First I will agree that if you own a 360 you should at the very least play Gears Of War! With that said the game is far from perfect! Yes graphically the environments are gorgeous, but that's about it! All of the characters are less than awe inspiring and the Delta Squad characters appear especially cartoon like.
I' am a stickler for graphics and thus found dead Locust carcasses becoming suspended in mid-air annoying, albeit I only recall this happening twice. Another graphical hiccup for me was having the seemingly colossal Locust carcasses treaded through and subsequently strewed aside as if nothing more than rag dolls by Squad members while advancing through the environments.
As for the story, it's really lacking and frankly not very original. Overall Gears of War does offer worthwhile gamplay, being best enjoyed in co-op or multiplayer via Xbox Live. The aforementioned is a must if your going to permanently add GOW to your library!
Nice!

I am a student majoring in video game design and have taken so many classes about games and the game industry that its not even funny. Seeing as how i know way more about games then any one person should i will get down to business. This game is a very high quality game that has great graphics and a wonderful design to it. The levels truly convey the idea of a once beautiful world now destroyed by years of war. Yet the characters convey the gritty feel of true elite soldiers fighting in a last chance for survival style of warfare. The cover system is fun and easily mastered but it can be a little annoying in some areas where you have to constantly run around switching cover because your teamates seem to like wandering into your field of fire. But all that aside, the game is great. Uping the difficulty level gives it a new twist where you really have to fight for your life. Your squadmates actually fight right alongside you and tend to be pretty good when it comes to supporting your character. I personally loved the game and have found great replay value in it. Not to mention the fact that theres a gun with a chainsaw blade on it to cut enemys in half...the first time you pull that off is just...awesome. This game is not for kids though. With the copious amounts of blood and gore and the spattering of foul language its not a game for your little kid. But for any other gamer, you have to play it at least once. Its a game that deserves a spot on every gamers shelf and i beleive that you can enjoy this game no matter who you are.

If violent shooters are your game then Gears o' War is your game. I love the various methods you have to kill your enemies. The enemy AI is not stupid but allows the baddies to duck and cover and flank you. Very nifty game.
frustratingly good most of the time

firstly, this game is definately the best game so far in it's genre. do not hesitate to buy it. single player 'easy' mode is fine and over quite quickly, but the remaining difficulty levels prove far more challenging. this sets you up nicely for the online play, which is where i think this game really excels. you have to bring your A-game to the table online to really get into it though. however this is also where the frustration (and annoyance sets in). if only the following could be banned online: 1. immature trash talking kids 2. clicky groups constantly congratulating themselves or crying when they lose 3. unsociable retards. your gaming experience online is ruined by these 3. when you can find people other than these it is truly an exciting, fun and otherworldly experience. lastly, when developing the sequal please make the character move more quickly, crouch anywhere and not stick to everything...thx
Gears delivers on the promise of next gen gameplay...

The cover system (that has been attempted in other games but never very well) works great, the combat is fast paced and intense and the engine a joy to behold.

Gears of War is a great game. The single player was fun on the insane level and the multiplayer is the best out there. It is kind of weird at the beginning but once you get used to it you will enjoy it. If you have a 360 you have to get this game!
Mature first person shooter that's a blast!

I've played this cooperatively, single player campaign, and online multiplayer. I enjoyed all of them.
The game is for a mature audience, however. Don't let your young one convince you that they need to have this. The language is harsh. You CAN make some adjustments with parental controls to tone the language down and eliminate most of the gore in the game...but, you can't eliminate all of it. So, if you feel that PG-13 content is okay for your kids, go for it...and that's with the controls in place. Be warned, the setting is not defaulted to tone down the gore or the language. So, you'll have to be a active parent and set that up yourself.
Enough of my soapbox ... this game rocks! Game player is smooth and fluid. The story, is entertaining. I found the game to be over a little fast for the price of the packaging...but, I have 2 other difficulty settings to play through for my money, too!
What makes this game really shine is the cooperative game play. You can have a second player jump in and jump out at any time while you're playing the campaign. I have never played a game that had that feature so far...looking forward to seeing this style of cooperative play become a standard.

If you have a 360 and are over the age of 13, you've GOT to get this one. I bought it on the recommendation of a friend of mine, and not once regretted it. The gameplay is about as good as it will likely get for a console-based third-person shooter. The detail of the game is terriffic: very gritty and hard. The lack of a health bar is a refreshing departure from the constant scavenging of health packs most other shooters have you doing. It lends itself well with cooperative play, and I've played it through with several friends.
A warning to parents: this is quite the profane game with several swear words, including the dreaded effenheimer. It lends itself to the game quite nicely assuming you don't have a 4 year old hanging around learning new words. Decidedly an adult game, but a must-have.
Kids loved it

I ordered this for Christmas along with quite a few other games and this one seems to be getting the most play. The kids love it.

I have not played a game that has made me stay up this late at night with a friend or has made my adrenaline pump as much. Whether its playing through Co-op with a best bud or stomping guys into mush, this game has it all. Simple gameplay, jaw dropping visuals, and strong A.I. this game has made me come back to it over and over again. Gears of War sets the bar so high for what a video game should do.....which is to entertain and grab the player by the throat.
Beware however of the graphic detail, for it is possibly the goriest game to play online and off. Not that it has the most blood, but the physics in relation to torn apart body parts and piles of flesh is just so lifelike. Set that aside and you will notice how much this game feels and plays like a 6 hr movie. Sometimes when I play it for over half an hour online against people my heart races because I get so caught up in it.
I highly suggest for those wondering about the Xbox 360, to at least try this game out. You make think twice about your $600 PS3 purchase.
