A Very Good Game With Few Weaknesses

Many other people have been raving about the graphics and the story, and they are correct that they are very good. If you want a gritty / slog through the city / fight from cover to cover game, this game fits the bill. Once you get used to the 'take cover' ability, you will come to like it (it is necessary to survive so you had better like it or find a different game to play). My chief criticism is the dialogue... "Sweet", "Nice", and the other oft-repeated phrases get to be a bit much after a while. Other minor criticisms are: (1) the faces do not move very well; and (2) the voices are nothing to get excited about. Overall, it is worth the money.
Amazing game, with one tiny flaw

So by now you've already heard about how amazing this game is. The graphics are unreal and the gameplay is stunning. The ways in which your character can interact with cover will likely become a standard feature of the FPS genre from here on out. I love the Call of Duty series, but I have to admit that after playing Gears of War, Call of Duty 3 just wasn't that much fun.
So what's the one tiny flaw? The local multiplayer only allows two people to play at once. Don't get me wrong, online play is fun and all (although those who don't spend a lot of time playing the game will probably find themselves getting killed pretty frequently by those who've logged more hours). But there's really nothing quite like having your friends there in person as you stalk each other on-screen.
Call of Duty 3, while an inferior game, does allow you to split the screen four ways for local multiplayer. So for those who enjoy having two or three friends over for some in-person multiplayer (like back in the old Goldeneye days - remember that game?), Call of Duty 3 might be be a good supplement to (but not a replacement for) Gears of War. But when it comes down to it, Gears of War is easily the best FPS I've ever played. Nothing else even comes close...yet. (Halo 3, anyone?)
visually great, but awkward controls

This is the best looking game that I have seen on the 360. It has highly detailed textures that barely beat out Ghost Recon. However, those textures make it hard to see loose ammo/grenades unless they are in those large crates. The framerates are smooth and the action is relentless. I have only a couple of complaints. First, the controls are different than any other shooter I've played on the 360. The A button is used for almost every action and is context sensitive. For example, A is used to run and when near a wall is used to hide behind it or jump over it etc. In most shooters you push down on the analog sticks to use the rifle scope and crouch, but in this game you pull the left trigger to aim and there is no crouching unless you're near a wall. Also, you have to use the D-pad to change to grenades and the aiming of them is cumbersome and slow. I like the more standard approach of just pulling the left trigger to throw a grenade. Gears uses a new reloading method that reminds me of swinging a golf club in Hot Shots for example. You pull the right shoulder button to begin to reload and a progress bar starts to swing. You then pull the button again when the bar is in the sweet spot to reload very fast. If you miss the sweet spot you reload slower and if you really miss then the gun jams and it takes even longer to reload. Its a nice detail that I hope other games will use. Finally, this game is all avout action. There is no stealth-its a run and gun shooter. I prefer more subtle games like Ghost Recon, FEAR, and Call of Duty 2/3. But everyone who owns a 360 must give this a try for the graphics alone.

We all knew this was going to be the game of 2006 and it is by far the best game I have played! The graphics, gameplay, story, characters are all great and I loved the dialogue between them they made me laugh several times throughout the game. It feels like a blockbuster action movie and it has its scary moments in it as well! Only thing I thought didnt look all that great was the Hammer Of Dawn! I would have liked to see something more devastating come out of the sky and when it hits its target maybe see the bosses explode! Other then that I thought the game was awesome!

This game meets all of the hype and sets a new standard for shooter games going forward. The graphics are visually stunning and the game play is intense. This is a very excellent game.

Gears of war is an awesome game for the xbox 360 platform... this game is a must have for xbox 360... I think it is the best 3rd person shooter I've ever played..
What calls my attention the most about this game is that if you start playing it, you wont stop until you beat it.. this game is a bit hard, but nothing that a good gamer can't take. It is fun, sometimes scary, but with a great storyline that makes the game even better.
I think this is a game every mature gamer should have if he owns an xbox 360, 5 stars for this one
If you like gore, killing lots of things.... look no further!!!!

This is by far one of the best games for the 360!!! not only can you play coop on the same counsel... but over the net as well!!!
I recommend that you have a friend take you through the entire game on casual first so you get the hang of it. Also buy or borrow the game guide!

Great game with cool options. My only copmplaint is that you can only play up to two players. Three or four would be better. Great game.
Amazingly Fun

I rented this game and ended up beating it in a couple of days on the easiest difficulty. I own Quake 4 and Prey and got bored with both of those pretty quickly, but I had as much playing Gears of War as I did Halo the first time through. The people at Microsoft found ways to make the whole game fun and mixed things up enough so you're not just running through shooting stuff with no real change in gameplay. The bottom line is after beating it, I still can't wait to own it so I can beat it on the harder difficulty. Even going through the same missions again is fun due to the great gameplay.
The Best 360 Title To Date!!

The detail in the graphics and gameplay alone is exceptional. Gears of War takes full advantage of what the 360 is capable of doing. The gameplay is both immersive and addictive. This is a challenging game that isn't frustrating to play and you feel the need to keep trying at it even through the difficult points (the stage with the Krye and beserkers)until you progress. The enemy AI responds to your every action. If you take cover, they will try to flank you, if you take a defensive posture, they will try to overwhelm you with grenades and firepower. They actually work in units, one provides covering or supressive fire while the other enemy soldiers get closer to your position. This is the best game I have played in a very long time. If the 360 keeps cranking out games like this, the console war has already got a winner!
