I buy a about one game a year to track the state of game technology. I bought Unreal Tournament last month. I had to return it because the CD would not load, Amazon was super fast and helpful. The game is just amazing!! I'm using it on a Dell 733 PIII with GE Force 32meg graphics card and cable modem. The single player mode is great for learning the game. You can take defaults or program the computer bots yourself. The real fun starts when you hit the net. Tons of game servers available ... all free. Just be prepared to get your a$$ kicked something wicked till you master the game. Actually, there are many different games including several team versions. Online, you can observe as a spectator to learn other players strategies and learn the maps. The quality of the maps is just awesome, very rich details and textures, totally 3D gaming. The speed of play is blazing, takes a while to get used to. Lots of extras available on servers to customize your player and customize maps. You can design your own maps. It never ends. Way beyond the Laura Croft, Quake etc games of the past generation.

I'm a 40something IT Exec and this thing keeps me up at night to blow away the kids. Have fun, happy hunting.

Want a Team-Based Gaming Experience? Look no further.

Make no mistake - this is it. The best overall FPS experience to be had, bar none.

What's so good about it?

1) Doesn't require much by way of system requirements. If you still have a Voodoo3 with a PII 400 or an K6-2 450, you can play this game, and do it well.

2) More online mods than you shake a modestly sized stick at. Go to Fileplanet, download to your hearts content, and you'll be busy for a very long time.

3) Many modes of game play. Capture the Flag, Assault, Team Deathmatch, Tournament Deathmatch, Last Man Standing, and Domination. I'm partial to CTF myself - Unreal excels in this area. For CTF, no other game comes close to matching Unreal's evenness and tempered play.

4) You can OWN with almost any weapon. Sniper rifles can take off heads even while you're on the run. Rockets, while powerful, are not the end-all weapon like they all in other games. Flak cannons blast flak aroun corners. There's a weapon for almost every situation, and a weapon to thwart THAT weapon as well.

5) A multitude of online servers for every game type. I'm never bored.

6) Completely unexpected modes of gameplay yields the best results. IE - there's a weapon called the "Redeemer". Comparable to a small nuclear device. Kills everything in a 200foot radius. Hard to dodge when one's thrown at you. Imagine playing Capture the Flag with nothing but Redeemers and low gravity? It's a trip, an absolute blast, more fun than a barrel of monkeys. Praise the lord and pass the redeemer.

However, players with dial-up need not apply. Your ping will simply be TOO high.

Definitely my favorite shooter

When I was younger, I played Wolfenstein and Doom, beat them, thought they were ok. Got a little older, played demos of the Quake games, thought they weren't worth buying. Then I saw a copy of UT, the Game of the Year edition, for a lil bit in a store. I figured since it was a fairly popular game and was being sold inexpesively, I might as well buy it.
I was completely blown away (by the redeemer ;) ). While Deathmatch is pretty boring to me (the main reason I didn't like other shooters), game types like Capture the Flag, Assault, Domination, etc. that add some strategy to the game really made this game worth the money I spent on it and the many, many hours I spent playing it. The AI was actually challenging (most of the time), which I'm not used to seeing in very many games. Plus, playing against human players online is a hell of a lot of fun. Whether you're a fan of FPS games or not, this game is definitely worth it.

THE BEST GAME EVER

I thought that Unreal Tournament couldn't be better. Epic has proved me wrong with UT GOTYE. The game not only includes everything from UT, but has new maps and new modes. ChaosUT offers new weapons like the chaos sniper (Rocket powered bullets), the crossbow, a miniature black hole, and proximity mines that chase you around! Tactical Ops is a more slow-paced terrorist versus anti-terrorist mission with new weapons like grenades. Rocket Arena is a best-of-three battle of pure skill: You have all the armor, you have all the weapons, you have all the ammo, you have all the health, you have no excuses. I personally guarantee you will love this game. Single player mode is good, but online mode rocks! Buy it now!

