I bought this game right after it came out. Reviewers generally panned it, but I found it quite enjoyable. It's graphics will seem dated by today's standards, but if you can find a copy for around $10 or less, it's worthwhile.

RED FACTION is a 2001 FPS game that packed so much innovation and so many great ideas that is still considered a gaming milestone.

This is the FIRST game to feature effective interactive environments. Not only can your firing or explosives do actual damage, often it was essential to do so (in order to gain passage through a wall or destroy a bridge).

The graphics will seem a bit dated today of course, yet, on the bright side, will truly shine even on less powerful systems. And, if truth be told, a number of the latest shooters relay too much on their graphics and not enough on their overall gaming experience.
The level design is exemplary; the guns are numerous and really balanced and the gameplay is really intuitive and enjoyable.

Give it a try. I am sure you will like it too!
Note that there has also been a sequel, RED FACTION 2, which unfortunately, did NOT share this game's virtues. For the original RED FACTION though:

I got this game, like I'm sure many others have, for the Geomod system. The idea of blasting through a wall seems like so much fun, and it is. Multiplayer is easy to join and has more than enough people to play with. Cheater (using mods) are a rare sight on the game, though they do come by from time to time.

I found single player to be a big disapointment. Just your basic "go here and shoot that", not bad, but with the Geomod it could have been so much better.

If you don't plan to play multiplayer, this game proboly isn't worthi t. But for multiplayer, best game I have ever palyed.

For any of you who have seen Total Recall (with Arnold Schwarzeneggar), this game sort of plays off of the same situation that the movie delt with (all the way down to the dirt drill, which you can use in the game).

When the story starts, your a miner that has been on mars for some time, and you've experienced some pretty grim stuff, well beyond the expectations of your employer, and much worse than minimum wage.

First it starts with a sixteen hour shift, than people start to lose their sanity, and many become sick with grief, and if not grief, then perhaps what they call 'the plague' which strikes almost immidiately, without warning, killing those it infects, instantaneously, or so they say, many believe the plague has a meaning, and that it's conceivance has nothing to do with Mars.

If that's not enough, during your shift you get no breaks, only one 30 minute lunch, and almost no time to sleep in between, let alone the guards who whip your back with words while you work.

So, what is there to do about it, well, currently, there's a warrant out for the arrest of an individual named Eos, no one knows who he or she is, yet knows, that if anyone were to join together to form a rebellion, they should join with Eos. That is where your character comes in and, without choice, joins the 'Red Faction'

This is just the beginning, this is how it starts with your charactor, and how it ends, is only appropriate, much like Total Recall, you ending up saving Mars from the plague, an evil corporation, and a disastrous end.

This game is good for a simple play through once or twice, and is good to keep in the collection to maybe reminesce on or perhaps play again. Well worth the entertainment.

Simply put, Red Faction is a good shooter. It's fun, the graphics are decent, and it's funny. It's different in that it's a game that doesn't take itself too seriously. I often chuckle at the things that happen in the game and the way my enemies will cry for mercy before I blow them up or shoot them. For the price you've got a very good value here. If you're a shooter fan, then get a copy of Red Faction.

I played this game a couple of years ago. It is one of the better FPS out there. This one is better than the second one (Red Faction 2)
The game play is better and it has more levels.
For 10 bucks it is totally worth it.

Red Faction is 1 of the best fps of 2001. It has an exciting story that gets you hooked. It has tons of fun wepons for all your fragging needs. THis game has a exciting new game engine called GEO-MOD tech which basicly means that u can blow up the environment. Some fun things you could do with this is make a foxhole, blow holes in walls to get to secret areas, or even blow up a bridge to stop movimg tanks or forces in their tracks! This game is very good at lighting and visual effects too. This game has many fun and exciting secrets and mysteries to find. Just for a little tidbit the funniest thing i saw was lighting bots in multiplayer on fire with flamethrowers! They run around screaming like little girls until u see their burning corpse drop to the floor!!! I would recemend this game to anyone who enjoys action/adventure, first person shooters, or just blowing stuff to oblivion!!! :)

This game is simply the best. It is not perfect but almost. Anyone who likes shooters WILL LOVE this game. Geo-Mode in this game is what tips the scales. This is like Half-Life with the ability to make your own trails in the game. No more doors you can't getr through because you don't have the right key, blast through it. Also you get control the vehicles you see in the game.
The story is very similar to that of Half-Life (It is a great story). The wide selection of weapons and "toys" adds up to extreme fun in this game. Most of the time you don't have to worry about problem solving. It is a pure kill everyone game will the option to kill innecent(?) workers. Any puzzles you have to solve are usually obvious.
Story twists add to the excitment and addrenaline to the game. The game is not the longest in the world and it is not the shortest. Basically it is as long as it takes to finnish the story, about one and half days.
Simply put this is a (revolution)ary game. You don't have to be a diehard shooter fan to love. Just get it!

This game is great. If you like games like Half-Life you will like RED FACTION. It's a long game and has a pretty decent story line to suck you in.Computer requirements aren't too bad either. I ran the game with a low end video card. you get lots of saves if you like to save a lot.AI characters are okay. The very end of the game will have you cursing or loving the last 10 seconds of gameplay. This is a must have game.
