Short and incredibly sweet.

Played almost every type of shooter possible, but born and bred on computer shooters vs console shooters. To me, console shooters always felt a bit...sluggish, goldeneye, halo etc, quality, but just not for me.

I was plugging away at this game when a friend of mine brought up that I didn't seem to mind the "slowness" of the game, and to be honest, I didn't even think about it. The whole "take cover, pop out and fire" aspect of the game gives it an arcade/virtua cop stylish feel to it...I can only imagine the potential of a wii-mote aim and shoot version of this game, but I digress.

Pros
-Extremely immersive, the cut scenes and play flow very smoothly, the game is like playing through a story.
-Stunning graphics, without comparison....really, nothing touches it.
-Likeable characters, they're meatheads, but you get attached...
-Awesome playability, like I said, first game as a full time pc shooter that I liked.
-Innovative - the "cover" feature really defines this game...and it really makes it stand out from the rest.
-Good voice acting - some of the best, they sound like they look.

Cons
- I almost wanted to give this game that is so awesome 3.5 stars if I could for this one reason...I know I'm a minority here but the single player was way too short for my liking, I actually couldn't believe it was over because I was done in less than a day, and I didn't play all that much. Honestly I played it through on the next difficulty and beat that in a few more (it gets insanely hard), but still, it's the same game when you run through it again, pretty much the only reason I played it through again is because there was nothing else to do. (fyi took about 8 hours to beat the whole thing on regular difficulty)

-Split screen sucks, it's disorienting (just like any console shooter with split) and only splits it horizontally. None of the multiplayer functions are worth playing on 1 tv....

So bottom line is if you don't have xbox live, or if you don't like multiplayer, (although tbh it looks sweet if I decide to fork out $200 for the hardware/software etc)I would just rent this game, beat it in a day or two, and get the next game...Unless you happen to enjoy doing the same thing over and over at harder difficulty...or wasting time collecting "cog tags" that don't really do anything. So maybe 5 stars if you have xbox live and 3.5 if you don't.

Lets talk about the physics of the game

I only want to comment on the part of this game that makes it feel great to me regardless of all of the other good or bad things about it... The physics. While playing Gears of War, the speed, weight, and motion of all of the characters has a very real feel to them. There is no floating around like in many shooters. While running, mounting/mantling a wall, or in melee, everything has impact. Every time I pick it up, this is what really pulls me into the experience. Yeah, the graphics are good, the multiplayer is intense, and single player is short (but fun), but none of it would work the way it does without the physics. Intense!

Not quite as good as expected, but still...

I had really high expectations for this game, thinking that this was going to be a completely revolutionary gaming experience. It was not. However, the game is a very good game. It just isn't all that revolutionary.

Graphics are pretty good. The overall art direction is great. It really gives you a good impression of the nastiness of it all.

The game play is OK too. I like a few of the new details they included, such as the reload mechanic. I also like that I have to search cover rather than just run and hit the fire button. Plus, there is a bit of variety provided by special weapons such as the "hammer of dawn". And enemies such as the blind Berserkers are also interesting and provide some variety.

There are a few frustrating moments, like when the character dives into a full of enemies rather than taking cover (both actions are triggered by the A button which is context aware... although not always quite the way you want it). And of course you are dealing with the console-typical checkpoint save system. But in all fairness, the checkpoints are plentiful and pretty well positioned.

So I would say that this is a very good game overall. I enjoyed it and would recommend it. It is probably one of the better games I ever played, especially on a console. It just isn't quite as revolutionary as I had come to expect...

Good and definitely worth playing, but multiplayer lacks purpose

If you are reading this, then you already know about the game. I just have to say that this game is pretty good, but has been a disappointment because it does not live up to the hype. Primarily due to the multi player. More about that later.

