This is why the 360 is dominating the sales charts. GoW is one of the greatest games of all-time. The graphics, mutilplayer, single player, etc are all top notch. Play this on an HDTV and you've never seen anything like it.
What makes this game even more fun is the multiplayer co-op mode. Playing the single player game over Xbox Live with my brother using co-op is a memorable experience.
one of the best shooters ever

I have been playing games for 26 years. I love action/shooter games. Very rarely do I ever play a game more than once. I have played this game 4 times alone all the way through and once w/ a friend split-screen. Beautiful graphics and sound. You feel like you are playing a movie.Dont play a lot online so cant really comment on that part but the single player is definetlyy worth the purchase.
Good Game

I was skeptical before I bought the game as all screenshots are dark and I hate nothing more when you have to turn up the brightness in a game to see something but this game is a lot of fun to play. I especially like the co-op mode which you can do via XBox Live, something Halo2 cannot do, fun playing the Missions with one of your Buddies.
The Graphics are close to flawless and I only had one hikkup so far (small issue).
If you don't like gore, I would not recommend this game and the voices are quite poor compared to the rest of the game (lots' of "nice" and "sweet").
The Best

I wasn't a shooter fan before Gears Of War (GOW). I mostly play hack and slash or RPG games. GOW will likely be my gateway game to shooters.
I'm playing on a 1080P 50" DLP, and the graphics just blow me away. There is insane detail on the COGs faces, body armor, guns, locusts, etc. The facial expressions, head nodding, etc match the voice acting well. When you "roadie run" the screen tilts from left to right, as if a camera man was following you running. It's pretty lifelike! The landscapes are beautiful. GOW continues to deliver with many detailed zones throughout the game.
The cutscenes are exciting and the storyline is great! Even from an RPG fan (games that have very in depth stories). Playing GOW made me research the back story which I found very interesting.
The sound was done well. Hearing the deep voices of Locusts saying "Die Ground walker", boomers saying "Boom" before the blast you, Wretches performing their bone chilling screech, Theron Guards hissing in their creepy voices, etc...it's just great! There are plenty of instances in GOW where it's creepy to play alone in the dark with the volume cranked. Resident evil creepy. There are a couple areas where you can hear things crawling all around you, but you can't see them. You just have to wait for something to jump out and scare the **** out of you. It's great :)
The controls are perfect with the 360 controller. Once you learn how to shoot, active reload, hide, roadie run at the right times, and somersault your way out of imminent death...you will have a blast with GOW gameplay!
The co-op gameplay is unbelievable. It's one of the most enjoyable multiplayer games I've ever played. The replay value is great! You can start from any area you completed in the game. I really don't know what else to say. This game deserves 5 stars from me. GOW completely changed my view on shooters, and opened my mind to a whole different world of gaming.
Nothing short of Amazing!

After a lifetime of PC gaming, Gears of War made me buy an Xbox 360. Short of a sequel, Gears is easily one of the 10 best games of all time. Fast, bloody and rich in graphic detail, Gears does not disappoint.
If you own a 360, are not afraid of a lot of blood and gore (I would keep it away from anyone under 16), you must buy and beat Gears of War!
Haven't been an action fan until now...

I haven't liked action games since 16-bit days... you know, cybernator, contra 3, Gunstar Heroes...
This game is the next gen child of those... the first action game in almost 10 years that I've sat down and enjoyed from start to finish. It's as epic as it is a work of art. It's like playing a movie. The final boss is a little weak, though.
A Great Shooter that stands tall because of 3rd person POV

Gears often gets lumped with shooters like the Halo series, Resistance, and other first person shooters, and it really shouldn't. If you try the "run straight ahead and try and shoot more than the other guy" approach, you will fail.
The third person POV enables a different strategy than any other shooter. Because you can actually see the main character, you can hide and crouch much more effectively. You can actually plan how to attack, and grenades become much more useful.
Another feature that changes the game is the fact that you cannot jump. The fact that you are grounded means that you must always look for cover to protect yourself.
Unlike most shooters, the single player mode on this game was very enjoyable. Usually, single player shooters get very tedious, and most of the time I don't even finish them (Halo and Halo 2, for example). Gears didn't get tedious at all. The game is short, but I think that's a good thing. It gives you a good story and enough time to hone your skills before going online.
Graphics are top notch, and this game is probably the best looking game on the Xbox 360. If you have a HD television, the game looks amazing.
The controls are solid as well. The game is very instinctual, and it doesn't take long to learn.
Overall, this is a great game that should be a staple of every Xbox 360 owner's library.
Gears was the most anticipated game of the Holiday 2006 season for good reason.
An Immersive War Experience

