Great first person shooter

5 Rating: 5, Useful: 2 / 4

I played this game a couple of years ago. It is one of the better FPS out there. This one is better than the second one (Red Faction 2)
The game play is better and it has more levels.
For 10 bucks it is totally worth it.

I'm not into most games, where you have to figure a bunch of stuff out. Yet; this is different and fun. The graphics and story are great, and there are many hidden treasures! I think you'll luv this game!

Assuming the game meets the hype

If the game truly is blow up anything we are talking serious fun... since there are countless games where your walking around with a BFG and can't get past a wooden door(highly annoying) but i think there will still be many things you can't blow up along with bridges and walls that you can...but if its all true its many gamers highest wishes come true finally.....

Best since HALF LIFE

I own this game and it is an excellent 3D first person shooter. The "Geo Mod" is a giant leap foward in this genre or any other. The next forward from "Half Life" or other such shooter+strategy games. All in all a throughly enjoyable ride which somewhat reminded me of "Deus Ex" only better. The Geo Mod is great! If you can't get through a door just blow a hole through the wall next to it and walk right through! There are also secret rooms and such if you know where to look. There are not always cracks like Quake.Be carefull with your weapons though because there are some things you don't want to blow away such as the side of a ship your'e riding in!The strategy aspects are challenging but not to tough to get through if you think things out and "save early, save often".When in doubt, blow it up!A strat guide is recommended for this one just for the maps if nothing else because you can go back and forth between levels to get things. My recommendation: If you like shooters and strategy BUY this game!

You need more then an engine to make a good game.

I bought this game because of the Geo-Mod technology, when I started playing I thought it was a really cool feature, but that's really the only interesting thing about this game. It's as though the designers spent so long working on the Geo-Mod that they left level design up to the last moment, and boy does it show. levels are built like tubes. You go in one end and exit the other. This totally kills the point of geo-mod, what's the point of blowing holes in the walls if theirs only one way through the level? Furthermore the rooms contained on the level are almost all the same, even if your not going to bother with plot (and they haven't) its nice to have some tactics involved. Weather it's sneaking up on enemies or going from cover to cover, I need something more then a flashy engine to keep me interested. This game will likely be the first of many, and hopefully those that follow will make better use of geo-mod.

Not Half-Life, but Cool

While Red Faction does not live up to all the hype, it's a great game, nonetheless. The GeoMod feature is cool, but doesn't apply to the ENTIRE environment--only portions. The graphics are great, the weapons are great, the vehicles are great (although enjoyed for only short periods). The plot is okay, but the voices are a little cheap. I liked the "stealth" portions where you lose all your weapons (except for one) and try to sneak through well-armed buildings. Half-Life is my all time favorite because of the action/sci-fi/horror aspects, which this game really lacks. Even so, Red Faction is pretty cool.

Graphics...so?

This game has a wonderful mix of fps..stealth..and just all out killing sprees. The graphics may not look that great but they were made like that so people with not so big and buff computers...That the problem Half-life made..sure its a great story but after a while running around and killing aliens to free yourself gets boring...

Tied with being best FPS ever!

I personally feel that Red Faction is neck and neck with Half Life as far as the greatest FPSes go. It is the awesomest experience to be able to play a game like Half-Life, Goldeneye for N64 and a role-player. You have control like you do in Half Life, the ability to pick off parts of an enemy (head shots, neck, leg, etc.) and like a role player if you don't like the wall blow through it and go to a new room!

Great story line too.

a Great graphical FPS which rivals all of it's predecessors

Red Faction... well... the plot is sort of simple, but nice, doesn't beat Half-Life in that area though, the graphics are awesome and that blowing holes in the wall is cool, even though you don't have to do that all that much, as the plot doesn't require it.
The Sound is enjoyable, both the music and the effects.
These features are all quite good, and the multiplayer feature is very good.. fast loads and such, but... i would have liked to be able to interact more with people, not this linear plot where you get no chance whatsoever to interact, you're just strolling through the game at maximum speed, killing, picking up ammo, restoring health.. killing etc. But as i said it has most of the elements to make a great game, which is what Red Faction is ...

I would have given it a 4 and a half star but....

small problems

I have been a junky for this multi-player game, daily for an hour, despite my wife's complaints. The single player is kind of stupid and is a pain because it is not always intuitive where a buttom is that get you through wherever you're going. The multi-player is awesome, a lot of people are using cheat code and it can be hard to get into a game or stay it as the server sometimes drops you. But most of the time you can play until your eyes give way. Being able to change the map my blowing holes in walls or floor is a nice feature. There is one issue that is really a pain. If you dig whole by throwing grenades into a pit (sometimes used for defense to restict access to your base in CTF)and fall into that hole sometimes you can't get out and unless you have a grenade to commit suicide or you ask your opponents to kill you, you're stuck. I was thinking a cool weapon would be a suicide weapon with dynamite stuck to your chest as a solution.