Single player is rather fun, but definitely is a lot better when you play co-op with a friend. I do have to give Kudos for allowing co-op over Xbox live. Please, bungie, put this into Halo 3. It can get a little predictable and repetitive at times, but it is interesting and fun even though the story line is somewhat non-existent. I rather liked the level where you had to stay in the light to keep from dying and sometimes you had to create your own. I thought that was rather innovative. Other than that, the story line is mostly non-existent.

Graphics are definitely pretty good, but I was really expecting more (too much hype). I also feel like they cheat by making everything very, very drab. I know that this is part of the feel of the game that they are trying to paint, but when black, grey, silver, and white make up 80% of the color palette, I think it is a lot easier for them to make things look realistic. It is much more challenging to use a full color palette across the board. I think Call of Duty 3 is underrated in this regard and has more impressive visuals due to their usage of color and active environments. Besides that, you will spend a fair amount of time just learning to figure out whether your enemies are enemies or friends because the colors are very similar. You need to learn to look for subtle clues.

Two game play aspects that I found innovative is the roadie run which gives you limited visibility and directional control (provides some realism) and the active reload system that rewards and punishes you for how well you do it. I think the active reload system should become standard fare in shooters.

Using the A button to do everything can occasionally become annoying as you'll sometimes find it not doing what you really want to do and will make things not seem quite as fluid.

On to multi player, where my big gripe is. It pretty much has no point other than straight up killing. If you are the type of person who only plays death match on other games, then this game is for you and you can ignore my gripe. If you get more enjoyment out of true objective style games (capture the flag, assault on Halo, war on Call of Duty) then this game will become boring. I've played it about 10 different times for a total of about 20 hours now and I find that it doesn't hold my attention. I've only played it this much because I kept hoping to have an epiphany as to why it is the most played game on Xbox Live. Half the games you get in become everybody rushing to the middle and just seeing who has better shotgun / chainsaw skills and half of them end up being sniper contests. The assault rifle is usually worthless because if you are close enough to them they can out shotgun you and if you are out of shotgun range they can just dive out of cover and regain health. If you play with friends who are good or randomly get a group of people who can organize, then it is probably more fun. However, don't expect much when you just get matched up with most people. Everybody will just run around with little strategy.

Bottom line, the game is good, but the level of hype surrounding this game created expectations for me, particularly with multiplayer, that could not be matched. In other words, the game is somewhat of a disappointment for me and may be for you if you believe all the hype and if you are the kind of person who prefers to have multiplayer games with a goal to them (like capturing headquarters, etc) besides just killing each other.

Best Game Yet.....

Gears of War is the first game for the 360 platform that has taken full advantage of the Xbox 360's graphical and processing capabilities. Not only does that game have amazing graphics and sound effects, the gameplay itself is easily adaptable and fluent. Gears of War has raised the standard of tactical shooters. If you're used to going Gung-Ho, guns blazing like Halo 2, you're going to die rather quickly. Gears of War accurately utilizes the realistic concept of duck and cover - forcing you to shoot from behind walls and around corners. Unlike Halo 2, Gears of War has a single player mode that is actually worth your attention. The multiplayer function is consuming and addictive. The game has numerous online achievements that will take even the best gamer some time to unlock.

This is a game that should be in every avid gamer's collection - if they're over 17, of course. As awesome as it is to cut someone in half with a gun that has a chainsaw bayonette (yes, you heard me correctly), this game is far too violent, crude, and graphic for children.

great game!!!!!!

this is by far the best 360 game, no wait next generation game for any conosle! (360, ps3 and wii) the ai is the smartest i've seen, the controls are simple, the graphis are a 9.5 out of ten! the gamplay is insane ranging from mines, bombed buildings, churches, streets, trains and alot other levels. this redifines 3'rd person shooter. sure theirs action, but it is intense, you'll have to find new ways to defeat your enemies everytime. if you wait to long they will rush and get you. some parts you be being chased by a beserker, or you'll be being hunted by krill, little bat like things that are blind in the light but if you step into the dark, you'll be gone in seconds. the cover system is awesome and is so simple yet it's one of the best things about the game. the co-op is great fun online or off, and the online it's self is awesome when playing with friends, it is so satisfaingin chainsawing you best friend... get this game if you have a 360! it is way better than any other game on any other system!!!!

