Played the game for a few days - what I thought was a role-playing style game turned out to be a terrible hybrid click-and-shoot experience (terrible in comparison to real shooter games, that is) with more lag, bugs and lack of complexity than I expected from a Star Wars product. Not quite sure what SOE seems to have done, but it's easy to see that the current game is a shell of the game that was originally offered (and even described on the box).
Do yourself a favor and buy yourself (or your kids) a real Star Wars game like Battlefront 2 or a well-developed character game like World of Warcraft. I don't mind the $15 cost of the SWG Starter Kit itself, but in no way is this game worth the $15 a month SOE charges for a subscription rate.
An Abysmal Game with Zero FUN

I can't warn you off this game enough. SOE and Lucas Arts showed a blatant disregard for their long time customers by publishing this 'New Game Experience' with only two weeks notice, and one day after many customers paid $29.95 for the Trial of Obiwan expansion. A refund for ToOW was offered, but people who had long term subscriptions are now stuck in a game they do not like and did not ask for.
The NGE as it is called is worse then a beta program. The User Interface is completely unplayable. Jedi is a useless profession. Commando, Spy and Trader are broken professions. Most of the 130 exciting new quests are bugged and unfinishible. They turned a challenging game that let you adapt and change into a quasi first person shooter with zero personality and zero fun.
Please stay away and save your money.
The Last Update -NGE (New Game Enhancment) Killed the Fun

This game was one of the best online games ever made. You should know that you are not playing that game anymore. November 2005 the game was revamped and the change is known as NGE (New Game Enhancment). However; they managed to take a great game and drain it of all that made it fun to play. Before NGE you had the freedom to write your own StarWars story. You started new and could take almost any path. You could be a doctor, rifleman, swordsman, weaponsmith and over 29 other choices. You could even combine between two or more. It was so much fun playing this game as you did whatever gave you more joy. Not anymore, all charcters kill in the same amount of time. All armor protects the same amount. All resources are 100% the same. Trade is dead and so is crafting because you get everything you need when you start the game. Even though the stats read diffrent from weapon to weapon and armor to armor they perform 100% the same. To complicate things even more, on-screen messages show that weapons are diffrent when actually all are the same.

There are a few people who are still rating this game pretty highly, it's up to you if you listen to them, but I can pretty much guarantee they are NOT true Star Wars fans as they seem to be ignoring the largest problems. Frankly I feel offended that thousands of players who are upset about this game and the thousands of others who have cancelled are being referred to as "a vocal minority". This is probably what brought about these horrific changes in the first place.
We really, (honestly), have a *very* good reason to be upset about this game. Not just from a gamer's perspective but as customers too. There is a reason why the game's servers are virtually empty now.
Any self-respecting fan of the story and universe would be instantly saddened by this game. There are massive holes in the storyline and it now bears little resemblance to the original classic movies. It has become more of a marketing tool for the Lucas empire recently, and the developers are more concerned about making a simple game over a good one.
Background:
-----------
It is set between Empire Strikes Back, and Return of the Jedi. A period of time where Jedi were virtually non-existant since Order 66 was declared by the Emperor. In fact the only Jedi/Sith are Luke Skywalker, Darth Vader, Emperor Palpatine, and Yoda. At least that's supposed to be the case...
This new version of the game gives you the option to be a Jedi from the very beginning, and playing it, you will see Jedi characters literally *everywhere*. This, as any true fan will know, is simply unacceptable from a licenced game. This makes SWG less realistic and more Jedi orientated.
Before the patch, Jedi were unique, and to see one was a special occasion. People would stop and ask the Jedi player to show off his stuff, and a lot of people would duel him even though they knew they'd lose in seconds. Bounty hunters could only attack Jedi if they were in groups, as Jedi were truly powerful characters with large bounties on their heads set by the Empire.
Alas, no more.
The recent changes have done more things to upset players who remember the original version too...
Crafters:
---------
The actual game mechanics have been redesigned so that armor and weapons do not decay when you die. Pre-update this meant you had to buy new armor and weapons every month or so, which kept the economy running, and kept Armorsmiths and Weaponsmiths busy and earning. It was virtually impossible to find *exactly* the same spec armor, or *exactly* the same spec weapon which meant your tactics were never permanent, and you'd have to evolve as you went. This stopped the game becoming a tedious hack-n-slash style beat-em-up as you really did care about dying. Now that decay has been taken out, there is no point in being a crafter at all.
//-- Edit
In fact, recently people have been committing suicide in order to clone closer to their destination as a form of travel. Death in the game has become so pointless that people, wanting to get from one side of the map to the other, have been asking other players to enter a duel with them and kill them purposefully. When you die you're given a list of cloning centers, and people are simply picking the closest cloning center to where they want to go. It makes a mockery of the whole thing!
Edit -- //
Creature Handlers
-----------------
Another skill to go under the hammer was Creature Handler. These guys could train almost any creature (Rancors, Dewbacks, etc.) to be a pet which fights alongside it's owner. But not any more. The entire profession has been removed. This has upset many hundreds of players.
Bounty Hunters
--------------
Bounty Hunters used to be able to get bounty missions on player Jedi too. These missions have been taken out because a number of younger players didn't like getting hunted. Bounty Hunters now have to hunt non-player characters, which is nowhere near as difficult or entertaining.
And finally... The worst part
-----------------------------
The Trials of Obi Wan is the latest expansion pack and puts the lava planet Mustafar on the game map. It's strongest selling point was that there were so many new creatures to tame by Creature Handlers. Two weeks after it's release, Creature Handlers were taken out of the game. No-one was warned of this impending change. Sony Online Entertainment realised it was facing lawsuits for reeling people in on false pretenses and has recently started offering refunds as a get-out clause. Not the kind of company you'd like to start a long-term relationship with.
Sony Online Entertainment have proven to be a company which like to make plans in secret and not consult it's player base. To be fair though, it's possibly as much Lucasarts' fault and Sony's.
If you are a TRUE fan of Star Wars, I'm afraid you've just missed the best game ever made. It could get better in the future, but try waiting 6 months before you buy it.
You'll be disappointed with this version I assure you.

