Excelent

Excelent game. I am 35 years old and do not have a huge experience with action games. But this game did get me hooked in. It's relatively easy in the easiest mode and you can pretty much cruise along the phases until the end. There are a couple really odd creatures that take some time to figure out how to kill them (I looked it up in the web for lack of patience). The story line that stops the shooting and plays a little movie is a pain , but it's not too frequent). The monsters, guns and oponents are pretty unrealistic (future-like), but very creative. Whenever you die, you get back to the last check point that is normally not to far away. However there are a couple that you move back a while and have to repeat the same steps before getting onto whatever you were trying to kill before. This was a bit of a pain. Overall a GREAT GAME !! I strongly recommend it. If you like more reality-like games, try to download the free America's Army for PC. It's amazing.

I like it!!

I finally broke down and got an XBOX 360 a few days ago; nearly a year after it first came on the market. My first two games I picked up where COD3 and this game.

Because I was familar with COD from the PC, it was the first game I tried. I really liked COD3, but I then decided to try GOW and honestly, I didn't really like it the first time I played it. The 3rd person view made the game cumbersome and certainly not what I was used to in a shooter. I spent the remaining of the day and half of the next day playing COD3. I finally decided to give GOW another chance and the 2nd time around, I started to get into it, I got used to the controls and the3rd person view fairly quickly after I figured out that you had to pull left trigger to actually aim your gun to get more accurate shots off. After that I was hooked and I haven't had COD3 in my 360 ever since.

GOW is a highly addictive game, the graphics are superb and the sound effects are amazing. Guns actually sound like guns, and not pea shooters which is one problem I had was Halo 2. The attention to detail is almost scary. Pick up a sniper rifle and shoot an enemy in the head and you will see their head litteraly being blown off; other times their skulls gets pushed in from the impact of the bullet. The good guys also are done very well, while they seem to be maybe a little unproportionally big, it makes the game that much cooler. Seeing them walk down the road in their body armor makes you want to just kick some a-- and it really gets you into the game.
Like others, I don't know much about the story line, but to me it seems that the humans are at war with an alien race of some sort. I try to follow along during the cut scenes but I am still kind of lost of what i really going on. The atmosphere in this game is generally dark and suspensful. And while this game is not scary, it is very creepy, if you have seen the movie Pitch Black there is one level that will remind you of that movie.

The gameplay once getting the hang of it is pretty seemless. It may take a couple of tries for people who are used to FPS shooters, but once one understands the controls, they will find that they are actually quite simple, yet very effective, every button is where it's supposed to be and after a while it just becomes second nature. One thing I like about the game is its attention to running and shooting from cover. It makes the game realistic and fun. I like being able to hide behind a burned up car or a road barrier while occasionally looking up to get some shots off at the enemy. Not only is it cool, its nescesary or you will find yourself dying quite frequently.

The sound in the game is another great thing about the game. From the background music to the sound effects of bullets blazing and enemies dying it is truly a joy to listen to through my home theatre. The voice acting in this game is also done very well. It is believable and comical at the same time, its almost if you are watching a good action movie at times. I honestly haven't seen voice acting this good in a long time.

Now for the short list of cons. First I would have liked to be able to use the voice communicator to actually speak orders to my squad like you can in Rainbow Six 3 on the regular XBOX. Its not really a big deal, but the person in Best Buy told me you could, but it seems that you can't. Another issue is that it seems that your squad is at most you and three others; when you have more than 3 others in your group, one always seems to get killed off in a cut screen right before you are given control of your character again. I would have liked to see more people in the squad, to make the game even more fun. I guess it was done like this because the 360 only has 4 controller ports. My final complaint is that because of the dark enviroment, it is sometimes hard to figure out where you need to go next, a lot of time can be spent going in circles until you happen to see an opening you didn't see the first 4 or 5 times you walked by it.

I don't play games online mainly due to the stupid kids that are up there, so this review like all of my reviews are based on single player mode only. Overall its a fun and highly addictive game with few flaws. I am glad I picked it up; I am actually feeling kind of bad for COD3 because I haven't played it since I started getting into GOW.

UPDATE: Well after playing this game for less than a week, I have beaten it already. Add that to the short list of cons for this game..entirely too short. I was very into the game after an exciting level, then just like the gears accomplished what they needed to do and the game is over. Kind of dissapointing, because it was such a fun game, and came out wanting more. I dare say I want a sequel, but my fear is that a sequel will suffer the fate of many sequels to awesome title; they are never as good as the original, but there is always a chance.