This game is a great game for the new-gen console. Gears Of War uses Xbox 360's full potential of graphics and gameplay. Humans are fighting against an alien race called the "Locust". Your in a team with 3 other people that help you throughout the game.

The graphics in this game are about amazing in all the areas. Detailed character models, really detailed enviroments that bring the game to life. If your a fan of graphics this game will not dissapoint you at all.

The sound in this game is also great, fits the theme of the game. The sound is also accompanied by members you fight with to your enemies yelling stuff back and forth throughout battles.

The controls in this game are quite easy. Learning the controls shouldnt take the average gamer long at all. Some people get frusturated about the leaning and crouch up and against objects saying it isnt responsive. But it is, the controls are perfectly controlled and set during the game in my opinion. You can crouch behind/against an object while sending blind fire and peeking up every other second to fire at the enemy(A good feature the game possesses).

The fun factor of this game is very high, the single player campaign is fun and keeps you interested in the story the whole time. Even though its fun, I think the storyline should have been a little more fleshed out than it actually is. The game was in the making for a long time and the story just didnt seem ALL there. But the story is good enough. Multi-Player is also a good aspect of the game. Good game types, and no flaws really that I can see in it. The choice of weapons is great also, a good variety. Boom shot, a automatic rifle with a chainsaw, shotgun, pistol, torque bow (good weapon if you get good at it).

Overall, this game is REALLY good, hardly any flaws and great solid gameplay. Its definately one of the best shooters out on Xbox 360 right now. I highly recommend it to the FPS fan.

Best Xbox 360 Game in my collection

Awesome graphics. Best use of Xbox 360 architecture so far, perhaps because of Microsoft's relationship with developer. A couple of acts had convoluted logic for beating which caused hours of unnecessary and frustrating time. Go online for tips when stuck, as you may have a higher IQ than the developer.

this is the best game I think I've ever played and trust me, I've played a lot! the graphics are amazing- you really do feel like you are there, fighting for every inch. The AI is great- each time I play it feels like it is a different battle (not the same old stuff each time).

As far as shooters, it is a little difficult to get the hang of the controls, and the combination third/first person is annoying at first however after a few battles you definitely get the hang of it and can really start to enjoy the game. It has realistic co-op playing, and even when playing single player you still get the interaction with the other characters. The sound is intense- scares the crap out of my cat!!

overall, five stars and a must have for everyones' collection!

So much fun, i have made several quality friiends...

Gears of war, in my humble opinion is the BEST social network on the web... The game is great, the addition of a chain saw to a machine gun is just simply genious. Above and beyond the coolness of the game, the social networking of this type of game will eventually help us break down the barriers of prejudice and help bring the world closer together. There are many naysayers to this theory as the folks who use curse words and have bad gameplay manners ruin it for some. But you need to embrace the technology! Some of the brilliant tools you get is the ability to MUTE any player... Don't lower yourselves to the level of the PUNK player and just mute them! You can also rate players, AVOID Players, and my favorite PREFER players... Besides my best friend (who is my only real friend) I have met a group of cool indivuals who interact together to win the game.

One thing I like to think about is the positive effect this will have on kids. Letting children play with their friends through this medium is perhaps the best. As with all new social technology, what if you could have kept a list of all your friends thoughout your life so conviently stored in a place for interaction. This kind of technology is creating a new new way to communicate, keep up with, and interact with life long friends...

FYI download the new multiplayer maps. One is small for instant action, and the other (OLD BONES) is huge and was provided by the Discovery Channel. Wow, I think I can see where this is going... Cudos Microsoft! Xbox andthere addition of Zune to the Xbox menu system will be the savior of Bills old Company... Lets hope they see it too...
