playing though, but it was never really as fun as pre-cu. I started wondering why I was logging on. Still, I did so for 6 months.
NGE came out in mid-November, promising a return to the quick combat, and a more starwarsy feel. I was thinking Pre-CU style. NOPE. They completely ignored their player community and made SWG a VERY poor FPS. combat is nearly impossible as a jedi, and if you are fighting against someone with a gun, you are probably going to die. It took me 10 months of playing to get my jedi, and now it is worthless. Also, there are no longer 32 diverse professions with many different abilities, there are now 9 professions that you can be, and the abilities plain old suck. My wife quit.... My kids became disinterested. My 8 year old son even called it a babies game now. I was disgusted and cancelled after 2 weeks of NGE. My account is still active till christmas day, but I probably won't log in except to give my stuff to the VERY FEW friends that are still around.
I urge you to wait for SWG 2 if they ever make it, and avoid this one. Play City of Villans or World of Warcraft. Play EQ2 or Dark and Light. Wait for Star Trek Online. Just don't wast your hard earned money and time on this. It is no longer worth it.
Have fun out there, everyone.
Do not buy this game, after trying it and being a 2 year vet of the game this is probably the worst game on the market.

Do not buy this game, these changes turn this from an RPG to an FPS game, the player base have been cheated by SOE & LA.
This game is run by Sony Online Enterainment, they have poor customer service, the game is bug riddled and these bugs will never get fixed.
SOE will at a wim change the entire game play overnight, with changes that are not what the established player base want. They are planning to change the game on Nov 15th from an MMORPG to an MMOFPS style game. This is not an RPG style game any more it is set to be a FPS style game.
The playerbase is outraged at the changes. The main reason, ONE DAY after they release an expansion that SOE charged 30 US Dollars for they announce the change from MMORPG to MMOFPS which in turn renders more than half of the content in the expansion useless.
In the old game many players spent months attaining Jedi status, now with the proposed changes you can be Jedi from the moment you logon. If you want to play jedi go play something like KOTOR or one of the other Jedi games as this is crap. If you wants to play an FPS Star Wars game play something like Battlefront 2 or any of the others they are way better than this. You will be charges 15 US Dollars a month for something you can pay for once in the store and get far more enjoyment out of. The one thing that made the original great was the community this just got trashed by SOE and Lucasarts. In short do not get this game, it is a rip off.
If you have any kind of disability this game will be unplayable by you. The new UI is horrid, it looks like it was designed by a blind monkey. The controls are overly complex and awkward to use, if you have 3 hands you will be able to play otherwise, leave the game on the shelf of the game store and move onto an other game.
I am less of a StarWars fan because of this game :(

This game is being downgraded for the PS3:

I am less of a StarWars fan because of this game. Beware a new downgrade is planned for the PS3 release which will make all your character building obsolete (this is not an overstatement in the least). Past downgrades were the CU and NGE. This game started with 30+ professions, now there are 9 with little difference between them. This has become more of a FPS then a mmorpg. There is huge turnover of players. This mmorpg has been a huge rip off. Only thing that would call me back is pre-cu servers and promise not to issue anymore downgrades
This game used to be fun...

I've been playing SWG since a few weeks after the launch. When the game first came out it was amazing. About 6 months ago they put a "combat upgrade" through, in an attempt to balance the combat system. All they did was unbalance it more. I hated it, but stuck with it and got used to it as most of my friends decided to stick around as well. Then SOE gave us a whoppin two week notice that the combat system would be changing again. Not only did they give us such a short notice, but they did this with numerous people who paid for their account in advance, and right after a brand new expansion came out.
Unfortunately I must say, what once was a great complex game is now a boring easy game. They've removed all the complexity and replaced it with bugs, lag, and horrible graphics.
Sorry, but SOE has lost my business, as well as a lot of other people's business as well. I feel sorry for all the people who just bought the game, and decided to quit right away. Do yourself a favor and don't buy the game.
