The Bayonett is Dead, long Live the Mini-Chainsaw!!!!

5 Rating: 5, Useful: 2 / 3
Date: December 22, 2007
Author: Amazon User

Once upon a time, the next generation of consoles was released and the world waited eagerly for some titles it had been promised. Of those, some were not what had been promised, some were stray bullets that hit and sometimes missed, and some were landmines that people couldn't help but feel the effect of. Enter the long-dead utopia called Sera and the heavily-armed disease called the Locust Horde, and enter the otherworldly Delta Force and the once-imprisoned Marcus Fenix as a counterpart to said menace.
The bayonet is dead. Long live its replacement, the mini-chainsaw.

When I first saw that skeletal cog I was intrigued and pushed forward. This threw me headlong into a story about interpersonal worlds and about the struggle a world was engulfed by, introducing both The Locust Horde and the Cogs in Delta Force. At first it seemed like the game would be complex, too, but the way the game takes time to ease a player into the game really helped with the learning curve. Utilizing both control sticks and allowing for full use of cover and weaponry, it seemed like everything would keep gaining momentum throughout the story. It did, too, and I was glad for it. The more I pressed myself the more I saw how things looked, noticed how well the controls handled, and how beautifully the variety of weapons would work. You have four weapon slots with some interchangeability, and the quick press of a button can make you spray an area wildly, take cover, or use the chainsaw at the end of one of your weapons. This led to a game that easily surpassed most of the tactical 3rd person pieces of flair that are hailed with armadas of praise, notably powered by the Unreal engine and showing something that I both recognized and didn't at the same time.

There are quite a few modes of play here, a good gaming experience waiting to be had (I'm discussing single player because multiplayer is always whatever people want from it), and a story arch worth playing. The AI you work with isn't totally terrible, either, with them laying down suppressive fire when they need to and sometimes taking bullets that were meant for their commander. That isn't to say that they are without their flaws; too often they stick their heads in the way when the timing couldn't be worse or they end up wounded and need you o come and help them out. You, yourself, are your own keeper in a lot of ways; you have a symbol that pops up on the screen and, as it turns terribly red, you turn terribly corpse-like. While you help your buddies out and give them rudimentary commands they don't always do what needs to be done, and some of the enemy movements are smart enough to flank and nail you.
Combine that with burned out building husks and you have a pretty piece of time-killer.

This is one of those games that works because it seems to keep giving. The enemies don't do annoying things like respawning, the checkpoints come often enough that you don't have to repeat things too often, and the difficulty is reasonable (unless you lay on insane - then you asked for it). I keep thinking the 3rd person genre is dead only to be stunned by something I want to play like this and that is a good sign.
Constructive weapon design, intuitive enough design on motion, meeting bizarre creatures and introducing them to shells that blow them into tiny bits; even if you don't father a child like that, it is hard not to love it. Recommended.

Awesome Game

This game is a must own for any person who has an xbox 360. I dont recommend this game for kids under 13. It is fun but it is also very gory at the same time. The story line is pretty good but maybe they could have made it 1 or 2 more acts longer than it is. The online play is very good but i was shocked to see no Capture the flag type games or Free for all types either. All and all i spend most of my time playing online with this game. I liked how you have a chainsaw on the end of your gun and chop locust in half. The graphics are the best ive seen in a game so far on the 360. It may sound unbeleiveable and some people will still fight this but Gears of War is better than HALO 2!! Well in my eyes and many other peoples eyes it is. So here is how i rank it in certain areas:

Gameplay:5/5
Controls:4/5
Xbox Live:5/5
Graphics:100/5

Does not live up to the hype

I appreciate the long-winded, though overly verbose, descriptions some of you have sent in. Comparisons to Halo, however, are well off the mark. This game lacks the single-most important characterisic of that shooter - ease of control. The hero moves very slow. You have no idea how much energy he has without a life meter, so getting shot by the enemy while trying to evade fire is especially frustrating. I noticed he does move very fast when activating "special" covering moves. This makes the controls even more absurd. So here we are, laboring to walk, but if I push "a," as one critic on this site said, "he moves like a chipmunk on crack..."
The reality is... none of these games are realistic. So saying Halo is not as realistic as Gears is like saying the aliens in that game are less believable then those here. "Locus Hordes," ok, enough said about that. But, that's not why we pay $60 for these games is it? I just want the guy to act when I push the button. That's all. I'm not even going to delve into the merits of this game - graphics, storyline, complexity. All of that doesn't matter if I have to play the same checkpoint over five times because he refuses to move, duck, and jump. It gets a little frustrating.
Reality is, I'm still playing Halo 2 on a console that it wasn't designed for. Guess I will be until someone can make another shooter "fun" to play.