UT: Still The Champion of First Person Shooters

It's been 4 or 5 years since the release of the orginal Unreal Tournament and no one has yet to top this amazing game. I play a lot of these kinds of games and consider myself to be qualified to speak on most of them. I've been playing UT about 3 years and I have yet to be bored by this fast moving, skill based, arena shooting game. There is a thriving network of internet players despite a subsequent release of Unreal Tournament 2003. UT 2003 makes a rather bad attempt to resemble Quake Arena, it's closest competitor, but the hardcore players have stuck with the original. Why??? The online subculture of UT is almost fanatical. Long time UT players and programmers have created new maps and weapons modifications that have outshined anything that Infrogames (the UT developer) can offer in a newer edtion of UT. The rise of the Zark Assault Rifle, which is a cleverly modified sniper rifle have made online play so dazzling that few veteran players will even try UT 2003. The map scenarios are infinite and mods are wickedly deadly. There is vibrant network of clan based online players who regularly do team competition in deathmatch, capture the flag, assault and domination. The online players are far more skilled than any of the higher game levels, so there is always a challenging match. The online environment is friendly and welcomes newbies to competition. Because of UT, I am pretty much finished with paying 50 bucks for a game that doesn't have an online compenent. I recently bought Hitman 2, a single player shooter and became so bored with slow moving action, that I was back on the internet playing UT within an hour. So for me, the best fun I can have with my pants on or off, is a good old frag match of UT...still the champion of first person shooters.

Doom doesn't hold a candle to this game!

I'm not a gamer in the sense that the most I ever really played was Wolfinstien, and Doom on occasion. I downloaded the demo of this and not 2 days later, I bought the full version AND upgraded my video card JUST FOR THIS GAME! I was totally sucked in by this game. The graphics and game play are intense. And when you get tired of playing against AI (artificial intelegince) you can play against others gamers online. Don't worry about your online connection. I find game play to be very satisfying on a 56k Dial Up. An Absolute recomend.

Very Very Good Game....

I own Quake 3 and Unreal Tournament.. I like both.. But Unreal is about 10 times better. The single player in UT is actually fun to play. The Multiplayer is FANTASTIC...advised you have a fast connection. The graphics are great and it even runs on older machines. Tons of weapons.... Great game modes.... The bots are very smart and fun to play with. This game is WAY more team oriented than Q3 and actaully involves STRATEGY. Fantastic game..one of my very favorite games....GO BUY IT!!

This is the one!

Assuming you are a fan of first-person shooters, this is the one game you must own. I've played most of the popular titles (Quake, Half-Life, Rainbow 6, etc.) and this one single handedly beats them all. I don't have as much time to play games as I used to (job, kids, etc.) so I've been searching for that one game that gives me that "quick fix". This game is easy to learn, easy to start up and have games end quickly (assuming you're short on time) and most of all, it's incredibly fun. There are three things I want to emphasize about this game. 1. It runs very well on older systems. I have a Celeron 366, 128 megs of ram and an 8 mb voodoo card. With the detail level set on medium, it runs like a dream and still looks great. 2. With all the maps, modifiers and rule variations the replay value is outstanding. 3. Contrary to what is hip and popular, I've never been a big fan of online gaming. I've done it plenty of times, but I just enjoy solitary gaming better. The AI of the bots in this game is very impressive. While not as completely unpredictable as humans can be, the bots act very human. Now I can deathmatch without dealing with the immature attitudes I always encounter online (sorry to over-generalize). At $30 (or less) this game is a steal.

I'm giving it 5 stars because I can't give it 10

Forget the reviews... If your even considering this game, don't!! You'll spend all your time playing it, honing your skills against bots and other humans. You'll dream about Unreal, you'll talk about Unreal. Your friends and family won't be able to pull you away from the computer!!!!! Approximately 20 of us bought this where I work and it's become an epidemic, we no longer work...we show up each day just to play Unreal. Get the picture...It's awesome!!

GET IT!

I was bored on my PC for quite some time until I purchased Black and White, I must say I was extremely dissapointed with the title so I looked in another department: Action. UT is an excellent game with many elements other titles such as Quake dont have. UT's Gameplay utilizes more elements than just hardcore action, strategy can be used as well for gamers who have that edge. Many things can be adjusted for the players stlye (such as the gravity for strategic purposes) and jumping around in slo-mo mode on 10% gravity is probably half the fun of the game. Excellent graphics also make it a beauty, but there are pretty high system specs, unfortunately. Besides that, Its a solid first-person arena style shooter and strongly reccomend it to anyone who enjoyed Halflife or other titles with similar gameplay, such as Serious Sam or the original Unreal.