Having come from the first-person Halo crowd, I was skeptical that Gears of War (GOW) would live up to the hype. But it's actually revolutionized shooters by perfecting what other games were already doing, adding some gritty elements that make it more realistic...ironic, considering the game takes place in an apocalyptic future.
Marcus Fenix is the ultimate tough guy, broken out of prison by one of his squad mates for a suicide mission. Fenix leads a team of testosterone-laden warriors in a quest to find the Widget and plant it in a place that will destroy the enemy, the Locust Horde, a race of ugly, pasty mutant-types.
There are no faux cut scenes in GOW; everything you see is in-game graphics. And how sweet those graphics are! Be it the blood gushing, the sparks of bullets firing, the collapsing of crumbling architecture--all of it is captured in grisly detail. Fenix and his comrades are extremely lifelike (my guess is motion capture) and they curse and swear with all the vigor of an HBO series. Finally, we have a game for adults.
Not, mind you, that the game is any more mature. Fenix is still a one-note cipher of macho attitude, and his companions are hilarious rip-offs from Aliens and Predator. But so what? Like Halo, that's exactly the point...we came to kick some butt and chew bubblegum, and we're all out of bubblegum. So blowing up bad guys will have to do.
Humanity nuked its own territories to prevent the Locusts (sometimes called Grubs) from spreading and it shows. GOW's world is a big, monotonous mess of broken debris and lost dreams. So how did the Locusts survive? By digging underground in massive tunnels. The Corpsers, gigantic Locusts the size of whales, tear up terrain and make smaller holes for the humanoid Locusts, who spill out of the gaping hole like pus out of a wound.
The campaign is innovative, from moving mine carts to a fight, to a gun battle in a crumbling house to a shootout on a train. And who doesn't love a fight on a train?
Graphics aside, GOW is a fully realized universe. You can stop bad guys from spawning by throwing a grenade into a "Grub Hole." And to complicate matters, grenades are connected to chains that you bounce off of things (and even people), so one does not merely throw a grenade at a target. Gone are the Hail Mary sticky bomb kills that made Halo frustrating. The other weapons are equally innovative, especially the chainsaw bayonet, which allows you to churn up your enemies, Evil Dead style. Locust duck and weave, use cover, slowly advance forward and then retreat when they're in trouble. And oh yeah...NO JUMPING. Halo characters hopped around like frogs, such that a Spartan armed with a rocket launcher could become a moving target on an otherwise featureless terrain. No such luck here...if you're standing out in the middle of nowhere, you'll go down and go down hard.
Combat is brutal. This is the first game I'm aware of that made an art of reloading weapons; by hitting a certain button at the right time, the player gets rewarded with more damaging ammunition. Reload at the wrong time and the gun jams. What a concept! Another innovation is the idea of ducking behind cover. You can also duck and weave, diving from hidden locations as you zig-zag across the battlefield. You can even blind fire your weapon around doorways. In the campaign, your fellow characters are more than just cannonfodder. The game is considerably easier if they're alive.
The camera is as much responsible for the realistic feel of combat as the warfare itself. When someone gets hacked up or dies at point-blank range, blood soaks the camera. When Fenix runs, the camera stoops lower and bounces along behind him, just as if there were a cameraman following his every move. It even addresses my own pet peeve: you can't run forever this way, Fenix gets tired after awhile. There are frequent hints throughout the game, flashing to important weaknesses that turn GOW into more than just a shooting gallery. Yes, there is the obligatory vehicle driving and valve turning, but GOW makes it all feel natural.
The multiplayer is excellent. Two teams of up to four (Locust vs. Humans) battle it out. When comrades fall down, you're even responsible for helping them back up. The dead can watch over the shoulders of their comrades or watch from fixed cameras. Tactics actually matter. I play every Wednesday night (look for Talien, natch) with friends and it's a blast.
GOW is more than just a game...it's an immersive war experience. No self-respecting fan of shooters should miss it.