There are a lot of full reviews out there, so I'll just chime in: yes, it's every bit as good as you've heard. You'd have to see it (and play it!) to believe it.

Well it surprised me.

I saw this game previewed, i did'nt fancy it much, i read all the hype which in turn put me off the game even more, but one rent later and i went out and bought this game right away...it is truely amazing.

First I'll start with the graphics, i've seen a lot of different graphics for the xbox 360, some good and some not so good, but this one surely takes the trophy and lifts the benchmark for the rest of the games to follow. The cut scenes are amazing, the color and shading have almost reached perfection in this game..it really is that good.

The sound is also spot on, the voice sync is acurrate, nice to see that for a change and the voices well acted on that gives the game a more realistic tone.

The gameplay is fast and furious, I am not a lover of the shooter genre but this game has got me hooked, hordes of locusts ( the term for the baddies) descend or should i say ascend from the ground upon you and your teammates and the duck and cover technique is a must to outflank and outwit a very clever AI.

The AI as i say before is clever and well armed as are you with a good variation of bombs and guns, one that also can be used as a chainsaw for those more gorey fans out there.

Everything about this game is superb, I've played Halo 1 & 2 and I know there are a lot of Halo fans out there waiting patiently on Halo 3, this will keep there thumbs busy until it's arrival, the best game on the 360 thus far, this game gets a two blistered thumbs up from me.

AMAZING!

This game completely redefines the FPS genre. People say it is the next Halo, I say that you cant even compare the two. They are two completely different games with two completely different styles. Ok the first thing about this game that is amazing is the graphics. I have never seen a more beautiful game. The next thing is the fighting style, you have to take cover alot, and they make it really fun and interesting to do. There is a small learning curve, but it is really easy and I think the new control scheme actually makes the game more realistic. Of course shooting is still the same with the use of the trigger, but to aim you get to use the left trigger. And you can aim while you are taking cover. It differs from halo in that it is more strategic. Instead of jumping in and shooting like a maniac, it actually requires you to take cover and be more cautious about things. However it is not completely stealth such as in the splinter cell series. This new formula of combining these two elements makes it very entertaining and realistic. This is the most realistic game I ever played. My adrenaline was pumping when the first boss came! There are few games that I have played that make me jump put of my seat as if I am really there. If you own a 360 you should already have this game. If you dont, this game is worth buying a 360 for alone! One complaint.... no jumping button. However in reality if you were wearing 300 pounds of gear I dont think you would be able to jump. That is my only complaint and with the absence of the jump button it actually makes the multiplayer so much more fun. So not much of a loss there. I will admit it was frustrating at first, especially since I use jump alot in Halo, but I am really glad with the omission.

The only person who doesn't like this game...

Apparently I am the only person who doesn't care for this game but I'll tell you why. Let me first say I'm not a Xbox or Microsoft basher...I love my 360...I just didn't care for this game much at all. One is the graphics. Yes, they are very smooth, but my preference is for realism and in this game everything is somewhat cartoonish. All the soldiers look like action figures. Also the scenery is all very gray and gets tedious after awhile. It's also hard to tell if you're hitting something that you're shooting from far away. In my opinion, HALO's graphics are still much better. Second, I did not care for the game play. The cover button gets annoying and you WILL accidentally take cover when you're trying to do something else. Third, the story line is not very engaging...it doesn't pull you in and make you want to discover what's going on. The voice acting is also poor.

Now don't hate on me...this is just my opinion. But everyone said it was so great so I was a bit let down and sold it after a few plays.

This game rocks! The only problem is sometimes, the blood on the camera gets in the way and you can't see. But I can deal with that!

A year later, it's the best 360 title out there.

I purchased GoW (Gears of War) when it came out in November of last year. Today it's December of 2007 and I'm writing a review for those of you who are looking for titles for this holiday season. Having played Halo 3, Bioshock, and Call of Duty 4, I have to say that GoW is the game to buy this year if you don't own it already.

In terms of lasting appeal, none of the other titles mentioned even comes close to Gears of War. The gameplay is so deep, and the combat so unique that I am still improving over a year later. The game is so good that it inspires me to want to excel at it. I can't say the same for any FPS on the market.

The campaign isn't the longest, but it is comparable to other shooters. The difficulty scales fantastically well, and on insane you are definitely in for a major challenge. The achievements are well thought out and intriguing, and the overall polish put on every aspect of the game is obvious.

If you only have the budget for one game this year, buy Gears of War. There is a reason that it's still full price a year later while second rate titles like Prey cost twenty bucks at Gamestop. Gears of War absolutely drips quality.