Who said this was as good as Halo?

Pros: Graphics, Graphics, Graphics. Great weapons. Good sound effects.

Cons: Poor story and mediocre music. Definitely not Halo's replacement.

After reading the hype for 2 months I decided to shell out $60 for this game. While good, this game doesn't come close to unseating Halo in single or multiplayer. The graphics are the best you'll find on any system and run glitch free. The weapons and character models are lifelike. The story is sorely lacking. The music is average at best and doesn't sync well to the game. The "duck and cover" system is about the only tactical about the game. I beat it on "casual" the first night and beating "hardcore" took 3 nights. Didn't even bother with "insane" because I had completely lost interest in replaying the game after beating it twice. I honestly bought this hoping it would be a good change from Halo and GRAW's multiplayer but I am sadly dissapointed. Halo 1 and 2 still has the most replayability of any game I've ever played on any platform. After 3 weeks with this game I'm taking advantage of EB Games' $40 trade-in credit and going to grab Rainbow Six Vegas. Counting the days until Halo 360.

The Greatest Game ever created

Don't listen to all the other losers who say this game sucks. They are only sayin that either because they own another game console, and just like to make everything they don't have obsolete, or because they have extremely poor sense in games. This is the best game i have ever played. PERIOD.
I was a little skeptical at first, because i didn't want to believe that their was a new king of games other than Halo. But 5 minutes into the game,I was a believer.
This game brings a whole new outlook to first-person shooters. It isn't run and gun, it's stop and pop. Using cover is an amazing new way to maneuver through the beautiful world. You don't jump over every obstacle, you use it. Their are a wide variety of moves you can do with cover, and the controls are simple. The A button does it all.
The graphics are great and the game play is straight up fun. The selection of weapons makes defeating your foes so much fun. One weapon has a chainsaw bayonet, you can melee, stick enemies with grenades, pull off head shots (their head actually explodes) and so much more.
The single player campaign is fun, and theres always objectives or obstacles that make the game interesting. the world you play in is fantastic. It is destroyed beauty. The characters are interesting and their are a variety of them. Th campaign has acheivements that make you want to get.
But you havent even scratched the surface until you have played GoW on xbox live. there has never been a game so fun on live since halo 2. It is awesome. and it is easy to play with friends. Their are also acheivments you can get in live too.
but with that, this game is very bloody and is not for the little ones.
once in a while you might experience a small glitch, but they are very minor things. You should buy this game.

People come on...I know, we're ALL hungry for a good game. "Splinter Cell 4" crapped the bed on us..."Call of Duty 3" was nothing short of blasphemous in the eyes of its predecessor..."Saint's Row" wowed us for about 6 hours...and NFL football is still exclusive to EA.

I know...it's the Dark Ages for us gamers. But let's not give "Gears of War" TOO much credit.

Face it. It's a really pretty "Killswitch". Nothing more. Nothing less.

You can squeeze about 6-7 good hours out of it...if that...until you finally realize that you're doing the same old crap over and over and over...and that it just isn't fun anymore.

I've yet to play online with it---I'm sure that's a different story. But as far as the campaign goes...3 of 5 stars. That's it.

Good, that's it

Pros:
+ Excellent graphics
+ Gameplay is average
+ The storyline is good
+ Good sound

Cons
+ No jump button. You have to press the A button to run, hide and do evasive tactics. Sometimes it's hard to disengage
+ No crosshair, unless you press the yellow button to show it
+ Repetitive
+ Weapons are Ok
+ You have to click a button to pick up bullets. Same for weapons, but if you need bullets it should be automatic
+ The atmosphere is too dark (gray).

Overall I am dissapointed. Halo gameplay is funnier. It's not the killer app they talk about. I played the multiplayer and it's ok. Once you die you have to wait until everybody dies. I only played a once, so I don't know if you have any other multiplayer options.

Very short campaign. Designed for online gaming

This is the first time in many years that I have finished a campaign-based shooter in less than a day. I completed the Casual-Level campaign in four or five sittings of 1-2 hours each, and I don't consider myslef a hardcore gamer.
If your gaming preferences are for offline games, then I'll ask you to think about it before getting this game.
I also couldn't conceive that I had to try about 10 times in two days to get into my first online ranked game, so even the online part wasn't satisfactory. I guess this should be temporary but I had to comment on this particular issue.

So why even give it 3 stars? Well, I have to admit that getting the hang of the controls was as easy as pie. The addition of cover tactics were a nice touch and they were very well designed. Gameplay was smooth, I couldn't see a frame skip while I was playing, and we are talking about playing among many huge characters on screen at once, it takes a lot of power to handle as efficiently as this game did.