if you value your money, do buy battlefront 2 instead. you will have a lot more in-depth'ness, multiplayer value, and a reasonable system, instead of the "who a new game comes, lets copy their system now" game the swg has turned into. (first it was combat upgrade, to copy wow & eq2, now it is nge, to copy ddo& city of heroes/villains)
Was good, now sucks

The previous reviewers hit the nail right on the head. What started as a great game with unlimited potential has been "fixed" by SOE into a grotesque ten-year-olds comic book of a game. It is really sad and quite disgusting for any fan of Star Wars. This game does not deserve Star Wars. It is a mockery.
Not even a true Star Wars game.

Don't even waste your time. If you want a Star Wars FPS play Battlefront 2, if you want a good RPG play WoW or Guild Wars. Avoid this garbage at all costs.
Bugs and poor customer support

The game is riddle with bugs, most have existed since beta. With the major changes brought forth not once but 2x in the last 6 months much of the player base has left. The social aspect of the game is gone with the NGE makeing crafting and non combat professions worthless. The time period is set at just after A new Hope yet jedi roam everywhere.
If you ever submit a customer support ticket be prepared to submit it at least 2x. The first time you will recieve a canned answer based on a quick search of what you typed in. The answer may have nothing to do with your actual problem. The second answer may come from someone with less knowledge of the game than the players themselves.
If you go to the forums you will recieve conflicting reports from the Dev team who's credo seems to be treat the players like mushrooms.
This game may provide a few months fun if that, but it is not worth the monthly fee.

Trying this game a year from when it was totally destroyed by poor decision making leaves me with a deep emptyness. The three minutes you'll play this game before you give up on how horrible it is will be three minutes you'll never get back. Don't trust the 5 star reviews, they work for SOE. I've logged into the game and other than glaringly obvious flaws all over the place, the worlds which were once populated with people having a great time, are now completely empty.
What good is an MMO without people? (and without decent programming)
Should be a warning "SOE reserves the right to change gameplay completely at anytime without any notice, or research, beware and don't get attached."

A series of horrible and short sighted missteps and business decisions led us to the point we are at now where Star Wars Galaxies sits as a burned out husk of its former glory.
From day 1 this game suffered from a plauge of bugs of Biblical proportions from which it never recovered. As bad as this was, the game was still groundbreaking and incredibly fun. But this is where the trouble begins. These bugs led to patches that themselves were rushed, which in turn led to new bugs. What do they do instead of fixing the bugs? They rush out yet another patch, not addressing the bugs, which breaks even more things in game. It is a vicious downward spiral from which the game never recovered.
Contrast this to a company like Blizzard, who created and runs World of Warcraft, and you can see how bad SOE's failure is.
In this game customer service DOES NOT EXIST! With SOE, the right hand never knew what the left hand was doing. The Customer "Service" Representatives (CSR's) would tell you one thing in game, and a CSR in chat would tell you the opposite, and go to the forums to get yet a 3rd wrong answer. Have a problem in game and file a bug report or ticket? Wait 6 days for your answer which is a canned response that does absolutely nothing to help you.
This game was awesome in its hayday. Now it is total garbage.
To the people reading this: I am a gamer, just like you. And my advice would be do not waste a penny of yours or anyone elses hard earned money on this game. And certainly don't waste a second of your life.
To those looking for a future in the video game industry: There is a valuable lesson to learn from this game and that is what NOT to do when you're the one making the decisions.
Shame on you SOE.
