I bought this game because others gave it good reviews. I installed it on a HP 510 with XP but can get no further in the game than the menu page. The computer crashes.

Win2k Users Beware!

Before I get flammed, I should say that I played this game on Win98 first and was blown away. Very cool graphics, gameplay is nice too. But my main problem with the game is that it does not support Win2k or WinXP. How stupid is that? Especially in light of the fact that it was released in September right before WinXP was released. Apparently, the company (THQ) is not concerned about the market of new computer buyers. Which most new computers will be pre-loaded with. I feel that I must warn any gamer thinking they can buy this game and make it run on Win2k or WinXP. If you go to the THQ forum and look at the number of post about this, you will see that it is a major problem. You will see numerous posts of how people have had to tweak there machine settings all different ways just to get the game to run for an hour or so before it crashes. No one should have to modify their machine settings to such an extent to get any game to run! I strongly warn any gamer with Win2k or Xp to not buy this game! Win98 and Win95 users have fun, Win2k and WinXP users play with something else like Unreal Tournament, which is now 2 years old but runs on Win2K. If anyone cares, I am running a 667 Pentium III, 256 MEG of RAM with a VisionTek GeForce 3 video card and SoundBlaster Live X-Gamer sound card.

Good game, but not all that its cracked up to be.

Let me start out by saying that I have a P3 1 Ghz system running a geforce 2 mx400 32 meg, with 512 meg of ram and an 2mbit plus cable connection....

The games principals are awesome. I really like the idea of being able to blow through walls with rockets and other machines. What the game does lack, other than what was mentioned before, is gameplay. This game is like every other 1st person shooter out there. There is nothing great about this game. Save your money. They only reason that I bought this game is because it was only $... and thats the only reason.

As far as multiplayer. Like I said before, I am running an awesome cable connection. I tried playing on a coulpe of servers with 12 or less people on it and a ping level under 200ms. All I can say about this is that it SUCKED. The lag was terrible. The game was so jumpy even with 12 people playing and the game is supposed to support up to 32. I dont know. Maybe its cause this game just came out and they need to release some patches.

Here's the deal. Buy this game only if you are a die-hard 1st person shooter game player. Well, even if you are, dont get it, Wait for Retrun to Castle wolfenstein to come out.

You need more then an engine to make a good game.

I bought this game because of the Geo-Mod technology, when I started playing I thought it was a really cool feature, but that's really the only interesting thing about this game. It's as though the designers spent so long working on the Geo-Mod that they left level design up to the last moment, and boy does it show. levels are built like tubes. You go in one end and exit the other. This totally kills the point of geo-mod, what's the point of blowing holes in the walls if theirs only one way through the level? Furthermore the rooms contained on the level are almost all the same, even if your not going to bother with plot (and they haven't) its nice to have some tactics involved. Weather it's sneaking up on enemies or going from cover to cover, I need something more then a flashy engine to keep me interested. This game will likely be the first of many, and hopefully those that follow will make better use of geo-mod.

Tierd graphics, boring plot and recycled story line. This aims high and sinks low. The game just blows.

I ran this game on a PC that exceeded all recomendations and I still had to run the game on the lowest resolution to avoid lag. I even downloaded new drivers for my video card just for this game and it didn't help. The game does fine until you fight an opponent with an automatic weapon and then the frames per second (FPS) drops down to below one.

The idea of being able to blow holes in walls and things is a great idea and is the best part of the game, but the execution of that idea leaves you wanting. The engine seems buggy and unstable.

The single player missions force you to give up all your weapons to go undercover, and it leaves you frustrated rather than excited. I haven't played the multiplayer due to a slow internet connection, but with all the lag in single player I can't imagine that it would be worth my time.

In the end, I wanted to like this game, but just couldn't seem to do it. It had some good ideas, but ultimately failed to deliver. Better luck next time THQ.

Red Faction

Red Faction is a futuristic first person shooter set in mars. You play parker a miner in mars who fight against his employers. The game loads data and runs great, The graphics and sound are ok but the geo-mod technology is not as good as they said. The single player is very disappointing. It is a fairly long game but the gameplay is dull because of the poor level design, dumb ai and nothing new. It is not very hard but the designers don't know where the player would run out of ammo or health. Red Faction is very disappointing.

So Much Potential

Well, first let me tell you that I have been waiting for Red Faction ever since I heard about it six months ago. The ability to punch holes through anything? A submarine and plane [flying machine... whatever]? And a good story? Well, needless to say I was engaged, as nearly every FPS fan was. But the Red Faction they promised is very different from what they released. Sure, Geo-Mod technology lives up to the hype, except you can use it almost nowhere. And the engine is complete trash. I almost died from laughter watching guys run around [their legs look like a cheap cartoon that is missing a couple of animations] and speaking [the mouth animation is worse than Half-Life]. And the vehicles are nice, but you hardly get any [the submarines are very cool though]. If this game had been released with the Q3TA engine [Quake III: Team Arena] with the Geo-Mod tech tied in, it would have been a winner. Now it is just a game to play for a couple hours, not really a Half-Life killer or a legend. If this game had had a bit more polish, it would have been the best.

Short

I am a veteran FPS gamer and I found this game to be very, very short. It is not particularly challenging to defeat. The replayability factor was low, as the enemies were in exactly the same positions as the previous time. In a technical sense, it was well constructed, without any bugs. The GEO mod engine was very good, but under utilised as a gaming option. I managed to start and finish this game in a single session, of about 5 hours, and when compared to some games that released even within the last 2 years, that is poor.

In summary, technically well constructed, short game play, middling story line. 3 stars.

Red Faction- Falling short of my expectations

Red Faction starts out as a great action escape game. THe problem is the plot goes down the drain. You start out revolting against to evil Ultor trying to escape from Mars, but than become you are controlled by the Red Faction leader to do a few tasks that lead you to destroying Ultor.
The game itself is not that challenging, and took me about 5 hours to finish it. Throughout the game you will have fun exploring thigns newly introduced to FPS gaming. For example the GEOmod technology is something that I found to be fun. Other things that might you might enjoy are the vehichles. Although the game has alot of new enjoyable things, it is simply a short game.
The multiplayer part of Red Faction gets old quick. When i first played in a multiplayer game I thougth it was great, but the same great thing wont stay great forever.
If you are thinking about getting this game I suggest getting the demo first and seeing if you like it. The price ... is alot for such a short game, but other people may like it.