You know, I saw the advertising, I watched many trailers for this game on cable and on the Internet, I read and watched how all the industry experts at E3 considered this game a revolutionary concept in shooters, I got so hyped up that I reserved a darned copy months in advance, I guess like many others. But in my opinion, other than adding the cover tactics and building a very efficient game engine, I don't really see a revolutionary concept here. I takes more than that to make a great overall game, and this one leaves a lot to be desired.

Just Me or Does This Game Suck??

I don't get all the outstanding reviews here. The game is repetitive as hell and also annoying. I got so sick of constantly filling holes and annoying, annoying monster enemies that are always the same. Every room, every level on this game is the same. I did enjoy the Hammer of Dawn thing.. that was a cool concept, but overall I wouldn't buy this one.

Now, before all you fanboys add your comments to my review, ask yourself why a game like Halo 1 or 2 was/were so popular? A: Because they had many different environments, enemies, etc. This game is the same dreary, boring stuff, colors, scenes, environments beginning to end. Plus.. if you knew these damn kryll (or whatever they're called) would kill you when you drive out...why drive a vehicle with no roof? Why not slap armour plates on the thing and let them bang into the roof all they want. What? Am I supposed to believe they can pierce armour? Dumb game.

Gears of War is a must have.

This review will be written in the areas that disappointed/impressed me.

Graphics:
WOW. This is my first Xbox 360 game to play and I can say graphics wise the 360 won't disappoint me. The graphics of this game are unbelievable. I've been playing the game on my 20" flat panel and it looks great. Tonight I tried the game on our 52" HDTV and it was AMAZING!
Rating: 5.0

Fight Sequences:
This game has a concept I've seen in few games and the games I have seen it in didn't do it well enough to note. The concept I'm speaking of is the ability to hide behind walls and debris. You can hide behind a wall and you can even switch to a closeby wall or something similar with the press of one button. You may also aim out and shoot but what really got my attention what this. You have the ability to point your gun outside of the object you're hiding behind and fire. This is extremly useful under heavy fire. Though to add realism the accuracy drops but who complains about realism? Not I.
Rating: 5.0

Weapons:
I loved the weapons in this game. One of your assualt rifles has a chainsaw baonet(sp). The shotgun is extremly powerful. The sniper rifle is amazing easy to use. If you're not good at sniping you shouldn't have a problem with it in this game. (Sniping in Halo 2 is harder than this) I did have one problem with the weapons though. I did not like the grenades. The grenade is some type of alien contraption and it doesn't always go where you want it to. It's also hard to tell where it does go. The good news is where you target the grenade to land is where it will land.
Rating: 4.0

Story:
Graphics, Gameplay and great weapons don't make a truly awsome game though. The story is what really determines the greatness of a game. This game LACKS STORY!

WHAT IS WITH NEW GAMES AND NO STORY!? YOU PAY 60$ FOR A GAME THAT YOU CAN BEAT IN LESS THAN A DAY! WE SAY IT'S FOR GRAPHICS AMAZING GRAPHICS. GAME DEVELOPERS WORK ON YOUR STORIES! TAKE A LOOK AT VALVE AND ID THEY KNOW WHAT STORY MEANS!

This game has no story. In fact most of the game you're so confused you have no idea what's going on. If you don't watch the video when you put the disk in, you know the one you get by letting it sit for a while? If you don't watch that video you'll be so confused and won't understand a lot of what's happening. Logic would state that this very important video that describes the setting of the game you're playing would be placed as a video when you select that neat little button that says NEW CAMPAIGN! I'll just give you a few ideas of the ways you'll be confused while playing this game *may contain spoilers*:

-You have to watch the intro to understand the game
-You hear about a certain trial but never know why that person was on trial
-You hear about a persons father, who seems to have an important role in the story, but guess what THEY TELL YOU NOTHING OF THIS MANS FATHER!
-You don't know how the marines in the game know each other, some make it obvious that they know each other but how YOU'LL NEVER KNOW!
Rating: 1.0

Replayability:
Yes, you can play this game over. There are many achievements you can strive for that will keep you busy for a while. The game is so vague you could play the game over and over again hoping to catch a peice of the story you missed. It's fun to collect the CoG tags and complete the achievements to get your Gamerscore up.
Rating: 5.0

To sum it up:
If you want a fun game with great graphics that can keep you busy for a while, this is a game for you. I only recommend renting this game if you're not a hardcore gamer. Some of the acheivements are really hard and can take you a while to complete so if you're not a hardcore gamer you probly won't even try some of these. One acheivement is to kill 10k people... so yeah.
